Chapter 767: Measure Of Strength

The news of Changing Star's return spread across the world like wildfire. The network practically exploded with an endless amount of discussions. Everyone wanted to share their excitement and celebrate the homecoming of the young hero who, without a doubt, was going to become one of the most powerful champions of humanity soon.

While exaggerated, the reaction of both mundane humans and Awakened alike was easy to understand. In this dark and fragile world that balanced on the verge of destruction, everyone longed for something to illuminate their lives and chase their fears away. Everyone desperately searched for hope.

Thinking about it, Sunny couldn't help but remember the description of Neph's Aspect. Light Bringer…

[You are a creature of light that was banished and doomed to exist in the darkness. You bring radiance and warmth to wherever you go, but with it comes indescribable longing.]

Was hope the longing it talked about? Longing was just another word for desire, after all…

In any case, the government had long used Nephis to satiate that desire. They had constructed an uplifting narrative around the events of the Forgotten Shore and made her the linchpin of the story.

No matter how much Sunny hated the abhorrent movie adaptation that had been rushed through production soon after their Awakening, he had to admit that it was a sign of how deeply the survivors of the Dreamer Army and their leader had affected the public.

To be fair, the government had not needed to work too hard to turn Changing Star into an iconic figure. Her achievements had truly been singular and remarkable. Her perceived martyrdom had truly been compelling.

What was more, Nephis had inherited an already established and powerful legend simply on account of her birthright. Her grandfather was the first human to conquer the Second Nightmare and become a Master. Her father was the first to conquer the Third and become a Saint. Both of them were great warriors, pioneers, and revered heroes of humanity.

…And now, she had joined their ranks by becoming the first human to Ascend directly from being a Sleeper.

Considering all that, he was not surprised to see how intensely people reacted to the news. Already, there were a lot of discussions on the network predicting that Changing Star would inevitably become the first to conquer the Fourth Nightmare and push humanity one step closer to salvation, as her parents and grandfather had done.

If only they knew…

If only they knew that Sovereigns had already given up on their world, and that very soon, hundreds of millions of people would probably die for it.

And that the hero they were praising had much grander ambitions.

Conquer the Fourth Nightmare? No, that was too trivial for Changing Star of the Immortal Flame clan. She was going to conquer all Nightmares. She was going to destroy the Spell itself…

Or at least try to, even if the waking world had to burn as the consequence.

While the government agents ran around with panicked expressions and most of the waiting crowd dissipated, Sunny found himself leaving the group and walking away to find something to eat. Morgan of Valor had left some time ago, so he did not feel too threatened.

'Oh, right… the true negotiations ended up never happening. I wonder what it means for my future…'

Eventually, he settled in the hospital's cafeteria and forced himself to swallow some food. A few years ago, he would have been ecstatic to be able to feast on high-quality food like that. But now, he did not even feel the taste of various dishes. They might as well have been mimic meat or synthpaste.

Sunny sat quietly, consumed by thoughts, when Effie suddenly appeared nearby and landed on a chair near him. There was a mountain of food on her own tray. The huntress looked at him with a smile:

"Great minds think alike, huh?"

She took a bite out of a small cake, then swallowed it entirely and said with satisfaction:

"The healers want us four to come help them when Nephis wakes up. You know, in case she becomes... agitated again."

Sunny silently nodded.

Effie sighed.

"I can't believe that she just went and Ascended… well, I can actually. It is still amazing, though! Neph must have one hell of a crazy story to tell. It might even be more unbelievable than our own."

He shrugged, then put a spoonful of something mildly spicy in his mouth.

The huntress studied him for a while, then suddenly said:

"You know… for someone who was just reunited with their first and best friend, you don't look too happy, doofus."

Sunny glanced at her.

"Who said that we are friends?"

Effie scoffed.

"Don't lie to me, Sunny. I know how you feel about Nephis, and how much of it you feel. What's up with you?"

He grimaced.

"Lie? How can I lie?"

Sunny lowered his eyes, hesitated for a while, and then said quietly:

"Stronger… I wanted to be stronger than her. I really, really tried. And to be honest, I am very annoyed that all of it was for nothing."

The huntress looked at him with a strange expression.

"Is that why you were in such a hurry to challenge the Second Nightmare?"

He leaned back and turned away.

"...Yeah. That was a big part of it."

Effie lingered for a bit, then slowly shook her head.

"Listen, Sunny. I am really sorry to say this… but you will never be stronger than Nephis."

He looked at her sharply, sparks of anger igniting in his eyes:

"Oh yeah? Why is that?"

She sighed.

"It's very simple, really. Both of you are exceptional, talented, and have great will. Both of you are incredibly strong. But, Sunny… it doesn't matter how fast you gain a new Rank, how many Nightmare Creatures you kill, how many soul fragments you absorb. She will always be ahead."

She looked him in the eyes and said soberly:

"It's because she has something that you lack. Nephis, she has... conviction, Sunny. And you don't. As long as that doesn't change, you will always be behind."

As he stared at her with resentment, Effie suddenly grinned and shrugged.

"But hey… who cares? I have even less conviction than you, and I'm doing great. Who needs it, anyway… I would much rather have a full belly than something like that!"

