Chapter 2954: Nothing to Lose

On the edge of the Ebony Island, Yutra was straining to stand up, the sound of his ragged breath drowning in the mist.

“Ah, damn it..."

His hands were shaking uncontrollably, so he couldn't quite pick himself up off the ground.

Suddenly, he saw the hem of a crimson dress sway in front of him, the red fabric obscuring his vision. He shuddered for some reason, as if reminded of something frightening, and then a strong hand helped him to stand up.

He found himself face-to-face with an exquisitely beautiful woman, and spent a moment before recognizing her as one of the Blood Sisters who followed Saint Seishan.

The woman helped him regain his balance and said in a somber tone:

"Stay close, soldier."

He nodded, looking around in search of Rit and Tegrot. Luckily, the two of them were nearby, looking as shaken as he was.

There were countless Awakened warriors around him, actually, all crowded around the banner of Lady Seishan.

Yutra's sword had shattered somewhere on the chain, so he inhaled deeply and summoned a spare Memory — one he had used in Antarctica before earning a better one during the Eastern Subjugation Campaign.

'I'm still alive, at least.'

He used the brief lull in the battle to catch his breath and pour some water into his mouth, which was as dry as a desert.

Then, there was a stir up ahead, and a command to advance resounded in the mist.

The soldiers moved forward, Lady Seishan walking in the middle of their defensive formation.

The mist surrounded them from all sides, obscuring the world, and a cold sense of fear permeated their hearts.

“Stay alert! The vessels of the King of Nothing can attack at any moment!"

The command echoed in the mist, growing strange and distorted as it traveled further and further away.

Yutra gripped his sword tighter.

Somehow, he and his two friends found themselves at the front of the formation soon. Each step echoes in the swirling fog, making their hearts beat wildly. Sweat was rolling down their faces, making the hilts of their weapons slick.

"Up ahead!"

Yutra raised his shield, preparing to face whatever it was that revealed itself from the mist — an immense dark shape that made the blood run cold in his veins.

However... the dark shape remained motionless, not showing any sign of lunging at them.

The soldiers approached it cautiously and slowed down for a few moments, full of wary apprehension.

"What the hell..."

The enormous abomination resembled a tall hill of black hair, the shape of a grotesque ape-like body barely recognizable beneath the long fur. It looked tremendously strong —a Nightmare Creature of a Rank that Yutra could never hope to scratch, let alone kill.

And yet, it was motionless, devoid of life, and utterly dead.

Passing the dead monstrosity, they advanced forward. It wasn't long before they encountered another dead abomination, and then another, and another...

Soon, the abominable corpses surrounded them from all sides, looming in the mist like a forest of misshapen gravestones.

Nothing attacked them from the milky white fog.

“What... what did this?"

Tegrot sounded uncharacteristically subdued.

Had they been destroyed by the white mist? But the King of Nothing was its ruler... why would his own vessels be slain by the fog he had summoned?

"Forward!"

The command arrived from the back, forcing them to continue advancing into the mist among the motionless corpses.

Only, why did it seem...

Like something was moving in the mist? Something vague... colossal...

Alien.

Yutra felt a cold chill run down his spine as he sensed something gazing at him from the milky white expanse of swirling fog.

"Hey, Yutra... won't you look at that?"

Tegrot's friendly voice sounded like usual. However, something about it made Yutra feel cold — and that was before he realized that it had come from an entirely wrong direction, even.

Following an impulse, Yutra shut his eyes tightly.

He did not know it, but at the exact same moment, every human soldier on the Ebony Island closed their eyes, as well, acting in perfect synchronicity.

That was because Asterion commanded them to do so.

The Dreamspawn himself, however, kept his eyes open.

He peered into the mist, the relaxed smile slowly draining from his face.

Then, his gaze climbed higher, and higher, and higher still... as if he was looking at something that towered above him, looming vaguely in the mist.

His expression turned somber.

In the next moment...

That was when Cassie felt the Ebony Island quake.

She remained motionless for a second, then faced Mordret once more.

