Chapter 2552: King of Nothing

The Eastern Quadrant had been one of the four great strongholds of humanity once. It was perhaps not as large and populous as the Northern Quadrant, but hundreds of millions of people still called it home...

Now, mere years after Antarctica had fallen, Australia itself was on the verge of being consumed by the powers of Corruption. The difference between the two was that while the Southern Quadrant had fallen to an endless flood of monsters birthed by the Chain of Nightmares, the Eastern Quadrant was being devoured by a single, insidious Nightmare Creature.

The Great Terror, Skinwalker.

Of all the horrors brought to Earth by the Nightmare Spell, this one was perhaps the most harrowing — not because it was the most powerful, but simply because it could mimic human behavior almost flawlessly and blend in with mundane people without raising any suspicion.

And even worse than that, the Skinwalker had shown a frightening ability to learn and adapt with terrible speed.

Its first appearance had gone unnoticed, and by the time the powers watching over humanity learned of its existence, it was already too late. The Skinwalker had infected countless cities in the Eastern Quadrant, embedding its vessels among the mundane population, the Awakened warriors, the government forces, and even the private armies of the local Legacy clans. There were few of these vessels, at first — maybe because the Nightmare Creature was biding its time and learning the ways of humanity before starting to spread like a plague. Some of them were eventually hunted down and destroyed... but not all of them. Even if the Sovereigns reigned supreme, they could not fight a Nightmare Creature that they could not find.

And their forces had been pulled away to fight an internal war, regardless.

By the time the original Sovereigns had fallen and Changing Star of the Immortal Flame took the throne of mankind, it was already too late. Humanity managed to prevent the Skinwalker from spreading to other Quadrants or consuming the human settlements in the Dream Realm, but the sinister fiend became too deeply rooted in Australia.

A single settlement fell first, all of its citizens becoming vessels of the eerie Nightmare Creature. Then, another one, and then another one still. Before too long, the whole Quadrant had been washed over by the spreading plague, and a full-scale war against the Skinwalker commenced in earnest. That war was not going well for the humans. The Eastern Quadrant Siege Capital still stood, and they still controlled most of the coastal area facing the Indian Ocean. However, the inner expanse of the continent and its southern reaches were fully conquered by the Skinwalker. And almost every day, the Great Terror took more lives, gained more vessels, and conquered more land.

The spread of the horrid plague seemed unstoppable. The humans were slowly retreating toward EQSC, losing one city after another — in fact, they had not been routed entirely only because Changing Star herself took to the battlefield as often as the laws governing the waking world allowed her, pushing the Skinwalker back from time to time.

But even with her support and with the best Saints of humanity joining the war effort, the Nightmare Creature continued to spread. Eventually, it became clear that the continent could not be saved — so, a grievous decision to evacuate it was made, and the Dream Gate opened in the heart of EQSC to take the refugees away, the naval convoys arriving to ferry them north.

The arrival of Soul Reaper Jet and the Night Garden helped stabilize the situation. A fragile balance was achieved in the Eastern Quadrant... for a short while.

The Skinwalker had taken millions upon millions upon millions of vessels by then. Among them were millions of humans, both mundane and Awakened... but there were millions of lesser Nightmare Creatures from the wild reaches of the continent, as well. No one really knew how many vessels the Nightmare Creature possessed now, and even if someone did, there was no way to defend the vast expanse of the continent from that terrible, ever-growing force.

And worst of all...

Both the academics and the diviners in the service of the Human Domain were unanimous in their suspicion that the Skinwalker was on the verge of evolving — either to the Cursed Rank or to the Titan Class... or perhaps both.

If it did, neither Soul Reaper nor the Night Garden would be able to hold it back anymore, and the entire population of the Eastern Quadrant, including the military forces of humanity concentrated there, would be consumed without having time or opportunity to evacuate.

The situation was dire...

And it was in that dire crisis that something odd began to happen.

There were isolated reports at first, then a wave of them, all saying the same things — that the Skinwalker was behaving strangely. As if something was attacking the terrifying Nightmare Creature from within, fighting for control of its vessels.

