Chapter 2923: A Dead World

Sunny almost shuddered when he sensed the flotsam, but it was not the familiar piece of wood — a piece of the Chain Breaker's broken hull — covered by a mad weave of runes. Instead, it was a small fragment of a thick bone plate, fractured and covered in soot.

Sunny slowed down to observe the flotsam closely, then swam past it and moved further downstream.

As they advanced forward slowly, there was more and more debris in the water around them.

And then, they saw it...

The corpses.

There were dead Nightmare Creatures drifting in the water, cold and unmoving. Some seemed to have been crushed, the rest bore no visible wounds. One thing that united them all was that they were dead, and had been dead for a long, long time.

It was just that their flesh did not rot... because the waters of the Great River stood still, and therefore time had no power over them.

Sunny manifested his second incarnation on the back of the first one, standing close to Nephis.

“What happened here?"

His quiet voice echoed above the dark water, spreading far and wide.

Nephis remained silent for a while, then raised her hand to illuminate the dark waters around them. The feeble flame that had been burning on her palm had grown strong and blindingly radiant by then, shining like a little star.

In the stark white light of the dancing flame, they could see the ghastly carcass in every gruesome detail.

Eventually, she said:

“It was killed by a shockwave."

Sunny raised an eyebrow, while Nephis looked around with a somber expression.

"The Nightmare Creatures did not die in these waters. All of it — the debris, the corpses — rained down from the sky after being flung outward by a monstrous explosion... or at least a monstrous impact that created a devastating shockwave. Followed by an actual wave — a tsunami, really."

Sunny studied their surroundings once more, forced to admit that her theory sounded correct. Few people knew more about explosions, impacts, and shockwaves than the Star of Ruin, after all.

But what had caused that shockwave?

And where had the impact happened? What had been caught in its epicenter?

Sunny's heart felt heavy because he had an idea about what the answer to his last question was.

‘Please, let me be wrong...’

But he wasn't wrong.

Soon enough, they saw something towering above the surface of the water. It was one of the island-ships that comprised Weave — or rather, a fragment of it, shattered and half-drowned.

The buildings that had littered its surface once were now piles of rubble, the orderly streets were fractured and covered in dried blood, the trees that grew in tenderly nurtured gardens had been burned, with nothing but charred stumps left in their place.

There were more dead Nightmare Creatures floating in the water now, as well.

Nephis pointed to one of them.

“Look."

Sunny had already noticed it.

Most of the corpses were the same as the ones they had seen before, but some bore more familiar wounds — wounds that had been left by harpoons, arrows, and sharp blades.

"There was a battle here.”

Nephis nodded quietly, her face turning distant and still.

"Yes. The city was besieged... and then, it was destroyed."

Sunny's heart fell.

They continued forward, encountering more and more of the same — the shattered remains of Weave, the corpses of the Nightmare Creatures, and an echoing emptiness left in the wake of people that weren't here anymore.

It must have... it must have been a bitter battle, for the people of Weave. Because it was a battle from which they could never retreat — the River People could not move freely across the Great River, after all. Going too far either downstream or upstream meant death, so they would have had to defend their city to the last drop of blood, even if they had no hope of winning.

Sunny closed his eyes for a moment.

He still remembered the day Ananke brought them to Weave... the pride and care the priestess of the Nightmare Spell felt when looking at her empty, dead city. The stories about it she had told him, hoping that he would bring them away with him and tell those who lived outside the Tomb of Ariel about her people.

About Weave.

The city was gone now, and only its ruins remained. Eventually, even they would be swallowed by the Great River, erasing the last traces of the mortals who lived and died here.

He sighed.

Eventually, they reached the heart of the city — what had been its heart, at least. Strangely enough, there was no debris here. No corpses were floating on the water. Instead, a vast circle of dark water stretched toward the horizon, perfectly empty and still.

“This was the epicenter."

Neph's voice sounded dull.

Sunny could see it, as well. The inconceivable shockwave that tore apart the city, killed countless Nightmare Creatures, and sent their giant carcasses flying across dozens of kilometers had started here, in the heart of Weave.

Sunny swam to the middle of the circle of empty water and stopped there for a while, looking around in silence. Nephis was silent as well, staring at the drowned ruins that surrounded them with an inscrutable expression.

Eventually, she sighed.

“There was a woman who helped me in the Nightmare, you know. A priestess of the Nightmare Spell. I wanted to save her, but failed. She vanished without a trace, having sacrificed herself to pave the way for me."

Turning her head, she looked at Sunny and smiled bitterly.

