Chapter 2308: Playthings

Sunny really hoped that the piece of Weaver's lineage was not hidden inside the dollhouse. Luckily, he felt nothing but an eerie sense of repulsion when standing in front of the terrifying toy… even though he was neither Fated nor connected to the tapestry of fate anymore, and therefore had lost his supernatural intuition, his senses as a Supreme were still beyond that of a mere mortal. He would have felt something if a daemon's legacy was nearby. More importantly, Blood Weave would have reacted to the presence of another piece of the Demon of Fate.

So, after studying the creepy dollhouse from a safe distance, Sunny shifted his attention elsewhere. He did feel that there was something special about that particular toy… a subtle scent of a daemon, even.

But that scent did not belong to Weaver.

'I think Ariel made this one.'

Kai looked at him, remained silent for a bit, and nodded. 'That very well may be.'

Sunny glanced around the Toy Room, studying various toys. The Song sisters had wandered off, lost in the memories of their childhoods… despite his unease, this place must have been magical for adolescent girls. Especially those who had been orphans once, like Seishan and her sisters. Orphans did not live easy lives in this world. Sunny knew it all too well himself… and just like them, he had been robbed of the joy of having toys as a kid.

Granted, unlike them, he had not been adopted by a powerful Legacy witch. Come to think of it…

Sunny narrowed his eyes and looked at Seishan.

'The Song sisters were adopted. Rain was adopted. What the hell, how come I'm the only one who hasn't been adopted?!'

Where was justice in that?

Kai smiled faintly.

'You have a peculiar expression, Sunny. What are you thinking about?'

Sunny lingered for a few seconds, then shook his head.

'Just thinking about how my life would have changed if someone like Ki Song had taken me off the streets. For better or worse.'

He sighed. 'She really cared about her daughters a lot. However… she also forced the lineage of Beast God on them, as well as infected them with the Nightmare Spell. Were they lucky or unlucky to have met her? I'm not quite sure.'

With that, he glanced around once more and added, his voice somber: 'I'm also not sure if the Jade Queen was lucky to have met the Demon of Dread.'

Kai raised an eyebrow.

'How do you mean?'

Sunny shrugged.

'Well, think about it. Why is there a room full of toys in the depths of the Jade Palace?'

Kai seemed stumped by the question. Sunny remained silent for a bit, then said wistfully: 'It is possible that the Jade Queen had children, or that she simply enjoyed collecting toys. However, it is also possible that she was raised here, in this stone palace. By the Demon of Dread.'

He looked at the figurines wearing pretty dresses, dashing knights cast of precious metals, plush beasts with gemlike eyes… and the intricate dollhouse brimming with the bones of perished dolls.

His expression turned somber. 'Daemons were forbidden from siring offspring, you know. But they all seemed to rebel against that prohibition, in their own ways. Weaver left behind a secret Lineage. Nether created the Stone Saints. Hope lived among humans and cared for them as their own. The Demon of Imagination had her mirrors and illusions…'

Sunny sighed.

'But what did Ariel have?'

Kai hesitated for a few seconds, then said cautiously:

'He had the Jade Queen?'

Sunny shrugged, unsure.

'Possibly.'

With that, he left Kai behind and went to explore the Toy Room.

The five of them wandered the series of chambers for a while, studying the curios hidden there in ancient times. There were a lot of wondrous things to see, but none of them was what Sunny wanted to find.

Eventually, only one last room remained.

And, coincidentally, Sunny felt his blood stir as he approached it.

'There?'

He looked at Kai and the Song sisters, hesitated for a few seconds, and said:

'Wait.'

They glanced at him curiously.

Sunny did not know what he would discover in the depths of the Toy Room, but he had a strong suspicion that the fourth piece of Weaver's lineage would not fall into his hands easily. The first three had not, after all.

So… he had to be careful. Looking at his companions - one intended, the other three accidental, he took a deep breath and spoke: 'There is a high chance that something unexpected will happen once we enter that room. Whatever it is… don't panic and let me handle it. If things seem too dangerous, retreat immediately.'

He paused, scratched his head, and then added nonchalantly: 'Oh, and if something happens to me… wait until the next me arrives. Should only take a few days.'

There was a small chance that he would lose an incarnation here. That did not mean that he would give up on recovering the piece of Weaver's Legacy.

Revel tilted her head a little.

'The next… you?'

Sunny gave her a wide smile.

'Yeah, the next me. What, did you think that being killed once would actually kill me?'