With that, she laughed and returned to her food, not paying the conversation any more attention.

Sunny, however, remained still for some time.

A somber expression appeared on his face.

After a while, he sighed and silently resumed eating his meal.

'Conviction… conviction... who needs it, indeed…'

We see it every chapter but i guess it never really sunk in since he was the mc. The novel's name is Shadow Slave. Author wasn't exactly sparing his words. We just deluded ourselves I guess

Let me tell you smth, if you write a story thinking people will love having the mc be a slave for a woman, even if you have incredible writing, you'd be incredible mistaken. Actually, it would be perfect for those weirdos who like to get dominated by powerful women, maybe the author is like that. Effie, Cassia, Nephis, all of them are powerful women that subdued the mc lmfao.

Hope is indeed portrayed as female, but for all the gods they are portrayed as being both and none at the same time, being able to assume any gender, considering how they are viewed in different cultures. The God of War is also known in some parts as the Goddess of War and the Goddess of Life. Gender doesnt really matter for them.

Also, we barely know about 3 daemons and 3 gods, 2 of each being closer to being represented as males (Shadow and Sun gods, Weaver and Nether)

He needs to separate from Nephis and Cassie only, the others are fine. Because they don´t turn Sunny into a brainless idiot just by being next to him.

Curious, what do you think the title of the story is? We don't even know if there is a level high enough to this point in the story to get rid of his flaw. And as long as he has it, he will be susceptible to becoming a slave. I have no clue why people have been bitching about this since the beginning of the novel when it is in the freaking title of the novel. It's like watching a show called beast wars, and complaining about watching beasts go to war and wanting something else.

i wouldn't complain about that beast war thing though joy

anyways i agree with everything u said.. i don't really understand the general complaint of mc being a slave when nephis and sunny relationship is anything but a master slave one..

in fact im glad that this weakness was taken by nephis already instead of the likes of mordret.. even without a master, it's going to be an annoying read with that constant threat of him being slave to some villain at any moment..

Maybe but his role isn't really to be the strongest is it? It's clear he's on the path of a Reality Editor or something similar like the Weaver, and raw power isn't exactly important there. He's been constantly wanting to overpower her and become op, and he is the latter, but he doesn't need to be the strongest. Nephis might be an enemy in the future sure, but just because she's stronger doesn't mean she can't be defeated. After all, Mordred was miles above the MC too and was still defeated in some ways. Nephis has a ton of things to guide and boost her along her path, with her heritage, horrifyingly powerful conviction and determination, bloodline, prophetic true name, etc. Sunless does have awesome stuff too, but his roles are a lot more oriented towards less raw power focused abilities. Her being like this is actually quite necessary for the MC to understand, since it's born from his fear of being subordinate and under someone that he's thinking this.

Her destiny is to destroy the system that plagues and creates, no matter the cost. So she will most likely always be stronger. His role...is to create, to pick up everything and make something out of it. He turns shadows into his strength, he controls the shadows, and he can create artifacts and affect destiny. Hell he can even dreamwalk and corrupt people. While nephis has horrifyingly dangerous abilities that damage her in return for power.

Well, you are right but at the same time,
After all, Mordred was miles above the MC too and was still defeated in some ways
Mordret was even more Utility based than Sunny, yet since he didn't have any individual strength he lost. In many ways the ability to create or destroy or whatever needs to be converted into some form of tangible strength, or it's in no way possible for Sunny to ever have confidence against Nephis.

Well he did still have plenty of individual strength. After all, he can possess anyone, so he would still have a ton of power. Sunny tricked and manipulated him to defeat him despite all that, even though it obviously wasn't a clear "defeat". For now at least, MC and nephis very likely won't be direct opponents. There's not much reason to fight each other for a long while unless we get an update on her ambitions and the MC gets pissy bc of that, or if they're forced to. The MC has a very strange path that differs greatly from hers, so there's no guarantee that he will never be able to defeat her in whatever way. A defeat does not mean kill, to break, it means to win. Even if it's through words and she concedes, then it's still winning.

From the way things are going, it's possible all the team members will take a greater role in everything depending on their powers. Kai with his Truth and Charm, Effie with her Strength and Gluttony/Brawn, Cassie with her Future Sight and True Sight, Nephis with her Soul Burning for Healing and Destruction, and Sunny for his Shadows, Creation, and Fate Manipulation.

In the end, we'll just have to see what the next chapter after Dark Shore brings us, so we can maybe tell what will really happen. I for one am kinda hoping for some actual development between the MC and Nephis, since they both require war to grow. They're also pretty fun as characters together, and he's the main thing that kept her sane, with her being able to watch him grow as he has watched her. Would be really nice to see them develop an actual relationship some

I think everyone has a role they have to play while neph is a one man army sunny quite literally have a one man army and if neph wanted to kill sunny it's almost impossible since he is a cockroach but anyway the roles they are assigned just like you said her destiny is to break the nightmare or spell while sunny is to change fate his first and biggest obstacle is his status as a slave since the beginning to the end probably is to save the world indirectly because of his blood line of course this is just my opinion and guess I could be wrong but lets see
