Chapter 2706: Fox in the Henhouse

[You have slain a Great Tyrant, Soul of Kanakht.]

[You have slain a Corrupted Devil, Aletes of the Nine.]

Jet glanced up at the dark sky of the Eternal City.

She should have felt ecstatic, but instead, the thought that came to mind was...

‘D—damn.'

She had not been away for long, but the sky above her was crumbling.

The torrential rain had turned into an apocalyptic downpour, and here and there, colossal hexagonal pillars towered above the ruined city. From afar, it seemed as if they were supporting the invisible dome of the sky, but it did not take Jet more than a moment to realize what they really were. The vast surface of the invisible dome turned out to be composed of countless hexagons, and as some of them faded out of existence, the cold waters of the Stormsea rushed down under devastating pressure. The giant pillars were not supporting the dome — they were water falling through the breaches in the dome, still contained in their shape.

On top of that, the Palace was nowhere to be seen. Instead of it, a gargantuan mass of bent metal was floating in the air, groaning as it was being bent even further.

‘By the dead gods. I only stepped out for a moment...'

On the positive side, the Shadow Legion seemed to have been pushing the wraiths back. And now that both the Tyrant controlling them and the Devil controlling the Tyrant were gone, those wraiths were barely a threat. They would be wiped out before too long.

‘Right.'

Jet finally remembered what she had done. She had killed them.

The Soul of Kanakht, the Cursed Wanderer. The horror of the seas, Dutchman, and its fearsome captain were both gone, slain by her hand like many abominations before them. Jet had killed countless Nightmare Creatures throughout the years, but still... This was her crowning achievement. A Saint killing a Great Tyrant was not exactly a common occurrence — in fact, it was something that was not really supposed to happen.

And yet, Jet had done it.

In the end, it had all come down to the decision she made after activating the special ability granted to the Mist Blade by the soul of the Heart of Kanakht.

Jet had wanted to attempt killing the Cursed Wanderer, but she was not sure if she would be able to. It was a gamble, and a perilous one at that.

So, in the end, she went with a different gamble.

Instead of trying to slay the master of the Soul of Kanakht, he chose to be swallowed by it.

It was not an entirely reckless decision. Jet had been studying the Dutchman and its wraiths for a while by then. She had especially noted that the ghostly cutlass kept emanating torrents of ethereal light, summoning more spectral warriors onto the battlefield... which meant that its hold was not empty yet.

The Soul of Kanakht was a hungry beast that had devoured countless souls throughout the ages.

However...

Jet had quite an appetite herself.

She wanted to kill the Cursed Wanderer, but that was not her task. Her task was to hold him back and buy her allies enough time to accomplish their goals. The Soul of Kanakht was his source of power, so if she could destroy or weaken it, that would achieve the same result.

Plus, she had just the needed constitution to do that, being a wraith and all.

So instead of trying to kill the Cursed Wanderer in the single heartbeat granted to her by the Heart of Kanakht, Jet severed his hand and took hold of the ghostly cutlass instead.

She knew that it would consume her. In fact, the very purpose of stealing the Soul of Kanakht was to be consumed by it. Still, when she felt herself being drawn into the viridian blade, she could not help but feel unnerved and cursed quietly.

In the next moment, she was gone.

Out there in the belly of the Soul of Kanakht, the world was different.

There was no world there, actually, to begin with.

There was no space, no time, no life, no death.

Just a vague expanse of viridian glow that enveloped her like a mire...

And the presence of many souls that the Tyrant had consumed, just like her.

But there was one crucial difference between Jet and those subjugated souls. They had been killed before becoming thralls of the Soul of Kanakht. Jet, however, had been dead to begin with... she entered captivity as a malevolent wraith, not as a hapless soul stripped of its flesh.

And that allowed Jet a measure of independence, at least for a brief moment. She was on the verge of dying by then, her soul almost entirely drained of essence. The tyrannical Will of the Soul of Kanakht descended upon her, striving to suffocate her sense of self and make her a mindless, obedient thrall. It might have succeeded, as well — it would have, probably, given a chance.

But Jet did not give the Soul of Kanakht an opportunity to conquer her.

Instead, she used that brief moment to raise the Mist Blade and focused her killing intent into a razor-sharp scythe.

One slash of that scythe was enough to harvest every enthralled soul within the Great Tyrant.

After all, there was no space and no time there. That meant that all of the captured souls occupied the same space, and unleashing ten thousand strikes took the same amount of time as striking once.

So, like a fox in the henhouse, Soul Reaper Jet slaughtered every single phantom contained within the Soul of Kanakht in an instant.

‘Uh-oh.'

A tsunami of essence flooded her crumbling soul, mending it in an instant.

Much more impactful was the great torrent of fragments that flowed into her shattered soul core.

The core, which had been growing steadily for decades, suddenly ballooned, increasing in size at a speed visible to the naked eye.

It had instantly grown so vast and so heavy, in fact, that Jet's Transcendent soul started to struggle with bearing its weight.

‘That's... quite a boon. I think.'

Jet felt strange. Much more powerful, yes, but also... dangerously unbalanced.

She would deal with that later, though. For now...

Jet had slaughtered every soul enveloped by the viridian glow with her first strike. Her second strike was aimed at the walls of her prison itself.

It was as if she were cutting a way through the belly of a beast after being swallowed by it.

Soon enough, the strange unworld surrounding her shattered, and she found herself under the tempestuous sky of the Eternal City once again.

Standing in front of the Cursed Wanderer. The sinister wraith seemed greatly diminished now that the source of his power was destroyed. Jet, meanwhile, felt more powerful than ever.

So, she brought her scythe down and erased her adversary from existence.

That was how the dreadful legend of the Cursed Wanderer and his appalling ship ended.

