Chapter 356: Reversing the Xuanhuang Heart Refinement Mantra

But then, as Li Fan sought answers regarding heart refinement, a flash of insight crossed his mind.

A clarity emerged, observing like a passerby, analyzing with reason.

“Is this my instinct?”

“Facing such a crisis, some might choose to risk entering the white mist, seeking a slim chance of survival within the dire situation.”

“Some might opt to kill their allies to strengthen themselves, using scheming methods to eliminate others first.”

“While some would rather die than harm their companions.”

“And I, subconsciously, choose to hide and wait, silently reaping the benefits after others finish their strife.”

“…”

“This is the optimal strategy based on the current situation, also influenced by my past experiences.”

“Each person’s choice is different. In my view, there’s no superiority or inferiority in character.”

“This is the essence of human nature.”

“Heart refinement, heart refinement…”

Li Fan pondered, murmuring to himself.

Forgetting the crisis outside the base from the roaring tide of demonic spirits, forgetting the imminent dire situation within the base.

As if ensnared in a trance, completely immersed in thoughts, not even the minor assaults of the demonic sounds could affect him.

Time passed swiftly in Li Fan’s contemplation.

Thus, it was the fiftieth day after the outbreak of the upheaval.

Leng Yingyi still hadn’t returned, striving to prolong the endurance as much as possible.

After discussion, the group decided to abandon most of the area within outpost.

Only retaining some basic structures.

This way, the consumption rate of the Black Death Talisman could be reduced by nearly half.

Although the area for activity decreased significantly.

Compared to having more time alive, squeezing a bit was insignificant.

But the once familiar group now seemed slightly more guarded towards each other.

They maintained a courteous facade outwardly, but what they were truly thinking remained known only to themselves.

Undercurrents surged, hidden intentions lurked.

When Li Fan noticed the gradually unsettling atmosphere, he finally began to awaken from his daze under the instinctual alertness of his body.

With a slight sweep of his senses, Li Fan understood the current situation.

From ancient times to the present, such a scenario of being trapped in a dilemma, mutually killing for survival, was not uncommon.

Even Li Fan himself, upon understanding his current predicament, felt the emergence of killing intent.

This killing intent was his own will.

Not belonging to distractions, even the Xuanhuang Heart Refinement Mantra couldn’t eliminate it.

Li Fan carefully pondered the incessant thoughts surging in his mind.

“Survival is a human instinct. Killing for survival is following one’s will.”

“Following one’s will, following one’s will…”

Suddenly, Li Fan’s mind froze, repeatedly chanting this phrase inwardly.

After a long while, a strange light flashed in his eyes.

“Heart refinement, heart refinement. Always smooth sailing, how can it truly refine the heart?”

“To refine the Dao heart, perhaps one needs to endure adversity.”

“Adversity, opposition…”

As if lightning piercing through the mist, in an instant, Li Fan understood something.

“To attain longevity, one must defy the laws of heaven and earth.”

“And to refine the Dao heart…”

“One must defy one’s true intentions.”

“Perhaps I’ve been cultivating wrongly all this time.”

Li Fan’s eyes gradually brightened.

“To act as one pleases, to shatter all distractions, at best, it only reaches the level of the Clear Heart Mantra.”

“To truly cultivate the Xuanhuang Heart Refinement Mantra, one must refine the heart itself.”

“To resist one’s instinctual choices?”

At this thought, Li Fan felt a sudden clarity, sweeping away the knots in his heart.

The operation of the Heart Refinement Mantra became several times faster than before.

“It seems my accidental speculation was indeed correct.”

“Reversing the Dao heart refinement.”

“This method of cultivation is quite peculiar indeed.”

“In this crisis, if one wants to refine the heart through this method, they cannot act according to their instinctual thoughts.”

“It’s best to do the opposite.”

“The greater the difference from one’s true intentions, the more torment one’s heart endures, and the more remarkable the effects of the Heart Refinement Mantra cultivation.”

“So the best choice should be…”

Li Fan’s thoughts swiftly turned, and in an instant, he made a decision.

And the Heart Refinement Mantra, operating smoothly without hindrance, affirmed his speculation.

“However, is it worth it to do so?”

“In the evaluation of the Anchor Point, the Xuanhuang Heart Refinement Mantra is still below the Cloud Water Illusion Technique…”

After pondering for a moment, Li Fan made a decision.

Not long after, in the conference hall of outpost Base.

Li Fan convened the crowd and raised his doubts.

