I'm Really Not the Demon God's Lackey我真不是邪神走狗

It was okay, especially since I came from My House of Horrors (top tier) that a mindless slice of life comedy was pretty good to wash away my awkwardness each time I see a mirror.

So this is a one gimmick work, the "comedy" here is based on the misunderstanding between the MC and the cast and in this case, the misunderstanding (to a point) is understandable because the books the MC reads transforms into something else when given to the customers that visit his bookstore.

There would be times when the MC would handle something big like a fight but he would be conveniently dreaming all the time, all the damned time! So he's never aware of all the abnormal things he does or encounters. But fine, the author wants to stretch the gimmick out (I'm at c257).

But I had to drop this since at one point he started selling something else other than books and let's just say it's very unhygienic and the misunderstanding can't be explained anymore and so now it's the "author's will" instead of the "MC's will" or "the story's narrative/plot". Now it's just the author writing whatever he wants. And there's usually a "rule of cool" where sometimes, things don't have to make complete sense as long as the story delivers cool shit, or fun shit, or if the atmosphere at that moment becomes perfect if you just stretch things a bit. But this story (that part specifically to be fair) isn't funny, it wasn't cool, it wasn't atmospheric. So to me it was just a glaring example of incompetence since it made no sense.

Minor spoiler about the specific part that made me drop it

This novel has a manhua adaptation now. It's up to around 90 as of writing.

Mini-review: Quality novel with some minor flaws until later parts, where quality dropped. Pretty good world building and elegant plot development. Smart faceslaping, build on misunderstandings and coincidences (with hidden implications). Have elements of horror and mystery.

More of a venting:
Very excellent novel... until late 300 chapters (456 is the last chapter). I don't know what happened, but it as though author lost interest and decided to end it, while being at least somewhat responsible, but without previous passion and hard work it's not the same. Or another author finished it (it happens with chinese novels sometimes).

Anyway, it is finished and these last several dozens of chapters are okay, but they very much lacking previous meticulous plot building. It's all happened possibly because of some subpar choices in story development in chapters just before worsened quality.

There were also some very mild "patriotism eruptions" in the later chapters, despite author being very respectful to all cultures most of the novel (which is why they are more glaring, despite being mild). And increased use of some usual chinese tropes. That's why different author is one of my suspects.

It's pretty sad, actually. If quality was maintained and resolution was more complete and gradual, I would have confidently declared this novel one of the best chinese novels that I ever read (worse that Lord of the Mysteries, but almost at Reverend Insanity level).

If we talking about flaws that were separate from issues with the later parts, then its some specific characters acted somewhat too arrogant and self-confident (to unrealistic degree) to magnify novel admittedly pretty smart faceslaping. And, also, introduction of some villian characters are not smooth and gradual enough.

This book is the epitome of misunderstanding just like the song Darkness in case of double entendre and I like both.

I was disappointed beyond belief at how this novel ended now I am just going to forget this novel