"I've watched countless people die, but her death dealt me a truly painful blow. Maybe it was because she reminded me of my grandmother. Or perhaps because she looked like a child, back there at the end.”

Turning away, Nephis let out a quiet sigh.

“That was why I hoped to meet her again, in the real Tomb of Ariel. But I guess... it wasn't meant to be."

Sunny did not answer, because he was incapable of answering sincerely. Whatever he said would be forgotten, just like he had been... leaving Nephis to carry the burden of all these scars and losses alone.

Thinking that she had been carrying them alone all along.

His gaze turned downstream — where, somewhere far away, the Estuary lay hidden in the mist.

"...What do you think destroyed the city?"

Nephis remained silent for a long while, then said in an even tone:

“There is no way to tell. However... I did notice something strange."

Sunny looked at her.

“What, exactly?"

Studying the ruins of Weave with a slight frown, Nephis pointed to the pulverized corpses of myriad abominations drifting in the still water.

“All these dead Nightmare Creatures..."

She paused for a moment and then asked:

"But where are the humans?"

Sunny frowned.

Nephis continued in her usual calm tone:

“Where are the corpses of the humans who fought these abominations? From the moment we neared Weave until now, I haven't seen a single dead human drifting in the water. So where did all the bodies go?"

Sunny shivered.

He did not like the sound of that, one bit. Hearing about missing corpses, he couldn't help but think about a procession of terrifying horrors. The Terror of LO49 — who had been Dusk, the Sybil of Fallen Grace once — the Soul Stealer, the Skinwalker... He remained silent for a short while, and then said quietly:

“Maybe they are gone, just like that priestess you spoke about was gone. Perhaps the ruins of Weave drifted too far downstream, and they all vanished.”

Nephis frowned.

"But there is no downstream now. The Great River is not flowing anymore."

Sunny sighed.

"Then, I don't know."

She looked at the forlorn, broken ruins of Weave once more and then turned away.

“There is nothing here for us to find. Let us leave... let's try to find Fallen Grace. Maybe we will find an answer there."

Sunny nodded.

At the same time, he lowered his giant head down to the water and moved his enormous body, cutting across the still water.

They left the ruins of Weave the same way they found them, empty and forlorn.

The suns were gone, and the Great River stood still. The only things they had encountered here were dead and broken, and nothing challenged the boundless silence but the sound of their own voices. Swimming away from Weave, Sunny could not help but feel that he had found himself in a place that no mortal should ever have seen.

That he had entered a dead world... the frozen fragment of a ruined world that remained, still and unchanging, after the end of time. Like a dark image on a length of film left to collect dust in the reel, never to see the light of the projector and come to life once again.

And once that thought entered his mind, he couldn't help but think about something else, as well...

Would the whole world look like that, one day, if they failed to stop the Nightmare? Sunny gritted his fangs.

'We'd better not fail, then.'

He had been telling himself that quite often lately.

2410 myriad of stars. it clearly says the most amazing thing and what we should be theorizing about and it is that it said that weaver got 11 more constelations as bright as his. So if we count there are 12 in total suppressing FG, thats 13 so there is one divine from the age of gods that wasnt affected by weavers lullaby. Probably is oblivion cuz its the one who appears to still have influence on the world bc people still cant remember himherit idk. There is a non zero chance that sunny and neph meet oblivion in his tomb and that way deal with asterion instead of a pet VTB fantasy. Also it may help with the fact of sunny having weaver legacy and with his relation to FG.

I have been thinking of a scenario which I guess alot of us would have thought.

The Doom or 7th Nightmare Gate where the Forgotten God sleeps is extremely close to Sunny.

What are the implications of Sunny getting his fate back from the Vile Thieving Bird?
People would recall who he was, and hence indirectly Weaver.

Would that not speed up the awakening of the Forgotten God?
    Thoughts?

It's difficult, for most people he's dead, whether they remember him or not, he's dead. But does it matter if he is dead or alive for "worship"?

Your right. Doesn't really matter if one is dead or alive.

Gods, dead. Shadow god, dead. Immortals, dead. Jet, dead. Sunny, dead. The only ones alive are either asleep or almost dead.

To be alive is to be on the constant path of dying everyday. It's irrelevant if sunny regains fate and people remember. He's dead anyways but being dead doesn't matter much in SS.

If Suneph loot weaver's eye in one of VTB stash it'll be an actual divine artifact like shadow lantern maybe more because it's not a product of the spell. I don't think Cassie can use it

Sovereign sunny isn't capable of using weaver's mask ability 15% he often just wears it to use it's passive "Side effects" how much more integrating Cassie with Weaver's actual eye?

What do I think will happen to Cassie once she puts on weaver's eye?