“Feasibility of forcibly returning to the Eternal Immortal Stronghold? Master Li, why do you ask about this?” questioned He Chen, a guardian soldier from the Qingxuan Sect, with some confusion.

But he quickly realized that Li Fan probably wanted to send someone to seek aid again.

His expression darkened somewhat, but he still answered truthfully: “In recent days, the demon sound tide has shown no signs of abating, but rather an intensifying trend.”

“With our current strength, if we were to attempt to cross the white mist in the midst of the demon sound tide, I’m afraid…”

He Zhen shook his head repeatedly.

Another cultivator named Kong Yu from the Martial Hall also directly negated, “Absolutely not!”

“I know the strength of Captain Leng. If even he failed to seek help, we have no chance of success. It’s better to wait until the demon sound tide weakens before making a decision.”

The others also advised one after another.

“Let’s wait a little longer. Maybe Captain Leng will return soon?”

“Yeah, Master Li, it’s better not to make decisions hastily. As they say, there’s strength in numbers. Although our manpower in the stronghold is limited, we can still support each other. If we split up, once we encounter any unforeseen circumstances, we might be at a disadvantage!”

Even cultivators within the base who cooperated in the construction of the formation, even if they were in the Foundation Establishment Stage, still addressed Li Fan as “Master.”

Although Li Fan had always claimed that his proficiency in formations was ordinary and he didn’t deserve the title of “Master,” he vehemently declined.

But it couldn’t change the way these people addressed him.

Over time, he could only silently accept it.

At this moment, seeing that all the cultivators had opposing opinions, Li Fan secretly thought, “Actually, my thoughts are the same as yours, but unfortunately, I have to conduct an experiment.”

“I can only go against the grain.”

But he didn’t argue with them, just waited until everyone quieted down, then looked at them seriously.

When the cultivators began to avoid his gaze, Li Fan spoke slowly, “Gentlemen, let’s be frank. Before the demon sound tide, a round trip from outpost base to the Eternal Immortal Stronghold took only two or three days.”

“Even with the current terrifying situation, it’s extremely difficult. If everything goes smoothly, the round trip would take at most ten days.”

“If Captain Leng doesn’t return soon, the result might be some mishap, with little hope of survival.”

“For us cultivators, struggling between life and death is common. There’s no need to be taboo about it.”

“However…”

Li Fan paused slightly, attracting the attention of all the cultivators.

With a solemn expression, he said, “We are all brothers and sisters of the Ten Thousand Immortals Alliance. If we die in a battle with the Five Elders’ Association, it can be considered a fitting end without regrets.”

“But if we perish in mutual slaughter, I’m afraid I won’t rest in peace.”

“To avoid such a situation, I believe we should seek help from the Eternal Immortal Stronghold again before our supplies run out.”

“This sudden attack by the demon sound tide is unprecedented in intensity. The Eternal Immortal Stronghold is probably too busy to send reinforcements now.”

“In a dire situation, waiting to die is not as good as taking a chance.”

Li Fan’s words were resolute, but the cultivators present showed strange expressions upon hearing them.

Everyone understands the reasoning, but the strongest within outpost base, Captain Leng Yingyi, has already encountered unexpected events within this demon sound tide.

Who can guarantee that they can accomplish what even Leng Yingyi couldn’t?

Staying inside the base, one can still eke out a living and survive a while longer.

But once outside the base, facing the white mist and the black tide, it’s likely an immediate death sentence.

What you, Li Fan, are saying so resolutely, isn’t it an attempt to incite us to our deaths?

Could it be that you would risk your life and personally take action?

All the cultivators present thought so.

However, it hadn’t reached the point of open confrontation yet. They glanced at each other, and Kong Yu cleared his throat, intending to persuade again.

However, what Li Fan said next made them all stand up in astonishment.

“Captain Leng, in order to protect us all, has probably already perished within the demon sound tide.”

“I have long been hesitant.”

“I also know seeking help is extremely perilous. If any of you were to fall because of me, I would be even more ashamed to face everyone.”

“Alone, I will go to the Eternal Immortal Stronghold to seek help.”

“If I don’t die, I will surely find a way for you all!”

Li Fan’s words were decisive, his expression determined.

Kong Yu, He Chen, and others never expected this young formation master to make such a decision.

They looked at each other, doubting if they had misheard.

But seeing Li Fan’s firm gaze and expression, they had no more doubts and were instead shocked.

As the master who built the Tianxuan Locking Spirit Formation, Li Fan, although only in the Foundation Establishment Stage, held the highest position within outpost base.

