Chapter 2355: Empty Vessel

Sunny studied Kai intently, hiding his surprise. He had expected his friend to give a negative answer, of course - after all, he knew Kai too well to think otherwise. And yet the categorical nature of his denial left Sunny rattled.

He leaned back a little, frowning. 'Not… even once?'

Kai shrugged. 'Of course. This freedom you talk about… well, it is an elusive concept, I guess? It changes depending on how you define it. Are we talking about freedom from responsibility, from duty, from having to act on behalf of the others?'

The charming archer smiled softly. 'If so, then I see no reason to regret surrendering it. You seem to regard freedom as something inherently positive, but is it, really? To me, it seems that freedom is neither good nor bad - rather, it is like a transparent, empty vessel. You can fill it with good things or bad things, making it either benign or malignant… but the very act of placing something in the vessel breaks it, and you're not free anymore. So, I guess it's a bit of a paradox.'

He sighed. 'The only way to remain free, in this context, is to leave the vessel empty. And while emptiness is neither benign nor malignant, it is certainly… much sadder than either.'

Kai shook his head. 'The things I filled my vessel with suit me fine. So what if it's not empty and transparent anymore? Why would I want to live a life of emptiness, anyway?'

Sunny slowly shook his head. 'I guess there's no reason, but still… doesn't everyone want to be free?'

Kai considered his question seriously. 'True, people generally long to be free - free to live their lives the way they want, that is, not to be free for the sake of freedom. So what they really want is freedom to make their own choices, not freedom from the consequences of those choices. Even if they become bound to something as a result, unable to do as they want anymore as a result.'

Sunny smiled bitterly. 'Ah… that old nugget of wisdom.' He remained silent for a while, looking into the distance somberly. 'Someone told me once that no one is really free in this world. Everyone is chained to someone, or something… so, the only real freedom there is is the freedom to choose your own chains.' He grinned darkly. 'Of course, I proved this wisdom wrong. Using your metaphor, I put the broken vessel back together and cleaned it until its walls were transparent once again.'

Kai raised an eyebrow. 'Peculiar. You are telling the truth, and yet, what you say can't possibly be true.'

Sunny was surprised. 'Can't possibly be true? How so?'

Noticing his bewilderment, Kai chuckled. 'I mean… I might have some responsibilities, but they are really nothing compared to what you, Sunny, have chosen to bear. You volunteered to fight in the Domain War despite not having a stake in that fight, carried the weight of innumerable lives on your shoulders, faced a Sovereign in battle, and took his crown. Now, you are one of the two guardian angels of humanity… well, possibly a guardian devil is a more fitting term.'

Sunny's face twitched. 'Please don't mention angels when I'm around.'

Kai gave him a strange look, then shrugged and continued. 'What I mean to say is that you used to enjoy infinitely more freedom than I had ever possessed, and you discarded it all in favor of infinitely more responsibility than I will ever bear. So, how can you claim that your vessel is empty?'

He coughed and glanced away. 'Oh, and also, can we steer away from this whole empty vessel metaphor? Honestly, it's not one of my best… lyrics were never my strong suit, but still, I used to be a musician. So it's a bit embarrassing.'

Sunny blinked a couple of times. 'Sure, we can.'

He remained silent for a moment, then shrugged. 'Well, if you put it that way, there does indeed seem to be a contradiction. Actually, it was exactly as you said. I had strived to break free for a very long time, but when I finally did, it came at a cost. And what followed after… was empty and sad, You don't seem to regret surrendering your freedom, but I was full of regret after gaining mine. I was alone and had nothing, so I made a choice to come back and change everything. That, of course, bound me to a lot of things… and now, I feel compelled to see them through.'

Kai smiled. 'Then all is well, no? Since you chose that path yourself.'

Sunny sighed, then rubbed his face tiredly. 'It's not that easy. The path is long and winding… what if following it will rob me of the ability to make choices for myself in the future?'

Kai scratched the back of his head. 'Uh… to be honest, I lost track of all these metaphors a bit, so I am not sure I understand. But if the choice not to have as many choices is your own, then all is good, as well. I think?'

Sunny looked at him and smiled. Then, he laughed. 'So it's okay to be chained as long as I decide to wear shackles myself? All this talk, and we ended up where we began.'

Kai gave him a guilty look. 'Sorry if I wasn't helpful. But, in my defense… I have no idea what you are talking about.'

Sunny gave him a nod and laid back down on his sofa. 'It's alright. I appreciate you humoring me.'

Kai hesitated for a few seconds, then said in a tentative tone: 'Perhaps I could be more helpful if you told me what choice you are contemplating.'

Sunny yawned. 'Oh, it's just… I'm wondering whether I should go bird hunting sometime in the future. That's all.'

Kai opened his mouth, then closed it again. Then, he exhaled slowly. 'I see. Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do.'

After a few moments of silence, he asked: 'Are you going to sleep? If so, I can stand guard. Not that nights here are dangerous.'

Sunny sighed, then shook his head. 'No… I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight. So, I'll do something else instead.'

Kai leaned back. 'What?'

Sunny smiled. 'Being here inside another one of Ariel's harrowing masterpieces has gotten me inspired. So, I am going to do some sorcery.' His smile grew darker. 'I am going to perform sorcery so grand and terrible that even daemons would have been impressed.'

