Chapter 2862: A Litany of Voices

[Lady Cassia! The King of Nothing has crossed the northern gorge and broken through the fortification line at Whisper Peak! We won't be able to hold out for long! Please send reinforcements immediately!]

[My lady, the supply fleet is lost. I... I am sorry. The casualties are as follows...]

[The Nightmare Gate is contained, but it opened close to the main relay substation. The electrical grid is completely disrupted, and although secondary and tertiary transformer stations were used to reroute the current, approximately twenty percent of the city is currently suffering from a complete blackout. I must reiterate the urgency of the situation, Lady Cassia — local generators installed in residential complexes will not last long. Once power goes out and ventilation systems stop functioning, the death toll on the subterranean floors...]

[Lady Cassia!]

[Lady Cassia...]

[My lady!]

Cassie's mind was filled with pleading voices.

The dreadful cacophony of their cries was deafening, washing over her like a cold ocean. They were all crying for help, desperate in the absence of their ruler... of their goddess. They wanted to be saved, and for them, salvation was synonymous with Changing Star — with the last daughter of the Immortal Flame, who had ignited their souls with hope and longing.

So, they wanted to know where she was. They wanted to know why she had abandoned them.

...Cassie wanted to know, as well.

She used to, but judging by the gaping spaces where her recent memories were supposed to be, she must have erased them. The reason why was not difficult to guess — it was to protect that knowledge from Asterion.

And since the knowledge of where the rulers of humanity had gone needed to be protected from Asterion, Cassie could deduce that he would do anything in his power to stop them if he ever found out... which, in turn, meant that what they were doing could spell the end of the Dreamspawn.

So, that was everything she knew. That Nephis and Sunny were currently doing something that would allow them to defeat Asterion, and that humanity had to endure alone until they did.

Cassie was resourceful, but she could not replace two Supremes. So even if she was doing her best, things were turning more and more dire with each day.

"...But I really think that I am on the right path."

Cassie flinched slightly, brought back from the deafening choir of desperate voices by one that sounded hopeful and bright. Rain was sitting across from her, enjoying the pancakes she had made for the two of them.

“Awakening is the process of condensing soul essence into a core. Ascension, meanwhile, is the process of reforging the core. It makes sense, if you think about it — a soul core is built from solidified essence, and the essence that solidifies under pressure to create it is Awakened. How can something built from Awakened essence contain Ascended essence, which is far more volatile and potent?"

Rain smiled.

“Ah, please forgive me, Lady Cassia. I am speaking metaphorically, of course, and my metaphors always seem to end up having to do with architecture and construction work. If you listen to me, you'd think that I am talking about building a hut, not Ascending. I can't explain it better, though... so, the problem is in reforging the core. As I see it, there are two ways of going about it — one is enlightened, slow, and conservative. The other is swift, radical, and quite possibly lethal."

Cassie raised an eyebrow.

“And these two ways are?"

Rain chuckled.

“I am glad you asked! The enlightened way is to allow Ascended essence to wash over the core like sea waves wash over the shore. In an endless cycle of tides, the composition of the core will gradually change, one sand particle at a time. Naturally, that can take decades, and one would need to either learn how to elevate the quality of their essence or have a steady supply of Ascended soul shards to substitute personal enlightenment. I can somewhat achieve the former, but I already benefit from the latter."

Cassie smiled.

"I see. And the second way?"

Rain sighed.

“The second way would be quite obvious to someone in construction. There is a hut in front of you, but you need a castle to stand in its place. Do you replace the wooden planks of the hut one by one, until it becomes a castle? No... you'd simply demolish the hut and build an entirely new castle in its place. In other words, since the core solidified from Awakened essence, it's easier to destroy it and shape an entirely new one from Ascended essence instead."

Cassie faced her with a frown.

"The destruction of the soul core usually leads to the collapse of the soul, though. It's a death sentence."

Rain looked at her pancakes with a look of disappointment.

"I know. I could not find a safe way to achieve Ascension in that manner, so... well, anyway, I am exploring the first method at the moment. What do you think?"

Cassie remained silent for a while, straining not to get lost in the roaring litany of pleading voices that thundered in her head. Eventually, she smiled.

“I think that your pancakes are getting cold. They are delicious, by the way, so it would be a shame to waste them...”

She had thought that Rain — Sunny's disciple and the only human who had managed to Awaken without the help of the Spell — would be safest here, in the Ivory Tower.

But she had been wrong.

Several days ago, Asterion had taken the Night Garden. Jet managed to escape, but all six Saints who had been with her on the titanic ship were now thralls of the Dreamspawn.

Nightwalker was among them.

