Chapter 2758: Dire Ambition

When a seed of a troubling theory formed itself in Sunny's mind, he tried his hardest to suppress his shock. However, he must have let something show, because the shadows across the Ivory Tower suddenly grew restless.

Nephis spared him a brief glance and continued her verbal duel with Asterion. Sunny, meanwhile, was too preoccupied with exploring his suspicion, wanting to turn it into certainty... and dreading that certainty, as well.

‘It can't be. Can it be?'

He examined the facts.

All of them were things he had already known. However, only after meeting Asterion face-to-face did it become possible to assign real weight to these tidbits of knowledge and, therefore, draw connections between them.

The first hint...

Was the timing of Asterion's supposed return.

He had mentioned having to push his plans forward because of Neph's unexpected ascension to the throne of Supremacy. But what about it had made Asterion feel hurried, exactly?

Maybe the answer to that question was not as important as the question itself. Asterion had mentioned planning to escape his lunar prison soon after the Chain of Nightmares, as if it held some hidden meaning.

He had spent decades imprisoned on the Moon. So why would he only want to escape after Antarctica fell, and not at any point before? The death of the Sovereigns had apparently nothing to do with it, even if they had been responsible for ruthlessly ensuring the continued non-existence of his insidious Domain.

There were numerous potential answers to that question. The fact that the Sovereigns had finally revealed themselves, for example. The arrival of the Skinwalker and other Great Ones on Earth; the Dream Realm beginning to devour the waking world piece by piece. The conflict between the Great Clans moving toward open war, thus distracting the original Supremes...

But what if the real reason was something else?

Sunny was suddenly reminded of the conversation between him and Morgan that had happened in the Nightmare Desert soon after the disastrous Battle of the Black Skull. She had been planning to leave them and escape with the Summer Knight, while Sunny had been planning to challenge the Third Nightmare as a means of escape.

So, he had asked Morgan if he would face consequences for attaining Transcendence without the permission of the Great Clans... and she told him that he did not have to worry about that.

Because critical mass had already been reached, and the waking world's collapse could not be delayed anymore. So...

The Chain of Nightmares was when the Sovereigns had stopped artificially suppressing the number of emerging Saints. That was when Asterion had begun to plan his return.

Sunny remembered another conversation, as well.

That one was not a conversation with Morgan — instead, it was a conversation with her sinister brother, Mordret.

It happened back in Mirage City, where Mordret revealed to him how Asterion had ended up on the moon, as well as the fact that he would inevitably return and pose a grave danger to everyone.

Mordret had described Asterion as what Nephis was supposed to be, but taken to a logical conclusion. A being that walked on the edge between a human and a Nightmare Creature.

Nephis and Asterion were like two sides of the same coin, or perhaps twisted reflections of each other. Nephis had denied the Nightmare Creature part of herself, so much so that she became the epitome of humanity, as well as its ruler. Asterion, meanwhile, embraced the creature part of himself fully, to the point that he did not even consider himself to be human.

Now that Sunny had heard Asterion personally confirm Mordret's description, he was struck by a sudden revelation.

In hindsight, it felt almost obvious... like most things were.

And the key to that revelation was a third conversation Sunny remembered.

That last conversation had nothing to do with the Valor siblings. Instead, it was a conversation with Nightwalker, who had been betrayed and abandoned by Asterion in the Eternal City.

It was not about the Dreamspawn himself, though.

It was about a different monster...

The primordial human who had been cursed by Shadow God at the dawn of time, Kanakht.

Kanakht had become the ruler of the first human kingdom, in the end. However, he was not satisfied with his historic throne — instead, Kanakht wanted to become a god. * To achieve Apotheosis.

No matter how much he tried, though, godhood eluded him. His kingdom slowly turned into a land of nightmares, ruined by his obsession, but eventually, Kanakht did find a way to become a deity.

He learned how to achieve Apotheosis through consuming his kingdom, as well as all its citizens... and he would have succeeded if the Demon of Repose had not stopped him.

‘Damn... ation’

Nightwalker had explained something else to Sunny, as well. It was the way Tyrants became Terrors.

They became Terrors by consuming the minions.

So, now...

Here was a man named Asterion, who did not consider himself human and thought of himself as a creature instead.

Creatures walked the Path of Ascension in a different manner from humans. Wouldn't that mean that Asterion, born to the zealots of the Path of Ascension cult, could strive to emulate that manner himself?

