Chapter 2786: Will of a Tyrant

Hidden in the shadows beyond the hall, Sunny studied the reactions of the people gathered inside. He was concerned that they would be rattled by Asterion's question, but his worries turned out to be unfounded.

If anything, the champions of the Human Domain seemed confused. Some of them were even offended, looking at the Dreamspawn with dark expressions... the rest — those who had known him and suffered at his hands in the past — regarded him with cold hostility.

Nightwalker was simply staring at the man who had condemned him to the endless torment of the Eternal City silently, a murderous kind of calmness churning in his bright silver eyes.

...But, nonetheless, the question had been asked. And even if the people gathered in the Immortal Flame manor disagreed with its implication, the seed of doubt had already been planted into their minds.

How had Changing Star come to rule the world?

She had inherited the heroic mantle of her storied family, true. She earned fame and renown with astonishing feats of her own, as well. Before the war, she was the only one who dared to voice her opposition to the militant stance of the Sovereigns. During the war, she once again defied them by changing the course of the battle at Godheart and sparing countless soldiers from gruesome deaths.

And finally, she rose in rebellion against the Sovereigns and vanquished them by rising to the throne Supremacy herself, thus ending the war.

In the years since, she pushed humanity forward and guided it faithfully toward salvation, her fiery blade and her healing flames saving countless lives. Her reputation was stellar, and the story of her brilliant life was awe-inspiring.

She was like a living goddess, igniting the hearts of mankind with hope and desire to live, struggle, and strive.

But...

There was also no denying the fact that, in large part, she had become the ruler of humanity simply by virtue of being the only one left standing at the end of the war. There were no Supremes left to claim the throne, except for Changing Star... she had killed them all.

Or rather, there had not been.

There was the King of Nothing now. There was the Dreamspawn, as well.

So wouldn't it only be reasonable to ask if one of them was more suited for the crown? Sunny could feel that, even if most champions of the Human Domain found the notion preposterous and distasteful, some did look at Nephis as if seeing her in a new light.

‘Damn it.'

He studied them with a dark expression, wondering how she would react. Asterion seemed to be targeting her credibility, but what he was truly after was harming her image... harming that idea of Changing Star that existed in the minds of her subjects. So, if her answer was overly defensive or too aggressive, too callous or not firm enough — anything but flawless — he would succeed in dealing her a blow.

And Sunny could easily imagine Neph giving a heated answer from beneath her usual mask of calm poise, thus helping Asterion achieve just that. After all, she could be quite arrogant at times. She cared little about weakness, expecting everyone to be as strong and wilful as she was — or rather, caring only for those who aspired to be. And indeed, Nephis regarded Asterion with a cold expression for a while, doing her best to hide her smoldering wrath.

Then, however, she did something that Sunny did not expect.

Instead of answering the Dreamspawn, she turned her head slightly and looked at someone sitting on the western side of the vast round table.

“Saint Nightingale. Would you be so kind?"

Kai, who had been there listening somberly, did not respond for a few moments.

Then, he smiled slowly.

"Naturally."

He regarded the champions of the Human Domain and said in a calm, clear voice:

“Every second word that man uttered was a lie. He's about as trustworthy as Nightmare Creature... well, now that I think about it, most Nightmare Creatures are not very deceitful. So my comparison does them a disservice."

A wave of subdued whispers spread among the gathered guests. Nightwalker, meanwhile, did not hold himself back and scoffed loudly.

Sunny could not help but smile.

‘Huh...’

If there was one person whose reputation was even more stellar than Changing Star's, it was Nightingale — Saint Kai, the Dragonslayer. There was literally no one who had anything bad to say about the man, despite the fact that he had conquered Ravenheart and ensured the fall of the Great Clan Song. That was because, amazingly enough, he had managed to achieve that breathtaking feat without spilling a single drop of blood.

Not only was he universally admired and beloved, but he also enjoyed the immense trust of both his peers and the general population. He did not make a secret out of his Flaw, after all, so everyone knew that Nightingale could tell lies from the truth. So, by calling upon him, Nephis both drew everyone's attention away from Asterion's question and dealt a grievous wound to his credibility — with a single sentence, no less. Instead of searching for a way to deflect the attack, she simply ignored it completely and delivered one of her own.

It was honestly beautifully done.

Sunny felt proud.

In the great hall, the wary and confused looks aimed at Asterion were quickly turning hostile. Subjected to that hostility... He laughed.

"Oh, my. It seems that I've been caught red-handed. How embarrassing... well then, fine. I'll admit that I wasn't entirely forthcoming."

Looking around the hall with a humorous smile, he shrugged.

"I can see how you would not trust anything I say henceforth... which would be troublesome, to be entirely honest. How about this, then? From now on, I solemnly swear to speak the truth, only the truth, and nothing but the truth. Esteemed Saint Nightingale can be my witness."

He looked at Kai, as if challenging him to claim that this promise was untrue, as well. Kai frowned, but remained silent.