Because all the cultivators present, whether from the Azure Mystery Army or other departments like the Martial Hall, came here to assist Li Fan in building the formation.

If he were to insist on sending out more cultivators for help, citing “the construction of the Tianxuan Locking Spirit Formation cannot be delayed, and if I were to fall, it would inevitably delay the progress of the formation,” then in the end, most of them would have to comply.

But now, he didn’t do that.

Instead, he voluntarily took on this almost suicidal mission to seek a way out for everyone.

Putting personal life and death aside, selflessly…

Is there really such a person in the world?

Isn’t this what the sages of ancient times were like?

After spending so much time with him before, they couldn’t believe they hadn’t noticed?!

It seems that only in times of life and death can one see a person’s true nature.

And as they recalled their own despicable thoughts, they couldn’t help but feel ashamed.

Under this self-reproach, they earnestly tried to persuade him.

“Master Li, why go this far! Although the situation is dire, it’s not to the point where you need to risk everything.”

“Yes, Master, please think twice. Dealing with both the demonic sound tides and the white mist is too dangerous! The odds are against you!”

Facing everyone’s dissuasion, Li Fan resolutely said, “My mind is made up, you needn’t say more.”

“You’ve been in the Abyss of Roaring Depths for years, so you have rich experience in surviving amidst the demonic sound tides and the white mist. If you really care, why not tell me all the precautions I need to take on the road, so I have a better chance of coming back alive?”

Li Fan said nonchalantly.

The others pretended to be reserved and tried to persuade him again, but seeing that they couldn’t change Li Fan’s determination, they could only sigh.

While feeling relieved, they also eagerly shared their survival experiences in the Abyss of Roaring Depths.

Li Fan listened attentively and remembered them all.

Then, carrying the supplies needed to survive twenty days alone in the white mist, under the reluctant gazes of everyone, he set foot on the lonely road to the Eternal Immortal Stronghold.

It is worth mentioning that perhaps moved by Li Fan’s righteousness, He Chen, a guardian soldier from the Qingxuan Sect, decided to accompany him.

However, after praising the other’s noble intentions, Li Fan still refused his kindness.

In the other’s eyes full of admiration and touched emotions, Li Fan put on the Black Light Talisman, identified the position of the Broken Palm Immortal City in the vast white mist, and turned into a stream of light, disappearing into it.

The other cultivators in output base watched Li Fan’s disappearing figure, their faces showing various expressions.

“I never expected that in today’s cultivation world, there would still be such a person of high integrity. It’s truly embarrassing for us.”

“I’ve lived for three hundred and forty-eight years. It’s only today that I’ve seen such a person, which is a great regret.”

“If Master Li doesn’t die, from now on, I will surely look up to him.”

After a moment of silence, everyone couldn’t help but express their heartfelt admiration.

“Hmph!”

Only He Chen looked disdainful, gave everyone a disdainful look, and left in a huff.

The faces of the others were more or less embarrassed.

They dispersed like birds and beasts dispersing.

Pls like or give thanks to Crisp009 who translated this chapter in 2025 Oct 11 when mtl was the only option

But I like this chapter, MC is usually quite pragmatic and won’t do anything if it has negative consequences, he might do things on a whim, such as help someone when the only negative consequences is using up time, but he won’t help someone just to be kind and make himself lose out to help them

This chapter MC is going against his pragmatic nature to be able to truly be in control of his actions in the future, he might start to become more pragmatic, but as long as the author can continue to properly explain why MC does things I won’t complain

(And yes I know I previously complained about the author explains to much, but there is a balance, and so far this story is amazing even if I question things alot)

Chapter 356 — The Reversal of the Xuanhuang Heart-Refining Art

But then, as Li Fan sought the true meaning of “refining the heart,” a sudden spark of insight flashed through his mind—an illumination that pierced the confusion.

His thoughts became crystalline, detached, like a traveler gazing coldly upon the world—calm, rational, unclouded.

“So this… is the instinct of my heart?”

“When faced with a dead end, some might risk everything and plunge into the white mist, gambling for a sliver of life amid certain death.”

“Others might choose the path of ‘better my friend die than I,’ striking first, plotting and killing to seize advantage.”

“Still others would rather die than betray their comrades.”

“And I… my first instinct is to conceal myself, to wait in silence, letting others fight and die—then harvest the spoils.”

    “……”

“This, given the situation, is the optimal choice. It also reflects the life I’ve lived until now.”

“Each person’s choice differs; to me, it is simply a matter of temperament—neither good nor evil.”

“This, then, is the true heart of man.”

