Chapter 2868: For Every Action

There was one advantage to the fact that Cassie had been cut off from all but one of her marks, even if it left her blind, deaf, ignorant, and deprived of all senses in their absence.

It was the fact that her mind was unburdened for the first time in many years.

With no need to carry the weight of countless perspectives, be aware of myriad events happening simultaneously across the two worlds, and parse through an unceasing avalanche of conflicting sensations, Cassie felt a refreshing sense of clarity.

Her potent mind was completely free and focused, and all its tremendous capacity could be dedicated to a single task.

In this case, Cassie focused it on controlling the Crushing.

The Crushing was a vast and fierce force capable of influencing entire regions of the Dream Realm. However, that did not mean that it couldn't be used in a more refined manner — Cassie had just never attempted it before, since that was not something that a Saint was supposed to be capable of, and there had not been a real need to anyway. Now, though, the Crushing was the only weapon she could rely on to survive a battle against Nightwalker.

And that was her goal — not to defeat the legendary Saint, but to survive long enough for Rain to open the portal. Cassie did not believe that she could defeat Nightwalker... not as she was now, at least. Her Aspect was matched against his too badly, and there were five other Saints who could arrive to assist him if the battle took too long on top of that.

So, she simply needed to stall for time. That was why Cassie reached inside of herself, sensing the tether that anchored her to the Dream Realm — and to the Ivory Tower, as well. It was that connection that made her the master of the Great Citadel and allowed her to control its Components. Now, she used her claim to the Tower of Hope to shape the Crushing into a devastating pillar and aim it at Nightwalker. The island shook, and a shallow crater formed where Nightwalker had been standing, a cloud of dust rising into the air. Cassie did not expect to kill or even seriously wound him with that first attack, but she did hope to slow him down. However, her hope had been shattered a second later.

She felt a powerful blow crushing her ribcage and turning her internal organs into bloody pulp, then dashed back and avoided the blow from landing on her chest.

Sliding across the emerald grass, Cassie heard the Nightwalker clicking his tongue.

'That potent...'

She knew that his Awakened Ability made it so that his body could survive in any environment, isolating it from all outside influences — as if it were a mystical EVA suit. However, she had not expected that Ability to be powerful enough to shrug off the devastating force of the Crushing.

At most, withstanding the Crushing had cost Nightwalker an ocean of essence. Cassie frowned and aimed her dagger at the spot where his voice had come from, preparing to activate her charms and launch into an attack.

Before she could, however, Nightwalker spoke.

"Is it my turn, then?"

In the next moment, Cassie shuddered and let out a loud scream.

That was because in the future she sensed, her sword arm was suddenly and violently torn off at the shoulder, flying away in a rain of blood. In the next moment, the same happened to her shield arm, and before she could cope with the terrifying pain, her neck twisted and snapped like a straw. Nightwalker did not use any weapon, or even his bare hands, to visit such a brutal death upon her.

Instead, he simply used his Aspect.

He manipulated space, expanding the precise point where Cassie's arm was to span dozens of meters. Naturally, neither her flesh nor her bones were meant to be stretched like putty — so, her skin and muscles tore, while her bones shattered, veins and ligaments snapping like strings. Worst of all, Nighwalker commanded space, which meant that Cassie could not evade the gruesome attack even if she had sensed it coming in advance.

So, she didn't.

Instead, she used the Crushing — the force of attraction — to exert a pull on space that was equal to Nightwalker's manipulation, but opposite in direction. She pulled the stretching space back to its original state and commanded her flesh and bone to be bonded together with the same force that was being exerted to pull them apart.

The world seemed to ripple as two opposite distortions twisted it in different directions.

Cassie's countermeasure succeeded... somewhat.

In that short instant between when she foresaw the attack and when the attack happened, she managed to perform a staggering amount of calculations and apply them to the world that she could only sense, not see. However, she was still merely a Saint — the finesse with which she could shape the Crushing was impressive, but not flawless.

In the end, her arm was not mangled and torn off. However, her bones did snap, and her skin tore, a torrent of blood flowing down to her hand.

Cassie caught the dagger, which had slid from her bloodied fingers, with her other hand.