He was not a Tyrant, though, and did not control an army of minions.

Instead, he was a Supreme who controlled a Domain.

Just like Kanakht had controlled the first human kingdom.

So if Asterion — the descendant of the God of Hunger — expanded his Domain to encompass all of humanity... could he attempt to consume humanity in order to fuel his Apotheosis?

Sunny sensed a cold shiver run down his spine.

'T—that... that lunatic.'

Asterion might not have spent decades on the Moon because he couldn't come back. Instead, he might have simply remained there, far above Earth... waiting for humanity to fatten up.

And only when the number of powerful humans began to rise exponentially in the wake of the Chain of Nightmares, thus offering him a big enough feast, did he decide to come back.

You're talking about Asterion, Apotheosis, Sunny regaining her fate, Cassie achieving supremacy, but you're forgetting the most important thing: what kind of Dreamspawn is little Ling, now that it's been confirmed that he's the last Dreamspawn to be born and there won't be another.

"But there are only three Dreamspawn in the world. You, me, and that Transcendent brat—the rest are dead. Meanwhile, after the Nightmare Chain, countless children were born in the Dream Realm... but none of them are like us. That's because they never belonged to either world—from the moment of their conception, they already belonged to the Dream Realm. The waking world will also soon disappear. Do you understand what that means?"

        Asterion's gaze grew heavy.

"It means there will never be a fourth Dreamspawn. The three of us are all that exists and all that will ever exist."

You are looking at it as the perspective of a Reader. looking from their perspective, they don't know about his Aspect abilities or his True Name(I am sure he has one), and Remember that while they are preparing for confrontation with Asterion, they are also expanding Human Domain in the Dream Realm and making territories hospitable for Billlions left to come into the dream realm from the waking world, lot of work for Sunny, Nephis and Cassie.
Sunny can't make a Prison or memory without knowing info about his Enemy. Plus his Weaving is good but not as good as the Mad Prince who spent probably 500 or more years in the Nightmare

Speaking of the prison for Asterion, i remembered the prison under the temple where your abilities are sealed, or the prison for Mordreth on the shackled islands where Cassie and the Sunless one ended up. They have two of the best experts in witchcraft, Cassie and Sunless, and also blacksmiths of the sword domain, as well as two name magic specialists - Nephis and Rain. They knew that it was necessary to prepare for the invasion at least 1 month before the start of active operations; at least 1 incarnation of the sunless could devote to this. We, as readers, also do not know the aspect and true name of Asterion, but at the same time, the Sunless one has faced mental attacks more than once, he could strengthen the resistance for himself and his allies, or make an attacking curse aimed at the mind, there was time and opportunity for this, but so far he has not done anything. The Sunless one is now supreme, unlike the Cursed Prince, and although he did not have much time to study weaving, he learned a lot by watching the work of the Spell when he created a blessing for himself and the Nephis

No, but this is about tyrant to titan, not supreme to sacred

What I mean is that this is not the process for becoming sacred. This is the process of becoming a Titan. Remember, Kanakht wanted to become a Titan by absorbing all his minions. That's the same thing Asterion wants to do.

I have a few questions swirling in my mind that go beyond the current chapters and touch upon the very foundation of the lore.

We know that Sunny yearns to reclaim his fate and finally be able to trust Nephis completely. However, there’s a major paradox here: True Names are intrinsically linked to fate, which is why Sunny lost his True Name when he lost his destiny. We’ve seen that Sunny being 'Fateless' essentially shattered the threads of fate worldwide, making everything unpredictable. In this case, if Sunny reclaims his fate, will the Spell grant him a brand-new True Name, or will he remain nameless forever?

Secondly: If a divine entity were to emerge—one that is forgotten by everyone and everything, just like Sunny was after leaving the Tomb of Ariel, yet entirely independent of fate—would such a being essentially become something akin to a creature of the Void?

As a final footnote: We all want Sunny to get his fate back and be remembered by his loved ones. He himself is ready to trust Nephis. Yet, that iconic line from his very first nightmare keeps echoing in my head: 'There is nothing worse than a slave who trusts their master.'