“Refining the heart… refining the heart…”

Li Fan muttered softly, lost in thought.

He forgot the demonic chorus raging beyond their stronghold, forgot the desperate tension within the collapsing walls.

He seemed entranced, his consciousness fully immersed. Even several small-scale attacks from the demonic sound waves failed to disturb him.

Time passed swiftly within his realization.

Thus, on the fiftieth day after the outbreak of the demonic tide—

Leng Yingyi still had not returned. To extend their dwindling survival time as much as possible, the group decided—after much discussion—to abandon most of the Jiaxu Stronghold.

Only the essential structures would remain.

In this way, the consumption of the Black Death Talismans could be reduced by nearly half.

Though the area of activity was greatly reduced, compared to a few more days of life, a bit of crowding was nothing worth complaining about.

Yet among the survivors, something had changed.
Beneath the courteous smiles lingered subtle vigilance; what lay in each person’s heart, only they themselves knew.

    An undercurrent stirred—hidden killing intent.

When Li Fan finally sensed this tension, when his instincts began to whisper of danger, he slowly awoke from his trance.

With a brief glance, he understood the situation at once.

From ancient times to now, when men are trapped in desperate straits, the struggle for survival often ends in bloodshed among companions.

Even Li Fan himself, once he clearly understood their plight, felt the stirrings of murderous intent.

That killing intent arose from his very heart—it was not an illusion, nor could even the Xuanhuang Heart-Refining Chant purge it.

He quietly examined the thoughts rising within his mind.

“To live is the most primal instinct. To kill for life—that too follows the heart’s intent.”

“Follow the heart… follow the heart…”

Suddenly, he froze, repeating those words silently within.

After a long while, a strange light flashed across his eyes.

“To refine the heart, yet walk always in ease—how can that truly refine it?”

“To temper the Dao-heart, one must be honed in adversity.”

    “Adversity… reversal…”

It was as if a bolt of lightning split open the fog.
In that instant, Li Fan understood.

“To prove immortality is to defy the laws of Heaven and Earth.”

    “Then to refine the Dao-heart…”

“…one must defy one’s own true nature.”

“Perhaps all this time, my cultivation has been mistaken.”

    His eyes slowly brightened.

“To follow every desire, to crush stray thoughts—that is but the level of the Clear Heart Mantra.”

“To truly practice the Xuanhuang Heart-Refining Chant, one must temper the heart itself—fight against instinct.”

“To oppose my own natural choices…?”

As the thought arose, Li Fan felt a sudden clarity. The knot within his heart dissolved entirely.

The circulation of the Heart-Refining Chant accelerated, several times faster than before.

“So my wild guess was right after all…”

“To refine the Dao-heart through reversal…”

“What a peculiar path of cultivation this is.”

“Take this Jiaxu crisis for example. If I wish to temper my heart, I cannot follow my instinctive plan.”

    “I must do the opposite.”

“The greater the difference from my natural desire, the more torment my heart endures—and the stronger the refinement.”

    “Then the best choice is…”

His mind turned sharply, and in an instant he had made his decision.

The ever-smoother flow of the Heart-Refining Chant confirmed his realization.

“Only… is this truly worth it?”

    “The Xuanhuang Heart-Refining Chant—even in Zhen’s evaluation—it surpasses the Cloudwater Dream Art…”

After a moment of contemplation, Li Fan made his choice.

    ---

Not long after, inside the Jiaxu Stronghold’s council hall—

Li Fan gathered the others and posed a question.

“The feasibility of returning to Eternal Immortal Rampart by force? Master Li, why do you ask such a thing?”
The Qingxuan guard, He Chen, looked puzzled.

But soon his face darkened, thinking Li Fan meant to send another for aid.

“The demonic tide hasn’t weakened at all—in fact, it’s grown fiercer by the day,” he said grimly.
“With our current strength, to cross the white mist amid such a tide would be…”

    He shook his head repeatedly.

Another cultivator, Kong Yu of the Martial Hall, a Nascent Soul expert, flatly refused.
“Absolutely not! I know Fellow Daoist Leng’s strength—if even he failed to return, what chance have we? We should wait until the tide wanes before deciding.”

The others quickly echoed his words.

“Let’s wait. Perhaps Captain Leng will be back soon.”

“Yes, Master Li, don’t make such a rash decision. Even if our numbers are few, we can still watch each other’s backs. If we separate now, any mishap could spell disaster.”

Even though Li Fan had long protested that his skill in formations was unworthy of the title, everyone—whether from the Qingxuan Army or the various halls—still called him Master Li.
After so long, he could only accept it.

