Chapter 2808: Irreconcilable Differences

Sunny studied Mordret in silence.

By now, it was clear that words were not going to solve anything. The King of Nothing was so wary of the Dreamspawn that he had given up on the Human Domain. That meant that nothing Sunny could say would move him — because as far as Mordret was concerned, Sunny and Nephis were already defeated.

They were already as good as dead.

Why would he be moved by the words of a corpse?

'Damn him.'

So, what did it mean for the Human Domain?

Sunny sighed.

It meant that their time, which had already been woefully short, had run out completely.

Asterion was slowly turning humanity against them. Now that entire cities were falling under his influence, the conflict between the loyalists and the turncoats was going to escalate until it reached the inevitable conclusion — the complete defeat of the Longing Domain.

Nephis was going to lose even more of her power.

At the same time, a new threat would begin spreading from the north. Mordret was on the warpath, preparing to completely consume the Hunger Domain... or die trying. He had already taken the Glass Hell. That single conquest was going to increase his power tremendously, since he would not be forced to starve in the Hollow Mountains anymore. Instead, he was going to invade the Hive and swipe it clean, eradicating every Nightmare Creature hiding in the crystal depths and making them his vessels.

It was going to take some time, and it was going to take some effort. But eventually, the King of Nothing would spill out of the Glass Hell like a tide, washing over the neighboring regions first, and the rest of the Dream Realm later.

He would not be able to cross the Bone Sea in the south, and Godgrave was mostly barren. However, Mordret controlled his own miniature realm — the Mirror Realm — and could fashion it into a bridge between any two reflections. So, his armies could march directly from Red Hill to any of the nearby Citadels.

Which Citadels were the closest, then?

Sunny's expression darkened.

The Sanctuary Noctis in the east. The Citadel above the Lake of Tears to the west...

And beyond it, Ravenheart.

Mordret was almost impossible to kill, but he risked his life every time he challenged someone to a soul duel. The Glass Hell offered him a unique advantage, so he had spent months studying Red Hill and all of its inhabitants in detail — that was one of the reasons he had been able to slither into their souls and destroy them all in the span of one night.

A far more important reason, however, was that nobody had anticipated his attack. Now that he had revealed himself, conquering another city in the same manner would entail a much higher degree of risk... because both Sunny and Asterion could put countermeasures in place.

Sunny could hide agents of the Shadow Clan among the population of neighboring cities. All members of his clan bore the Mark of Shadows, which meant that he could enter their Soul Seas freely. Therefore, challenging them to a soul duel meant challenging Sunny himself, which was one thing Mordret would never do.

Asterion had his own methods, no doubt.

As for Nephis... Sunny was not even sure that Mordret could invade the souls of those augmented by her flames, or at least do so unscathed.

In any case, Mordret was not going to attack other Citadels of the Human Domain in the same manner. That did not mean that they were safe, though — far from it. By now, he could simply overwhelm their defences through sheer military might, and his power would only increase after he absorbed the great swarms of Nightmare Creatures dwelling in the Hive.

It would grow further with every city he conquered.

Sunny was concerned for the Sanctuary of Noctis and the White Feather clan, of course. The Chain Isles were also a strategically important location, since they were a gateway to the Black Mountains and the heartland of the Dream Realm beyond. Needless to say, he was worried about Ravenheart too. It was one of the two most populous cities in the Dream Realm, after all, as well as where Kai lived.

But actually, it was the former Citadel of Clan Sorrow at the edge of the Moonriver Plains that was most vital. That was because the Great Waterfall, Weeping Goddess, created the Lake of Tears there — and that lake gave birth to the River of Tears, which connected all human settlements in the West together.

If Mordret somehow captured the Lake of Tears, his invasion of the Human Domain could very well become unstoppable. It will definitely become far more rapid, at the very least.

And who could stop Mordret?

It was unclear whether Sunny or Nephis could defeat him cleanly in a one-on-one clash... even if Sunny would gladly give it a go. What was almost guaranteed, though, was that they would most likely crush him if they fought together.

However, that would only serve to weaken both sides, making Asterion the only winner.

More importantly...

Sunny and Nephis had to depart soon. In fact, now that Mordret had begun his invasion of the Human Domain, they had to leave as soon as possible.