That was how a new chapter was added to the glorious legend of the Soul Reaper Jet, as well.

While I do think she fulfilled the requirements for supremacy, I dont really want her to advance, I'd much prefer she did it with the rest of the Cohort, I imagine she'll get an aspect evolution though, since she killed a member of the nine, and not even a copy, but a real member.

I think natural supremacy would be so awesome for jet, but what's her act of rebellion here? (I forgot what it's actually called)

If she doesn't ascend here, Sunny/Neph might choose to make this the moment to have their saints challenge the next trial.

Having a saint with the power of a supreme would be an incredible boon for their odds. If she fails to reach natural supremacy or expends those massive reserves for something before their next nightmare trial, then her and the other saints would likely have much lower odds

Defiance is the word. I think they will most likely be going to the 4th nm soon either the end of the volume or early in the next one and while they do that asterion may strike or they take the night garden and attack asterion but thats risky bc of the unholy

    'Right.'

Jet finally remembered what she had done. She had killed them.

The Soul of Kanakht, the Cursed Wanderer. The horror of the seas, the Flying Dutchman, and its fearsome captain had vanished, slain by her hand like so many other abominations before them. Jet had killed countless Nightmare Creatures over the years, but still… This was her ultimate feat. A Saint killing a Great Tyrant wasn't exactly a common event—in fact, it was something that shouldn't happen.

And yet, Jet had done it.

In fact, it instantly grew so large and became so heavy that Jet's transcendent soul began to struggle to support its weight.

G3, don't confuse me. I'm not that smart. You can't leave this information out. I'm an anxious person.

    (I accidentally deleted this post)

I have nothing to say about this chapter, maybe congratulations, Jet, on your supremacy, I guess.

What I wanted to say is that, during these two years that I've been reading this site, I've finally managed to distinguish the different types of people who appear in these comments: there are those who like demons, those who constantly create theories, those who create insane and nonsensical theories, those who comment, those who have indulged in profanity and comment on the most absurd things I've ever read, the people who came from LotM to spread the word of the fool and the true creator, and the demon worshippers who pretend not to be worshippers, worshippers of God don't exist. I like you all very much, peculiar community, praise be to the true creator and hail Weaver.

It's a shame to see such a cool and promising antagonist get killed in one hit. One of the Nine, the storm of worlds, died in one hit.
I wouldn't be surprised if Asterion was the same. What a f#cking disappointment. Go G3

Bro the dutchmen was a goddamn corrupted devil, meaning that it was at most a transcendent as a human. So yeah it's better it got wiped within a single strike.

He was one of the Nine, the ones who destroyed the world. An entire army of ghosts, Orfna almost died fighting him. And now he's being foolishly defeated. When Asterion is defeated in one blow, will you still say he's just a Great Beast?

There was a noble young man with calm and wise eyes. A boy with red hair - an unusual color in this land. A scholarly woman with a long black braid, her graceful beauty both subtle and bewitching.

There was also a tall warrior with broad shoulders, his towering height making the others seem puny. A slender man in elegant clothes who looked like a sculptor. A ship captain whose rough skin had turned bronze in the sun, his eyes the same color as the sea. A blind poet whose songs were renowned across the realm. A woman who was either a priestess or a courtesan, or possibly both…

Each and every one of them, except the boy, was famous for one reason or another. Some of them were immensely powerful, while some were only slightly so, but all were outstanding

You got to remember not all of them are as immensely strong. Maybe Eurys, Slayer were stronger than most.

What made them impressive was because they were all fated. So they were destined to change everything , power doesn't mean it can trump everything. If one's might was the factor that could change fate then the gods wouldn't be dead.

It's not like he was a combat or a high level of the nine plus jet fks up alot of people on even level with one strike she can kill someone. Alot of his power was from the soul of kanakht which was destroyed by jet and since he has no weapon anymore and jet is boosted by all the extra essence yes he just dies. Also notice how 2 other great beasts(anvil and kisong) got low-mid diffed by sunny and nephis after just ascending so yes asterion won't be physically stronger than them

Slayer was also 1 of 9. She even spent a thousand years of perfecting battle in shadow realm. Even higher evolution than cursed wanderer in terms of power. How come you didn't question when she was incapacitated in 1 hit by fellow 9? Wasn't she the most proficient and accomplished godslayer among the 9?

Orphne was NOWHERE near defeat against him bro, Orphne was just tired and probably low on energy reserves specifically due to fighting non-stop for the past 3 days.
The entire army of ghosts belonged to the Soul of Kanakht (well of souls), not the Dutchmen (one of the nine).
The dutchmen was not foolishly defeated, he was just robbed of his greatest power in his arsenal that was the Soul of Kanakht (well of souls), so the moment he lost it, he lost majority of his power too. Defeating a Corrupted Devil is something that Sunny used to do as a mere ascended lol, you think Jet who is on par with a Supreme Beast cannot do that?
Also don't forget that Jet was a being that even humans of higher ranks feared, she is an extraordinary existence and I'd say she is as lethal as Saint Sunny

So Jet is still a Transcendent but probably on the cusp of becoming a Supreme.

Since she has already slain the Heart of Kanakht and the Soul of Kanakht, I'd say let her have the kill on the Madness of Kanakht and the Flesh of Kanakht as well to complete the Exodia.

Pretty sure she is as strong as Anvil/Asterion in terms of physical stats, simply because she was on par with sovereign before the fight, now that the fight got concluded with Jet receiving massive boons, she should be par with Asterion or even greater (only if we exclude will and domain ofcourse)

I think jet has to become supreme naturally. Once sunny masters repause's sorcery, taking her shadow won't make her immortal like the others. She won't be able to enter the 4th nightmare with unlimited lives.
