Chapter 2934: Fortress of Time

Sunny and Nephis forgot about the food, the wine, and the tea.

The eerie stillness, the silence, the dead emptiness of it all... was the doing of a human? Of a Supreme born from the River People?

"How?"

It was only recently that Nephis said that they did not understand the divine sorcery of Ariel, the Demon of Dread, and therefore could not know how the Great River had been brought to a halt.

And yet, Cronos seemed to have figured it out.

Ananke chuckled.

"That, I cannot answer. I knew Cronos better than most, but even I did not know what was going on in his head. At times, it seemed like no one did, not even Cronos himself. His brilliant mind was full of the past, the present, and the future. Things that had already happened to the rest of us were a mystery to him, at times, and things that were yet to happen were like a distant memory. His ideas were always outrageous, and things that everyone considered impossible were often nothing but a fascinating puzzle to him."

Her smile dimmed a little.

“It often felt like he was lost in his own mind, out there at the end... ah, but I am getting ahead of myself. First, Cronos had a problem, and he found a way to solve it. He took his shipmates and sailed past Verge, into the Estuary — and there, he did something to break the cycle of the Great River. He made it stop."

She looked at Sunny and Nephis with a wry expression.

“And just like that, the River People weren't divided anymore. We were not chained to our cities anymore, and when the Defiled attacked, we had a choice of retreating from the battle — or launching an attack of our own. There was some hesitation, of course, but eventually, we all decided to abandon the waters where we had been born. Although... we, people of Weave, had hesitated the longest."

Ananke sighed.

"By then, I had long left the Time Slayer and returned home to take my place as the Priestess. Weave was constantly under attack, and every battle we won came at a terrible price. But still, we were reluctant to abandon the city our elders were exiled to and join the people who had driven them away. In the end, however, the war against the horrors of the future became too untenable, and we prepared to sail into the past... what used to be past, at least, before the River died."

Sunny shifted slightly.

"Nephis and I sailed past the ruins of Weave on our way here. We saw the signs of the battle... what destroyed it, in the end?"

Ananke looked into the distance, a somber expression appearing on her lovely face. She remained silent for a while, then took a deep breath.

"That, we do not know either. On the last day we spent in Weave before abandoning it forever, a swarm of the Corrupted, far more terrifying than any before it, descended upon us like a curse. The battle was desperate... I led our warriors to hold the enemy back while those who could not fight fled. We were planning to sever the anchors of the Houses of Youth and use them as ships to sail downstream, but people needed time to reach them."

Her expression turned distant as she recollected the desperate battle from the ancient past.

"We were successful, in the end. We stalled the enemy long enough for the Houses of Youth to sail. My warriors retreated, as well — or at least tried to. We were on the outskirts of the city, besieged from all sides and only a few minutes away from being eradicated, when it happened. The sky seemed to ripple, and a vast darkness escaped from the rifts torn in its azure expanse like a flood. Then, something dark and formless plummeted into the River, piercing the heart of the city — the island where the Temple of the Nightmare Spell stood."

She paled a little, then shook her head with a heavy sigh.

"The destruction caused by the impact was so devastating that most of the city was instantly shattered and drowned. It was heartbreaking, to see Weave drown right before my eyes... but, at the same time, the Corrupted had already overrun it by then. So, they suffered from the calamity the most — in fact, most of them were torn apart and killed by the shockwave. That was why my remaining warriors and I managed to escape, in the end."

Sunny frowned.

“Was it another abomination from upstream? What was its Rank? What was its Class?"

Ananke shook her head.

"I couldn't tell you. That thing had always existed in the Tomb of Ariel, arriving once in a few generations, moving across the sky like a comet made out of pure terror — although it began to appear more often after the Great River died. But no one was ever able to see what was hidden under the churning darkness that surrounded it. People called it the Dark Wanderer and believed it to be an omen of great destruction. Perhaps it was indeed a Corrupted being of immense power, or perhaps it was simply a manifestation of the River dying. A symptom of the walls of the realm Ariel had created slowly coming undone."

She shrugged.

“Perhaps it is moving across the sky above us right at this moment... only, with the suns gone, we cannot see it pass."

She looked away, as if reminiscing about the past.

"The Dark Wanderer appeared before the final siege of Verge, as well. And that siege ended in great and irrevocable devastation, indeed. So perhaps it really was an evil omen."

Ananke sighed and looked back at Sunny and Nephis.

“After King Cronos stopped the River, all the humans who remained alive in the Tomb of Ariel eventually came to dwell in a single city — in Fallen Grace. Fallen Grace was the last bastion of the River People, poised against Verge like a mortal enemy. Only, as I mentioned, its two rulers disagreed on what to do. Daeron wanted to lay siege to Verge, while Cronos wanted to create an impregnable fortress that the Defiled would never be able to breach. A fortress of time. A safe haven... an ark to weather the endless storm."