Because the swiftest and most effective way of stopping the King of Nothing — and preventing him from taking countless lives — was to eliminate the cause of his genocidal crusade. To eliminate Asterion as a threat.

And they could only defeat Asterion by going away.

That was the only one of Cassie's visions Sunny could not afford to doubt.

‘Lam wasting time here:

Sunny looked at Mordret with a somber expression, questioning his past choices. Would the people of Red Hill have been alive if he had simply killed the other fragment of the King of Nothing in Mirage City? Regardless, even if he could not kill him now, he could at least slow him down a little.

“This body of yours."

Mordret looked down at the mighty body of Saint Dar and smiled.

“Not exactly my style, is it? Ah, but it suits me well. I thought that his Aspect would be redundant, considering the depth of my own perception, but it is actually quite different from my own abilities. Very useful." Sunny sighed.

“You can see everything, right? So no adversary can sneak up on you unnoticed." Mordret nodded.

“Well, that's the idea, yes."

But in the next moment, he swayed and let out a pained groan, a river of blood escaping from his mouth.

That was because a black arrow had pierced his throat.

Walking closer, Sunny looked down at the collapsing figure of Saint Dar and said in a low tone:

“Meet Slayer. You wouldn't believe the kind of beings she hunted down in the past... so, don't feel too bad.”

As those words escaped his mouth, a flood of scurrying black rats rose from his shadow, flowing toward the myriad of vessels below.

His reflection sighed.

“Ah. That is quite unfortunate. I liked that body a lot... are we really doing it, then? Are we fighting?"

Sunny smiled darkly.

“I'll fight you some other day. Today, I'll just give you a farewell gift and leave."

He spared his reflection a cold glance, grimaced, and dissolved into the shadows.

I like how Mordret worded it similar to Bartholomew and Reindhardt from attack on titan, 'are we doing it? Are we doing it right now?'.

I think it's now the time mordret should be killed, when he started he was revenge driven I really liked that trait of his, but now it seems he just became a mad butcher who will kill anything that comes in his way directly or indirectly, if sunny and nephis becomes weak he would gladly kill them...

Idk I started to feel disgusted by his character now all those sensless butchering of house of night now red kill, now in present rain is also in his domain...

Further on, one of the themes of the novel will be the deprivation of humanity. Sunny and Nef will try to preserve it, but Mordret... oohoho
I really, really want to see him transform into something else. Not into a monster, not into a madman, but into a god with his own unusual morals and unique view of the world. All I can do is hope (and pray) that this fool will start developing rather than remaining a background antihero.

Its more and more likely that Lady Nephis and Lord Sunless are moving toward Tomb of Ariel, but that simply means Lord Asterion and Mordret-sama are free to take up people in their domains,

That also means Lady Nephis and Lord Sunless are prepared to give up on the humanity on this timeline. I always wondered what happens if someone entered the real Tomb of Ariel in future (lets call it point A) and then exit it from somewhere in the past (lets call it point B).
I am personally not a big fan of going back in time to fix things (too convenient a plot hole) but hey if its gets our Lord Sunless Fate back and cool new Shadow bird I am in the for the ride.

They still wont be able to defeat our benevolent Lord Asterion though.

That would be an interesting interaction actually. I don't think it would kill him though. Actually, I think it would be worse. He would probably turn into an instinct driven abomination that would just attack and consume everyone. He said himself that he's no different from a nightmare creature

After sharing my theory about the role of the Nightmare Spell and how it elevates people, transforming them from ordinary beings into awakened beings, masters, saints, etc., let's consider how Weaver constructed the Nightmare Spell. First, we have the following text from Chapter 2410:
"In front of the torn figure, at the heart of the Shadow Realm, was something so distressing, unknowable, and inconceivable that simply beholding it shattered Sunny's mind into a thousand fragments, making him blind and deaf, unable to think.

    And yet, he still saw.

Weaver dragged their tattered body forward as the daemons made their desperate last stand against the gods around them. A trail of ichor was left on the obsidian dust behind the Demon of Fate, glowing with a gorgeous golden glow in the cold darkness.

"Fools." "All of them, such fools."

A laughter resounded from beneath the cracked mask as Weaver finally reached their destination - the very heart of the Shadow Realm, and the unspeakable horror that was hidden there. The Void Gate.

