Chapter 2848: Desert Vanguard

A towering wall of white flame rose like a curtain, obscuring the depths of the desert. The shades in the first line of the battle formation braced as the shockwave of the titanic explosion slammed into them - weakened by the distance it had travelled, it failed to destroy them, only serving to slow them down.

A moment later, the deafening roar of the explosion washed over the Shadow Legion, as well, followed by a wave of unbearable heat and, finally, by a boiling cloud of white sand.

Glass rained from the sky, piercing the ground like shrapnel.

The marching shades endured the calamitous consequences of Changing Star's opening blow, rushing forward in an orderly manner. The Deathless in front of them were in disarray, momentarily weakened by the aftershock of the explosion.

Just before the leading shades clashed with the rearguard of the undead horde, Sunny saw another flash high in the sky above him.

There was one more radiant ray of white flame that swiped across the dunes far away, causing another earth-shattering conflagration. But he did not pay it much attention, focusing on his own surroundings.

The Deathless were thrown off balance by the explosion and preoccupied by their eternal battle. So, they suffered greatly when the Shadow Legion first descended upon them like a dark flood.

Saint was the first one to engage the enemy, her black sword falling to crush an undead soldier's neck. The ancient bone proved to be all but impervious to damage, though, and the blade of darkness only left a deep gash on it. Nevertheless, the dire force of the attack sent the skeleton flying into the distant flames.

A moment later, Saint twisted her torso and slammed her shield into a different enemy, putting her shoulder behind it. The black bones of the Deathless warrior splintered and crumbled, the broken remains falling to the ground and straining weakly to crawl. Taking a step forward, she assumed her true size, towering above the Deathless who had once been human like a beautiful statue. Crimson flames blazed the visor of the helmet, and her foot fell upon the struggling foe, crushing him into dust.

Slayer was not far behind, having unsheathed her blades instead of relying on her bow. She moved between the Deathless like a ghost, shattering the joints that connected their skeletal limbs and throwing them down to the ground. Sadly, her weapons proved as ineffective as Saint's sword.

Slayer was a sage of visiting death upon living things, after all, and those cursed by Shadow God were undying.

Sending a black skeleton staggering back with a graceful kick, she spun like a dancer and then leaped forward.

By the time Slayer landed on the ground again, she had already assumed the shape of an enormous black tiger. Baring her fangs, she lunged at the Deathless, shattering their bones with her ferocious jaws.

Surprisingly enough, it was Serpent who proved to be the most lethal of the three Shadows in this battle.

Having assumed the shape of the King of Swords, it advanced forward with measured steps. Serpent held one of the seven onyx swords in his hands, while the other six revolved around him like a rustling shield of slaying steel. With these seven blades, it easily kept the Deathless at bay, beheading them with powerful blows when they got too close.

But that was not what made Serpent so deadly... if the word could be used here, in a battle against the Deathless. Instead, it was the fact that every sword in a wide area around the serpentine Shadow trembled and moved according to its will.

Countless blades tore themselves from the hands of the Deathless warriors, spinning around to aim themselves at their former masters.

A whirlwind of steel raged in the heart of the undying horde, grinding the cursed warriors to dust like a bladed mill.

Sunny's most powerful shades entered the battle in the wake of the three Shadows. The immortals of the Eternal City, the bestial abominations of Godgrave, the prisoners of Ariel's game, the shadow of Daeron the Serpent King — all the Supreme shades, as well as the strongest among the Transcendent ones, slammed into the Deathless horde and cut a path through it. They were led by the fierce, furious, feral shade of the Wolf.

Sunny lingered for a moment, and then joined the fray as well.

When he descended upon the battlefield in person, all of his terrifying champions suddenly seemed weak and merciful in comparison.

Neglecting to manifest a weapon, Sunny chose to assume the shape of the Shadowspawn instead and went on a rampage among the Deathless. His towering body was encased in the fearsome carapace of the Jade Mantle, and he moved with an eerie, impossible kind of speed.

