Chapter 1179: Measure of Growth

The war party had stopped and made camp. Sunny's APC was parked within the defensive perimeter, and he was calmly preparing supper. It seemed strange to be doing something so mundane on the verge of an event that had the potential to alter the course of history, but... He was hungry. Hunger was much more powerful than the forces that shaped history.

'Ah. I miss the Rhino...' The armored vehicle that the Fire Keepers had used was by no means cheap, but its amenities were rather bare-bones. There was not even an integrated kitchen, just a few devices for food storage and preparation. Still, he was good at improvising.

As Sunny cooked, he mentally went over what he had gained since coming to Antarctica, and what he could use if the worst happened and the two great clans clashed in a bloody battle.

Sunny had been a Master for many months before the Chain of Nightmares, but he felt that he only came into his Ascended powers here. His mastery of Shadow Manifestation had improved tremendously, both in terms of impact and versatility. He also developed Shadow Shell and Shadow Incarnation, as well as their combination - both of these abilities were extremely powerful.

His practical knowledge of sorcery had grown as well. He was now able to copy more complex enchantments, and do it faster. He could even modify them to a degree. Even though the realities of the Antarctica campaign had prevented Sunny from spending a lot of time on weaving, his repertoire was much broader than before.

There were new powerful Memories in his arsenal, including Transcendent ones. The Sin of Solace, the Shroud of Graceless Dusk, and others... there was the Mirror of Truth, too. Chances were, he would have to use it soon.

In terms of raw power, Sunny was now a Tyrant. He had five cores and five shadows, which increased both his physical prowess and essence capacity. Strangely enough, even his essence control had undergone a noticeable improvement - unable to rely on the Soul Serpent in the dire conditions of the Southern Quadrant, Sunny had been forced to elevate this aspect of his power to an almost flawless efficiency.

Then there were his Shadows. He had gained a new one, the Ravenous Fiend. Now that Imp had feasted on the remains of the Sun Prince, the scrawny goblin was strong enough to be sent into battle. Nightmare was close to both Ascension and unlocking his Terror Ability. Saint had risen both in Class and Rank, becoming a Transcendent Devil.

That alone was an incredible leap for him, but the sublimation of the Mantle of the Underworld was perhaps no less important. His new Attribute, the Marble Shell, improved his resilience and combat performance to a remarkable degree. Honestly, having it was almost like possessing a secondary Aspect.

Considering all that, it was hard to deny that the present Sunny was incomparably more powerful than his past self from before Antarctica. The comparison was not even funny. That past Sunny was nothing more than a feeble brat.

Ironically, Sunny had come to the Southern Quadrant in search of strength, and although he stopped caring about that goal a long time ago, he ended up achieving it nevertheless.

...Despite it all, though, he felt that there were much more valuable things he had gained here. Things that went far beyond Shadows, Memories, and Attributes.

The experience he had gained, the skills he had honed, the lessons he had learned - those were what truly separated him from his past self. Those were what made him truly stronger.

From the darkness of the polar night and the desperation of the Antarctic Center to the cold expanse of East Antarctica and its many dangers, Sunny had grown and matured. He had gone through countless battles and achieved many improbable victories...

There had been harrowing defeats, too.

Those had taught him as well.

Preparing utensils for three people, Sunny looked into the distance and sighed.

He would be turning twenty-one in about a month... there had been a time when he was not even sure that he would make it that far, but now, here he was.

'I... don't really feel young anymore.'

Maybe someone like Wake of Ruin would laugh at these words, but Sunny truly felt that way. He had never really gotten a chance to be a child, and now, he was not a youth anymore, either.

'Am I... old, then?'

As Sunny was pondering the vicissitudes of life, the hatch of the APC opened, and Nephis came in, soon followed by Cassie. The two had been spending the last few days in endless strategy meetings, so both looked exhausted.

The smell of freshly cooked food made both of them relax. Noticing the distant expression on Sunny's face, Nephis tilted her head a little and asked:

"What are you thinking about so seriously?"

He flinched, then shook his head and continued setting the table.

"Ah, nothing serious. I was just thinking... that I'm too old for this crap."

She frowned, then pierced him with a cold gaze.

"...I'm older than you, though?"

Her meaning was clear... Are you calling me old?!

Sunny grinned.

"Yes, yes. Forget I said anything. Come, noona, let's eat... who knows when we'll get a chance to enjoy a proper meal again..."

The two gave him strange looks and sat around the small fold-out table, looking down at the dishes he prepared. Well, really, there was just one dish - the everything potslop that Professor Obel had taught him how to make.

Sunny sat down, too, and put a generous serving on his plate.

"But honestly, you're not even a full year older than me, while Cassie is not a full year younger than me. So... let's speak comfortably..."

He put a spoonful of the weird slop into his mouth, then smiled at them.

Cassie hesitated and cautiously nudged the slop with a spoon.

"...What even is that?"

Sunny grinned.

"Ah, I am glad that you asked! This is an ancient dish that has been passed down from person to person since the Dark Times. As I was told, it was initially inspired by corpse meat..."

While it is true that Sunny is physically younger than Neph, he is older mentally. Didn’t he spend years in the Nightmare of Nightmare?
I remember how at first some time passed there before he got killed.
And I believe he was in thousands of nightmares fighting Nightmare before finally defeating him.
Then he also has partially the memories of his dreams past lives.
Even if he only remembers a third of it, he has the right to feel old

You call this measure of growth?
Hundreds of chaps back, he lost to Morgan even b4 unlocking d second aspect of his shadow dance. Yet now that he is unlocked two and he is even heading towards the fourth, he still lost to her, yet readers conveniently attributed it to difference in skill, when Sunny is a tyrant and she isn't. Not to mention Cassie who we barely saw fight is now being portrayed to possess skills that also almost rival Morgan.

