Chapter 508: A short break (1)

- Let’s go back, Lonovera, it seems like something interesting is about to happen.

- Okay, Mr. Lee Ki-Young.

‘Wow, let’s watch that again.’

- Let’s go back, Lonovera, it seems like something interesting is about to happen.

- Okay, Mr. Lee Ki-Young.

‘That was really nice…’

I wasn’t the type to be attached to scenes, but for some reason, I wanted to keep replaying that scene. Our staredown was the highlight of Act One, and it was made even more amazing by how Doom Ki-Young ruthlessly turned around and left the scene.

“This is what I’m talking about. This is a high-quality production!” I remarked.

I honestly thought that it was kind of cheesy, but I was sure I fulfilled the role pretty well.

I downed a glass of wine while trying my best to erase the thought that I had the same disease[1] as Lonovera, and I felt like I was in heaven.

Of course, drinking wine while replaying the great scenes of Act One wasn’t that big of a deal, but it brought me a great deal of joy. Any human would enjoy spending time by themselves while celebrating a small win.

‘Moments like this motivate me the most...’

However, I honestly would like to just rest for the rest of my life.

I took a sip of another glass of wine and placed my legs on the desk to make myself more comfortable.

However, someone knocked on the door, so I hurriedly turned off the magic hologram as if I were a teenager who didn’t want to get caught watching an embarrassing video. I got so flustered that I inadvertently pressed the rewind button.

Fortunately, the magic hologram didn’t give off any embarrassing moans.

However, I ended up seeing Donovan’s death scene once again.

‘Oh, man…’

- I-I… by a… by a mere human…

- Ha, ha ha…

- I’m… sorry. My friend… I’m… sorry. Belial…

‘Damn it. I didn’t want to see that…’

I was a bit flustered, but I made sure that my nervousness wouldn’t appear on the surface.

I glanced toward the door and saw Rimoura looking at me worriedly.

- I-I’m sorry, Advisor Lee Ki-Young. I’m sorry for the sudden—

“I-It’s fine,” I said.

It was clear that she misunderstood.

- It wasn’t your fault.

Huh?Ah, right,” I mumbled.

I quickly understood what she was talking about.

- No need to be so worried. It’s definitely not your fault. That dumb Donovan…

“...”

- Mr. Lee Ki-Young…

“I just feel really bad. I didn’t expect that an accident would occur, and I didn’t expect that it would lead to Mr. Donovan’s passing. It was all because I got careless. I’m sure the others are really disappointed in me right now…” I told her.

- No, please don’t think that way. It wasn’t something you should worry about, Advisor Lee Ki-Young. It was an unexpected situation, and it was all because of his stupidity.

“But…”

- It was his fault for ignoring the script and charging into the 17th base. He could have gone back to hell before dying, but he attempted a hail mary… Calling it a stupid move is an understatement. You don’t have to feel guilty over that bastard’s death.

‘I know, Rimoura. I made no mistakes. I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s all Donovan’s fault. Yeah.’

Unlike me, the demons seemed like they weren’t that affected by Donovan’s death. The other high priests of the 27th Legion actually called him a dumbass while seemingly ashamed to have been in the same legion as him.

Donovan got too immersed in his role, and he died for it. He died and was split by a human in half after ignoring the script and moving arbitrarily.

He could have gone back to hell by reversing the summoning, but he decided to use up his accumulated merits to transform.

However, he still ended up dying.

Therefore, I couldn’t help but think that he was indeed an idiot. The way he died was far from a noble or honorable death. It was a laughable death considering his many years of experience as a demon of the 27th Legion way before it joined the 72nd legions.

The soft-liners within the legion ended up obtaining more power.

I found it sad that he thought of me as his friend until the end, but I didn’t pity him at all. If I had to make a list of the dumbest deaths in the history of demons, he would be at the top of the list.

He had managed to make his name known like he wanted, but in some ways, I was the one who had contributed the most to fulfilling his wish. The method was different, but he was probably satisfied with his achievements in the afterlife.

I felt proud, but I started shedding fake tears.

Whooo, he was a great demon… Mr. Donovan, I mean,” I said.

- Yeah…

“He told me that he wanted to create a new hell—he told me that he wanted to create a utopia that would satisfy every demon. He said that he was willing to die for the 27th legion,” I told her.

- Advisor Lee Ki-Young…

“I’m sorry, Miss Rimoura. Can I have some time alone?” I requested.

- Yes, of course.

Ah, why did you come here? Is it perhaps…”

- No, it’s nothing urgent. I was just personally curious about your plan moving forward. Anyway, don’t worry too much about it. Really… No one has any complaints about the incident. I’m serious.

“Thank you for telling me that, and I’ll let you know my plans as soon as possible,” I said.