This is just a hunch but I think... weaver's divinity may fracture her consciousness placing her in a lost state in an abyss of shattered memories. She will need to use her Will as a shield to selectively endure and extract critical insights without her mind breaking. This exposure to forbidden knowledge will put her soul at risk of Corruption, forcing her into a constant battle to preserve her mind and soul from infection.

Is it not possible that the one who killed NM creatures were Sunphis of future?

    Just follow me

*Sunny and Neph on their way to challenge 7th NM after becoming Divine.
*They go into ToA before 7th NM.
*Sunny and Nepf fight there and plan to rescue people of Weave.
*They know that PoW will die after travelling far from Weave.
*So to rescue people from Weave, they destroy the law of time (that stopped the flow of river), and take poeple out of the tomb.

Now here is my ques: The time in estuary is stopped, we saw supreme sunny talking with master sunny so why didn't we see weaver in there? Or Aierel? Afterall they both came to estuary.

My assumption: probably ToA cant handle the power of a Divine and allow them to interact with different timeline. Take example of a Game server, it automatically transfer people in different lobby if one is unable to handle more people. ToA is same, it don't have enough energy/power (or waterver it use to make people of different time to interact with each other) to allow Divine to interact with different timeline

    Now lets continue
*The time in ToA stopped, and people of Weave were taken out of ToA(that's why there is no corpse).

So the reason Sunny and Neph can't se any1 is beacuse there is no one in ToA.
For people who are going to sat that this is very far fetched, remember what Emperor Roselle once said "Make bold assumption and back it up", so give it another round of thought and jump in a discussion below.

However. that's in the future- if they destroyed the rules that made time flow differently in the river and it effected *the present* then they'd be in the same world as supreme sunny and supreme nephis while both being divine.

probably more likely the reason the river refuses to flow now is because VTB stole the *unholy titan's* seven cores.

(this also dismantles your arguement because of the fact the river is powered by a divine power)
and the third thing is, with them inside we see that the call of the nightmare can't be heard, or responded to. (therefore, they couldn't of accessed the 7th nightmare from the inside)

        That's why I said
give it another round of thought

Didn't I write there that it's not possible for ToA to let Divine interact with another timelines because it doesn't have enough power to do so, thts why we didn't see Weaver or Aeriel.
and the third thing is, with them inside we see that the call of the nightmare can't be heard, or responded to. (therefore, they couldn't of accessed the 7th nightmare from the inside)
also, when did I say that Suny and Neph will try to challange 7th NM from inside the Tomb? They obviously came from outside after becoming Divine.

1st point. the daemons walked the path of ascension and only had 1 core (supposedly). meanwhile, the unholy titan had seven. that should mean it has enough essence to support the interaction of two divine beings. and even if not, it would have generated a false copy, likely. 1.1 is that ariel made this to hide all the truths he didn't want to know. (and the demons who are usually censored) would likely be 'forbidden truth' which could be another reason they aren't mentioned.

2nd point.. why would they come back inside? the vibe i get is that the entire pyramid would dis-assemble if the source of every single nightmare seed (which is what the pyramid is made of) disappeared after they challenged the seventh. and also why even would they challenge the 7th nightmare?

Then just tell me why did we not see Weaver and Aeriel inside the 3rd NM
By your logic shouldn't they also appear in the 3rd NM,

Your second point says that pyramid would break( removed from existence ) when they finish 7th NM, right? Now, tell me some reasons why it would?
ToA was made even before Seeds of Nightmare were in existence, so there is no need for it to disappear if 7th NM is cleared

No, by my logic they shouldn't because they are forbidden knowledge. Misread?

And the unholy titan the pyramid is made of wasn't nightmare seeds previously. It was an unholy titan, and therefore it had to be the 7th nightmares's doing, so it does have evidence that it would collapse after the 7th was destroyed (especially since in the present the cores holding it together are already destroyed)
, what evidence do you have that it was divine sunny and nephis? Because i can name quite a few reasons it isn't.

            1. There's no evidence that Demons only had one core. And even if they did have one core, a living Demon should be superior to a dead Unholy Titan folded into onigiri. 1.1. Ariel decides what is forbidden truth and what is not. In the Tomb, of course. Ariel loved his siblings, and I don't think he wanted to forget them. 2.2. Obviously, to save Aunt Ananke. And take all treasures.

              1. No evidence they had more than 1 core either (besides the point is done and void because we see hope in Sunny's master nightmare)
1.1 hmm.. mnn.. no, yeah i agree with you.