Hidden in the shadows, Sunny frowned. He did not miss that Asterion replaced "the whole truth" with “only the truth”... which was a subtle, but important distinction. As someone who often spoke in half-truths and lied by omission, Sunny knew better than most how important it was.

Asterion's smile, meanwhile, widened for a moment before becoming dim. He sighed. “There are so many distinguished warriors and true leaders in this room. The great pillars of the First and Second Generations, those who built the world we live in with their own blood, sweat, and tears. Seasoned veterans of the Nightmare Spell who carry the immense weight of their vast experience with dignity and poise. How is it, then, that an inexperienced girl from the Third Generation is allowed to decide the fate of humanity unilaterally, without heeding anyone's wisdom or advice?"

He shook his head with a hint of dejection.

"The answer, of course, is simple. It is because she is Supreme, and you are not. She rules simply because she is stronger — because no one can oppose her will. However, a person whose authority is founded only in strength is not a ruler."

Asterion frowned, then said in a grave tone:

"Such person... is nothing but a tyrant.’

As his words echoed in the vast hall, he looked around and asked:

"You seem to regard Changing Star as some kind of savior, but have you all forgotten that her True Name has a different meaning as well? The Ruinous Star, the Star of Misfortune..."

As his eyes hardened, Asterion gazed directly at Nephis.

"...The Star of Ruin.’

From what i understand, government is mostly utilitarian at this point, and everyone is mostly doing either the most critically important thing, or whatever they want. And elected goverment seem to rely excessively on Jet, because there is no one else wanted to work for the government.
But if I have to guess, he is leading towards wanting more challengers to become sovereigns, so he could eat them. Ironically its what protagonists wanted and worked towards too, since Neph is irreplaceable and she has more important things to do.

Guys, after reading other comment, u got a question.

Who is more dangerous, Asteron's name or Sunny's existance?

I mean, we are compairing the code word to spread the domain of a supreme who wants to eat humanity to the person carrying a daemons lineage, connecting him to forgotten god, who should remain forgotten for the good of all worlds and just revealing the existance of sunny greatly risks for him to awoke early.

Only worshipping Sunny is dangerous, even minor worship. And he cultivated his idiotic and cringe edgelord image for a while now. "I am the lord of shadows and death, and this is my favorite chair. Please visit my coffee shop, we have a sale" also it might be impossible to tell about sunny because of the erased fate thing. I guess asterion could force people to worship Sunny, but its pointless, and why bother with Sunny when he could start worship of forgotten god instead.
And for Neph reputation or whatever, they can always come clean. "Its existentian that you forget about him, also he is my boyfriend and he works as secret police." Quite a bunch of people know about him anyway. They can even portray this as a faked rumors. "You want me to believe that lonely darkness guy had a coffee shop in bastion, and he is actually lady Neph lover, and he lives in realm of death?"

Asterion is clearly in a VERY BAD Situation, why? because of the holy powers of yes or no and Kai in general ... Nephis can win with the following sentence : " Do you wish to brainwash and consume all of humanity to become sacred ? , please answer by yes or no" . kai will do the rest.

the only advantage asterion has is creating sentences that can be ambiguous for ex. " i care for mankind" kai would probably sense no lies since he cares for them.... as good livestock XD.

if premade sentences are made which both supremes are needed to say which live no ambiguity then my boy is cooked (ex of non ambiguous sentence "i wish to kill and absorb all mankind".)
even if sunny is brought he can simply say : " i lied and betrayed to protect humanity, i genuinely care about and wish to protect them" : ALSO UNO REVERSE CARD "ASTERION WENT TO US AND HAD A DISCUSSION IN WHICH EXPLICITLY CONFIRMED HE CONSIDERED HUMANITY AS LIVESTOCK, AND WISHED TO DEVOUR EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US"

"All i want is what is best for humanity" which would be truth, since he believes this to be the best outcome. Also its not a polygraph test, he can say anything he wants.

This imbalance gives me a suspicion that the true motives of Asterion are still hidden, and all this crap about consuming humanity either was directly planted into Sunny's mind, or dreamspawn used Sunny's impression of him to guide him towards that idea, and then just played along. Either way, if Neph is forced to bring up his "political agenda" in the upcoming debates, Asterion will rightfully accuse her of slandering her opponent right in front of the audience and the walking lie detector.