He stepped through the shadows as naturally as if he were walking, instantly appearing near the next enemy after breaking the bones of the first. Their old bones were tough and difficult to shatter, but the strength of the Supreme Titan was simply too titanic. Subjected to his fists and his claws, the Deathless crumbled as if they had been made from straw.

Of course, the ease with which Sunny broke the ancient undead was not founded purely in dire strength.

Instead, it was because of his Will.

Sunny willed the Deathless to be broken, and so, they broke.

The Shadow Legion slowly but surely advanced forward and reached the wall of immolating flames. The wall was much lower by then, seemingly on the verge of being extinguished. His shadows stepped into the dying flame and emerged on the other side, ready to continue the battle.

'This... is not that bad.'

Catching himself thinking that thought, Sunny grew even paler than his usual self.

'Damnation.'

No, really. Was he a fool?

‘Why... why! Why, you fool?! Why did you think that aloud?!

He knew that if anything could go wrong, it would inevitably go wrong. Sunny had not deluded himself into thinking that the Deathless could not present a serious threat to him and Nephis...

And now, he had invited their wrath upon himself.

Ok so silly question, I’m sure I’ll get hammered for it, but why fight your way through? Instead of trying to sneak/run through the melee as much as ya can anyway.
Are they trying to destroy a little section, move up, then the next night the deathless they just defeated will rise up from where fell? Or are these deathless immediately respawning and getting right back up?
Just curious. Sunny seems like he could fly, not literally, through the battle jumping from shadow to shadow to try and avoid damage. Nephis i dunno

Granted, Nephys can't move stealthily, but even so, there's no point in cutting through an immortal army. Nephys could simply run forward until attacked, and only then would Sunny deploy her legion and begin the battle. They could come up with something, like hiding the ship in the Sea of Souls and Nephys in the Shadow Realm, and then quietly crawl most of the way through the shadows. Maybe they were just testing their strength or something.

its a very good point but i think its mainly that would be boring for the story and also they are learning how to kill/incapacitate the weaker ones as most of these are probably corrupted-great but when they get closer to the tomb all will be cursed and they wont be able to just run past them and will have to kill them so they are using the weaker ones to learn how to do that so they dont get stomped by the stronger ones

I thought about this as well. But i think this battle is just a test run, because once they get closer to Ariels Tomb the monsters will get much stronger, so they might be forced to fight instead of rushing to the Tomb later on

It's not that silly a question, but I don't think they actually could "sneak through", there are countless dead soldiers, like way way way more than is reasonable. There won't be open plains, unoccupied terrain, trees,, cover, caves etc. It's a large desert. There's nowhere to hide at all.

And these soldiers are also insanely strong. Even if Sunny just shadow hopped with Nephis there are definitely soldiers who could attack shadows directly, detect their movements, or detect some other thing (emotions, reflections, heat, gaze) etc in the first place. Imagine the sheer titanic effort of will and essence it would require to drag neph (even willingly) into the shadows across any meaningful distance, It's just not possible I think.

anywhere the go they'll be surrounded, so they need to make space.

Valid question, its mostly for theatrics i believe, plus its been so so much time since we have seen Nephis and Sunny getting loose.

Plus even if Sunny and Nephis shadow step what about the chain breaker, i think sunny can cover it in his shadow but thats begs the question why bring the ship in the first place??

If Sunny had wrapped the nephi with his entire body, they could have sneaked up to the tomb through the shadowy passage? And it wouldn't have to be done all at once; maybe half a day of training to fight immortals, and the rest of the day on a forced march.

Sunny should have also unleashed either the Rat King or Abundance into this battle because they have huge AOE attacks. During the Death Game, he struggled with unleashing more than one sacred shade with one incarnation, so he could swap the Wolf Shade even though it's stronger. Although with all the Incarnations here, along with Spirit Weave and the effects of the Curse, he should be able to unleash one more sacred shade.

I Think Sunny said that maybe he could unleash 1 more sacred shade but it is not worth it as he would have to focus all his Will on keeping them summined. But with 1 sacred he can also fight by himself.