              2. If the river is already destroyed in the present, she is dead, and everything she has is already gone. + The only treasure in there is knowledge and they wouldn't need to destroy the river for that, a divine being could simply will it and they'd be at the estuary.

                1. Of all the creatures presented, only humans are limited to a single core. Demons are definitely not humans, so they probably have multiple cores. 1.0.1 I literally didn't understand what you said. 1.1 In that place, there were the Weaver (who constantly wears a mask), Oblivion (no need to explain), VTB (who probably hides well too), and possibly Ariel (who didn't have a specific and important reason to visit Oblivion's grave). Here's what you could respond. 2. The whole point of the theory is that Sanphis use their divine power and the nature of the river of time to break time and go back in time.

                  2. But time went by normally in the real world when 3rd nightmare was challenged so it is likely time in Ariel's tomb is localised, and doesn't effect the entire world (supported by the fact Time still passes outside) and if that is the case the tomb would be intact now (also how are the divines supposed to destroy the river if it's already destroyed (therefore cutting off the time travel))

(1.0.1 was me saying it can support divines which was a point made earlier in the arguements cus we see hope/desire in 2nd nightmare)

                  1. Yeah we still don't know if that's true or not therefore not worth arguing either way

As for how they would destroy the river if it's already destroyed, they(Sunphis from this timeline) don't need to do it at all, because it is already destroyed by their future. I know it's paradoxical, yet it works. Just like how Cohert's corrupted version and real existed in the 3rd NM at the same time.

2nd: it infact does not work. The reason that the chain breaker being in the 3rd nightmare works is because that was a Re-creation, however.. this is the real tomb of ariel. and that fact means they cannot have destroyed it in the future because it is currently destroyed in the present, and even if in 20 years they come back as divine beings- it's still going to be destroyed.

But humans who can't freely run away surviving for all those millions of years I doubt that's possible moreover they lack the seeds of nightmare to accelerate their ascension they were bound to be wiped out by NCs eventually .
They wouldn't have strong champions in their population after the previous ones died to NCs.

Cool theory, I thought of something similar, but related to Mordreth and Skinwalker. Unfortunately, we don't know enough. How exactly do the river and the Mouth work? How do they work now? How will they work when Sanfis breaks them even more? How does divine Will work? Too much is unknown, and so I can't criticize or complement your idea.

I have no clear objections to the energy idea. The only thing I can think of is the Mad Prince. He was in this room too. So why didn't Sunny see him? Was he too weak? Did he not enter the right area? Did Big Sunny's projection kill Mad Sunny's projection? When did that happen? Again, too much is unknown.

Personally, I feel like Big Sunny was able to pull this off because he didn't have a fate. This should make him more "free." You understand. It's even possible that this meeting was needed to return his fate back.

In any case, it's not true. If it's true, then Daeron is not in the Tomb. Why write about a Tomb that doesn't have Daeron?

The reason we didn't see mad prince there was that Sunny himself is the mad prince
Or in other words, you can say that the memories Sunny receive from Sin of Solace makes him mad prince.
So the Master Sunny present there was the mad prince without memories.

We know future sunny has no main body, isn't alive, just a formless shadow so we know he's telling the truth to his past self but why say he's not a sovereign with the flaw? Does that mean he's a Sacred Titan?!?!
Edit: weaver's mask revaluation below. Did future sunny just decieve his past self to go ahead and loose fate using weaver's mask?
Quote: legend wearing mask 🎭 removing mask 😷

    Quote: chapter: Lost Shadow
Sunny gritted his teeth. "I must say, though… it's a bit unfair. The Spell gave us our own roles, but made us mere Ascended. The two of you must be much more powerful, no? To brave the Nightmare Desert and enter the real pyramid. So, what are you? A Saint?"

‎The voice remained silent for longer now, then sighed. 🎭"Yeah… a Saint."
‎Sunny frowned, judging how long the pause before the answer had been.

‎"Bastard… did you just summon Weaver's Mask?!"

‎The voice laughed. 🎭"Did I? No, I absolutely did not. Trust me, I'm telling the truth...😷 I'm the most honest person in the world, after all. Two worlds, even."

‎'Did he summon it or not?'

‎Was this future version of Sunny really a Saint? No, like hell he was… a mere Saint would not have been able to turn the shadows against Sunny so easily, and neither would his voice possess such an harrowing power to it. Sunny shivered. "You… you're a Sovereign? Damnation, what the hell?! After everything we experienced in this damned place, why would you go and challenge another Nightmare?! Are you that tired of living?"

‎The voice did not respond for a while. Then, his answer came, calm and insidious: 🎭

    ‎ 🎭"I am not a Sovereign, though."