Jet and Nightwalker had not managed to master the Night Garden's navigation component yet, which prevented it from making long-distance spatial jumps. But with Asterion looking over Nightwalker's shoulder and whispering secrets into his ear, things could change in an instant. Cassie had lost track of the Night Garden, so it could appear anywhere, at any moment.

Which meant that the Ivory Island was not safe anymore... or rather, it was even less safe than it had been.

Cassie did not hear the voices of those aboard the titanic ship anymore.

Her mind was overflowing with the terrifying, deafening cacophony of desperate voices...

But actually, it was not their cries that frightened her.

Instead, it was their silence.

Asterion had no one of relevance. As long as Nephis maintained the saints and the citadels, Asterion would only affect normal people and awakened ones; it would take a long time for him to start affecting masters and saints. Add to that the information that Asterion almost killed Cassie, and it would raise another barrier in people's minds against Asterion.
Sunny and Nephis were very passive from the beginning.
Asterion may be immortal, but just as Sunny would suffer if one of her shadows were destroyed or Mordret if one of her reflections, Asterion would also be affected if his body were killed.
And in the same way that that cursed creature affected the entire domain of longing through Nephis, and Asterion himself can interfere with Cassie's information network, Nephis could burn Asterion's body and soul, and through him all those who were infected, transforming the "idea" of Asterion into a synonym for pain. If this had been done as soon as he appeared in Bastion, the crisis could have been avoided for a long time.

An ascendent vessel of asterion quite literally talked to Cassie at the start of the volume. He already had ascended in his domain when he returned to earth. One of mordrets vessels dying doesn't affect him, he loses a core just to create them in the first place, and comparing aster to divine aspect holders is just foolish. Aster can't affect cassies marks/domain, Cassie removes them willingly, the cursed NC could do that because that was it's ability, Headcannoning abilities Neph has is not helping your case buddy✌️😭 You think aster is just gonna stand still and take a beating? He is absolutely going to escape easily, or the two will just end up destroying all of bastion which has been stated like half a million times.

The death of a vessel doesn't affect Mordret, but it weakens his dominion, even if only slightly. Asterion had a master when he attacked Cassie (I don't remember if there were others in that attack), but the thousands of prisoners on the forgotten shore were all awakened.

Asterion cannot be killed because it's an idea that's spread among everyone who knows his name. Nephis could use this connection to affect everyone who was infected, not to 'burn' an idea, but to distort its meaning. If Asterion's idea ceased to mean salvation and began to mean pain, he would have much more difficulty spreading his idea.

Oh yes, Bastion would be destroyed because Nephis and Sunny are incapable of taking the fight elsewhere...
The fact that they controlled themselves after what happened to Cassie is already a flaw in itself.

Asterion sold himself as such a great threat that no one bothered to try to confront him while he was weak.

You said it yourself now gng there is genuinely no correlation between aster and mordret, Asterion is not maintaing his own domain. His plague was still spreading outside the forgotten shore, idk why you keep bringing up this point. It's useless, the forgotten shore quarantine failed. They weren't able to find all of his vessels it's obvious he kept his ascendent ones under cover.

You don't need to be part of asterions domain to make him immortal, even if the name was associated with pain they would still know it and he would be immortal. Nephis has already done this method with saint thane and it crippled him mentally. Lower ranked people will be left mentally retarded permanently you fool that's a thousand times worse. My guy even if Nephis did that, she and sunny knows his name. It's explained that anvil and ki song couldn't kill him for this reason.

Explain to me how they would take the fight elsewhere. BOTH Supremes stated that they would destroy Bastion, your arguing against the characters and author here.

Why would he appear in front of people when he's at his most vulnerable lmao? They didn't even know where he was until he revealed himself. "Asterion with no domain would lose" no shit Sherlock???

If your not even going to address all my points don't respond to me.

Hey y'all I just came back from rereading Jest's flashback and there was a particular line from Anvil about Asterion that made me wonder.

"You don't have to worry about that. Asterion and I have a deal — and he is very particular about deals. So, he won't betray me."

Maybe Asterion's flaw has something to do with about always fulfilling a promise or deal. Or like Sunny, he is compelled that he cannot refuse a promise or deal. It balances out the advantage his aspect abilities give him so it's a flaw that limits the extent of his power. Because remember at the start he made a deal with Nephis and Sunny of not actively trying to undermine them or get in their way. He may have followed Sunny's style of dealing with his flaw in a bit of deceit and misdirection. He uses his powers on another to set the best conditions upon himself. There's a few clues that make me think this besides from this line from Anvil.

Remember when that Anvil came to Asterion plotting about to kill Broken Sword. That whole situation focuses on the deal between them. The details may be that he would assist him with all his effort in killing Broken Sword.