"The advance of the Hunger Domain was slowed down, but while the mortal soldiers might be thwarted by the mist, Asterion is not someone who can be stopped by nothing. You know that, so what is your plan?"

Mordret was breathing raggedly, his face slowly growing even paler than before. He stared into the distance for a while, as if not hearing her question, and then aimed the gaze of his mirror-like eyes at her.

“Stop him? Ah, no... I wasn't trying to stop him. Just slow him down. Didn't I say that I needed to buy myself some time?"

Cassie's frown deepened.

“Time for what? I am your ally, damn it. Shouldn't I know?"

Staring at her, Mordret smiled.

“Your usefulness as an ally has all but exhausted itself, Song of the Fallen. Still... I guess it has not run out yet."

He remained silent for a short while, then exhaled slowly and looked down.

After a few moments, he said in an even tone:

"This is all your fault, you know?"

Mordret looked at Cassie with a hint of dark, cold contempt in his eyes.

“You and your inept owners. I warned them! I warned over and over again, but no... Changing Star — and her shadow, as well — they just had to give in to their avarice. They wanted too much, valued too many things, and were determined to protect too many people. They weren't prepared to sacrifice anything at all, and where did we end up as a result? Here, at this moment, driven into a corner."

His lips twisted into a snarl.

“Asterion cannot be defeated. But I could have defeated that monster, still. I almost did! If only those fools had not prevented me from doing what had to be done. If only they had honestly admitted that sometimes, one has to become monstrous in order to fight monsters."

Mordret shook his head and laughed bitterly.

“Come to think of it, it has always been that way. Looking back... I've led quite an unfortunate life, haven't I? Something has always risen to stand between me and achieving my goals. In the Second Nightmare, in Antarctica, in Godgrave... everywhere, every time. It is almost as if fate itself conspired against me. As if I was fated to lose and end up with nothing.”

He sighed heavily.

As he spoke, Cassie felt pressed down to the floor. The pressure continued to build as Mordret's face grew paler, and at some point, she realized that she was being suffocated by his presence.

Mordret's presence was usually difficult to notice. In fact, he did not have a presence at all — he could be sensed by an eerie absence, instead.

But now, it was building and building, seemingly boundless. The air in the great hall of the Ebony Tower grew frigidly cold, and Cassie felt her hair stand on end. Mordret shook his head, his expression turning calm and steely.

“Well, it doesn't matter anymore. Even if that is the case... I still want to give it my all. Let's see this through to the end, shall we, Cassia?"

She tilted her head, caught by the fact that his presence seemed to be growing more powerful.

Then, a flash of understanding hit her like lightning.

Her expression changed subtly, and she turned to Mordret slowly.

“Your vessels..."

Cassie finally understood what was killing the myriad of his vessels outside the tower. Nothing... nothing was killing them. They weren't being killed.

Rather, Mordret was simply collecting the millions of fragments of his soul he had torn away to inhabit the legion of stolen bodies back.

He was assembling himself from those fragments, piecing his soul together like a puzzle.

But no, souls didn't work like that. Souls were alive, just like bodies were — when wounded, they healed, regrowing lost pieces of themselves, with scar tissue covering old wounds. So there was no place for these fragments Mordret had torn from himself in a cruel act of self-mutilation to go... but he was absorbing them nevertheless, forcing his soul to swell to a dreadful, impossible size.

Making it deeper than even a Supreme soul was ever meant to be.

Mordret smiled crookedly.

"Ah, I see you finally figured it out. It is a desperate gamble, I'll admit — but then again, I am quite desperate at the moment. And I have nothing to lose."

Cassie was taken aback.

She felt too rattled to fully fathom the implications of what he was doing, let alone express them with words.

The battle... the odd choices he had made regarding his Reflections... the timing of it all...

Her voice shook:

"...Apotheosis."

She took a step forward.

“You madman, you are attempting Apotheosis!"

Mordret studied her for a moment.

Then, he shrugged with a faint smile.

"Go big or go home, right? Since I can't beat the Dreamspawn in this game, the only choice is to flip the board. Well... attempt to flip it, at least."

His Reflections surrounded him, having assumed his own form.