So,we all know VTB stole Weaver's eye whether it being Weaver was distracted by something else and caught off guard or loss in the confrontation.
But is that really what happened?
As stated,Weaver was stronger than your typical Divine-being the Firstborn of Dream God,I always found it hard to believe that Weaver, the person that can see the Future in its entirety, was able to be caught off guard. Sure you can argue Weaver might have been Sacred at the time but even then his strength of being a fragment of Dream God should still apply to the Sacred Rank.
What am I trying to say?
Weaver willingly gave VTB his eye.
But then the next question would be,Why?
Now we all know Sunny's distaste for being [Fated],having his life already planned with him having no say in it.
Weaver probably already knew that Sunny would try his hardest to find a way to become Fateless.
But An Unwilling Disciple is a Waste of Time,Why would Weaver waste his time with Sunny instead of finding someone who is willing to take up the role of [Fated]? Unless you can make said Unwilling Disciple a Willing Disciple.
But how can Weaver achieve that?
By attaching [Fated] to the very thing that Sunny Desires the most:
His Friends and the Love of his Life
    Kai,Effie,Jet,Cassie,Rain,Nephis,etc
Do you see where I'm going with this?
All of this is part of Weaver's plan,he made some type of deal with VTB to take away Sunny's Fate,so Sunny can accept that he must bear the role of [Fated] if he wants his friends, his girlfriend and to ascend to Sacred and Divine(easier).

That would mean that Weaver knew the forgotten god wouldn't be asleep forever which he probably knew so he gave his eye to VTB to steal Sunny's fate which lead to Sunny become fateless. Whic made him believe that at some point a new era will have to ability to defeat the forgotten god but did Weaver really know that or was he grasping at straws because when Sunny put on Weaver's mask the strings of fate looked mangled and tangled which meant Weaver stop being able to see fate when Sunny became fateless which meant at one point Weaver lost his connection to Fate meaning he couldn't see the future if we believe the Nightmare Spell is omni-present whatever us happening in their era is like a blind spot for weaver leading to Weaver either being shocked and expecting it. SO I believe in this theory but I believe Weaver wanted to prepare Sunny as to what might happen to the entirety of the world if fate was to disappear and have precautions in place to keep piece. ANd the VTB is or was in the same position as Weaver unable to see fate and maybe monitor Sunny to expect when he will come to kill VTB to recollect his fate.

Ngl. All i can picture asterion as rn is that one Reddit warrior Meme image

For such a hyped Evil supreme he is genuinely grasping at cotton straws.

Nephis does rule over humanity because she is the strongest and because no one else could have become as strong as her.

Asterion genuinely should not be able to turn a single Saint against her Unless its one of the ones that were exiled. Half of the saints there could have been killed by her as a saint yet were spared because she did not see them as her enemy.

In fact saints if anything should probably just be immune from forcibly being enthralled by asterion simply because, a master seeing a saint beat 7 saints by themselves would be left in awe, a saint seeing a saint beat 7 saints and sparing them would understand the full magnitude of that feat

I can imagine mundane people being swayed simply because just the thought of doubt is probably enough for asterion to bend it far out of proportion. Masters would fare better but not to enough to make the infection moot

    I think this could happen:

Asterion: the lord of shadows is still alive and acting in the shadows, what a deceiver you are!

Nephis: *sigh* ....What? is that it? ....We had reason to believe one of the gods of the past is still alive, the forgotten god. Remembering his name is hard as it slips from the mind easily, but right now, the Spell is keeping him asleep. We know from our third nightmare that the gods have routinely destroyed human civilisations for worshiping the daemons, likely because they are his offspring. The lord of shadows is a supreme who has one of their lineages, so as a precaution he played the part of sellsword and we faked his death. If the general populace knew of his existence before one of us became Supreme, or even a Spirit at least, It would put the human domain at risk.

    Or

"How immature... revealing his secret here. What if it leaks? The king of Nothing might learn of it, so might any of our other future enemies."

    Or

suggest that it's "his secret" keep him mysterious and ephemeral. make it seem grave.

But I see now this has issues. The others would think "then would put it at risk now?, "what other secrets don't we know of, aren't we the top brass?" and Asterion might threaten to make his thralls worship Sunny.

Dude, all they had to do was reveal that Sunny is Nobody, everyone already knows about the forgotten one thanks to his report, all they had to do was explain the reason for his 'death'. "I had to die because I have the Weaver lineage, to venerate me is the same as venerating the forgotten one."

Changing Star has way too many 'skeletons in her closet', enough to damage her image and credibility. By bringing Kai into the mix, the man who can tell truth from lie paints her in a positive light.. But that light can be used to blind her.

Kai can tell truth from lie, but that also means he can twist truth into a lie, damaging his credibility. Kai has accumulated many secrets under changing star as well.

First Cassie, Effie, Neph now Kai, he's effectively attacking the cohort where it hurts, their espect, family, domain and credibility... I wouldn't be shocked if he dropped the damning secret of all..

The continued existence of the lord of shadow and his elite shadow clan.

I think Sunny's could be the triumph card in this discussion. Because Asterion knows Sunny's officially dead but he doesn't know why.

So he could use Nephys lie against her. However Sunny could also appear of his own will and proclaim himself an enemy of human dominion along with Asterion then all humanity would see them as enemies. He dies one time and survive so its not so strange thinck he can do It again. And he is a Suprem, he could say he is the one who free Asterion from the moon.

I dont thinck this would wake the forgotten god. After all he's known by everyone even though they think he's dead. Therefore, by declaring himself an enemy, he would not be worshiped or loved by humanity.