- Okay. I’m sorry for worrying you.

“No, I should be the one who should apologize,” I said.

Tentacle-oura lowered her head and kissed my cheek. Then, she placed her head on my shoulder.

She was obviously trying to comfort me.

Of course, it didn’t really matter because I was relieved by the fact that I could spend some time alone once again. Not only was I enjoying my time alone, but I also needed time to organize the happenings so far.

In other words, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Rimoura’s visit was perfect.

‘I’m not really in the situation where I can do anything…’

I was drawing the overall plan in my mind, but the baton was now in the hands of the humans. The will to counterattack was definitely burning inside of them, so they would probably come here soon. I was sure that they already had plans on how they would wrap the entire arc beautifully, but of course, they still needed a day to freshen up.

I turned to the magic hologram while drinking the wine that Rimoura had poured for me.

I saw that the headquarters of the Continental Union was in a jubilant mood.

- Cheers! Cheers! Sing songs of victory! Let’s go, my friends and comrades! Sacrifices had to be made, but their sacrifices will forever be engraved on our hearts. Cheers! Cheers! For our victory!

The dwarves were singing songs of victory…

- Raise your glass! Let’s toast to victory and honor the victims! Let’s be thankful for our small but huge victory.

The humans were solemnly celebrating their victory…

The atmosphere wasn’t that laid back, but they were celebrating their victory to improve the overall mood of the base.

Anyway, they needed a moment like this because they were exhausted mentally and physically. I was sure the command center had no choice but to do this, and I would have made a similar decision if I were in their shoes.

It was unfortunate that I couldn’t watch them up close, but even from afar, I could tell that they were excited. Of course, the ones who kept on praising Kim Hyun-Sung stood out the most.

- Thank you. Thank you… very much.!

‘Yeah, you should be thankful.’

- For the new hero of mankind…! For all the future battles…!

‘The atmosphere is really nice.’

- For the swordsman of light…! For the swordsman of light…!

‘That’s a nice nickname. Swordsman of Light…! It suits you, Hyun-Sung! Can you hear them, Hyun-Sung?’

- Sing for the hope of sunset!

‘Hope of Sunset, so that’s the name of that ultimate move? It was so powerful…’

- For the Sworsdman of Sunset…!

‘Wow, this is nice.’

The human race had just won their very first victory against the demons after suffering a one-sided beatdown all this while. When all hope was lost, the hero of mankind appeared and made quick work of one of the Four Heavenly Kings.

It wasn’t strange that they were excited.

‘Yeah, I was waiting for those reactions…!’

Honestly, Kim Hyun-Sung hadn’t been that impactful recently.

Of course, people were starting to recognize him slowly but surely, but it was undeniable that his presence was tiny until now.

He was so low-key that people were saying that they couldn’t understand why I was working under Kim Hyun-Sung.

Some of them even made terrible comments, like how Kim Hyun-Sung was a mere puppet and I was the actual owner of the Blue Guild.

Therefore, I couldn’t help but cheer when I saw that the people were finally acknowledging his abilities.

People would normally expect a hero to step up whenever the world was suffering, and Kim Hyun-Sung satisfied the prerequisites necessary to become a hero. In addition, he was the medium that would unify the continent once more, so he was important.

I didn’t like the burden of being the hero of mankind, so Kim Hyun-Sung stepped up at the right time.

I had basically given half of my burden to Kim Hyun-Sung, but ironically, he looked as if he had let go of all his burdens.

Of course, he was sitting too far away, so I couldn’t really see his face, but he didn’t look anxious anymore. He looked carefree, which explained his current mood.

He was definitely uncomfortable with the fact that I got corrupted, and the only reason he could be in that mood was…

‘I’ll trust you.’

It was all because he believed that I would hold out until he arrived…

The others didn’t look all that different. I couldn’t really hear what Kim Hyun-Sung was saying, but I had an idea about what he was saying based on the expressions of the people around him.

Fortunately, Park Deok-Gu’s loud voice was finally helpful.

- So you’re saying that… our hyung-nim is still fighting?

I was sure he was telling them about the time I visited him in his consciousness.

- Hyung-nim visited you? He tapped your chest and told you that he trusts you?!

I felt like he was telling them things that they didn’t have to know…

- Wait, so you two watched the sunset together?

He was telling them every single detail…

- The skill you used to defeat that demon was a gift from hyung-nim? Is that right?

He was so loud that he was practically shouting, and the entire base could probably hear him.

‘That pig…’

I wasn’t sure why, but the female adventurers started gathering around Kim Hyun-Sung, and for some reason, his stories boosted the morale of the female adventurers.

Their ardor to save Father Lee Ki-Young by any means necessary quickly spread throughout the entire base.
