Chapter 1525: Memory of Light

The breakfast ended up passing in a strange atmosphere. Which was understandable, considering that they were sharing the table with a homicidal maniac. Mordret was nothing but amiable and pleasant, but it was exactly his disarming charm that made everyone feel disturbed and uncomfortable. After all, they all knew what the Prince of Nothing was capable of… some better than others. Mordret was not the only one who made the conversation feel stifled, though. Nephis was still detached and impassive. Cassie was keeping quiet, as if she had forgotten how to speak. Sunny was not in the mood to talk, either, concentrating on his food. Kai was deep in thought, still struggling to come to terms with what he had learned from Effie and Jet. After a while, all seven of them were more or less done with the meal. In the silence that followed, Effie glanced around the table.

"So…"

She leaned back and smiled. "...Is anyone going to explain what the hell happened in that damned city?"

Sunny looked at her somberly. So did Nephis and Mordret — the former without any emotion, the latter with a hint of amusement. At that moment, Jet stretched her legs, crossed them comfortably, and nodded. "Yeah. Actually, I'm dying to know, too."

Sunny remained silent for a few moments, trying to imagine the situation from their perspective, then sighed. Taking a sip of tea, he said:

"Well… first of all, our base assumption was wrong. We assumed that Twilight had been frozen in the middle of a battle between its army and the invading forces of the Defilement, but in fact, it was a battle between Soul Stealer and the Dread Lord all along."

He paused, then added in a dark tone:

"They must have breached the walls of the city, which allowed Soul Stealer to consume the souls of everyone in Twilight. That was when he turned on the Dread Lord and tried to consume him, as well… and when the Mad Prince made use of the situation to activate the defensive array and trap them both. So, when I deactivated the array, both of those fiends were unleashed."

Across the table from him, Cassie suddenly spoke:

"Some of us have a good chance of resisting Prince Mordret's power, but some don't. That was why you two had to be hidden from Soul Stealer."

She turned slightly, facing Mordret. He smiled innocently. 'I don't like it at all...'

Sunny stared at the Prince of Nothing silently for a moment, then looked away. "Don't worry. You don't have to be wary of him… too much. We are currently allies, after all, and he knows that if something untoward happens, this Nightmare will become his grave."

The threat hidden in his words was not very subtle. But Sunny did not really worry about Mordret — there might have been something really wrong with that guy, but he was not a fool. The exact opposite, actually. He knew that harming any member of the cohort inside the Tomb of Ariel would be a fatal mistake. Especially now, right after Soul Stealer had been destroyed by Nephis, Mordret would not risk making them all his enemies. At least not until the very last moments of the Nightmare.

Sunny sighed. "In any case, pretty much as soon as the array was deactivated, Kai and I faced the Dread Lord. I had to use an enchantment of the Crown of Twilight to resist his commands, but at the cost of plunging into an uncontrollable rage. While the two of us fought against the dragon, Nephis and Cassie found themselves surrounded by the vessels of Soul Stealer."

He paused. "I am… actually not too sure what happened next."

Saying that, Sunny hesitated. He said that he did not know, but in truth, he did know something. Shimmering runes were glowing in the air in front of him. They read:

Name: Nephis.

True Name: Changing Star. Rank: Ascended. Class: Titan. Soul Cores: [7/7].

Soul Fragments: [7000/7000].

Which was already startling enough. But there was something else near the end of the field of runes. Several new strings had appeared there.

Those were the runes that truly gave him pause.

Shifting his gaze slightly, Sunny read them once again:

Aspect Legacy: [Memory of Light].

Aspect Legacy Description: [A beautiful tree grew from the ashes of doubt, bearing fruits of knowledge.] Knowledge of Fire: [Mastered].

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

Knowledge of ???: Unearned.

There were seven strings in total, with only one of them revealed and described as mastered. So… whatever happened to Nephis in Twilight had not only allowed her to become a Titan, but also unlocked her Aspect Legacy. And that Aspect Legacy was more than a little bit strange, seemingly granting some sort of knowledge instead of Relics. Sunny would lie if he said that he wasn't interested in learning what had happened.