But when Mordret Invaded Sunny soul and Instantly obliterated him, by using sunny own power against him, readers attributed it to Mordret being of higher class, and conveniently ignored how absurd it was for Sunny whose aspect legacy is based on shadowing other techniques to win, to be instantly suppressed, by his own power.
My point is, despite how far Sunny has grown, Author only makes him stronger than average awakened but weaker than the truly talented ones.

I literally made an account to disagree with your comment. Like how little do you have to understand about this novel to be making a comment like this. This novel isn't just purely based on battle prowess, its also about mental development and maybe you need to take something away from that.

To start off, yes Sunny is a tyrant but as he goes up in class it isn't a very stark difference in physical prowess, yes of course there is a little bit of difference but it isn't a crazy amount. Not to mention, Morgans own aspect is literally tailored to be around physical augmentation, not to mention the fact that she can add enchantments to herself which we don't know what they are.

Moving on, Cassie was literally never said to have skills rival to Morgan, she just said she was a good sparring partner. Cassie can literally foresee her opponents movements and thats why shes so formidable in battle lmfao. If your gonna make head cannons at least make them consistent with the story.

Lastly, Mordret literally was watching Sunny use his aspect for MONTHS picking up on his details and niches on how Sunny's uses his aspect. Moreover, Mordret is a genius at combat rivaling Sunny or being more so talented than Sunny. Mordret has years and years stacked ontop of Sunny and he was a tyrant using Sunnys own aspect, so obviously he'd get outclassed? Yes, Sunny is a genius he is probably a prodigy of all prodigies but you cannot ignore how much time legacies have put into developing their skills. The characters aren't just stuck at one power level and don't change at all, they have their own experiences, own growths, own developments. Also, one of Sunny's biggest strengths is his deceitfulness where he cunningly outsmarts his opponent by drawing them into a trap using his aspect or shadows.

Like do you want this guy Sunny to randomly go to the top? like give him time, his own genius will catch up and outclass them soon enough lmfao, comparing a guy with 4-5 years experience with legacies with 10+ like holy

You really are a dumbass...to think you had even create an account to simply spew shit!
Morgan's awakened ability gave her physical enhancement majorly focused on durability. And she clearly stated it that she wouldn't be using her ascended ability. Which means she wasn't enchanted.
Sunny is a tyrant, which means he should not only have more essence but also significantly stronger. Don't forget that they can strengthen themselves by using essence. Not to mention he was also amplified by three shadows, which means he should have been significantly stronger physical-wise.
I don't want sunny to be op...no, not even close. But I want the author to be consistent on his writing when he comes to the fights. You must have reached where Mordret faced off against Morgan...now can you tell me that fight was consistent with what was portrayed here?

And that you mention Mordret spied on sunny for months? Dude, and so what?!
It is one thing to learn and another to practice it. That he was able to overwhelm sunny instantly with the latter's own power simply doesn't make sense to me, especially considering sunny aspect legacies is about doing the exact same thing. At least, he should have needed time to get somewhat used to the shadow powers not instantly dominate sunny.
And now you mentioning Mordret was a titan when sunny was a devil? Aren't you shameless?
What about sunny being a tyrant that is even amplified by shadows, while Morgan is simply a beast.

And finally, It's normal for the others to grow even as Sunny is too. But you will agree with me that with situations sunny has faced, with the incomparable number of kills under his belt, and the various abilities he has, he should be normally stronger than some characters. Come on? How can we mesure his growth? We know from the beginning that as divine aspect wielder, only people like nephis and select few were stronger than him in the beginning. And yet with hundreds of chapters having passed and with sunny having accomplished unachievable things, we are still told he is weaker than these people. So how then do we mesure his growth? Dude, nephis confirmed she didn't even kill a thousand creatures in her second nightmare, but sunny killed more than that when he was only at the colliseum of hope. Not to mention the dreadful numbers of kills in the middle of nightmare and at the end....it is easily In the thousands if not even tens of thousands.
My point is, with all this achievement, there is no way you can tell me his rate of growth shouldn't overwhelm the others. It simply doesn't make sense.

Cmon. It was stated that between Sunny and Morgan either could win. It’s just that they were both holding back. Sunny also stated his goal was to not win. Honestly it’s insane that he was even able to make so much progress. Bros a f#cking anomaly among the awakened. He had seemingly nothing when he first went into his first nightmare. Nephis has her clans fighting style and trained for years while surviving assassinations. Morgan is the heir to one of the great clans, the war clan nonetheless. Meaning she was literally trained from birth for combat which Modret and Sunny said. And modret is f#cking op as shit. Awakened since 12? And he’s far older and experienced than Sunny. Modret literally said a few chapters back that he wasn’t super talented and even less so than Sunny, so he trained harder than anyone else, especially because he did not have a combat aspect and his aspect had to do with direct confrontation in the soul sea, so he had to train insanely hard. Not even mentioning his cunningness. Also he said that in a direct confrontation he only had access to the other persons arsenal in their soul sea, so he had to be cunning and study them. I mean he took out two masters when he was trapped and took their bodies. So yes Sunny has grown an insane amount compared to where he started, it’s just that everyone else wasn’t born in the outskirts with nothing. I mean it’s even praised that people from the outskirts survive their first nightmare.