Nightwalker was not going to stop at manipulating space just once, of course — in fact, the world around her was already twisting, threatening to pulverize every bone in her body and violently tear it apart. Standing perfectly still across from him, Cassie activated her Supreme charm. In the past, she had usually used it to enhance the lethality of her weapons or the durability of her armor — but that was because, in the past, her enemies had usually been Nightmare Creatures of a higher Rank than her.

Today, she was fighting a far more dreadful foe...

A fellow Saint.

So, instead, Cassie applied the enchantment of the powerful Supreme Memory to her own body.

Its material properties were instantly augmented, making her flesh more enduring, elastic, and resilient, while at the same time making her bones more robust, adamantine, and unbreakable.

A low groan escaped from her lips a moment later, still, as she sensed her body being mutilated beyond recognition a few heartbeats in the future.

So, Cassie reshaped the Crushing to keep herself alive once more.

This time, it was her shoulder that got crushed, turning into a sunken and deformed mess of torn skin, bone fragments, and freely flowing blood.

"See..."

Nightwalker's voice was full of regret.

"That was why I told you to surrender quietly..."

Cassie staggered, but kept both her balance and her grip on the hilt of the enchanted dagger.

At the same time, a soft white radiance enveloped her broken arm and her crushed shoulder, swiftly mending them to their initial state.

The world rippled once more as the insidious power of Nightwalker collided with the Crushing.

The Ivory Island quaked and groaned around them, cracks splitting its soil as the very fabric of existence was slowly coming undone...

I feel bad for Nephis. She has to depend on all these people, who can be manipulated and controlled, to have her power. Whats the point if her whole domain in based on others feeling, she can loose it as easily as she got it. In this case Sunny and Mordret are way better, even Asterion since his domain is his thralls and are in his full control.
I think Nephis would have cared little less about the population than se does now, if her domain didnt depend on it.

I think we'll have a plot twist because the "longing" aspect of the domain will play a big role in the game-changing moment. But that's just my theory.

It's not all bad, because Ariel's Tomb has cities full of potential members of her domain. There's one city there, maybe even dozens of them. (It would be pretty funny if Nethys accidentally mentioned Asterion's name in one of the cities and the plague spreads to the Tomb as well, lol.)
Plus, in theory, not only humans could be members of her domain. I'm really curious if she could cure Nightmare Creatures or even capture corrupted ones for her own domain.

Just based off this chapter. Im highly confident Nightwalker beats every one in the main cohort except Jet.

Kai maybe could survive an encounter but he couldnt beat him

In fact he could probably 1v3 Kai, cassie, and effie, but a 1v2 vs Kai and jet is a guaranteed loss

And obviously hes not beating Sunny and Nephis. Not even as saints since they both have incorporeal forms and natural counters

Nightwalker as a supreme tho would be scary asl

What I am hoping is that how some abilities evolve when one goes to a higher rank, like it did with Asterion and Sunny etc. If Nightwalker becomes Supreme, I hope his awakened ability is able to evolve where he can shroud other people in that mystical containment suit which will be so useful

I don't know about Effie though she could just take him out from far using brute force also I don't think the black hole would stop Effie in giant form yes his powers are amazing but is his own. Body more durable than Effie it's like alcides vs Gilgamesh
Natural body vs divine armor there's a difference

I dont think she could brute strength the very space Encompassing her limbs to a degree where she could fight nightwalker and live let alone win

At absolute best shed have to strain herself constantly just to not be ripped apart not really being able to do anything but that

Nightwalkers ability seems way too broken lmao

As supreme his abilities would have his will so he could attack even incorporeal forms, but sunny and nephis will would be stronger than his anyway so it would be like now that sunny uses his incorporeal form against one of the undead and sunny said that the undead was trying to use its will to attack his incorporeal form but Sunny's will was stronger so at the the attack just went through his incorporeal form without doing any damage

Why doesn't Asterion just appear right in front of Kes, like he did for Kai? How did he even manage to just show up that time? He can't be so stupid as to miss a dangerous saint a third time.

Last time, he was only able to teleport to Kai after the little dragon called his name. Asterion said he did it just to troll Kai, but he could have been lying. And even earlier, a group of cultists called his name, after which he jumped off the moon. Around that time, Sunny called Eurys Asterion. Perhaps the entire Earth unconsciously uttered his name at that moment, and that's how he was finally able to return. It must be his transformation ability or the influence of the Storm Bloodline.