Another example is the whole custody ship of Mordret. This was the description of the Cruel Sight that Sunny got from killing the Mirror Beast.

Full of pride, the noble knight made a deal with the Dreamspawn. Years later, the knight had defeated all his enemies and became a mighty king. On the day that his son uttered the first word, the Dreamspawn came to the king and demanded his pay. He left the kingdom with the child and disappeared, never to be seen again. Much later, the young prince returned and stood beneath his father's throne. He expected to be met with joy and warmth, but was met with fear and suspicion instead.]

Perhaps this is what that deal was for Asterion to co-operate with Anvil at the same time a way for Anvil to protect Mordret from his flaw. In return, Asterion could get the War lineage from Mordret.

It may have also been the reason why Song and Anvil was able to contain him all this time after they became Supreme despite him being much stronger than them where they took advantage of his flaw.

This is very feasible. Did he make any other deals or promises with the cohort? I'm thinking Kai, Effie, Jet even Cassie seems to have spoken and made some sort of deals with him albeit unknowingly.

Seems like Asterion spoke with everyone of them first... didn't he make a deal with Kai while defending against Mordred?

Now you've mentioned it, it does seem unusual to have a modus operandi where he has a conversation first evertime on first contact.

For one, he spoke to all the saints on the meeting before launching his offensive against them

Not them but the other person I have in mind is Nightwalker. I can't fully remember it but Nightwalker asked Asterion for his help in the Eternal City and maybe once he fulfilled his deal Asterion backstabbed him. We need to look back at those chapters because my memory there is a bit foggy but the context there might provide more proof of Asterion's flaw

In the chapters where Sunny and Nightwalker first meet, there's no mention of a deal. Only the fact of betrayal, and therefore some kind of agreement. Nothing concrete. After their first meeting, the topic of Asterion wasn't brought up, if I remember correctly.

There is a mention of a qualitative improvement in his Dormant ability after becoming a Master, which may indicate the Aspect's evolution during the second Nightmare. Not very informative anyway

Backstabbing him as soon as they arrived means he either broke the deal, or fulfilled his part and no longer had need for nightwalker

If it's the former it means deals aren't his flaw

Lol, what if Astarion was autistic? Just imagine, this poor boy, incapable of understanding his own or others' emotions, lives in a crazy Dreamworld, surrounded by crazed fanatics. From his very birth, no one truly loved him, no one cared for him sincerely and selflessly, much less paid attention to his uniqueness. Abandoned and lost, he found his own way of communicating with others. It's a deal. You do x, I'll do y. Clear and understandable. No subtexts, no unnecessary emotions or sudden actions. Of course, over time, he matured, learned cognitive empathy, and became the cunning bastard we know him as. But the inner emptiness, the fixation on understanding others, and the old habit of making deals remained with him. They formed the basis of his Aspect and Flaw.
Forgotten God, this novel is simply a collection of autistics.

(This would also add more meaning to his comparison of himself to the Minotaur, and Nephi to Theseus, btw)

I realised that when I first thought this theory. However I think given the clues provided so far doesn't it make it seem like Asterion has that flaw and besides we never saw how that Flaw is used against Quentin.

If I want to make their flaws different, it would be like Quentin must accept that promise in order it for to be unbreakable whether it's with others or a personal promise.

With Asterion, I would say he cannot refuse the option of a deal or negotiation when presented in front of him

I initially thought that Mordret would rescue her from Asterion when the memory first appeared, but now the situation at the ebony tower seems absolutely hopeless for Cassie. I hope we get to that point soon cuz whatever contingency plans she didn't want to use are probably what lead her to the state she's in right now

Friends, do I understand correctly that Azarakx lived in the same era as Noctis and the other immortals - the chains of hope? Azarakx conquered worlds and was defeated by Solvaine. However, I seem to have missed the moment when he was nailed to a tree, so please remind me.

I don't think Solvaine was explicitly mentioned in that chapter, rather someone from the same group of warmaidens. A really strong ancestor of Solvaine perhaps? I feel like that'd make more sense, since she was transcendent at best. Her odds of beating Azarax seems close to zero imo.

If you're looking for sponsorship and financial backing the best method would be to become a spy for governments that need information from G3's country. The enemy of my enemy is a friend.

The funds of a country would be more than sufficient to purchase your ticket and accomodations.

Disclaimer though "Never get caught" a spy caught in foreign soil is denied all responsibility by the hiring county and you're on own out there with no nationality to protect you. It's you alone against a whole country.

Killing a spy is an honor and absolves any criminal liability for citizens that catch one.

I think it's one of the main reasons a lot of popular celebrities have a few foreign spy fan stalkers tailing them
