Chapter 1010: The Fall of Falcon Scott (28)

Trapped in the small bubble of the energy barrier, the Tyrant turned into a murderous hurricane. Moving with speed that was surprising for such a large creature, it thrashed and spun, trying to rip the hateful humans apart.

Sunny and Dale had managed to dodge or deflect the barrage of devastating attacks, for now, but avoiding being crushed by the sheer mass of the frenzied monstrosity was even harder. The barrier was just too small to move away, leaving them no choice but to try and straddle it.

That had not been a good choice… even on the Tyrant's back, the three maws and the stinger could attack them freely. More than that, the abomination instantly rolled on the ground, throwing them off.

Sunny barely avoided being buried under the mountain of flesh. Just a handful of seconds after Dale had erected the barrier, he felt the salty taste of blood on his tongue. Both Ascended were battered and wounded.

Of course, the Tyrant was not unscathed, either.

Three of its legs were gone, its body was covered with a multitude of deep cuts, and one of its necks was halfway to being severed. Better yet, the creature seemed to have surrendered to its most primal instincts, driven into madness by the Sin of Solace.

The bestial rage of the Tyrant was terrifying, but it would have been much more dangerous to fight the monstrosity if it had retained its inhuman intellect. A smart enemy was infinitely deadlier than a senseless one.

Now, all they had to do was put it down.

"Cut off its head!"

"I'm… trying…"

Dale's shield was wedged into one of the Tyrant's necks, and as Sunny yelled, he hammered its rim with his mace, as if driving a nail into wood. The heater shield sliced through the flesh of the abominations like a blade, causing a river of black blood to spill onto the stones.

Half-deafened by the creature's shriek, Sunny manifested a wall of shadow to defend Dale from one of the remaining two maws. The wall broken under the monstrous assault, but by that time, the Ascended had hammered his shield one last time, and one of the Tyrant's heads flew off.

'Damn!'

After that, Sunny had to worry about himself. The wounded creature shifted, slamming him into the barrier with the looming bulk of its body. Bone Weave and Marble Shell saved him from being turned into bloody paste, but he was trapped, crushed, and unable to breathe. What's worse, there was no escape…

Well, for most people. Sunny simply dissipated into the shadow projected onto the creature's body by the shimmering barrier, and appeared on the other side of the abomination, his sword already falling to bite into the its side.

Just like that, the dire battle continued. Sunny and Dale were one mistake away from being greatly injured or killed at every moment, but neither of them had made that mistake yet. As time went on, their enemy grew more and more frenetic, but the two Masters only grew more effective in their attempts to butcher it. They were learning how to better hurt it with every blow, dodge, and step.

Dale's armor cracked, but in return, the Tyrant's stinger was shattered by the heavy flanged mace. Sunny was now bleeding from a deep cut above his left eye, but in return, one of Tyrant's maws was missing half of its fangs.

Using a momentary opening created by the monstrosity throwing all of its weight against the barrier, Sunny finally managed to position himself for an all-out attack. He dashed forward, turning his body light to create momentum, and slashed the Sin of Solace across the base of one of the creature's necks.

The jade jian seemed to laugh as it sliced through the tough hide, steel muscles, and unbreakable bones of the Tyrant, emerging from the other side of its neck in a fountain of blood. The second of the three maws fell to the ground.

"One more!"

Dale received an earth-shattering blow on his shield and slid back with a low grunt. His hand trembled a little.

"The barrier won't hold for much longer. We must... hurry..."

Sunny did not need to be reminded. He already felt that the shadows surrounding them were changing — the shimmering energy was growing dimmer every time the Tyrant slammed into it. By now, most of its shine was already gone.

But the creature had lost most of its weapons, as well.

It was bleeding heavily, maimed and wounded, its speed gradually decreasing. Sunny knew not to let his guard down — these last moments were often the most deadly, both because human fighters tended to get overconfident when the victory neared, and because their enemies would often abandon all caution in one last desperate attempt to destroy the opposition and survive.

Still… this had to end quickly.

'Risky…'

The thought flashed through his mind, but Sunny was already moving. Pushing himself forward, he deflected a glancing blow from the creature's tail… and slammed into the Tyrant like a cannonball.

Thrown off balance, the monstrosity reeled, and then threw itself into a fierce retaliatory attack. Sunny managed to dodge its legs, but not its maw. He simply slashed at it with the Sin of Solace, feeling the flesh part before the jade blade.

At the same time, the creature left itself completely open to Dale. The stalwart Master lunged forward, his mace suddenly igniting with a dangerous red glow. The moment it connected with the base of the Tyrant's last remaining neck, the flanged head of the mace exploded with ominous light, and something thundered.

Sunny saw the shape of the abomination's neck melting in the furious red light as it was torn apart.

Then, for a second, he could not think about anything anymore.