As a fellow reader "mischievous schemer" said, i have a simillar theory,

As he said that auro before closing the gate of void to free FG, coud be posessed by or become avatar of FG, which is not that absurd by this novels standard.

So it could be possible that Sunny already killed FG once as I think time and space should not be that strong for these true gods and we know FG is the strongest.

So even though young auro was still a mortal, he could be a carrier of FG like, FG could be sleeping dormant but at the same time conscious about auros surroundings.
And a divine titan could have powers surpassing the nightmare spell, so FG could be aware of sunny killing his vessel in one fake reality.
Like gods could have power to see beyond past, present and future and be sensitive to people watching them from past or future.

Imagine the aura of Sunny killing the phase 1 of the strongest and final miniboss/avatar of FG and FG being aware of all of it.

Even, getting a revelation that FG trying to manipulate the events so that sunny will free him early and before time. Things like which nightmare sunny to send or what memory sunny should get. After all, NM spell was created by Weaver, and he is weavers father/OG body. Weaver himself was 1/7th of FG.

Yeah like you said. Time and space doesn't work normally for them. Like the First Nightmare, Shadow god sends his blessing to Sunny beyond the grave. How he done this while he is dead? Did he send his blessing thousands of years before hand? It goes to show at someone of his level, nothing is too far-fetched in what they could perceive. All the gods know that Sunny has given himself as an offering to them.

Like Shadow, FG could have sensed that Auro was killed by Sunny even though he wasn't his avatar at the time and was also in the Nightmare. This could be the REAL reason why he got the Glorious Appraisal.

It also makes me think about what the spell said. "Your Treachery Knows No Bounds" as even the FG has been impacted by Sunny's treacherous nature

It's not a fact that the Old Shadow God did it; perhaps the Shadow God did it as part of the Nightmare Spell. Divine bloodlines are distributed by the Spell, which can't materialize them out of thin air; it preserves their cores, the remains of the Nightmare after they've been consumed.

Auro freed FG because he was the Fated. His entire life was shrouded in fate. A fate that belongs to the Weaver's domain, and therefore to FG's domain.
Just like Sunny's life. FG doesn't even need avatars to understand that one of his pawns killed another; it's entirely possible that it happened of his own free will.
This could also be why the Spell highlights Sunny's treachery so much.

There's a catch: Sunny killed Auro when he was still a slave, and he also said back then that he couldn't die before he achieves his goal (revenge on the gods). Therefore, I believe that the events during Sunny's trial took place at the beginning of the Great God-Daemon War, and Auro hadn't managed to open the gate by then. And It's hard to believe that the FG avatar could be killed with such a simple trick.

They told this like 5 chapters ago this is a test to see what works and what doesn't because the creatures closer to the middle supreme and maybe even up cannot be avoided if they try nephis said they would be destroyed. so they're fighting the weaker ones to understand how to fight against the ones that cant be avoided. they're distracted now but when a 3rd factor comes into play i forgot why but its said they might ban together to attack the intruder. even without it, these things can destroy stars by clashing even after shocks from their fight could cause dmg to sunny and nephis.

I also want to see more divine aspect wielders. Perhaps we might see one that fell to corruption and Sunny has to face off against them. Perhaps they will be the next big bad after Asterion. A corrupted divine aspect wielder of maybe the cursed or unholy rank. In other novels, you would also see all sorts of experiments of people changing the rank of their aspect to be divine or implant more soul cores within them like Reverend Insanity does it.

I also have a far-fetched belief that Auro of the 9 was a divine aspect wielder also

You know what my most far-fetched theory is. That Auro opened the gates of the void and unleashed the FG. However before the gate closed again by the nightmare spell, the FG saw he was about to fall into his slumber and he made Auro his avatar who's also still slumbering. Because it would be such a twist that technically Sunny has actually met the FG but his avatar all the way in the past in his 1NM which will be a full circle moment. And he escaped from him and offered himself as a sacrifice on the altar for all the gods. That would be craazzy, I am just letting my imagination run wild