Each of them had been created from his soul cores. But each of them had also grown since then. In this battle, as well, they absorbed enough soul fragments to evolve by a Class or two — in fact, Mordret had sent them to those areas of the battlefield where they would be able to reap the most bountiful harvest of soul fragments, not where they would be able to impact the battle the most.

And Mordret himself had not been idle after creating them, either. Even having sacrificed all those soul cores to create his Reflections, he still managed to elevate himself to a Supreme Titan once more.

Seven soul cores burned in the depths of Mordret's Supreme soul — as many as the soul of a living being could support and withstand.

The seven Reflections shared many more among themselves. Some of them were Monsters, some of them were Demons, some had reached an even higher Class. Looking at one of them, Mordret asked in a neutral tone:

“Do you know what separates gods from mortals, Song of the Fallen?"

She remained silent, not knowing what to say.

Not receiving an answer, he chuckled.

“Neither do I. But... I'm quite curious to find out."

With that, Mordret reached forward and shattered one of his Reflections, absorbing it — and the soul cores it bore — back into himself.

In Cassie's mind, the runes describing him shimmered and grew vague.

Would Asterion begin his own apotheosis by consuming humanity now? Since Mordret is doing the same, so the population from the river people might be part of the new humanity since the humanity now is about to be culled probably

Humanity probably won't get weaker after this war, it's probably getting stronger, there will be the river population which probably has a lot of awakened warriors, plus Cassie will probably be supreme, and also Effie, Kai and Jet seems to be all a step away from supremacy, Ananke will probably leave the tomb with them too, so there would be 5 new supremes for humanity, enough to compensate the death tool from the war

And I don't think mordy will become a sacred that easily. Atleast not without any downsides.
Maybe the whole process of apotheosis or adjustment will take a few years.
Or someone interrupts it to make the process incomplete.
Since eurys said apotheosis is a gradual process it feels like cheating.
But this is exactly what asterion was trying to do with humanity.

The reason apotheosis is so slow is because you have to somehow make your mind kinda "see the world" or something along those lines (I dont remember what it was specifically called), if mordret cheats apotheosis by forcing his soul to evolve without the needed "adaptations" to being a complete god he'll probably go insane or sum. but you never know g3 wrote mordret as the offscreen king he lowk might just thug it out.

If he does become Spirit, then the only way it can be done without him easily killing Sunphis and all of humanity is if he changed. What I mean is that Cassie uses this moment as a Supreme to alter his memories in this vulnerable state of Apotheosis he's in. She makes him forget about all the trauma and reform him to be good and not a psychopath. This way he is the first Spirit that is actually on the side of humanity. He can hold back the other Cursed and possibly unholy abominations while Sunny and Nephis challenge 5NM. There is always a risk of how much time they would take in the Nightmare as they were humanity's strongest champions now Mordret could hold the fort down for them

Okay, here's my theory: during the apotheosis, Mordret will merge with Gudret and become the Supreme. Yes, the Supreme.

Why is this possible? Well, Mordret has never been complete. His flaw, his abilities, his story, his role in the plot. But I want to talk about his act of defiance and his supreme ability. Mordret's act of defiance has always seemed... unimpressive. Sunny cheated death, Nefris challenged the sun god, and Mordret... killed the Great Abomination? Is that all? How many Great Abominations has he killed before? Why Skinwalker was so special? (I can actually tell you why, but I don't want to)

And his domain? All Supreme abilities follow the same principle: anchor-buffs. Anchors are the foundation of the domain (the shadows of the slained, longing, name, and Azarax's "mark"), while buffs are the abilities of Supreme that the anchors can use. For example, we can say that Sunny creates shadow incarnations from the shadows of his soldiers, just as he creates his own incarnations from his seven shadows. So, what are Mordret's anchors? Well... none. His "Supreme Ability" is just a Transcendent form blown up to titanic proportions. The whole point of the domain is to be a "battery" for the Supreme. An external source, repository, and conduit of power. An external one. While Mordret's domain is himself.