She stared at him for a few seconds, then let out a frustrated sigh.

'If I didn't think that, I wouldn't have tried to kill you, would I?'

Sunny laughed.

'Probably not. But, hey… it was an admirable attempt. No, really - the ambush at Vanishing Lake was like a work of art. I gained so much that day. Thank you.'

Revel gritted her teeth, then ground them.

'You're welcome.'

Kai leaned toward him and whispered:

'She's lying. You're not welcome.'

Sunny gave him a stare, and then whispered back:

'Why are you whispering, fool? Everyone can hear you!'

Kai coughed in embarrassment.

'Oh… right. Sorry. It's a habit.'

Shaking his head, Sunny took a deep breath and summoned Slayer. The murderous Shadow rose from the darkness, looking at him and his companions from behind her veil.

Death Singer immediately pointed a finger and opened her mouth, her face beaming with excitement, but before she could say anything, Seishan covered her mouth with a hand.

'Ah… I see you have a new servant, my lord.'

Sunny smiled.

'Oh, she's not a servant. She's an employee. Actually, now that I think about it, the two of you are kindred spirits. She only accepts payment in blood.'

Seishan did not say anything, but her gorgeous eyes suddenly glistened with a peculiar emotion.

Sunny chuckled.

'But don't worry, I won't be collecting blood donations today. I already paid her this week, and plus… I don't want to brag, but she only has a taste for my blood.'

Turning away, she pushed the last door open and walked inside a small room.

It had shelves with ancient toys, as well, but there was also a low table in the middle of it, surrounded by soft cushions. There was something on the table…

A square jade board with small hinges in the middle, which suggested that it could be folded to become a case. Its surface was separated into seven rows of seven squares each - most of them were white, with only three squares at the bottom of the board standing out due to their vivid black color. There were intricately carved figurines standing on various squares, too, most of them representing alarming monsters. The three black figurines were surrounded by a dozen white ones.

Sunny stared at the board intently, feeling his blood reacting to it with a peculiar, tingling sensation.

There were no Nightmare Creatures inside the room. No awful danger, no startling secrets.

Just old toys and the radiantly crafted jade board.

Sunny raised an eyebrow, confused.

'What the hell is this?'

Slayer was already in the room, and Kai entered next.

He glanced around, then studied the jade board curiously. Finally, he spoke:

'I think it's… chess.'

I'm curious why Sunny hasn't made memories to help him weave yet, or to allow people in the shadow clan to primitively view, understand or create simple weaves as well. We know weavers historically existed as well.

I feel like memories and their weaves/enchantments could probably create more weaves by moving the needle, maybe even manipulate threads directly. Even if it's not possible(weaves existed on a different 'plane' or something so it might not be), but it could at least spin shadow or essence threads etc.

Programming still exists in the waking world, so why not bootstrap a little lol.

Weaving is too difficult, not only you need to see and touch the weaves but you also need to understand it. See the silver bell, even an enchantement as simple as making a bell loud is a mind hazing tapestry, with runic magic I'm sure you only need to write a few characters for the same effect, ofc you also need to learn runic magic but it's something that can be learn from book even if it take time, for weaving Sunny would need to teach it personally, and it would be difficult to create a support that allow peoples to learn it themselves.

Maybe it's not impossible, but it's time consuming, and is there an urgent need of it? No, the spell gave memories and echoes as reward for killing nightmare creature, it helps artisans to turn their work into memory. As long the spell exists there no urgent need of it. Even if the spell suddenly disappear, runic magic would be the best option, even if artifact made with it can't self repair and be stored in sea soul, it's easier to raise runic sorcerers and mass product.

That's a very valid consideration. Distributing it would be insanely hard and runic sorcery is likely more efficient.

But i can still see Sunny weaving more in the future. Even if the tools are just for himself, i feel like it's useful to make weaving easier if he ever gets downtime on an incarnation lol.

But if we considered feasibility alone, i think it's possible. even if it's not practical, it's still something that he can do by hand in a reasonable time frame. Especially if forgers transferred the memory property first. Imagine the spell-tech, if beth gets electricity or computers in the dream realm, the weave isn't so large that it can't be described digitally, and if he creates a peripheral memory. machines that simply copy weaves and add select recorded enchantments might be possible, even if sunny has to manually place them on objects.

idk i'm just daydreaming at this point lmao.

Sunny can make tools for him but apart needles I don't see what he is lacking, and I think he used to make any tool he needs with shadow now.

