Chapter 2517: Trust

Everything good had to come to an end. And so, Sunny's and Effie's last meal in the desolate, but cozy diner had come to an end as well.

They parted ways under the torrential rain that threatened to swallow Mirage City. It seemed unwise to separate while the Castellan was hunting them, but they had to keep playing their roles. Effie had to return to her family... more importantly, they wanted to split the team spying on them in two, so that escaping its surveillance was easier later.

Sunny glanced at Effie and lingered for a few moments just before they went their own ways.

“You... be careful.”

Effie met his gaze calmly and smiled after a long stretch of silence.

"You too, partner.”

With that, she was gone.

Sunny remained motionless for a while, then inhaled deeply and began walking. His PTV had been destroyed, the subway system of Mirage City was paralyzed due to the flooding, and there were no taxis around because of the congested roads. So, he headed for the nearest bus stop.

As Sunny walked and then rode on a crowded bus, he kept thinking about what Effie had said.

*Surrender yourself to the person you love... trust them completely...*

*And have faith in them, knowing that they will not abuse the power you gave them.*

Sunny scoffed.

It was easy for Effie to say.

But actually...

Maybe she was the best person to say it. After all, out of all his closest friends, Effie was the only one who had a family. She had a husband whom she loved, and who loved her back. They had built a life together and were raising a child — a Transcendent child, at that. It could not have been easy to care for Little Ling... in fact, it must have been uniquely challenging.

No one had ever faced such a challenge before, and yet, the two of them conquered all the obstacles side by side. That must have taken them an immense amount of trust in each other, and judging by how radiant and happy Little Ling was, they were doing a good job.

However, that was not even what qualified Effie to give Sunny that piece of advice. There was a different reason, as well.

It was easy to forget because of how vibrant and full of vitality Effie was, and because of how vivacious and tremendously vigorous the alluring image of Raised By Wolves was... but she had not always been the tantalizing picture of health and potency she was today.

Effie had spent more than half of her life confined to a wheelchair and barely able to move... in a world that had no patience or mercy for anyone, let alone people whom it considered defective and useless, like her. It was neither cheap nor easy to keep someone like her alive, and her family had not been affluent — she had a healthy sibling, as well. Taking care of a sick child was a heavy burden, and in the end, it had more or less brought her family to ruin. They loved and cared for her... but they must have resented her quite a lot in their darker moments, as well.

They had all the reasons to abandon her, but they never did. Effie was only alive today because her family had stubbornly refused to give up and instead took care of her, going against ruthlessly pragmatic societal norms at a great personal cost.

She had been completely and utterly powerless and at their mercy, depending on them for her most basic needs... more so than Sunny had ever depended on anyone, Shadow Bond or not.

So, she knew a thing or two about trust... about loving someone who held power over your life in their grasp, and trusting that they would never abuse it.

Exiting the bus and diving into the rain, Sunny sighed.

Sure, Effie did not have all the context — he did not explain to her what the Shadow Bond was and how it worked in detail. However, that might have been for the best. Maybe... maybe she saw something that he had failed to see, distracted by the mystical runes and a decade worth of scathing, complicated emotions.

Maybe at the root of it all, it was not about a dead god and the shadows he had cast. It was not about a Divine Aspect or its Innate Ability. It was not even about fate, or lack thereof.

It was simply about trust.

Or maybe not.

'What makes one a slave, anyway?'

If a tyrant put a collar on the neck of a powerless man or woman, and then forced them to serve him, they were enslaved. Theirs was a pitiful fate.

But if a knight gave an oath of loyalty to a noble monarch, swearing to serve them faithfully until the day they die, they were noble. Theirs was a virtuous life of esteem and respect.

Both of these paths led to servitude, but one was a curse, while the other was a blessing. There were other kinds of devotion, as well.

'I guess, in the end...'

It all came down to choice.

It was choice that separated a slave from a knight, a curse from a blessing.

And Sunny...

Sunny had to make a choice.

He was in a position to make a choice. Unlike a slave, who had all their choices taken from them.

'Damnation.'

It was late at night when Sunny finally made it to his destination.

He did not return home, though.

Instead, he was standing in front of a moderately affluent apartment complex, checking something on the cracked screen of his primitive communicator.

"Should be the place..."

Effie had gone home, but the Devil Detective... the Devil Detective was not going to be stopped by something as prosaic as being suspended and stripped of his authority as a police officer. He was still going to continue the investigation.

That was why Sunny had pulled some strings, utilizing a few contacts from the Devil Detective's memory, and received an address.

Soon enough, he was standing in front of a particular door, pressing the buzzer.

The man who opened the door glanced at him with a bit of wariness and a bit of confusion.

“Detective Sunless? To what do I owe the pleasure? Is... is there news about Mr. Mordret?"

It was none other than the Other Mordret's personal assistant — the person who knew the most about where the CEO of the Valor Group went and what he did.

“I wanted to ask you a few questions... and yes, there is."

