Chapter 2727: Darker Shades

The being remembered its name.

She was Cassia, Song of the Fallen. A blind seer who was destined to bear witness to fate...

Or at least, she had been.

Fate was torn and mutilated, after all. She had mutilated it. Fate had been delivered a mortal wound by the very beings who were supposed to be its heralds, and was now coming undone as the promised future ceased to exist.

Song of the Fallen was not a mere witness anymore. She was an architect of what was to come, instead. Destruction, salvation... no matter what end awaited them in the future, she would have built it with her own frail hands.

‘Does that True Name fit me, still?’

The being — Cassia — observed the dark expanse of shattered memories once more. Now that she knew who she had been, she could discern which ones were her own better.

But not well enough to gain clarity.

She had been a strange existence, it seemed. She was someone who had lived dozens of lives at the same time, experiencing the world through countless conduits of her subtle Aspect. Those who were powerful and those who were weak; those who served her and those who did not. Men and women, mundane and Awakened, young and old...

The memories of their lives were intertwined with those of her own, inseparable. More than that, the memories of the past were intertwined with the memories of the future — one that would not come to pass, at least not anymore. There were memories that she should not have possessed at all, as well. A vast ocean of them, bearing on her with the crushing weight of eternity... memories of the worlds that had perished, of the ancient past that had been erased from the pages of history by the passage of time.

‘What has happened to me?’

She knew who she had been, but who was she now?

How did she end up in this ocean of memories?

What was her purpose here?

She lingered until a sudden realization struck her.

‘These memories... it's me.'

They were the building blocks of what had made Cassia who she was.

She had been shattered, and now, she had to assemble herself back from these pieces. If the shape she created was true, a woman named Cassia would continue to exist.

If not... something else would take her place.

If she failed to fit the shards together entirely, her existence would be scattered by the wind.

‘How ironic...’

It seemed that she had to build the Labyrinth first in order to escape it.

That man, Asterion, had compared her to Ariadne. But he was wrong... Song of the Fallen was not only Ariadne, the traitorous princess of Crete.

She was also Minos, its king. She was also Daedalus, who built the Labyrinth at his order. She was also the Minotaur, who was imprisoned in the darkness and forced to eat human meat.

She was also Theseus, who killed both the monstrous brother and the naive sister who had given him the life-saving string.

That was why failing to kill her on that day was a fatal error that could not be undone. The Dreamspawn was a terrifying foe... so much so that there was hardly a being out there capable of overcoming his insatiable malice.

So, what would doom him in the end was his own hunger.

Tendrils of Will extended toward the sea of memories, grasping dozens of them and pulling them close.

She absorbed a tiny, insignificant shard first.

The memory might have been slight, but it was clearer and more vivid than almost any other. Its edges were vicious and sharp.

In that memory, she was a young, frightened girl laying on cold stone as the sounds of a dark sea washed over her, filling her heart with terror. The world was cruelly dark, devoid of all shapes and colors. She was blind, weak, and useless. She was only alive due to the benevolence of others, and even if she was too frightened to think it, she knew that the cup of their benevolence could run dry at any moment.

Her companions were behind her now, having a quiet conversation. The sound of their voices had awoken her, and now, she was failing to fall back asleep.

“How did you know that I'm a Legacy?" That was Neph’'s voice. Nephis was the person who had saved her, back when Cassie was lost in the darkness, shedding tears as she waited for a lone and gruesome death. Even now, hearing her speak made Cassie feel warm... Nephis was like a lone ray of sunlight in the darkness that had shrouded her world, giving her more than mere comfort.

Giving her hope.

“Simple. I heard Caster mention it. He was scolding other Sleepers to make them treat you with respect."

That voice belonged to Sunny, their new companion.

Sunny was largely a stranger... but to Cassie, he was special.

That was because sometime during their days at the Academy, she had seen a vision of his past. In that vision, he was quietly celebrating his birthday on the day of the winter solstice, hiding from the biting wind and the toxic smog of the outskirts in a rusty shipping container.

Because of that vision, he was the only Sleeper whose face Cassie knew. She had already been blind by the time she arrived at the Academy, so everyone else — even Nephis — were like disembodied voices that called out to her from the darkness.

But Sunny had a face. Hearing him and knowing what he looked like made Cassie feel human again, and so, she cherished his voice a lot.

"Can I ask another question?"

Cassie gave up her attempts to fall back to sleep and opened her eyes in the darkness, curious to hear what he was going to ask. Sunny spoke in a blunt, indifferent tone: “Why are you burdening yourself with her?" She froze.

Nephis seemed to have smiled slightly. “Why? Wouldn't you?"

His response came after a short pause, sounding cold and disgruntled:

"No."

No.

‘Ah...’

It hurt.

She let go of the memory, feeling like its edges had cut her Will.

It was funny how many things could sometimes depend on a single word. That one word had colored her impression of Sunny in darker shades, and that darker hue in turn shaped much of what would happen beyond that old, lightless memory.

Would history have turned out differently if Sunny had given Neph a different answer on that cold night on the Forgotten Shore? If he had been able to lie?

Would it have changed for the better or worse?

No one knew, and no one would ever come to know.

Not even her.

I mean if we being real anybody I her place would've done the same. Who would you rather save when given the choice. A person who would save you even of it gave them nothing or a person who you know would discard you if you got in the way?