I’d love to hear your theories on this. Does this logic seem sound to you, or am I missing something? Enlighten me

Even if sunny reclaims his fate, the threads of fate of present time remains shattered (for threads of fate of future, it may be modified/damaged a little) so if sunny wants reclaim his fate then he needs repair/create threads of fate of present time and after reclaiming his fate the True name will be based on present and future sunny going to accomplish.

I dont think so im pretty sure they said somewhere after he was forgotten thst even if he got his fate back the damage is too great though he personally would have a fate and thus be entwined in the great tapestry letting his friends remember him but the tapestry is still torn asunder so they can re write fate with theyre own hands and change the ending where the forgotten god wakes up

It is possible that True Names dont have power anymore after the Fate was destroyed. We can see this in the chapter where Cassie tries finding herself in her memories - she says that her name is no longer valid since Fate has been destroyed and it depends on her to chart her own path and so it is probably impossible to get another one or to change the one you already have - unless the Fate is somehow repaired / changed. So Sunny should still be Lost from Light.

For your second point I dont know. We arent sure if the Fate is a divine law created by the Forgotten god or something else. But I Think that Ariel has written void beings true names in the Estuary of River of time or maybe it was different knowledge about void since True Names are connected to your Fate. Well who knows?

As for the footnote this is interesting. This maybe a forshadowing and also the famous Cassies vision from the Forgotten Shore which some Think that it was for the final battle - with the Forgotten God, for Nightmare Spell and for deciding future of humanity.

The way I see it, the nightmare spell is intrinsically tied with the weave of fate, and that’s how it gives true names, by reading the weave of fate regarding that person.

So for Sunny, the nightmare spell could only read up to where he was still connected to fate, since the nightmare spell can only operate within the weave of fate. If/when he gets his fate back, he won’t have the same type of connection to fate, since he’s changed his fate by living as he has whilst fateless.

Hence, either the nightmare spell doesn’t know how to deal with this and glitches out and doesn’t give him a true name or something like this, or the nightmare spell treats him as a new instantiation of a person, rather than Sunny reclaiming the fate he had.

Essentially, I think Sunny getting his fate back will not be the same fate he had before he lost it, since he has changed his fate after having lost it.

As far as I understood, A True Names are unique identifier thread which connect soul of the living individual to threads of Fate. Every object is connected to threads of Fate and I guess a True Name makes the connection stronger. The Vile Thieving Bird stole thread connecting Sunny to Fate, and hence he lost his True Name. After getting his Fate back, a new True Name technically would not be given since, Lost From Light can mean him being a Divine Shadow or his Fate to be in the shadow of his Master, or him being Forgotten by the World and his Master. Since he is Fated his true name can encompass all of above. We still can't be clear as the meaning of his true name was never explained by G3(probably deliberately to keep us guessing).
I personally think that no new true name will be given, and if otherwise it will be a romantic scene where Sunny will propose to Changing Star with his new True Name as he already compared their Relationship like Marriage from their conversation with Effie

      Being 'Fateless' didn't shatter Fate, it was the importance Sunny would have had if he ever survived to that point- Sunny isn't the only one relevant to the world. I'm thinking Fate has multiple possibilities with one or more getting put out cause the end goal of everyone's fate is irrefutable;

      Death

      The only reason Sunny had such a major impact on Fate was because the number of truly strong individuals relevant on a wider scale are that small. Had there been many more, less entangled with Sunny, there'd be a small blind spot but Fate would remain as is. That wasn't the case tho, so for your first theory;

      He's still Lost from Light

The spell categorized his soul; everything that made him up before he got his True Name. At the heart of all it- he's still Sunless the guy who made it out the mud and is still trudging along to a better future. That's whos he is. That's who he'll continue to be.

Isn't that just the Daemon of Oblivion?

If an "Entity" were to leave at this point of time? They'd have to be. There's no way- I can't think of the circumstances of where they'll not be. Literally. They should just stay in a corner since clearly they weren't leaving major impacts before all this.

And finally? Yeah. We can laugh and call it romantic all we want but there's really nothing worse than a slave who trusts their master

Just the option of an irrevocable command will always be on the back of Sunny's mind. Cassia's stunt allowed him to consider, and for that? He's grateful.

          Still.

A lover you can never truly disagree with
A lover you can't truly deny

A love that will never truly be equal.

It's a beautiful thought. To give to completely. But if my lover was truly damaging herself? Willing? Stubbornly? Completely convinced she's right?