Sunny gave the man an amicable smile.

And then punched him in the stomach.

sunny please, dont forget who you were, isnt there nothing more pathetic than a slave who begins to trust his slaver?, didnt you call the golden knight guy a hypocrite?, he served Anvil via oath and committed atrocities that you despised and called him out on?, you yourself have said Nephis is on the fine line between benevolent ruler and tyrant, hell id say she IS a tyrant, and regardless of how she was years ago sending you away to "help you" by robbing you of choice, i hope that when he obtaind nethers weave, the demon of choice, or many shadow weave, he will come to his senses, or at least remember that he doesnt NEED to choose being enslaved however he sugarcoats it in his mind, i trust G3 but I will lose my sanity and throw my phone into a lake if Sunny actually goes back to that dynamic where Nephis "gives him choice by her phrasing" didnt she use it twice and didnt you feel violated?, please please man, i need the Trecherous one back somewhat, not this Sunny thats lost sight of his core beleif

Sunny reasoned that way because he's a sociopath.
However, he did almost everything in the novel because he's a sociopath.
      And I believe he's still a sociopath.
And despite the fact that I believe you're a Revered GU fan-sociopath...
I agree that I wouldn't trust anyone with that much power over me.
      Because I'm also a sociopath.
Well, trust issues vs full disclosure and happiness is an interesting topic for G3 to raise.

I agree with you my guy.
Also with the argument that he had with nephis recently tells me that it would be a really bad choice being bound by the shadow bond again.

It’s really such a dilemma. I believe it’s really for the best that they’re together, but in what form? With or without his fate there’s massive pros and cons for Sunny here (and Neph too)…I agree that I’d never let someone hold that much literal power over me willingly; I can’t even imagine acquiescing to that, but he’s in a position where the love of his life does not and cannot ever understand fully why she loves him — he’s living the benefits and missing the foundation, it’s such a moral wrench in the thought process

After reading this chapters I remembered Sunny's own words at the beginning of this novel.

There is nothing more pathetic than a slave who begins to trust his slaver.

    Sunny's fate.........
    It's quite ironic isn't it

The name of the Novel reffers to his Aspect.
He was a Temple Slave and then Shadow Slave.
Once again - Nephis was never his "slaver". She had given him only one command ever.
That what I meant. Formally she was his "Master" but never did anything with this. She even altered the way she spoke to say "if you want"
If you think that "a slave who begins to trust his slaver" has something to do with those two - well, I have nothing to discuss with you.

            Twice.
She's commanded him twice. Both times she believed she was doing the right thing for him.

Sunny needs a master. This much is evident considering that he was originally a temple slave in his first nightmare, then he became a shadow.

The nightmare spell gives rewards or aspects based on how they conquer the nightmare. Neph burnt herself and got the Sungod lineage.

My point is, shadows can't exist without something. So, undoubtedly sunny needs that thing to exist, adding his original temple slave fate, being a Shadow Slave that requires a master is fitting.

It doesn't take away how morbid it is though.
She controls his entirety whether he likes it or not.
She might promise, decide, swear not to use the bond. But it's still ...
One slip, one command and the trust is broken.

She promised not to use it one time, and yet she ended up using it to get him to dismiss a memory.

The possibility of it happening again and again and again is too hard to ignore.

She has her goals and she's shown the capacity to sacrifice anything for it.

I believe that Sunny will agree to the shadow bonds, because they give important bonuses.
    1) The ability to strengthen each other.
    2) The ability to pull Nephys into the shadow.
    3) Sunny will become a shadow that has an owner, which means that in the world of death his soul will not dissipate.

+ Sunny and Nephys from the future for some reason returned to the Tomb of Ariel.

But hope I'm wrong and the author will come up with an unexpected move that will allow us to avoid slavery. Otherwise, I will be incredibly disappointed - spending so many chapters demonstrating the protest of being a weak-willed slave, the problems of inequality in relationships and probably many other things that I have managed to forget will look like a slap in the face, and not the growth of the character above himself.

A knight still has a choice to break his oath . He is not incapable of doing so . A slave forcefully collared might still escape . But shadow bond? You are completely at their mercy . Completely. I mean what if neph goes all tyranical one day ?? What will he do then ? And besides he isn't he fated to kill nephis ? Like all the way back after forgotten shore didn't cassie say she saw a vision of a shadow consuming. a sun ? And cassie went through all this trouble of making sunny fateless. Isn't he going to be better if he has no chains bounding him ?

Oh shit! Here we go again!

Here, Sunny acknowledges that Effie doesn't know the full picture and he still has a lot to contemplate about. However, Effie's words made Sunnys mindset clear up a lot and, he gained a lot of help, clarity from what she said. So, we should let Sunny develop his character more; and let G3 cook for the time being.

There's too much accent on choice. Nether was The Demon of Choice, and Sunny haven't got the part of Weavers' lineage from him yet, so I guess that this conflict about should he return his fate or not will be resolved when Sunny tries to get Weave