..That something was Mordret, the Prince of Nothing — the banished son of the King of Swords, the traitor to the fallen Clan Valor, and the executioner of the House of Night. Mordret had gained a lot in the Palace of Imagination, even if he lost a powerful new vessel of his own at the very end. He managed to retrieve his only weakness and escape the wrath of the Lord of Shadow relatively unscathed. However, that was not enough... not nearly enough, considering what was coming and how little time he had left to prepare for the approaching calamity. So, he decided to play one last, desperate gambit — something for which he had been preparing for a long time.

He, who was nearly immortal, put his life on the line and left himself no way out but success.

Mordret challenged the Great Terror to a soul duel.

There, in the dreadful darkness of the Skinwalker's profane soul, surrounded by the unfathomable expanse of Corruption, Mordret fought the eldritch Nightmare Creature tooth and nail, not holding anything back. His own soul was mangled and poisoned, but he tore pieces of it out and continued to fight.

And in the process, he did something else. His own daring, impossible act of defiance. Ever since becoming a Saint, Mordret had been struggling to maintain his sense of self. Unwilling to become a demented and broken thing like the Soul Stealer, he limited the use of his Transcendent Ability to only separating himself to inhabit a handful of vessels — a dozen or two, at most.

Now, he abandoned all caution.

Mordret needed to splinter a fragment of his soul to create an independent incarnation, so now, he shattered himself into a million pieces. He, who had always dreamed of becoming whole again, tore himself apart completely — that was the only way for him to defeat the Skinwalker. Because with each vessel Mordret stole from him, the power of the eerie fiend lessened a little.

In a sense, trying to keep his shattered self from crumbling was as difficult as battling the Great Terror... no, maybe more so.

That was the limit he had to overcome. Mordret's and the Skinwalker's horrid, relentless, unseen battle lasted for a long while. Hours turned into days, and days turned into weeks. Each of his soul cores had been destroyed and reforged anew countless times. The pool of power he had absorbed in Mirage City slowly exhausted itself, and then ran dry completely.

That was when Mordret finally broke through his limit.

He destroyed the Skinwalker and took over all of its vessels — millions of human vessels, and millions of Nightmare Creatures.

And somewhere along the way...

Mordret became the seventh Sovereign born from humanity, and the third one to attain Supremacy without the help of the Nightmare Spell.

However, his Domain was unlike those of the other six.

That was because Mordret had no Citadels, no territories, and no subjects. His reign was not founded on anything, and he ruled nothing... only himself.

With his millions of vessels, Mordret was like a nation in and of himself — self-sufficient and self-reliant, depending on nobody, beholden to nothing.

With no weaknesses the Dreamspawn could exploit.

As the sun rose above the devastated Eastern Quadrant, the world welcomed a new Sovereign. Of course, his emergence caused a great stir among other powers governing the dying world — now, unexpectedly, they needed to decide how to deal with the new king.

The King of Nothing.

Mordret's ascension Is so forced how did he know about natural ascension in the first place It makes sense that he might be aware of the possibility, but how did he figure out the exact method? Sunny only discovered it through the skeleton

literally everyone in the story knows changing star and the lord of shadows are natural supremes

deadass they watched it happen, eventually word would have reached mordret, evidenced by the fact that he knew sunny was a sovereign when they met in the great mirror

I find Mordret's ascension reasonable, I just hoped his ascension would force him to face his own flaws, but ah well, ig that's for another time.

So real, ppl complaining how he survived so long, long enough for him to become supreme- isn't that js the same thing happened with nephis and sunny? As if they didn't went through hell to achieve that rank. He's divine, he's fated to reach higher rank🤷🏻‍♀️

The only issue here is that IT'S SO RUSHED. We js got time skip of his ascension ugh

In my opinion, this novel has been steadily declining. At the beginning, I saw it as a top 3 story, but now it keeps slipping lower in my personal ranking.

The drop really started after the third Nightmare arc. Only in some of the more recent chapters did we see a few bright spots, but overall, the consistency has gone down.