So, what if these oddities are caused by the "incompleteness" of his aspect? In that case, he could eliminate this incompleteness by merging with Gudret. The essence of his flaw is that Mordret is a reflection, and a reflection cannot "contain" the entire object being reflected. Therefore, it took seven reflections to reflect the original Mordret. But is it possible to create a complete reflection? Yes, it is. All you need is a sphere of inward-facing curved mirrors. Or a sphere of concentrated Nothingness. That's about what we have now.

So let's say Mordret has the theoretical ability to overcome his flaw and become Supreme once again. How would this end? Let's start with his abilities. I believe that Mordret's abilities would undergo some changes, particularly the essence of his domain. For example, he might gain more control over the Nothingness, and his new anchors could be Others or creatures from the Nothingness. Additionally, he might lose the ability to absorb the essence of others like Nephis and transition to a diet of his own kind like Sunny. It's possible that he would acquire an Aspectal Legacy. Mirror boy is currently weaker than both Sunny and Nefris, but with this buffs, he will be able to stand on equal footing with them. This will serve as the foundation for his role as a villain, and I believe that Moredret will become a villain somewhere between the sixth and seventh nightmares.

Mordret's mental state... Can you imagine what would be reflected in a spherical mirror? One huge distorted reflection that overlaps itself. Well, I don't think Mordret would like that. He might become even more insane.

And finally, the Flaw. If Mordret and Gudret merge, Mordret will become the only being without a Flaw. The theory that he'll just fall apart into seven pieces again isn't interesting in this case, so I think Mordret will literally merge with his Flaw. This will make his entire being incomplete again, but in a different way. For example, it could manifest as the madness I mentioned earlier.

And in conclusion, Mordret will merge with Gudret, become a full-fledged Supreme, go completely insane, kill Asterion, create his new domain, go through the fifth and sixth nightmares with Sanphis, and die somewhere in the seventh nightmare. That's all, I've run out of milk.

      That's an interesting theory.

But to me, that's not possible. Because a reflection can't be anything more than a reflection, or it's not a reflection. So if Mordred should have merged with Gudred, he wouldn't be Mordred anymore.

The act of defiance isn't really about changing himself, but about overcoming an ordeal imposed by your mind. (To eat yourself, to kill yourself, to fight yourself, etc.)

The incompleteness of Mordred is what he is and nothing more. His nature is to be incomplete forever, and that's how Mordred is. So, if one day he becomes full, he will cease to be himself. So, if Mordred becomes whole, he will die for sure. Something new will emerge, maybe, but it won't be Mordred anymore.

Even though I don't like Mordred at all, I don't see him as a villain. He is more like a protagonist to me, but with a flaw, and I don't see him dying because he is the protagonist amongst the seven others (Cassie, Kai, Sunny, Nephis, Mordred, Jet and Effie.) None of them will die, and all of them will live through the end of this story, because that's how G3 planned to make his story work.

But to balance the pace of evolution of all these protagonists, some shortcuts will be made (even though that will make the scenario more unstable). That's how Nephis became Supreme, that's how Effie will be, that's how Mordred has been, and any other characters.

If not, then the scenario is flawed.

      That's my humble opinion.

An act of defiance isnt something imposed on you specifically its just breaking a rule of the world or beating a being mcuh stronger than you (The being you have to fight probably has to have will so supreme at minimum). mordret having a second defiance where he breaks the rule of flaws without some kind of loophole like sunny killing himself and willing himself into his own soul would be insane since not even the gods were perfect, they could not get rid of their own flaws.

What is perfection, then? If even a god can't break past their flaw, I don't see how a mere mortal could. That's how nonsensical I think that would be.

here is the point. Mordret is not a man or a god, he is a reflection. Nothing. Nothing can surely be related to the Law of Imperfection. That's why I think Mordret will be able to do something with his Flaw.

Another idea about what will happen when Mordret will get rid of the Flaw. He will become a Flaw. A Flaw for the whole world. In simple words, he will become a walking apocalypse.

Why are you so obsessed with Mordret and Gudret fusion?
A flawless being is such an anomaly that even God's have a flaw. What makes you think a Supreme can become flawless? If they re gonna fuse it would be when they become divine, not supreme or even sacred.

