Chapter 2545: Reflections upon Reflections

Sunny and Effie rushed down the long spiral staircase, jumping over several stone steps with each stride. The great tower shook around them as Mordret, Morgan, and Saint clashed on its roof. Sunny did not know who would win in that fight or for how long the two women would be able to hold the Prince of Nothing back, so there was no time to waste.

Effie seemed to understand that, as well.

"I just have one question!"

She failed to make a tight enough turn and slammed into a wall, using it to direct her momentum.

"How the hell are we supposed to find the Castellan?!"

Sunny was cursing the height of the great tower and the length of the stairs when he heard the question. His muscles had already been burning because of the climb up, and now, he had to descend the same way in a rush.

'Where to find the Castellan, indeed...'

At the moment, he was going over everything that Mordret had told him and trying to understand which of his words were true, and which were a lie.

Mordret was a frighteningly skilled manipulator, and he knew how to masterfully mix truth and deceit to control his targets. In hindsight, he had to be - humans naturally rejected anyone who was not like them, and so, he would have had to read their thoughts and emotions flawlessly if he wanted to fit in. Even before that, he would have become adept at reading emotions while growing up next to Anvil and Asterion.

That said, Sunny did not think that Mordret had lied about countless things here in Mirage City - just about the most important things. That was because he had needed Sunny and Effie to know the true state and function of the Palace of Imagination in order to use them as proxy agents against the Castellan. He had definitely exaggerated how dangerous the Castellan was to anyone who wasn't him, somewhat, while at the same time understating how rough a form the Castellan was in.

The flood that destroyed Mirage City... was most likely a manifestation of that ancient reflection failing to endure the pressure of having to incorporate conflicting desires into its grand illusion without the guidance of the Castle Master.

The Castellan was breaking down, just like the northern dam had, and the illusion of Mirage City was breaking down with it.

So... where would Sunny find the Castellan? Most of Mirage City was gone, now. Only the tallest buildings remained above the water... and the Castle, of course. There was a slim chance that the Castellan was in one of the remaining buildings, but Sunny doubted that. No, the ancient reflection would be somewhere here, in the stronghold of its former master.

But where?

It was not the throne room or the roof of the great tower. It was not the courtyard, either. The Castle was vast, and there were plenty of halls in it...

Sunny glanced at Effie.

"You know the layout of Bastion pretty well, right? This replica of the Castle seems smaller, but there should be some similarity. How similar are they?"

By then, they had almost reached the throne room.

"Pretty similar!"

Sunny nodded.

"So, how would one get to the Great Mirror?"

Effie almost stumbled.

"The Great Mirror?"

There was the true Great Mirror, standing in the middle of the Hall of Imagination in True Bastion. But there was also the false Great Mirror, hidden deep inside the mountain under the illusory Bastion - that one, the rulers of Clan Valor and later Effie had used to control the Component of the great Citadel that allowed it to travel between reality and illusions.

The false Great Mirror led to True Bastion, while the real Great Mirror led to the Palace of Imagination...

But there was a Castle in Mirage City, as well.

So, wouldn't it be natural to assume that there would be a third version of the Great Mirror here, as well?

'Just how deep does this infinity mirror go...'

Effie remained motionless for a moment, looking around with a bewildered expression, then nodded resolutely.

"Follow me!"

They rushed to an alcove behind the throne, where another door was hidden behind a tapestry. The Castle itself was a labyrinth, but Effie was able to navigate it with at least some level of confidence - she had been ruling Bastion for more than a year, after all, so this was a replica of her seat of power.

"Where is it, where is it..."

Soon, they stopped near an unassuming wall. Looking around, Effie pulled on a metal torch holder fastened to the wall, then turned it slightly.

A section of the wall suddenly receded and then slid sideways, revealing a dark passage.

Effie smiled faintly.

"Still works"

However, in the next moment, both of them froze.

"What... what is this?"

As soon as the secret passage opened, a peculiar sound reached their ears.

It was quiet and subtle, as if coming from a great distance, but also impossible to ignore due to how out of place it seemed.

Sunny was pretty sure that what they heard... was music.

It was a clear sound of strings being plucked to sing a haunting, melancholic melody. They glanced at each other, not knowing how to react.

"Let's... proceed.”

Effie nodded, just as bewildered and disturbed as Sunny.

They entered the secret passage, traversed a maze of dusty stone corridors, and reached a deep well leading to the depths of the mountain. A narrow staircase was clinging to its wall - they descended it without wasting any time, knowing that somewhere far above, Morgan and Saint were fighting Mordret with their lives on the line.

The deeper into the depths of the mountain they descended, the clearer and louder the forlorn melody became.

Until it filled their ears completely, making them both feel like they were lost in it.

Soon enough, they reached the bottom of the well and found themselves standing in front of towering gates.

Sunny held his breath for a moment, then took a step forward and pushed the gates open.