A few key issues stand out:

    1. Mordret and Natural Ascension
How exactly does Mordret know about Natural Ascension? It makes sense that he might be aware of the possibility, but how did he figure out the exact method? Sunny only discovered it through the skeleton and later taught Nephis. The logic here feels inconsistent.

    2. The Author’s Treatment of Mordret
The author keeps forcing Mordret’s survival, even when the natural flow of the story suggested he should have been killed earlier — particularly in Mirage City. That would have been a fitting conclusion: Sunny discovering his method by eliminating Mordret’s other identity.

Some might argue that the other Mordret is “innocent,” but let’s be honest: Sunny himself killed the man who simply learned his true name. So why the hesitation here? Sunny, who always claims he “wouldn’t kill someone without reason,” has already proven he will kill when humanity’s survival requires it. Mordret is a far greater threat — letting him live feels forced.

    3. Contradictions in Sunny’s Choices
If Sunny really sees Mordret as a potential ally (and source for info about the moon guy) for humanity, then why hasn’t he approached the “Moon guy” (who is also framed as a possible ally and amybe have a deal with him?)? The logic is inconsistent, and it makes Sunny’s character feel contradictory.

this novel is going bad again

Well, I partially agree with you about Mordred, the main antagonist's survival defies logic and common sense. I don't know how Mordred has learned how to become sovereign without experiencing nightmares. It should have been something unknown to everyone besides Sunny and Nephis.

But Author-san wants that Mordred survive and become the sole antagonist that would put Sunny to shame until the end.

Though I wonder how he managed to steal the Castellan's power without Sunny or Effie finding out? Through which means? How did he reach the Castellan? Did he parasite Effie? Or Sunny? That's the only way I think of.

Moreover, I find it strange that this ellipse is used to close the arc and make Mordred the King. Well, I don't mind him being a king, obviously, I think that he was fated to be one, but that's how things have been rushed and without any explanation, which makes everything a mess.

Maybe Mordred will become the next Mary-Sue? :D (it's a joke!)

1 - Mordret probably saw it all through reflection bs.
2 - uhh, fate? All with true names are beholden to some fate, now that Sunny lost his, he is probably influenced to avoid intervening with other fated's fate.
3 - ah, yes, of course, let's befriend the unknown supreme who plotted against Immortal flame with his pals, sure nothing bad will happen, better stick with the devil you know.

I can only imagine this is due to some webnovel contract requiring the author to write a minimum number of chapters before the novel's end, which results in a lot of filler and unnecessary arcs. It's hard for me to understand the shift in tone and quality after Ariel's Tomb. I thought we'd get a darker Sunny here, but it turned into a romance very quickly. If you stop reading the first few parts of the novel, it's impossible to recognize; it hooks you and feels like an addictive drug to read the next chapter, while now you read and think, "Meh, that's it." Certainly a curse for any novel that runs for a long time and the author doesn't take breaks.

      1. I mean it wasn't really a secret that they ascended without going into a NM. Morderet is smart, he probably tried many things until he found the way.

      2. Yeah this I lowk agree with but that's because Morderet is his favorite

      3. Morderet is a known villian while Asterion/Moon guy is unknown villian. Might as well ally with the known one to defeat the unknown one.

1 Anvil knew about natural ascension and Mordret stayed for years with Asteron who knew much more than Anvil + everyone knows that the Shadow Lord and the Change Star became sovereigns through natural ascension

2 Mordret is still important to the story and killing a character who has a divine aspect related to the slave in a small arc is the height of pettiness+ He only killed Sunny Harper in the second volume because he would have known his name and made him a slave and because of the alcohol he couldn't think straight and throughout the story Sunny never killed an innocent person

3 Why the hell is he trying to get close to Asteron? Are you stupid? This guy is a sovereign whose goals are unknown, and Mordret said he's completely abandoned his human side.

1: Mordret could have just figured it out lmao, it’s not like a secret and it’s never been explicitly stated that Nephis hasn’t said how she ascended
2: Sunny killed the innocent man who learned his true name, and felt VERY BAD about it, he’s not some badass “I’ll kill innocents to protect myself…” cringe ass hero, plus Mordret is a divine aspect wielder like Sunny and Nephis, idk what you expected
      3: Asterion’s clearly f#cking evil don’t screw with me.