The Void Gate stood wide open, now.

Sunny was mercifully blind, so he could not see what Weaver saw when they gazed beyond the Gate.

The Demon of Fate laughed again.

    "Now. One final trick."

But before the cunning daemon could do anything, a bone blade pierced their back, tore through their flesh, and severed their shadow before exiting in a fountain of ichor from their chest.

    Weaver staggered and glanced back.

There, a woman in bloodied armor was holding the hilt of a bone dagger, life rapidly draining from her cold, dark eyes. Her face was hidden behind a tattered, torn veil, but the daemon still recognized her.

    "You."

The two of them fell down at the same time. Golden ichor and crimson blood mixed before being swallowed by the obsidian dust.

The woman's lips twisted into a vicious smile behind the torn veil. She twisted the dagger with a faltering hand, then it grew still, still smiling. Her eyes dimmed, turning hollow and glassy.

She was dead. The Demon of Fate was not going to survive much longer, either.

A deep sigh resounded from behind the mask.

Looking at the dead woman, Weaver drew one last, arduous breath.

    ".You are just in time."

The last thing Sunny saw started led and confused him, because it did not make much sense at all. He found himself in an endless black void illuminated by a myriad of stars. Some of the stars were small and dim, while some were great and radiant. Some were connected by strings of silver light, while most were isolated from each other by the vast expanse of empty darkness.

    By then, something changed.

Seven radiant stars suddenly blazed in the void, and as strings of silver light extended from them to countless others, there was suddenly a pattern to them all. Anchored in the seven stars, the tapestry of silver light expanded, consuming more and more of the smaller stars.

And then, it extended its tendrils to the great stars that burned as brightly as the seven that had served as the catalyst to the explosion of silver strings. There were eleven constellations of them, and by the By the time the tendrils of silver light reached them, it was already too late to react.

By then, the tapestry had already become too vast, having consumed perhaps myriad smaller stars—all of them, possibly—and so the constellations could not resist. They still tried, naturally.

In the end, the tendrils of silver strings enveloped and consumed them, absorbing them into the tapestry of light.

Casting a Spell upon the Void.

    "

This text mentions 7 stars and 11 constellations... At first, I thought the 7 stars were demons... but that doesn't explain the 11 constellations or why they were resisting... Also, there aren't 7 demons; there are only 6 because the demon of forgetfulness is already dead... At this point, I had a moment of realization, far removed from the 7 gods and 7 demons?" What else is famously associated with the number 7? ...Yes, it's the parts of the Weaver Chain...so I assumed that the 7 stars are parts of the Weaver Chain (meaning the Weaver itself). And so we find 6 gods and 5 demons, making 11 in total, which is literally the number of constellations...Now let's move on to another part of the story. We all remember Cassia's prediction at the beginning of the story, right? About the confrontation between Sunny and Nevis in chapter 44:
"Cassia sighed and tentatively nodded. After a long pause, she finally found the courage to speak:

"At first, I saw a… a boundless darkness locked behind seven seals. Something vast was churning in the darkness. I felt like if I directly saw it, I would lose my mind. As I watched, terrified, the seals broke one after another, until only one remained. And then that seal broke, too."

    She trembled a little.

"After that… I don't know." It was as though my mind shattered into a thousand shards, each shard reflecting its own image. Most of them were dark and scary. Some I have already forgotten. “The other…”

    Cassie fell silent, remembering.

"I saw the human castle again. Only this time, it was at night. There was a lonely star burning in the black skies, and under its light, the castle was suddenly consumed by fire, with rivers of blood flowing down its halls. I saw a corpse in a golden armor sitting on a throne; a woman with a bronze spear drowing in a tide of monsters; an archer trying to pierce the falling sky with his arrows."

Finally, she looked up, her face full of horror.

"At the end, I saw a colossal, terrifying crimson spire. At its base, seven severed heads were guarding seven locks. And at the top, a… a dying angel was being consumed by hungry shadows. When I saw the angel bleed, I suddenly felt as though… as though something so precious that it could not be described with words was taken from me."

    Her voice became quieter.

“Then, I felt so much sorrow, pain and rage that what little remained of my sanity seemed to disappear. That was when I woke up… I think.”