Out there behind them stood a vast underground chamber... much too vast for the scale of the mountain, clearly greater than the space it was supposed to take up. An immense mirror was standing in its heart, towering at least a hundred metres in height. It was covered by a sheet of thin black fabric, which moved slightly in a ghostly wind.

And in front of the Mirror, sitting on the stone floor with his back to them...

Sunny and Effie finally beheld the Castellan.

Who could blame Sunny? Asterion’s so terrifying Mordret designated the cohort as meat shields; delaying for a time but ultimately incapable of killing Asterion. All in All? I forgot Mordret had an affinity to Nothingness and didn’t consider Asterion…well….
that beyond Sunny’s and Nephis means .-.

Betting this is Mirage themselves, or at least a reflection of them. This continues the trend of Sunny witnessing the true appearance of each Daemon, Hope in the 2nd Nightmare, Nether in underworld river, Weaver in most memories, Ariel in the chess game, and Oblivions body in 3rd Nightmare. Only Repose is missing if my guess is true

Bruh, after 2500 chapters I’m convinced I’ve found Sunny’s second major flaw: the moment he’s around anything with a divine aspect, his IQ drops by like 80%. Like… how the hell did he not have Mordret chained up and on the verge of death? This is Sunny we’re talking about — I would’ve totally expected him to literally tie Mordret to Saint or Effie while cutting off both his legs. You’re staring at the flaw of one of your worst enemies, a guy who literally played you, and you just… ignore him??? Can you even imagine Klein pulling something like that in front of Amon? Nah. This just feels like making the MC look dumb so Mordret can stick around longer…

Well, actually, it's not that difficult if you think about it. They both have a common goal: to eliminate Asterion, but neither of them trusts the other, so obviously they'll try to deceive each other. Sanny knew this very well, he just didn't think the deception would happen so quickly. Sunny himself was also deceiving him, in fact, he said that after Asterion, he would use the other Morderd to blackmail the Prince of Nothing.

I really don't get all the hate towards mordy. He's been a really stellar friend and cohortmate towards Sunny and gang.
Sure he may talk like a vile villain arch nemesis, but he just talks the talk and never walks the walk. He's even saved. Sunny and friends on several occasions.
      7
From the very beginning, mordy kept Sunny sane when he was falling on marvelous mimic, rescued sunny and Cassie when they were imprisoned in clan valor. Filled in for cohort when they needed a hand in their Saint ascension nightmare. Disrupted the balance during the sovereign war, giving Sunny and neph a chance to ascend. etc. ect. Not even mentioning how much helpful both of him has been to Sunny on this arc. His contributions are too many. His badmouth talk is cheap

Chained? Other than saint, effie, sunny and flaw mordret are mundane. Saint attracted the majority of the fire, the group could not have gone so far so quickly without her in the thick of it. Effie, again, is mundane; a highly athletic but still mundane person chaining her to flaw mordret would kill them both(unless plot armor) same goes for sunny.

Mordret and Sunny (before Mordret’s deception) was trying to strike a deal, ignoring how foolish it would be to tie flaw mordret to the yacht, with the deal in mind and them facing the Castellan how important would mobility be right now? How could they dare chain Mordrets flaw infront of his eyes like so?

Lord of the Mysteries and Shadow Slave are two different powers. If powers like Amon existed I doubt the story would go in this direction and Sunny would have an equally different decision.

Your comments cute tho! If simple! If only Shadow Slave was as simple.

First off, I was talking about tying up Mordret’s defect (totally mundane and defenseless) to Saint, for example (who’s at Awakened level or higher), or something along those lines. What I mean is, it makes zero sense that he didn’t keep it under threat for one simple reason everyone seems to be forgetting… SUNNY IS RIGHT NOW WAY STRONGER THAN MORDRET!! He’s a Supreme, and Mordret’s just a Saint. Sure, we didn’t know Mordret was at the level of a Master, but in the end it doesn’t matter because his defect would still be in Saint’s hands.
So what I’m saying is: why the hell is Sunny making a deal as if they’re equals??? He should be the one holding all the power. Like, can you imagine if it was the other way around—Mordret as a Supreme and Sunny as a Saint? Hah! Mordret would never be dumb enough to make a one-to-one deal with Sunny

Mordy s deal was presented as such. As a saint to sovereign., he surrendered and submitted both the two of himself to the mercy of both sovereigns. He only withdrew it the moment when sunny tried to kill him for his defiance. Compared to the previous sovereigns, whom Sunny, Nephis and the other saints repeatedly showed defiance back then were really merciful
          7
Lets put the shoe on the other again. Switch roles of sunny and mordy, mordy being mundane with 1 bullet left, awakened sunny just dodged a bullet, do you think Sunny wouldn't kill him or beat up his face with his own gun on the spot?

True. Sunny letting Mordrets flaw go so easily really doesn’t fit someone usually so meticulous. Sunny saying “I Just Knew Something Wasn’t Right!” Isn’t enough to explain his oversight but I can also say this highlights how suppression in Mirage’s Realm works and the advantage Mordret had with his affinity.