About computers, it's not a bad idea, in fact the spell itself is a one somehow, it should be possible in theory.

I’m pretty sure that every weaver who has ever lived had an extended lifespan far longer than regular humans. I don’t think even 3 decades would be enough to begin to grasp the fundamentals of weaving without being able to perceive the threads.

I was gonna say weave but I chose threads because I felt embarrassed the moment I heard that rhyme in my head.

I had totally forgotten about that, sunny has an uncanny memory, and divinity / weavers lineage granted him supernatural intuition and understanding...

Still, just being able to copy weaves along might be possible.
sunny peers into a memory, and kim shares his senses with a group of weavers, who just blindly copy? idk just a fun thought :)

If it was a piece of weaver, shouldn't he see it in a golden light because of divinity?
On the other hand, if it was the weaver of the mind, I believe he would gain the ability to control the powers of memories, not simple as ON and OFF, Which means that he can finally use [Where are my eyes] safely, as he only understands what he wants to understand.

It would be really interesting if it helped him weave

But regarding the light of divinity, the chess board might just be the mechanism required to find the weave, like it could open a passage, open up to reveal something inside or underneath etc. the ruins connected to weaver had ways to hide from shadowsense or be protected from time etc. so it's possible it's just hidden, not that the detail was neglected or a hint that it wasn't divine etc.

As a chess enthusiast, I think there is a limit on what can be called "chess", and 7x7 board with only 3 black squares is beyond that limit already.

I'm turn but I just don't think it's mind weave his getting maybe Flesh weave I don't now but Bastion was filled with illusions it felt like mind weave would be there .....I also have a theory....Mind weave I Bastion...Flesh weave in Ravenheart,Spirit weave in the Underworld owing to Broken hearts impressive will and shadow weave in Night Garden......many would think Shadow weave in the Underworld but if I remember Broken Sword was a sword saint or soemthing he was never associated with Shadow powers.....buy my hint was in Kisongs words.... We broke his body and his soul but we couldn't break his will ....infact I have a feeling that he's alive there maybe yeah his body wa destroyed and his soul too so the spell whispered his death but maybe his will lived on as a wraith or something or as a protector of the legacy or like the invisible guardian of the Nameless temple that is so underrated.. bro stopped the tower of hopes descent easily.... aside that those that mean we'll finally get to see them fight or maybe he'll capture it for Nephis

      We can't be too sure.
It's entirely possible broken sword used shadow weave to study and understand swordsmanship better like sunny did although not creating a battle art perhaps.
It could have granted him the power to harm their shadows, or made his own more resilient who knows

Imma have to disagree with you on that
It was clearly stated that the main reason they decided to kill broken sword was after he obtained a piece of weavers lineage, so you saying that he used the shadow weave to study and understand swordsmanship is completely invalid because according to ki song, broken sword started to lust for power due to not accepting the reality of his wife's death, then he started to search for the last undiscovered lineage "the shadow god lineage" before he found weavers lineage and he had already become 'the renowned sword saint' at that time

Oh yeah true! i was probably wrong that he gained that from weavers lineage. I do think if he was already the sword saint before lusting for power, then we still can't know which fragment he found.

But i do agree with you, it's less likely he searched for shadow weave, but if he only happened to learn of a hint to that specific weave location he wouldn't know where to find any others, he'd just go for whatever he could find. But there may have been other hints i missed.

But i'm sure G3 likely chose a weave that fit his character well, so i'm not sure of anything. But yeah it's more likely he didn't find shadow.

Do you remember if broken sword had a lineage already? i remember his character being the only one in the cohort without one, prompting him to search for one. If he already had one though he might not care which weave so long as his existing lineage devours it and gets empowered

I think when he gets mind weave it's gonna be so op, so first it would like expand his mind or sm so he can control all the shades in his shadow army ( kinda like modret but idk if he's gonna be that intricate with it or it would be so op), he's gonna be way better at weaving bc his mind can first be better but its
also part of weaves lineage so I wouldn't be surprised if he mastered the weave, and his shadow dance could be evolved more bc if his mind is stronger he won't lose himself anymore as easily so he can keep advancing, and he's just gonna have better tactics anyway so win more, and many even fully resistant to mind attacks bc he's already got a stupid resistance to it.
And i reckon his next steps for shadow dance is gonna first like serpent, then transform into people he hasn't killed yet, then final would be to add any person's powers to his own. so pretty op