Although i dont agree with your reasons 100%, i do think this novel is declining.
Everything seems forced. The author dedicated two useless minigame arcs to get sunny his weaver linage and 'solve' effies and night's issues that prevent them from becoming supreme, and now this with mordert.
Along with the chapters becoming increasingly diluted and information being repeated, among other things, it fell of.

    Quote: Nyfeirg
To me, I find it ridiculous because it means that Mordred is near omniscient and omnipotent. He can be everywhere at any time. He was already near-immortal before, and now he is virtually invincible, and nobody can counter his power. I find this character slightly like a Marie Sue-like character, and the author made this character survive everything. In the end, I wonder whether we shouldn't replace Sunny with Mordred because of that (it's a joke, obviously).

And because I don't know how his power works, I have difficulty understanding some things. For example, when he exploded after having seen Weaver's reflection, how did he achieve to steal the power of Castellan if he couldn't retrieve it with his main body? I mean, does that mean his vessels are connected to his main body everywhere? (So he can be everywhere anytime)

Ya I think G3 should just change the protagonist or write another book from Modret pov...he can be the 2nd Fang yuan

I bet After Modret recovers from his fight with the Skinwalker...he is stronger than Sunny at least...But nah he can't Defeat Nephis... The only thing holding Nephis back is lives of the people...but they are also a part of her domain... Nephis vs Modret...Nephis wins...

Have you been reading dreamspawn slave?? Sunny is stronger than nephis by a significant margin, the only attack nephis has that could pose even the slightest threat to sunny is the nuke and sunny can easily avoid that, it was literally proven when nephis struggled immensely against what was it a cursed demon? meanwhile sunny has already beaten a cursed tyrant, nephis literally outright stated that she was not the lord of shadows, she could not become the opposite will of something, thats something only sunny can do and it gives him a huge advantage, even in terms of raw firepower we havent seen sunny in all his glory, the sunny that fried a cursed tyrant didnt even have all his incarnations and wasnt even prepared, and he did that all after dealing with multiple cursed rank creatures, and even then mordret cant even engage in a soul battle with sunny because he will probably lose, sunny is basically immune to mordret and mordret knows that which is why he only targets things around sunny not sunny himself, meanwhile nephis has no way of defending herself in a soul battle, im tired of the nephis glazers, sunny absolutely mauls nephis and mordret likely doesnt have a chance in direct combat

The puppeteer was a physically weak tyrant who relied entirely on his followers and his mental abilities.

All of his followers were killed or lost control while Sunny was completely immune to his ability due to being a Stone Saint at the time.

Sunny himself admitted that the Weaver Scheme was the only thing that made him win the Game of Death.

that doesnt diminish the fact its a cursed tyrant at all, weavers schemes whatnot sunny still faced a cursed tyrant and came out victorious, you cant seriously think mordret beats sunny

and the reason he was a stone saint is because of shadow dance, that is part of his arsenal meaning its his personal power, that doesnt diminish the feat at all

and even then it STILL doesnt change my point whatsoever, nephis barely beat a cursed demon, current sunny wouldnt wven struggle

Alright, I'm expecting Sunny's new weave to be somewhat overpowered to balance things out. At least let him use 5th or maybe 6th step of shadow dance freely without worrying about loosing himself. Remember Mordret can create reflextions one rank above his own which means he can create 7 sacred rank reflextions and unlike Sunny's sacred rank shades which loose almost 50% of their power after becoming shades, they will be in their full glory.

Why do y'all think this is an asspull ? Mordret is the perfect counter to the skinwalker. The biggest problem about the skinwalker is it's numbers. Mordert took it on a one on one soul duel. Cutting off it's biggest advantage... it's numbers. So he beat it one on one, and took over it's body.

We saw with Effie, one shot a one of them. skinwalkers on their own aren't that powerful. Evident by she blew it up with her spear from 100s of miles away. Not to mention, Mordret had to sacrifice his soul cores numerous time. And rebuild them by using the essence he got form one of the nine.

All the evidence and pierces of the puzzle have been laid out.