Nephis and Sunny remained silent for a while, trying to make sense of what Cassie had told them. Even if Nephis had an idea, she didn't show it. Sunny, however, was totally lost. He couldn't even begin to decipher the hidden meaning behind the vision... if it even was one.

Previously, Cassia's vision about the castle was pretty much straightforward. It showed her a human fortress and even the direction in which it was situated. This time, however, her dream was disjointed, full of weird symbolism and vague, uncertain images, much more like a charlatan's prophecy than a vision gained through an Aspect Ability.

    Finally, he sighed.”

In this prophecy, we thought it was only about the beginning of the story, but I don't think so... Look at the sequence of the prophecy: the locks breaking... the presence of something terrifying... her mind shattering into pieces, most of them sad... and one of the pieces was the one that revolved around the Crimson Tower, as shown in the following passage:
It was as though my mind shattered into a thousand shards, each shard reflecting its own image. Most of them were dark and scary. Some I have already forgotten. The other....

    Cassie fell silent, remembering.

"I saw the human castle again."

This means that the second part of the prophecy is only about the beginning of the story, while the first part, about the locks breaking and the pieces of her mind, is for the events that will unfold in the novel. Now look at Cassie's description of her mind after seeing what was behind the locks:
"After that… I don't know. It was as though my mind shattered into a thousand shards."

Now, consider where I found another description similar to Cassie's situation. It's here in chapter 2410 when Sunny looked at the Void Gate:
"At the heart of the Shadow Realm, was something so distressing, unknowable, and inconceivable that simply beholding it shattered Sunny's mind into a thousand fragments."
So, I'm 99% certain that the first part of the prophecy about breaking the locks and what's behind it refers to the lock on the Void Gate breaking. Now, I'll go to my third belief, which is that the locks are the seven parts of the Weaver ratio. Because there aren't seven realms, there are only six, so they can't be the locks. The same goes for the number of gods. Also, do you know what Cassie's current state is? Her mind is shattered into a thousand fragments, which is the state Sunny was in after looking at the Void Gate, and the same thing in Cassie's prophecy. Also, Cassie can currently use her willpower; this is impossible for a saint. And I can't... I'm wondering what other scenario could have caused her mind to shatter like this. Also, we don't know if the current timeline of the story is after or during the battle with Asteron. It's possible her mind was destroyed after several events following the battle with Asteron, but we simply haven't reached those flashbacks yet. Anyway, my current theory about Cassie's situation is that she had a direct look at the Void Gate, either during her confrontation with Asteron or after the confrontation when Sunny takes the final piece of the Weaver lineage. Perhaps the Void Gate opens, as I mentioned earlier that the locks that close it are the pieces of the lineage. This theory explains why, at the beginning of the flashbacks, we saw many flashbacks about the Weaver and the Sun God realm, and there were still strange flashbacks that we couldn't logically explain. Cassie didn't know about these events, and as a saint, there must have been many events before her mind shattered into fragments for her to know all this information.

Thank you for listening to all of this... In the end, it remains just a theory inspired by a lot of speculation and still has some flaws... Please give me your opinions.

Yes, it is... But currently, I just don't know what happens when Sunny gathers all of Weaver's lineages... will he open the Void Gate? And there's also the possibility that he'll gain some control over the Nightmare Spell... because it was built from Weaver's lineages... I honestly don't know.

      1. hohoho you're saying that my Goatsie went all the way through the Shadow Realm and witnessed the fall of the world firsthand? hell yeah (yes you are)
      2. Something interesting about Oblivion. She was one of the six demons who went to war, according to Cas' visions at the beginning of the volume. So there should be 12 constellations, unless someone got lost along the way. It's possible that one of the gods or demons died so badly that they didn't even leave behind this "constellation," whatever it is. (It would be funny if Weaver forgot to include his sister in the spell.) But I can't remember anything specific about that war.

What a power move from Sunny at the end here kek

I need to know why Sunny and Neph leaving to fighting something far away is the one chance they have at wining this war. People realy need to re think this whole " Cassie will kill Asterion " thing since is confirmed that Sunny and Neph are detrimental to wining this war. This is without adding the fact that have been making it very clear – for a while now and in this Sunny pov – that they want to seal Asterion away rather than killing him.