    I love this convo
If g3 can cook sm with rain having powers over true names and stuff
That helps sunny not being a slave but still getting his fate back would be peakest

    Or if g3 wouldn't
[FATED] will surely cook something or someone

Honestly it's the fact that Kai is normal is what makes him exceptional, he didn't have to go back to the front lines, he could have chosen to live his life in abundance never really struggling yet he still chose to pick up the blade and fight for what's right simply because it's the right thing to do, his one of the few purely heroic characters in Shadow Slave and I love him for it.

But you can tell that this is a major problem weighing on Sunny's mind, I'm not sure Kai's words will resonate properly because at the end of the day Sunny is choosing a chain that removes his very ability to even choose in the first place, it's a difficult dilemma.

Why is Sunny still tormented by the choice he made?
I understand that friends have forgotten the first years they spent together, but nevertheless, he got rid of the hated fate and has the opportunity to build a relationship with Nefis without fearing her power over him.
Shared memories, if they cannot be returned, can be created new ones. So the choice already made and Cassie's matchmaking allowed him to get what he wanted.

U underestimate the feelings of emptiness too much. Let’s just say u were in sunny shoe and u met with Nephis after 3NM and of course she Is the love of your life who you would die for but she just forgot about u and treat u like a random stranger ,it wouldn’t break u?

at the very beginning - yes, but when you and your beloved are already brought together (as in this case), the fact of the forgotten past would be simply unpleasant, but nothing more. After all, it is possible without dwelling on it, to build a future. But as you said, perhaps I underestimate this feeling of emptiness.

        And besides, what's the alternative?

To love a person, but not be able to be with him because of the fear that with one (accidental or not) command your beloved, who is also the owner, will ruin your life (and not necessarily by doing something bad, perhaps like at the very beginning when Nefis with good intentions drove Sunny, from the forgotten shore in order to protect him)?

Or when your loved one perceives you as a follower and feels responsible for you for following him (as was once demonstrated by Nephys's attitude towards Cassie, with Sunny I think it was even worse), not allowing him to get together with you

This is the dilemma Sunny is facing.
Of course being Fateless gave me lot of freedom, free from Fated too. But it came at the cost of his friend's memories, and while he has established contact again, it cannot compare to their bonds and memories built thru going thru FS, 2nd and 3rd NMs + Jet who knew him even before he Awakened. Don't forget other characters like Julius, Rain, etc

Let's be real, Sunny isn't a lone wolf depressed mc. He greatly and HUGELY values his loved ones. And this hurts him fckingnggn baddd.
But is it worth getting Shadow Bond back?

          Hence this philosophical debate here

It seems they’re still lost in metaphors and mist, clinging to the illusion that choosing chains is the same as breaking them. How disappointing. They speak of freedom like it’s a riddle to be solved, not a structure to be shattered. They wrap weakness in soft words like "responsibility" and call it virtue, as if surrendering one's will under the banner of choice makes it noble. It does not.

They convince themselves that freedom is some fragile vessel to be filled, that emptiness is sad, and that being bound can be beautiful, but that’s only because they fear what emptiness really demands: clarity, solitude, and the death of all softness. They fear the abyss, so they plant flowers around their chains and say, “I live like this because I chose to.” But a chain chosen is still a chain. They confuse voluntary imprisonment with control. They confuse meaning with mastery. They confuse survival with sovereignty.

Sunny speaks of regret after gaining freedom, Kai, of peace after surrendering it — neither speaks of dominion. Neither understands what it means to be unbound not because the world allowed it, but because one bent the world until the locks snapped.

Freedom is not the right to choose one's burden.
Freedom is walking through fire with nothing left to lose.
They speak of bearing weight for others. I wouldn't be surprised if a Sacred or Divine being carry only one thing: their will.

Just let them debate their vessels and their guilt, then. I wonder if one can achieve Sacredness or Divinity like this.

Following this logic would the right choice for sunny be just living forgotten and dealing with the consequences of being free? Hes too greedy to allow that to be

Then he was never truly free. If he still clings to meaning, purpose, companionship or the avoidance of suffering, then he is not a sovereign, he is a beggar wearing the mask of liberty. To choose obscurity and endure it fully, without complaint or regret, would require more strength than taking up responsibility for others. But he could not bear that weight either.

So he wrapped his greed in ‘duty,’ his fear in ‘purpose,’ and his weakness in ‘nobility.’
He did not return out of choice, he returned because freedom made him see himself, and he flinched. That is not strength. That is camouflage for the fragile. Freedom without the will to face its silence is just another chain — forged from within.

The memories, he can weave them himself. And I think he can kinda sense his legacies. To my knowledge, the spell kinda eases the process, like a translator or facilitator of sorts, but the power is always there like they hinted at several times when he ascends. It's like unlocking a power that was already there. Now, about his fate, I agree, but does Weaver's inheritance have that much importance. Ofc, any little extra power is needed, but isn't his whole legacy a taboo and for a very good reason at that. We don't want invasion from unholy chaos creatures, do we? About Nephis, I feel like he kinda accepted her control, but there's a risk that if she somehow dies, Mordret or the other sovereign might enslave Sunny. Tbh, I don't know. Cos it's clear that the author is going that way and he knows what he's doing

I think besides 5th nightmare the way to make his shadows stronger, saint has been transcendent since Antarctica