Mordreth can't fail Apotheosis, because that would mean madness or death. Mordreth can't become a Spirit, because that would affect the balance of power too much. (If Mordreth is evil, humanity is dead; if Mordreth is good, humanity's enemies are dead.) So I'm curious what else could happen. As I said, Mordreth is neither a man nor a god; Mordreth is a reflection, a creation of Nothing. And Nothing is directly related to the law of deficiency. I don't think Mordreth will be able to completely rid himself of his deficiency, but he can replace or change its form.

The most probable thing to happen is that Mordret will fail, but it will give insight to Cassie to become supreme, also it could also give insight to asterion in what Mordret failed to become sacred and will attempt apotheosis, that’s when probably sunny will be remembered and Cassie is going to piece herself to become supreme. I think it’s supreme Cassie who’s going to beat asterion

I would be really disappointed if asterion were to be only be defeated by cassie. I mean it's clear cassie is going to be a supreme after remembering sunny. but asterion is not someone who she alone be able to defeat.for dead god's sake currently asterion is only second to final boss(aka dream god) and i am not talking according to power scaling but in a story impact way. after giving asterion so much hype sunphis has to work together with VTB, secret of the oblivion should also be used, cassie with her supreme aspect and likely good modret also should join. lord asterion deserves battle at this level against all of them after this much hype as a final boss before 5th NM

Everyone!!! If Asterion's power is the "IDEA" of him. Don't you guys think Mordret can use it against him by using the power of "Misinformation." I mean it is used in the modern politics all the time and with ascent of internet and AI, more too. Infact I beg the question why didn't Nephis & Sunny thought of this tactic - like If somehow through constant barrage of misleading and false information you can make a large no. of people believe that Asterion only has one eye, or one leg or 'oh! Poor him how sick & fragile he has become while living in exile' , it's like changing the 'idea' of Asterion that he has planted in the masses with false information, I mean most of the people hasn't even seen Asterion by that time.
Same as Mordret can create and plant false information by spreading it among the humanity's forces he is battling on different planes using his incarnations and the one he himself possessed like - 'oh! Your poor sovereign now I have cut his poor hand, his legs and now slash on his chest, oh! and now he is dying poor him ' I mean thousands of Mordret say it at the same time, it will be like a big announcement of sort, you know how shounen manga characters announce their moves name before attacking, just like that. Because the masses that is the soldiers of humanity think that, that's how Asterion looks, & he is an amazing being and who can harm him, no one touch him, there will not be a harm on him, no sword can touch him' that's the reason despite Mordret cutting Asterion's hand and leg and everything, he always goes back to being completely fine like nothing has ever even touched him because that's idea the masses, the humanity have of him but if Mordret says those things he will solidify the idea among the soldiers that he, the Asterion really has been cut, this is what's happening right now on the battlefield between Asterion & Mordret
If the "idea of him among the masses" is his biggest power, Why don't just Distort and mold and completely and thoroughly thrash the "idea" the masses have of him.
That's what actually modern politician try to do through their speeches, granted that one has to use cunning and manipulative language to just slightly mold the truth to cause massive damage to your opponent.
What do you people think ? Sure it can have some drawbacks, afterall Asterion literally has the Information Control Panel & Censorship Board in his brain. But still this is one the thing the trio could have tried, distorting the 'physical idea' of Asterion instead of distorting the 'idea of respect and prestige' he has. Did that has affected him physically?

sadly it doesn't seem to work like that, fighting asterion on the public level doesnt work because he is not a charismatic politician : He is a VIRUS.

Imagine COVID but the symptom is mind control that mimicks as free will , the pathogen is the name/idea of asterion and the transmission pathway is the name asterion... you cannot win in a debate because logic does not work against mind control that is why sunny and nephis tried technique that are similar to current days pandemiology: vaccination center ( cassie wiping the name of asterion off people's mind ) etc. to give you a clear ex of why logic doesnt work look no further than the song sisters, they perfectly knew that following asterion was stupid and detrimental for them but they joined him in the end... they are mind controllled into thinking that asterion is the best, even sunny kept saying his name.