He looked at Nephis, hoping that she would explain at least something. She remained silent for a few moments, then shrugged indifferently. "I tried to make my way to the palace, but Soul Stealer stood in my way. Facing defeat, I made a breakthrough and conceived of a new way of using my Aspect… just like you had conceived of using yours to take shapes of powerful creatures. So, I used one of my soul cores as fuel and destroyed it to unleash a conflagration of soul flame."

Sunny stared at her incredulously. On paper, what Nephis said made sense… he had indeed managed to deepen his understanding of his Aspect and create techniques like Shadow Shell and Shadow Incarnation, thus becoming more powerful while remaining of the same Rank. In a similar fashion, Nephis could have deepened her understanding and reached new heights of power. But there was a piece of the puzzle missing. "So… your Aspect allows you to burn your own soul and use it as fuel. But why was the explosion so immense and destructive?"

She looked at him impassively. "My soul essence is especially potent, as you know. The explosion would have been devastating, regardless. But… yes, there was another element, as well. It was sorcery."

Sunny raised his eyebrow, hiding how perplexed he was.

"...Sorcery?"

Nephis nodded. "Yes. The sorcery of Names. I used the Name of Wind to fan the flames burning across Twilight, and absorbed them. Then, I ignited my soul... and whispered the Name of Fire. You saw the rest. In the end, all vessels of Soul Stealer were destroyed. The remnants of the Defiled horde were destroyed, as well, allowing me to reform the Terror Core and form a new one."

She paused for a moment. "With nowhere else to run, Soul Stealer was forced to enter my soul. I burned him."

Her even tone and motionless face made it seem as though destroying a Corrupted Titan, millions of his puppets, and thousands of Nightmare Creatures in one fell swoop was nothing out of the ordinary. The rest of them stared at Nephis in stunned silence. In the end, Effie grinned. "Good job, Princess. Let's be friends, okay?"

Sunny was thinking about something else.

'Knowledge of Fire…'

He had an inkling of what the knowledge Nephis had received from her Aspect Legacy was. It had to have contained the True Name of Fire, at the minimum… of every kind of fire there was, perhaps. It must have also elevated her already unmatched affinity to flame to entirely new heights.

Nephis, meanwhile, looked at Effie with a hint of confusion in her striking grey eyes. "...Aren't we already friends?" The huntress chuckled and raised her thumb up.

To hell with it all. Sunny's busting his ass here and there, has two divine legacies, has unlocked half of his Aspect Legacy, but still sucks? All of his Legacies are crap, and the only useful ones are derived from the plot,Divine Aspects don't work at all, they just create problems with leveling, Shadow Aspect doesn't give the normal amount of shadows/souls, and Weaving stole shadow blood and gives crafting buffs. As a result, Sunny...So, Sunny ends up being the group's go-to guy for various tasks. He's literally the same guy who gets kicked out of the group for being useless in those cheap fantasy mangas.

Don't you think that even his "friends" from his cohort treat him badly? Cassie ignores him most of the time and is clearly plotting to betray him AGAIN, Kai is closer to Effie, Effie bullies him all the time, Nef is close to him because of the plot, and then she is closer to Cassie. It may be the author's intention, but Sunny looks pathetic in their company.

his aspect legacy is not useless though? its just that the author is intentionally nerfing him. shadow lanter is being used, but the blood was useless. as for the other two serpent if he was here would have been a trancendent terror and the fragment comes into play later. but i see what you mean.

That's right, the author is so diligently weakening him. I'm already way ahead, but this arc was very disappointing in its own way.

    Hah.......
I knew that a big power up was coming for nephis from a while ago but this!! This is completely nonsense, ig nephis learned about some of the name sorcery but how could she learn so much when Ananke herself said that she could only teach her how to control the ketch/boat in the limited time??? So how did she learn about fire when Ananke mostly taught her about wind???
Some say that we are hating the book without reason but how can u justify this with any logic or reason??