Moments before it died, the Tyrant managed to grab his shoulder with its maw and fling Sunny into the air. Feeling a pulse of tearing pain, he found himself flying backward away from the dying creature. His back connected with the weakened barrier… and shattered it, the Marble Shell turning rigid from the impact.

Sunny landed gracelessly a dozen meters away from the convulsing body of the Tyrant, rolled for a few meters more, and came to a stop at the edge of the water. A pained groan escaped from his lips.

'That… hurt…'

He slowly sat up and glanced at his shoulder. The leather pauldron of the Puppeteer's Shroud was pierced in several places, and there were deep scratches on his skin. The Tyrant's fangs, however, had not cut deep. The lacerations were shallow.

He took a shaky breath and looked up. High above, the Devouring Cloud seemed… aimless and lost. Without malevolent purpose guiding the swarm of brood beasts, they were being slowly obliterated by the city defenses.

Saint and Master Jet must have finished off their Tyrant, as well.

Sunny glanced at Dale, who seemed rather battered, but alive.

'We… won.'

By all accounts, he was supposed to feel jubilation and relief. Even though the battle was not over, the Irregulars had accomplished their task. Today, the First Army was going to celebrate a victory.

However, Sunny did not feel relieved.

Instead, he felt… cold. Very, very cold.

And frightened.

'What the hell is this feeling?'

Struggling against a deep sense of unease, Sunny shivered and turned to the black waves, his hand reaching for the hilt of the Sin of Solace.

Just as he did, the water parted, and something… someone… appeared from below it.

Sunny froze, staring with wide eyes. His face paled terribly.

There was a man walking out of the ocean, water flowing from his armor. He was tall, with a powerful build. His hair was dark, and his bloodless face… was empty, not a hint of emotion hiding in his hollow eyes.

Instead, there was something different in them. Something vast, alien, and terrifying.

The man slowly appeared from the water and took a firm step toward Sunny, looming above him like a hollow wraith. The empty stare of his glassy eyes fell down.

Sunny's hand shook.

Stunned, he tried to crawl back and whispered in a faint, trembling voice:

"...V—Verne?"

Seriously? Something incredible happened, and the comments only talk about the power system, which in my opinion is clear and easy to understand.

...there is no way he is. His corpse is being used by the creature, that's my guess. Same creature as the one they met on the way to Antarctica, the one that didn't blink.

What I'm gathering is that, along with increases to intelligence with more cores, once you get to 5,6,7 cores, each class gets a qualitative substantial power increase, like ranks do. In guessing ranks have an even better increase in 5,6,7.

Rank increase effects their ability to force their “Will” on the world while class increases give them better intelligence along with special aspects and abilities. That’s why a fallen tyrant or above is stronger then a corrupted demon or lower.

That only applies to Great creatures and above. The will of Corrupted ranks and below will be so low that it is still negligible.

Yes, the gaps between higher ranks are MUCH larger, if I had to put it like this, it would take probably 4 masters to fight a Saint, but dozens of saints to fight a Sovereign.

Alright so I have been seeing a lot of debate on the power system and how it’s “inconsistent”, but hopefully with how I explain it as how I believe it works, it may clear it up.

With a monsters divinity (awakened, fallen, corrupted, etc.) I picture as a physical increase to them making them a lot stronger of a prior rank of the same class.

Class (beast, monster, demon, etc.) however, I picture as more of a mental increase where they are actually thinking and using methods and techniques in battle. A tyrant especially with its ability to command minions is an example of how it can control its area. Not only that, but it can also fight back alone if it needed too. A devil on the other hand won’t have as much skills or iq to maneuver around the awakened compared to a tyrant.

Yes a corrupted devil is technically stronger, but the iq of a fallen tyrant can make it seem more dangerous depending on the situation.
That’s the way I see it and if anyone has any thoughts or opinions abt please comment as I would love to see your thoughts abt it.

The way I look at it is that rank essentially correlates to energy output. As you said by increasing in rank, an abomination becomes far tougher and stronger seeing an enormous increase in their energy pools and output capabilites however most of these changes are internal not neccacarily always or significantly affecting their physical forms (This is not always the case and we do see some external changes as higher ranked nightmare creatures tend to be larger on average, however, it is mostly still accurate as getting bigger is not a requirment of rank increase ie Saint not changing at all when she ascended).

Class is more of an increase in the vessel of an abomination. Their bodies become more optimised to their abilities, they become more intelligent, and they begin to unlock certain abilities. The power gained by class increase is also far more exponential. An increase in class is also closely tied to the status of a nightmare creature which is expressed in many different ways.

From Beast to Monster: An abomination's body will become more optimised to suit their abilities and they become far more formidable physically

From Monster to Demon: An abomination will usually gain a perverted sense of intelligence. It will be able to better utilise the tools at its disposal and it becomes significantly more dangerous to deal with as repeatedly stated in the story.