Still, why doesn't the damn Nightwalker just call his daddy? Maybe that ability doesn't work so well on slaves? Trying to understand that bastard's abilities is pure torture.

Does anyone remember the chapter number where Sunny fought Revel?

His "teleportation" ability must have some limitation, similar to Sunny's shadow step. In Sunny's case, there needs to be a shadow in the place he wants to go so he can jump to it; Asterion must need someone to call his name out loud.

Seeing the creativity of how the side characters use their aspects make me so jealous Sunny is the mc. The only reason the author doesn't use the same creativity for sunny is because it would really be op. Imagine sunny commanded a shadow to slide down the enemies throat and into their stomach and he makes it expand into a bunch of saw blades rending his enemies from the inside? Or maybe he turns a shadow into a liquid with an acidic nature to dissolve his opponent from all sides. Only thing stopping him is plot😭😭 I wanna see my boy get creative too

Sure it's a reasonable reason but at the same time that's just an excuse at this point. Take how nightwalker was able to use his aspect inside Cassie. And a significant difference between all his other attempts and now is the progression of his will. His will is potent enough to survive against cursed abominations so I'm sure he can bend it to shape some shadows. Of course the examples I used were advanced but my overall point should still be clear.

Sunless (Sunny) follows a paradoxical progression where his overwhelming increase in raw power often creates a "crutch" effect, diminishing his need for the desperate, high-IQ maneuvers that defined his early survival.
‎This relationship can be expressed by the following conceptual formula:

      ‎$$C = \frac{I \times N}{P^2 + E}$$

      ‎Formula Breakdown

‎* $C$ (Creativity/Ingenuity): The final output of Sunny's ability to use his Aspect (Shadow Control, Manifestation, Step) in novel ways.
‎* $I$ (Base Intelligence): Sunny’s innate genius and analytical skills, which remain high but are often sidelined by more direct solutions as he ranks up.
‎* $N$ (Necessity/Desperation): The "Mother of Invention." In the Forgotten Shore, $N$ was at its peak because a single mistake meant death. As a Saint or Sovereign, $N$ decreases because his "base" form is already a walking natural disaster.
‎* $P$ (Raw Power/Rank): As Sunny ascends from Awakened to Saint and beyond, his essence quality and physical stats increase exponentially ($P^2$). High $P$ allows for "brute force" solutions, making complex, creative strategies redundant.
‎* $E$ (Essence Consumption/Efficiency): Higher-tier abilities (like Shadow Manifestation or Avatars) require massive amounts of essence. This often locks Sunny into "efficient" combat patterns rather than the experimental, creative flairs he used when essence was scarce.

‎Why Creativity Drops as Power Rises

‎ 1. The Brute Force Trap: When Sunny was a Sleeper, he had to use his shadows for reconnaissance and trickery because he couldn't take a hit. Now, with Bone Weave and Blood Weave, his durability allows him to simply outlast or overpower enemies, reducing the need for "genius" tactics.
‎ 2. Complexity Overhead: Managing multiple Shadow Avatars and a Domain consumes so much mental "bandwidth" that his ability to devise unique, micro-level creative uses for his Aspect is spread thin.
‎ 3. Predictability of Supremacy: As a Sovereign, Sunny’s power is so absolute that most encounters are decided by the weight of his Shadow Lantern or Domain rather than the clever "Shadow Step" maneuvers of his youth.

Dagger to the gut works just as well, and powerful enemies have Will to protect themselves. And shadows cant just take any random shape, he still struggles to maintain his shadow form, even avoiding blows is not a guarantee. It takes minutes to conjure a shadow sofa. And shadows of smaller creatures would be just as weak as small creatures.
And tricks like that would only work against humans, and he tries to avoid killing humans, or even making enemies. He had very few enemies. Lord and his lackeys on the forgotten shore, than sovereigns. He avoided killing human saints as much as he could. And Mordred is unkillable and barely counts as human.
And he did use his infinite rat to kill stuff.

Yeah I admit the examples I gave were advanced but the point is still that he should have more than enough control over his will at this point. As a supreme he should be able to enforce his will upon anything below the cursed rank and stand his ground (if not outright overpower) those of the great rank. And I'd argue that the creatures most resilient to this technique would be humans. Their will has been proven to be much more complex than most other nightmare creatures of the same rank precisely because of their intelligence.
