Chapter 2841: Divine Chariot

The Chain Breaker flew through the boundless black abyss of the sky above the Forgotten Shore, surrounded by silence. There were no stars and no moon above them, and the ground was shrouded in utter darkness. It felt as if they were floating through a lightless, endless void.

The light of the lanterns hanging from the masts of the Chain Breaker seemed feeble and weak in the face of this vast, lightless expanse.

Sunny could see the terrain far below the flying ship perfectly well, of course. However, Nephis had been rendered blind. She pulled the oars gently, slowing down the ship, and sighed.

"I'd close my eyes if I were you."

Sunny followed her advice and closed his eyes, then covered them with a hand. Nephis inhaled deeply, then channelled her essence and invoked the True Name of Light in a simple, but powerful Verse.

In the next moment, the hull of the Chain Breaker ignited with a blinding white radiance — so blinding, in fact, that Sunny felt a great change in the shadows above, below, and around them. The shadows fled away from the light like an oceanic tide, and just from the scale of that sudden migration, he could tell that an area spanning hundreds of kilometres across was now illuminated.

The desolate, barren terrain of the Forgotten Shore was instantly bathed in light. It was as if a new sun had risen above it after long years of cold darkness — that sun was the Chain Breaker, which flew across the sky like a divine chariot.

Sunny carefully opened his eyes, giving them time to adjust to the sudden daylight. Nephis was still steering the Chain Breaker, looking ahead impassively.

She remained silent for a few moments, then said:

“It seems this is my limit. If I were Sacred... I would have probably been able to illuminate the entirety of the Forgotten Shore."

Looking at him, she smiled faintly, a hint of a strange bittersweet emotion in her eyes.

“Then, I'd really be able to replace a sun."

Just as she said that, the ruins of the Crimson Spire appeared on the horizon. Nephis and Sunny did not say anything to each other, but there was a tacit understanding between them. She sent the Chain Breaker into a descent, and when it reached the ground, Sunny summoned a cradle made out of shadows to support its weight.

Soon enough, they were standing on the rubble of the great tower that had once supported the weight of the sun. Some distance away, the statue of the Builder was kneeling in the dust, holding its head. Behind them, hidden in the towering mountain of shattered black stone, the Dark Sea was waiting silently beneath the seal. Nephis looked around, her face betraying no emotion.

She did not seem interested in the Dark Sea and its seal, and while the massive figure of the kneeling Builder held her attention for a while, eventually, she simply walked past it and crossed the bridge that led to the sea of dust beyond.

There, two hills stood side by side.

One was a barrow built from black stone — from the shattered pieces of the Crimson Spire.

The other was an eerie mountain of monstrous bones, tall enough to dwarf the barrow.

They were the grave of the Sleepers who had fought and lost their lives on this battlefield and the bones of the Nightmare Creatures they had slain.

Nephis approached the barrow and stood beneath it, looking up.

Her eyes traveled to the words carved into the black stone...

[Here lie those

Who extinguished the sun

Dreamers of the Dark City

Sleep well

Your nightmare is over.]

Nephis remained motionless for a long while.

Eventually, she asked:

“Who buried them?"

Sunny shifted slightly.

"I did."

She lowered her head and let out an almost inaudible sigh.

"Thank you."

Her words fell heavy into the ashen silence. After some time, Nephis turned back and looked at the ruins of the Crimson Spire.

"People call me a hero, you know. For leading the Sleepers of the Dark City back to the waking world. But actually, there was nothing heroic about it."

She paused for a moment.

"I merely used them to achieve my goals. I needed an army to reach the Gateway, and for that, I needed to wrestle authority out of Gunlaug's hands. So, I simply made myself into the opposite of Gunlaugh. I didn't really know much about people back then... but becoming the opposite of the man who oppressed them was simple enough."

Nephis smiled bitterly.

"Of course, I sincerely believed that laying siege to the Crimson Spire was the best choice for all of them — the only choice. But, still. I did it for myself. I did it to pursue my goals."

Sunny studied her silently for a few moments, then asked:

“Would you have done anything differently if you had a choice?"

Nephis looked at him in surprise.

"Done anything differently? Of course. I wouldn't have failed.”

Sunny raised an eyebrow, then gestured to the ruins of the Crimson Spire.

"It doesn't seem like you failed, though. If anything, it looks like you succeeded completely."

Nephis laughed quietly.

"If I succeeded, there would have been far more survivors. Most of all, I wouldn't have ended up stuck in the Dream Realm for two years."

She looked at the ruins of the Crimson Spire and sighed.

“Granted, I don't quite remember what transpired there. The battle against the Crimson Terror must have been too taxing. I figured out the mechanics of the Spire too late, I think. Caster was already dead by then, so there was no one to make the conduit instead of me. Oh... Caster was a Legacy whom the Sovereigns had sent to kill me. He died in the Spire."