She let out a sigh.

“In the end, most of the River People chose to follow an Outsider instead of their own King. They chose to follow Daeron and the paragons of the Twilight Sea into battle... and they lost.”

Ananke's distant expression betrayed a hint of sorrow.

“Cronos was right, in the end. The First Seeker could not be destroyed. Instead, everything that touched it was destroyed — was Defiled. Countless people lost their lives, and countless more succumbed to the Corruption. The best of us perished during the first siege of Verge. The war continued for a long while after that, of course. The Serpent King besieged the cursed city several more times, but he simply could not kill the First Seeker. His glory, his cunning, his bravery... it all ended in despair."

She looked down.

"Too many of us died, and not enough were being born. We were only ever growing weaker and fewer, while the Defiled kept getting stronger and more numerous. In the span of a single generation, the River People came to the threshold of being destroyed. This was the dusk of our civilization... and finally, it all ended when the Serpent King himself was infected by a seed of Corruption during his last battle with the First Seeker."

Her eyes were wistful.

“He did not succumb to it immediately — but by then, his end was inevitable. That was when Daeron and Cronos finally joined hands again. And, together... they finally achieved their goal."

She exhaled slowly and then said in a mournful tone:

“They destroyed the First Seeker. They erased the Defilement from existence, and laid ruin to Verge."

Sunny was utterly stunned for a moment. He even forgot to breathe.

"What? How?"

Ananke smiled sadly.

“We starved them."

She looked at the delicious food arrayed on the table and sighed.

“Cronos had never been able to build his arc. But in the end, he did... he built it from the Serpent King’s bones. From his Soul Sea, as well. Daeron helped Cronos devise the sorcery and sacrificed himself to form its walls. While Cronos... Cronos sacrificed his remaining time. They built a miniature realm inside the realm of Ariel, one that could exist outside time for a while — and so, we hid inside of it and waited. The River People abandoned the Great River, leaving it to their enemy. To the Defiled... and without humans to devour, the Defiled starved."

Ananke chuckled.

"Nothing could touch the First Seeker without becoming Corrupted. So what could destroy the First Seeker?"

She sighed.

“The Corrupted... the Corrupted could. Left without anything to feed upon, they eventually turned to the greatest source of sustenance left on the Great River — to the vast, abominable sea of flesh that had created them. The Defiled devoured the First Seeker, and in the end, they devoured each other as well. All that was left of them were bones."

Ananke looked at Sunny and Nephis and smiled wistfully.

“That was how the Defilement was destroyed."

Yo yo yo guys, I just noticed something. In Sunny's third nightmare, during his conversation with Daeron, he says, "I am the bastard son of fate, I am the heir of death, wherever I go, ruin follows me." Isn't destruction/ruin another meaning of Nephis's real name? And right now, she following Sunny 😶 Just saying.

Little ling birth inside the nightmare brings many plot holes. I understand he's a Dreamspawn therefore he ages normally but why did the nightmare spell directly promoted a baby Saint and didn't consider it invalid. Didn't pass sleeper, awakening, master jump directly to saint.

Here's an idea, since sunny is still getting the nightmare call when he encountered the 7th seed he should start over the 1st nightmare bring along like a thousand mundane shadow clan followers. Maybe he'll get another divine aspect and lineage for blood weave to eat. Then proceed to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th. Bringing along everyone needing their promotion seed level requirement. The spell doesn't care about the validity of the challenger anyways

I'm pretty sure 1k sovereigns would be a sufficient fighting force right?

Any non-constructed being inside a nightmare at the end of it gets promoted to the correct rank. Nephis skipped from Dormant to Ascended, after all. And despite him not being a carrier at that point, Sunny got sainthood, so Ling did too.

                  Are you referring to Daeron's
                  Failure?

Failure depends on the will of the challenger/leader carrying the group to victory.

Sunny and Nephis had faced that type of insurmountable situations where the only outcome is death and failure but went ahead and turned out successful anyways.

What's stopping them from promoting a large enough fighting force when the loopholes are so obviously right there in front of their faces?

With the knowledge they have, It won't even have any of the unknown factor anymore. The war realm is lost anyways, why waste all those precious seeds?

Can a person enter a Nightmare below their rank? I don't recall anyone saying anything about that. Perhaps the Spell stops protecting such candidates from corruption. Only VTB did this, and even that's not certain. In any case, if it were possible, many Saints would help their children in second Nightmares. And the second reason is justice. The Spell is cruel, but fair. How many Sacred Seekers will appear if a Sovereign or Spirit decides to help a couple of masters? And no one wants to drag useless ballast into a Nightmare of their own rank. No one knows how the Spell chooses the Nightmare difficulty, and absolutely no one wants to test it. But even so, it's strange that no one has tried what Daeron did. For example, entering the Nightmare with an entire battalion. Or tried?

