【A new work from the author of 'My Senior Brother is Too Steady'!】

In the instant the Earth exploded, the fear of death finally transformed into physical torment, the agony of being scorched seared into the deepest recesses of Yang Ming's memory.

“The universe is the abyss.”

Yang Ming murmured softly among the stars.

[PS: Not a game narrative; early game settings will have a complete logical explanation later in the plot. Starting anew on a different track, this isn't in the style of previous works so don't promote it in the old way, treat me as a newcomer. Just entering the domain of interstellar sci-fi, corrections on details are welcome. ] Collapse

Based on netizen discussions and reviews, "深渊独行" (Walking Alone in the Abyss) is a fascinating but controversial novel. It is the acclaimed author's ambitious, yet flawed, foray into the hard sci-fi genre. The consensus is that it is a unique work, but one that may not appeal to all readers due to its niche style and execution.

Here is a synthesis of what netizens think.

    ---

    ## 📖 Premise

The story follows **Yang Ming**, who is killed when Earth is destroyed by a mysterious high-energy attack. He awakens 30 years in the past as "Hampton," a low-ranking crew member on a research vessel. He realizes this ship and its crew are the setting for a dangerous dungeon from the immersive online game he was obsessed with in his past life. Yang Ming must use his foreknowledge to navigate a world of genetic experiments, political intrigue, and

    ## 👍 What Netizens Like

    * **A Genuinely Unique and Ambitious Work**: The novel is praised as "pure-blood science fiction". It's a classic "space opera" that is very different from the author's previous, more popular works. This attempt to break into a new genre is seen as a courageous and innovative move.
    * **Award-Winning & Recognized**: The novel's quality was officially recognized when it was selected for the China Writers Association's 2023 Excellent Online Literary Works and won a gold award in the inaugural Qidian Science Fiction "Qimingxing" Awards.
    * **Atmospheric & Thematically Deep**: The story is noted for its oppressive, survival-focused atmosphere. The author intentionally explores weighty philosophical themes, with the core concept described as an exploration of "logic" and "law" as the ultimate AIs.
    * **A "Cult Classic" in its Niche**: The author himself admits it is a "niche" book with a limited audience. However, for readers who connect with its unique style and themes, it is considered a masterpiece.

    ---

    ## 👎 What Netizens Dislike

    * **A Lack of Excitement**: Some critics find the novel "neither hardcore, nor exciting, nor humorous," feeling it lacks the compelling hooks and engaging pace of the author's earlier books.
    * **Messy Execution**: The narrative is described as having a "clunky" writing style with abrupt scene transitions that can make it difficult to read smoothly. The story is also seen as a bit of a "hodgepodge" of sci-fi tropes like mechs, gene evolution, and artificial intelligence.
    * **Disappointing Ending**: Several reviews mention the novel's ending felt rushed or unsatisfactory. Some felt it "fizzled out" or "ran out of steam," while the author himself noted he ended the series on his own terms with a completed arc.

    ---

    ## ⚖️ Final Verdict

    * **For Hardcore Sci-Fi Fans**: Yes. If you crave a unique, atmospheric space opera that explores big ideas, this is a rewarding read, despite its flaws.
    * **For Casual Readers**: Probably not. The book is known for its slow pace, dark atmosphere, and a less conventional plot structure that may not be accessible to everyone.
    * **For Author's Existing Fans**: Approach with caution. It's a major departure from *My Senior Brother is Too Steady*, so go in expecting a completely different experience.

The translator is splitting the raw chapters in half it seems. The mtl chaps are longer and the work is finished.

The MC died and isekaid into a point some 30 years before his death, into the world of a videogame that was actually true - the Earth was destroyed by the forces of that game. The MC got forced into a genetic experiment and gained some physical ability, his only cheat other than general knowledge from the game. He must escape, change his identity, and establish himself in a galactic world of various empires.

The MC is interesting, but not perfectly written. We know his general goal is to save the earth, his family and friends, but other than a mention or 2, is pretty focused on his tasks but never mulls on it. We can only really view his actions towards working for that goal. There are some bedroom escapades here and there, but no harem and no female lead that sticks. Not to where I've read anyhow.

There is some humor, some space battles, some mystery, some just plain old tasking. Another person compared it to the "Legendary Mechanic" and I suppose there are some common elements there. AS is not LM, few novels are that good. Anyhow this is a better than merely decent read, and it should only work out to be a mere 1k or so chapters on ranobes, so a quick read light novel to get through.

This is some good shit. I'm 50 chapters in and its shaping up to be a promising space adventure somewhat reminiscent of the middle stages of The Legendary Mechanic which is my favorite webnovel of all time. I also enjoyed the author's other book a lot, so I went into this one with a positive bias.

The story mostly takes place in space, where there are three main advanced intergalactic empires that are in political/economic/idealogical conflict, along with smaller independent factions that have their own missions. There are no game elements beyond the introduction, and no system.

The MC starts out in space prison, where he was being held due to being involved with secret mutation experiments. The empire he works for wants him to take the fall and stay in prison to hide the illegal experiments, the second empire wants to buy his freedom and use him to politically/legally embarrass and pressure the previous empire, the third empire has insider information that he was actually a participant in the mutation experiment and wants to break him out to dissect him for the research results. I wont give further spoilers, but lets just say the MC absolutely earns his "Cunning Protagonist" tag getting out of this one. He joins up independently with space pirates and uses his wits and strength to gather allies and resources while avoiding the big fish until he is strong enough to be taken seriously.

The best aspect of this book is the intelligent characters, and higher level conflicts. There aren't any direct antagonists to the main character, everyone that opposes him has their own story and is just doing their job or acting in their own interests. It's something that sounds simple but a lot of webnovels tend to struggle with 1 dimensional allies and enemies that only exist to create conflicts for the MC to solve, and this is where the author really shows his talent and experience from previous writing.

At the time of writing this review the novel is sitting at only 3.6 stars which is absolutely criminal in my opinion, I recommend reading through the introductory prison arc at the very least (~25ish chapters)

He's absolutely right. The Legendary Mechanic is unquestionably one of the finest novels I've ever read. I put it up there with the Wheel of TIme (Jordan), Brust's Taltos series, Duncan's Seventh Sword, Benedict Jacka's Alex Verus.

He's right. The Legendary Mechanic is a fantastic book, and one of my favorites. This novel, Abyss Solo, is also very good and it is similar in some ways to The Legendary Mechanic. I've read AS up to what Ranobes has, but the chapters in the raw mtl are longer.

            https://ixdzs.tw/read/462461/p135.html

As you can see, I'm only 135 chapters in the mtl, and it is almost 500 chaps, finished. Looks like the translator is splitting the chapters in half in this site.