Sunny smiled and looked away.

"Still... you were victorious in the end, weren't you?"

Nephis studied the ruins of the Crimson Spire once more.

Eventually, she said:

“Victorious? Oh... no, not at all. I only ever tasted defeat for the longest time."

Did this chapter make any of you feel a sense of sadness and nostalgia? I started reading this years ago and it feels weird being much older and looking back at your life. I am a college student well on my way to graduating soon and I started this in high school. Nephis and Sunny were just children in the Forgotten Shores and now they are grown adults now. I feel like this chapter meant a lot to G3. I can feel it in his words.

Nephis' limitations are becoming increasingly clear, but her determination is inspiring. It's interesting to see the difference between her current power and what she could achieve as a Sacred.

Hey guys few days ago I came up with a crazy thought u may have read it, here's is a little modified version of that thought which makes it less crazy, more of a actual theory.
I still think that cassie will obtain Weaver's eye which VTB dropped when it saw unknown frozen in the Weaver's eye. We don't know the location where it fell and don't know if it still present but weaver saying epigone to Cassie makes me think that one day she'll get a part of weaver i.e Weaver's eye just like how sunny got all the Weaves.
G3 making Asterion to attack cassie and take her eye makes it even more of a possibility.
What are your opinion's on this

Ngl, I kinda like the way u are going. I was thinking, if Cassie is 2nd hand epigone, then she already has a lot of knowledge bout weaver due to the memories she is sorting through to fight the corruption, and i don't think she can handle Void being level corruption yet as a supreme. Maybe when she becomes Sacred, she will be able to put weaver's eye in place of her gone eye

At every node of Ascension, the body is remade, so shouldn't the eye regenerate after she achieves Supremacy?

It's interesting to think about. But you also got to address the elephant in the room with that scenario. VTB, a Cursed Terror went mad at one glance, even if Cassie becomes Sacred she still won't resist the corruption. I mean Sunny in a sense can see more of the past than her through the mask and being the heir of fate. He could see fate in its entirety more so than her. So it would be cool to see in the future both of them being able to see the strings of fate

Not now but in future, when Cassie becomes sacred and she has affinity to memories that way she can limit the corruption rate

Does Sunny have the power now without true name to become any of the shadows he’s killed, even the most powerful ones, and use their abilities? I know the snake kinda has that. But does Sunny or because he has no true name now he can’t do anything like that now because he’d “lose himself”. Hope that’s the case. Once he begs his true name he can just become literally anything. Because him having to turn into just a bigger version of himself is lame af. And it’s not really a legit transcended form like everyone else has. Will be just be able to turn into a wave of showdowns and become anything.
Would be wild if he could turn into condemnation and use his powers but I dunno if that’s even a possibility. I know it’s not with condemnation I just mean if he gets a shadow as power as that. Like VTB.

he can’t just become a Cursed One as a Supreme. And yeah he needs his True Name to anchor himself. He can just use that charm he made but there’s no point

What if Sunny is given a choice. Nephis and his friends and sister will remember him before the Bird did its thing. Or they will only remember him for what he’s done after. If he chooses the former they won’t remember all he’s done the past few years. Nephis won’t remember all the romantic stiff. Cassie will still think he hates her.

What would be choose if he had to?

If they don't know blank history, they can't trust each other, and sunny from before also did go on romantic date with neph in great river, so nothing changes.

Haha I didn’t know I had a fan. Holy shit. I have said a few times I skimmed damn near all the mirror shit, half the Ariel game shit (but am actually going back through now) , and the middle of the unkillable people turn blob monster shit. So yeah I guess you can say I’ve skimmed the entire damn near 3000 chapters lol.
You’re pissy because there are arcs I’m not to big a fan of so I skipped them? Or is it because I think Rain kinda sucks lol.
I don’t have any theories. It’s a f#cking question and honestly I think it’s an interesting thought experiment. Maybe take the stick out of your ass and you’d comprehend that.
Now with all due respect go f#ck yourself.

Oh yeah the whole reason she stayed in the Dream Realm for 2 years was because of Sunny. That would have had a huge impact on her memory and for all these years she would have never known why she couldn't make it out of the Forgotten Shore the first time

True sunny was the first reason she couldn't leave because she decided to command sunny to leave first rather than risking both their lives in vain. But I think we're forgetting something there.

She also said sunny was the only reason she managed to stay alive and sane the whole 2 years she was stuck. Didn't she say she kept looking at her runes and Sunny's progress outside as a window and inspiration to keep working on a way out.

It was also only Sunny who was able to calm down her rampaging when she first returned, not Cassie or anyone else.