From Demon to Devil: An abomination gains unique and insidious powers similar to an awakened's aspect. This is the first huge jump in the scale as the abomination is given far more dangerous tools and further increases in intelligence to better use what it has. It is often at the Devil class that an abomination becomes stronger than an average awakened at its same rank (This only really applies to awakened tbh as masters and above are all elites)

From Devil to Tyrant: Abominations gain access to the ability and status to command certain creatures like thrawls. The type of creatures and methods they use to command are unique, but usually, a Tyrant will create a lesser version of itself somehow. Tyrants can only create/control abominations of the rank below them, ie The Awakaned Tyrant Mountain King Husk creating the Dormant Beast larvae. However, creatures in this hoard can evolve if given enough time and resources, which is why the Beatle Tyrant had other Corrupted lieutenants. I would say that when they evolve, the Tyrant loses its ability to directly control them, but due to the way nightmare creatures work, they would continue to follow the stronger lord. This is the point where you clearly see the rate of power increase significantly with each class upgrade, only getting larger with each jump

      From Tyrant to Terror:
This is where the changes become less easy to explain due to us just not seeing very many of them, and the ones we do see have such a wide range of applications. From most examples we've seen, becoming a Terror further expands on an abomination's previous abilities, allowing them to command larger hoards and become frighteningly intelligent, seemingly similarly so to humans. Terrors also unlock another ability of some sort, which often builds on their devil powers, eg Nightmare's Terror power, which
      .

      From Terror to Titan
Now, quite honestly, I don't really know with this one. We just haven't seen or explored enough about Titans yet to make blanket statements on them. From what we have seen, most titans seem to embody an element of some sort, eg the Winter Beast, Goliath of Stone, the Cursed Forest of Bastion etc. They are almost always massive, and from a lot of the examples we've seen, often embody more of a conceptual form. Once again, using the example of the Forest or even the Dark Sea of the Forgotten Shore, this trait makes them incredibly difficult to kill.

In terms of scaling, class often has a far larger impact on the feasibility of a battle than rank (At least at the higher classes). The main thing that classes at Devil or above introduce is variability. Each creature is unique and past the rank of Devil, matchup and situation become nearly as important to a battle as actual power. A fallen Devil's abilities and nature may match up incredibly well against a corrupted beast, which may allow it to kill it, or a fallen demon may be killed by a swarm of awakened beasts and monsters simply due to sheer numbers.

For a fallen Titan like Goliath, I said this in an earlier comment, but I would say that it could easily kill any Corrupted abomination below the rank of Tyrant. The physical and status changes brought on by being a titan, plus the unique enhanced abilities, would just be overwhelming for anything below tyrant class. Eventually, Goliath would just get overwhelmed by the sheer numbers sent by a mature tyrant; however, I doubt it would be killed. Most likely, Goliath would take damage to the point where it is forced to retreat.

If anyone reads all this, thank you, it took me like half an hour to write. I hope it helps any newer readers that still might be confused as to the 'inconsistency' of the power scaling system

I’m sorry but why is he struggling so much against a fallen terror, I’m confused becoz he fought nightmare his horse and that’s a fallen terror he managed to win it struggled of course but back then he was just an awakened now he’s ascended he shouldn’t really struggle here.

Yes, this man here is speaking truth and getting hate. He was an awakened demon and still defeated an awakened terror (Nightmare). Now he is an ascended devil yet he's struggling soo hard against a fallen tyrant? Doesn't make sense

Matchup and situation. As mentioned by Skytide against the Beatle Tyrant, if your enemy can fly and you can't, it's not a good look. Second, the dome created by Dale made the battle significantly harder by cutting off the space that they had to manoeuvre, and third, Sunny's aim in this fight was different from when he was facing Nightmare. Against Nightmare, Sunny was fighting a battle to the death with no holds barred. Against the Fallen Tyrant, he is fighting to prevent it from running away and recovering to the hoard, which puts constraints on him and makes it harder to fight than what happened with Nightmare.

You're missing the point here maybe. A large airborne creature in a confined space should be much easier to deal with because-

Having less space favours the larger creature, though, because it is bigger and stronger, and the cramped space takes away Sunny and Dales ability to dodge as effectively. The dome was still big enough for it to attack and move around a little bit, so being more physically imposing is an advantage with limited space because it pretty much only needs to attack in a straight line.

In a direct confrontation, if they were fighting to the death with no other objective, Sunny would have stomped it, and even with how it was written, it's not like they struggled that much to kill it. Sure, any mistake would have been fatal, but that's the case with all fights with high-rank and class nightmare creatures, so I feel like the anger towards the 'inconsistency' was a bit too exaggerated. You are entirely correct, though, that it probably should have been easier considering the nature of the tyrant and the fact that it was grounded.
I also entirely understand the frustration at Sunny seeming so much weaker than Neph and Mordret because, on my first read, I know I felt the same