Disliking Cassia doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the writing behind her character or what she brings to the story. Even Cassia herself admits what she did was wrong and cowardly, that she has no excuse for doing hence why she did so much to give Sunless the opportunity to be free again. Also, let’s hold of on saying she has fully “redeemed” herself, as there is the possibility that Cassia knew that Sunless would be forgotten by everyone but choose to lie and manipulated him through omission. After all, she found a note that had Sunless’ name written down on it by herself which led her to meeting Sunny after the 4 year Timeskip. This means Cassia COULD have known the price of becoming Fateless but didn’t want to tell Sunless in fear that he might refuse to become Fateless. Also, strange how Cassia waited until the ONE person (Kai) who would be able to tell just how sincere and genuine her words were wasn’t around when she told Sunless.Cassia is still suspicious to me at least.
Cassia didn’t need to make a choice because Nephis would never betray her principles & her decision to pick sides made a bad situation into a terrible one. There was a right choice and that was to simply choose not to betray one of her friends for the sake of another. Cassie could have chosen to keep things to herself and hope for the best.
If she had done this instead the outcome would been Neph remaining behind in the Forgotten Shore (since she had no intention of banning Sunny) and Sunless returning to the Waking World but he’s on good terms with Cassie. Or she could have decided to trust her friends and reveal everything that she knew and all three of them could have come with a solution. I wouldn’t have betrayed Sunless if I was in Cassia’s position not when he has done just as much as Nephis and more to take care of me

Well obviously now they are cool and she's not in love with him right now.

If you look at it. They were 17 year old teenagers who were at the bottom of the academy rankings and were rejected by everyone. Then dumped by the spell together along with Nephis an a dangerous region and survived everyday together for months where Cassie survived due to Sunny protecting her and also sharing the food with her alongside with Nephis. And this new info with Sunny being the only face she saw before going blind. She is bound to have feelings of love for Sunny

This is basically the plotline of every new fantasy adventure novels out there that has romance in it.

I suppose this explains why she betrayed Sunny's trust on that forgotten shore, telling changing star his true name. For a newly made sleeper who's life has seemingly shattered around her waiting for Death, and having the only person who she has seen a face of since going blind, essentially call her useless and a burden wood easily change anyone's heart

I wouldn’t have betrayed Sunless if I was in Cassia’s position not when he has done just as much as Nephis and more to take care of me

It is most likely Neph & Cassie would died in the FS if they never met Sunny, I read up to CH2260 if Sunny actually comforted with the choice to abandon Cassie in the FS…

I doubt he would actually do it he would just be less happy about it than Neph.

Sunny even proven that he can to put he’s own well being at risk & won’t abandon his friends when he saved Cassie & Neph from the Devouring Tree &

when Cassie was about to drown to death in the Dark Sea it was Sunny own choice to go back & save her. Yet, she STILL betrayed him ? Of course fans would hate her for that

He saved Cassie’s life about 3 times & helped take care of her just as much as Neph did, thanks to Sunny’s 1st Echo he received the cohort’s speed increased greatly when traveling to the Dark City..

& he had Cassie ride on it for her convenience & protection while traveling. Cassie choosing not do anything about her vision and choosing to wait and see happens wouldn’t…….

have been a betrayal to Nephis at all. However, giving Sunny’s True Name to Neph knowing full well it’s some kind of weakness to Sunny & doing with the expectation of it leading to his death…..

is a SERIOUS betrayal to Sunless dispute all the times he saved Cassie’s life but the times he saved entire cohort which concludes her too. Fans rightly don’t like that

In the 3rd Nightmare, Cassie herself admits what she did was wrong and cowardly, that she has no excuse for doing hence why she did so much to give Sunless the opportunity to be free again.

Even when we look at from Cassie’s perspective there’s nothing that justifies forsaking Sunny & when we think about it logically it’s not that understandable also which makes it worse.

During the ENTIRE FS Arc Sunless has saved Cassia’s life more times than Nephis (I’m counting the times Sunny saved the whole Cohort too)

If Cassie had chosen to simply wait and see what happens instead of picking sides & betraying one of her friends, she & Sunny would have been on good terms.Neph had no intention of abandoning Sunless

First off, I'm not reading all that. You need to condensed it to a few sentences at least.

Second off I never said I was hating on Cassie and I never said that she was fully redeemed, I was just pointing out that now we understand why she did some of the things she did

Ignore that guy who didn't read your comment. I read it.

Sunny was a vagrant. Unless GuiltyThree made some type of situation that would make Sunny recognize Her value? Sunny would've abandoned her. Sunny at that time was more self-serving, unconcerned and generally? If not for his Flaw? Haha.

        Sunny proved that after they survived that one night in a dark sea on a cliff that may or may not shatter and leave them to the forces. The journey after, together, and with her rare bouts of vision giving benefits and warnings (also time spent together-but that's an after thought-) which made Sunny risk his life back then;

Made him want to assure Nephis and Cassia's survival, and that's not including without them he might not have survived either.

        It's not the amount of time she was saved that matters, if we say that, we can also say Sunny just wanted to secure a valuable person and we're not discrediting the betrayal but recognizing they were all friends. Say what you will but the decision wasn't easy she agonized and more than that;

She wanted amends and more importantly? She Worked Her Ass Off To Do It.

Things were tuff, real tuff, but Cassia? Despite her disability she wasn't gonna be a reactionary.