If Sunny and rain aren't Carrier's of the nightmare spell then how come he's still getting the call? Also there's there's another plot hole with the sovereigns being able to get billions of non awakened, non spell carriers into the dream realm no?

Sunny is able to artificially simulate billions of carriers but he can't do that to make himself or Rain enter the 1st nightmare?

Like I previously mentioned, little ling being born saint opens too many holes. Is he a nephilim, an abomination like nephis? Is he even a carrier of the spell? Or naturally awakened like Rain?

G3 may have swallowed without chewing first and now it's coming back to bite him in his ass on its way out. Just by the baby name alone "little Ling" I'm pretty sure he got the idea from hanging out with cuttlefish.

To answer your question about the difficulty, they're categorized as 1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7. Each seed zero is implanted/infected on the carrier and able to enter the 1st nightmare as an entry into the dream realm on solstice as a sleeper from the waking world. That's their entry into the dream realm.

All that walks the path of ascension are getting the call.
The seed calling them so they can get corrupted.
The spell protected it's carrier by putting them in nightmare spell.

Theoretically, yes Sunny can bring 1000 challenger with him. But ensuring their safety will makes his probability of conquering the nightmare lower. I'm not sure where you get the idea of putting someone in their soul sea, as far as I remembered no one managed to do it. Even Effie's memory needed to be summoned when she store anyone in it.
And the only known memory that can store a living person is Effie's pendant, and it's relatively new, with all the risk that comes in bus carrying a nightmare, it's normal they didn't try it

Nightmares are created by the Forgotten God, not the Spell.

What do you mean by "simulate"? And no, it can't. The seed of the first Nightmare appears in the souls of those infected with corruption somehow. The soul of an Awakened one should be more resistant to corruption by definition, which means the gates of the first Nightmare simply can't appear there. The only option is to enter someone else's gate of the first Nightmare. Somehow.

And what holes are you talking about? The only question I couldn't answer right away was why Ling Ling was able to escape the Nightmare? Because he entered it. Which means Ling Ling wasn't born at the moment of birth, but at the moment of conception. Simple, right? (Perhaps there is another explanation, since VTB also escaped the Nightmare.)

Do you think it was fair it counted Ling2 as a saint challenger and succeed skipping sleeper, awakening and everything else the rest of humanity and Sunny's cohort as well as the people that died challenging the seed? 13m people challenged the seed, sunny and cohort too almost died, spent several lifetimes and loops. All little ling2 did was borned eat and sleep.

Still don't consider it a loophole? What about this?

Do you think it was fair it counted Ling2 as a saint

Of course, he wasn't very helpful, but he did his best. Don't underestimate his efforts just because of his age.
What about above their rank? What rank was Ling2 entertaining the Nightmare? The spell didn't even consider his rank right?
                  13 million of Daeron's army?

Yep, no problem. The spell never prevented you from entering a Nightmare above your rank. Ling was considered an ordinary person, and that's also a rank (God, Spirit, Sovereign, Saint, Master, Awakened, and Ordinary Person, 7 at all). Sleeping is an artificial rank created by the spell. It's a crutch. The same goes for Awakened and Ordinary People from Daeron's domain.

If we're talking about the fairness of the Spell... I don't really want to talk about fairness. In my understanding, Nightmares are small, artificial worlds created by the Forgotten God and the Spell based on a distant history. It's a literal reconstruction of the past, so the Spell doesn't have much control over its complexity. The only thing the Spell can do is provide Echoes and Memories and choose the starting bodies and positions. Perhaps the Spell can alter the ultimate goal of the Nightmare. Or maybe not. In addition, the Spell that the Nightmares must be tightly linked to fate, which is a huge headache. Was the third Nightmare so complex because it included 13 million people, or because it was destined to include 13 million people? Or was it because it included Sunny's cohort? Or was it because it included VTB? Or was it simply a complex nightmare that included 13 million people, Sunny, Nefis, and VTB because its so unique? Or was it just influenced by the Weaver and the Spell?

You keep contradicting your own statements. It's fair but it isn't fair. It checks the challengers rank but it doesn't. You sound just like cuttlefish.

Bottom line it's a loophole that G3 didn't catch and was likely an idea suggested by Cuttlefish.

Every author has their unique style, and the difference between G3 and cuttlefish? G3 cooks well, with every detail and event well thought and properly prepared. Even when you find something confusing in chapter 2901, you might find the answer in chapter 15. That's how meticulous G3 is.

Where as cuttlefish keeps blending incoherent ingredients in a sloppy mix of blended popularity contest; but every idea is something that'll entice the readers. Or plots and stories copied from other bestsellers modified to his own mix.