So how did she learn about fire when Ananke mostly taught her about wind???

It's not that hard to make sense out of it. Most of her abilities revolve around fire, top it all she has Sun God lineage. So, it's not odd that she'll know little about fire from her Aspect, at least true names of it. We don’t know every detail about her Aspect like we do about Sunny’s.

Then again, there's clearly authors favoritism involved in it, icl.

Haaa....decided I won't complain again. But seriously? This is just pure BS. But SS fanatics won't see it.
Aside from shadow serpent, Sunny's aspect legacy has not empowered him in any way. What about his shadow latern?!
Nephis's crown of dusk could rank up any type of memories without any limit, and even significantly empower any memory a tier above, despite only being a freaking f#cking ASCENDED memory.

Yet sunny latern, the highest conceivable rank, and one of the only three mentioned in the novel so far, could only absorb shadows. Later Author gave the lame excuse that gods don't need memories...like seriously?

Now look at this, G3 daughter awakened her aspect legacy and instantly became so OP.

to be fair it comes at a cost of a soul core which she can only have 7 and mordret can also do the same sacrifice his core to make reflections and we dont know if sunny can do the same like sacrificing one of his cores to do something i mean sure he has to have that kind of ability too maybe he can do something crazy too kef
the only downside is he has to work way harder to get a new core after that

Dude, even when the crown was only ascended in the forgotten shore, it was ridiculously overpowered.
The ability to raise any memory by one rank, and that too, without any restriction on the type of memory, and no limitation to number.
That shit was stupendously strong. In fact, am far into the story, and I can beat my chest and say no memory compared to that crown even in it's weakest rank. Not even the divine rank, which till now makes no sense to me.

I mean yeah, we all can see Nephis being favored by the author since day one.

But why are you comparing their Aspect in the first place, it's not like they work similarly. They work completely differently, don't they? Sunny isn't even that weak, he just doesn't get the "protagonist" privileges like many other novels.

Even though I agree many of your comments, but sometimes it feels like you're trying too hard to make complains. Like, from one of your comments

a utility aspect user who defeated Morgan (one of the strongest ascended) with nothing but spirit. It's simply author's BS.

It sure was authors way of progressing the story but was it really that bad of an a$$ pull. I mean, I've seen weak individuals winning against strong opponents in real life just because of their sheer will & resolve and it's a fiction...

Then again, I must give you credit for being observant, it's nice to see people pointing out stuff which they deemed as flaw.

But we shouldn't forget that this story has nearly 3k chapters & written by a human, so a flaw or two is inevitable.

If you can ignore this minor stuff or make sense out of them, enjoy the ride while pointing them out. But if that's continuously getting to you, then ig you can try other works. boast

Already did. And I understand your point though.
Its just it's upsetting when I see Sunny lacking compared to other divine aspect users, after all we have seen him gone through.
I mean come on, I have already reached around 1700 chaps, and personally I feel, the rank of their aspects determine how formidable their powers are, even if Author said it's only potential. Good example is Cassie, her powers are simply ridiculous and she is sacred, not to mention Sunny, nephis and Mordret trio who are overpowered. People like Kai, Effie can't just compare.

So to keep seeing the author give privileges to other divine aspect users while nerfing my boi sunny, just irritated me sometimes.

Though, like you said, overall, story is awesome, aside from fillers tho
And I believe I barely complained again in future chaps😂

yeah it took sunny blood weave and bone weave just to unlock weaving sorcery while how beloved daughter of author got her sorcery simply by ananke teaching her and how tf did she got to know true name of fire without any knowledge it wasn't mentioned in last chapters, sunny is fighting for his life every time he earns while our beloved nephis gets titan core and got 13000+ fragments just from a fight cause she got to know her motivation and then she kills millions of powerful ascended awakened battle hardened soldiers of twilight and a corrupted titan just like that, yay so op, sometimes nephis achieves so much unbelievable feat that it really looks author is trying to forcefully nerf my boi sunny,