As you said; Mordret regained up to Master level of power, subsequently, his level of thinking compared to everyone else (except for Saint) currently mundane is processing way more.
With all the distractions Sunny catching on while the others were still flabbergasted could also highlight how fast his mind is while he’s mundane and if he had more time to think I’m sure he would’ve figured out his source of unease

but this arc has been filled with time constraints; from the castellan bringing their nightmares true, Asterions return and Mordrets himself also hastening the group Sunny’s hands had just been full

          Shame

Question ..I undrstand Saints affinity to Shadow from Sunny and her affinity to darkness from Nether...but what the relationship between her and tge whit e mist aka nothing infacts what the relationship between nether and the nothing....and whats the relationship between betwwen the others and Nothing and since they were created by the demon of imagination....what the relationship between her and nothing

And how much of athreat is Asterion tht Modret just believes Sunny and Nephis can only buy time....he wasnt stronger then Broken Sword and needed help and a suprise attack to beat him so even if they know nothing about him ...and with his amazing mind powers and nightmare spawn nature his power cant be exaggerated like that hes not divine in aspect maybe not even sacred and hes still a supreme in rank ... they are both titans,Sunny beat a Cursed Tyrant with1/7th of his fullstrength thats broken .I believed if Asterion returned hed probably see hes outmatched and hide till they challenged the 5th nightmare so hed fight the rest of the cohort

I believe that Asterione has a divine and powerful appearance, otherwise it would be inexplicable how it can devour more divine lineages, since in theory it can only have one. I don't think a supreme or sacred aspect can do it. In reality, I believe that broken sword and sky of the smile both have two aspects of divine rank. Of the smile of the sky because it was the unia receiving a real name in the first nightmare like Sanny and Napiph. Sword broken because of his monstrous power. As for Saint, the reason for the link with the "nothing" has been said by Euristi of the nine, he said to Sanny that his shadows are incomplete he is missing the real definition to be of individuals. The creatures of nothing like the others are creatures that they hesitated once before stopping there and Carcano to consume existing creatures such as flame creatures and corrupt. So personally I think Saint we are absorbing the essence of nothing to differentiate an individual in itself.

Mirage used the Nothing as a component to create the reflections and the others. The Nether used the Nothing to create the Stone Knights.

You read the book with your eyes closed. Asterion poses a threat because his aspect abilities, his domain, and the nature of his power are so powerful. You're being fooled by the great power of the divine aspects, but you've forgotten that in battle, that doesn't matter much. Remember when Sunny was just a sleeping beast, fighting monsters and fallen demons? How many normal awakened beings kill creatures far stronger than themselves? Broken Sword wasn't weak by the standards of a divine aspect; on the contrary, he was too strong. They only defeated him because Asterion was there (Morgana also has a common aspect, at most transcendent or supreme, and had the strength of a Titan Mordret). Asterion was banished to the moon of the waking realm, separated from his domain and suppressed by the dominion of an unholy one. However, he could still influence both the waking world and the dream realm.

Thats where your so wrong..u definitely read it with your eyes closed..it divine aspects do matter in battle u compared morgan to a titan modret even while forgetting that Morgan lost that battle several times in fact Modret with a Utility Aspect, infact Morgan ,Effie,Jet(a supreme aspect),Kai ,Naeve and others your talking about the strongest non divine saints in the world (excluding song sisters ) and they all died gruesomely everyday . Thats with Terrain advantage and Preptime...thats how dangerous divine aspect are they cant be held back within their class u speak of Fighting above rank Nephis took out a Fallen terror do u think any non divine could do it..didnt they try,First lord, second lord ,Gaunlag, whats the difference she was a divine aspect and a devil at that time.Sunny took on 7 saints at4/7 of his power while holding back not to kill them and those were scions and daughters of Song best of the best....so what do u mean ...being divine doesnt apply in combat....They proven otherwise severally.... Broken sword fell to asterion and the rest i understand sneak attack. BUT DO U BELIEVE LOS or even Supreme Sunny can fall to sneak attack from Jet ,Effie,Kai Even if you throw in Morgan ,Seishan and Revel (assuming theyre of the same rank) under any circumstance...and how dangerous can his aspect be really think about it .....Modret can travel through any reflection in kilometers and take the body of anyone he wants ,and as a Saints he could make several Supreme Titan reflections OMG....(as a Saint) Nephis could detonate her core and destroy an Island as a master as well as scare a cursed tyrant as a Saint. Anvil couldnt singlehandedly kill condemnation..but Sunny killed tge puppeteer with 1/7 of his power so tell me how dangerous is Asterions aspect or nature whwn he was scared of broken sword. Who as amazing as he was even 3 of him wouldnt beat Nephis at the same rank now she has all of humanity as her domain and Sunny to add to the mix there is no logic where hes a threat unless G3 cooks something out of nowhere...which he will ...sorry for the epistles