It's Chinese style Novel porn cuttlefish cooking. Suicide and reincarnation are how most best sellers start, so let's go with that. Sex change is pretty fad now, let's change everyones sex orientation. Harems are selling, let's put in a harem. Pirates are trending, everyone becomes a pirate. I just saw this scary bad ass clown movie, I'll put that in.

I imagine the dialogue like this...
Cuttlefish to G3: "why don't you put a super baby character named Ling Ling. Overload it with cuteness and power. It'll be pretty easy to sort it out later. It's just one baby."
                  G3: "okay I'll try it"

                  That's pure cuttlefish novel porn

Well I got news for you cuttlefish, you can fool them young kids passing your stolen plots as new ideas, but us oldies who's read them classics can see right through your scam.

Oh, don't lie. I never said the Spell wasn't fair. I just said I didn't know how it determined the difficulty of the Nightmare. And I didn't say the Spell doesn't check the challenger's rank.
And again, Ling Ling's ascension isn't a plot hole. It's normal for an author to add something inexplicable just to provide an explanation later. The Six Gods are a prime example. There's no point in criticizing Ling2 for being clichéd or formulaic. g3 has always borrowed ideas, techniques, and imagery, just like any other author. Just because you don't like a certain character doesn't mean they're completely shit.
I'm not a fan of lotm, so feel free to criticize it. In fact, I'm excited about it. Seeing something different from the endless lotm glaze is like drinking ice-cold water on a hot day.

So you're saying the 1st nightmare wasn't Sunny's entry into the dream realm?
Quote: Chapter 29: The Last Day On Earth

                  Shadow Slave
On the day of the winter solstice, Sunny woke up feeling tired and drowsy. No matter how much he tried to shake off this listlessness, it wouldn't go away. In the end, he just stayed in the bed for a while, wrapping himself in a blanket.

He was already familiar with this feeling of neverending, ensnaring sleepiness. It was the same in the days before his First Nightmare. It was also quite similar to what he had experienced while slowly dying of hypothermia on the slopes of the Black Mountain.

Remembering the cold embrace of approaching death, Sunny couldn't help but shiver.

This was his last day on Earth… at least for a while. By nightfall, the Spell was going to take him away once again, this time to challenge the vast expanse of the Dream Realm.

gang.. the nightmares are all conjured up by the spell itself. the forgotten shore was the first time sunny ever really went to the dream realm

im not even caught up rn i stumbled across this argument on the bit on the desktop version of this site where it shows recent comments

Every skimwalker is ganging up on me again because you assume I said that nightmares and the dream realm is the same thing.

I NEVER SAID SUCH A THING!!!

It's your skimwalking that's leading to assumptions on what I said and didn't say

First everyone assumes I said to put 1k people into the sea soul or beast amulet, then you assume I said the nightmare and dream realm is the same thing.

I said the 1st nightmare was Sunny's entry into the dream realm as stated there on chapter 29. So how can the entry and the dream realm and nightmares be the same thing? Get better reading comprehension skimwalkers

All those are your assumptions of what I said but didn't say. Your words not mine.

So you're saying the 1st nightmare wasn't Sunny's entry into the dream realm?

this is from the comment i replied to. this implies that you think the 1st nightmare = entering the dream realm

This is from the quote in the same comment. It says that the spell is taking him away again, and that THIS TIME is when he'll be taken to the dream realm. proves you wrong (provided the implication of your words is correct, if its not the thats js ineffective communication from you

Doesn't make sense for Sunny to be the dark wanderer since this is the first time he's physically been to the Tomb..and it's not the vtb because it would've only been active after the escaping the Nightmare. If it's not a new nightmare creature it's probably one of the characters previously mentioned like Windflower or something Or maybe even one of the Nine..those guys seem to are the worst

VTB must live in the heart of the Tomb, which contains a passageway to the river's past and future. So nothing prevented her from traveling through time. It's even possible that VTB began her own regression story.

Nah, Unless Cronos is still alive and he broke the river of time after The Tomb of Ariel arc ended; the vtb would not have been able to travel in time using the river. But clearly Ananke insinuates that these events with Daeron and Cronos happened a long time ago...unless there's 2 vtbs (the original and the nightmare version that escaped) in which case it would be the original vtb that might be dark wanderer but unlikely..how Sunny describes the vtb for the first time and how the dark wanderer is described is not the same..especially considering its a freaking Cursed Terror possibly evolving to Titan.

I believe it's VTB Spawn. It makes sense since he was a shapeless shadow when he was in Sunny's Sea Soul, and no one ever managed to see what was behind the Dark Wanderer's churning darkness, as mentioned in this chapter. It would be similar to Condemnation when Sunny expelled it from her soul in Ariel's Game of Death.