Now, hearing their objections, Li Fan thought to himself: In truth, I agree with you. But for this experiment… I must do the opposite.

He did not argue. Instead, when silence finally fell, he looked solemnly upon them.

When they began to avert their gazes under his steady stare, Li Fan finally spoke.

“My friends, let us speak plainly. Before the demonic tide, a normal round trip from Jiaxu Stronghold to Eternal Immortal Rampart took no more than two or three days.”

“Even with the tide raging, even through the mist, if all went well, it should not take more than ten.”

“If Captain Leng has not returned by now… we must face the truth—something has gone wrong.”

“We cultivators defy Heaven for our fate; life and death are common as breath. There is no need to shy from it.”

“In fact, before he departed, Captain Leng left certain instructions with me.”

    That was not a lie.
Several Qingxuan soldiers present had witnessed it, and their eyes dimmed as they recalled.

    Silence filled the hall.

Li Fan continued, “Our supplies are nearly exhausted, and the demonic tide shows no sign of ceasing…”

“When the last of our resources runs dry—what then?”

“Perhaps we won’t even last that long. As the Black Death Talismans dwindle, some among us may soon be unable to suppress the urge to kill for survival.”

At these words—so bluntly exposing the darkness in their hearts—several cultivators shifted uneasily.

“Impossible! Absolutely not!” one protested. “Master Li, you can rest easy. The Qingxuan Army values duty above life itself.”

“That’s right! We swore to protect you. Whoever dares harm you will have to step over our corpses first!”

Their righteous declarations filled the hall, while the others—members of the Martial and Mechanist Halls—watched tensely.

“Master Li…” one began, but Li Fan raised his hand and smiled faintly.

“There’s no need for such posturing,” he said gently. “Even ants struggle to live—how could we cultivators be any different?”

“To reach our level, who among us has not faced countless perils?”

“The desire to live is no sin.”

    “But—”

He paused, his tone deepening, drawing every gaze.

“We are all brothers of the Ten-Thousand Immortals Alliance. To die battling the Five Elders’ forces—such a death would be honorable, without regret.”

“But to perish in mutual slaughter… I could never rest in peace.”

“To prevent that, I believe we must act before our supplies run out—by returning to Eternal Immortal Rampart and seeking aid once more.”

“As the Qingxuan brothers said, the current tide is unprecedented. The Rampart may already be struggling to defend itself. We cannot wait for salvation.”

“In desperate times, waiting for death is worse than fighting for life.”

    His words struck like thunder.
And yet, the others’ faces twisted with unease.

They understood the logic—but if even Leng Yingyi, their mightiest, had fallen in the demonic tide, how could any of them succeed?

To stay meant perhaps a few more days of life.
To leave meant likely death in the white mist.

You speak so nobly, they thought, but you’re just trying to send us to die. Surely you won’t risk yourself.

Just as Kong Yu opened his mouth to dissuade him again, Li Fan’s next words froze them all.

“Captain Leng sacrificed himself to protect me. I can no longer bear that debt.”

“I know this journey is fraught with peril. If more of you were to die for my sake, I could never forgive myself.”

    “So, I have decided—”

Suppressing his discomfort, Li Fan spoke words that defied his own Dao-heart.

“I shall go alone, to Eternal Immortal Rampart—to seek rescue.”

“If I survive, I will return with a path to salvation for all of you.”

His voice rang firm and resolute.

Kong Yu, He Chen, and the others stared, speechless. For a moment, they doubted their ears.

But when they saw the determination in his eyes, disbelief gave way to awe.

Though Li Fan’s cultivation was only at the Golden Core stage, as the formation master who had built the Heavenly Profound Spirit-Sealing Array, his status here was supreme.

If he had chosen instead to command them—to insist others go while he stayed behind—they would have had no choice but to obey.

Yet now, he was volunteering for a near-certain death, seeking only to win them a chance to live.

To place his life aside, acting from pure selflessness—

Was there truly such a man in this world?
A sage of the ancients could hardly surpass him.

They recalled all their earlier selfish thoughts, and shame burned within them.

One by one, they spoke earnestly:

“Master Li, there’s no need for this! The situation is dire, yes, but not beyond hope!”

“Please reconsider—facing both the demonic tide and the white mist alone is suicide!”

    Li Fan only smiled faintly.

“My mind is set. Say no more.”

“You who have lived long in this Abyss, you know better than anyone how to survive the mist and the demonic tide. If you truly wish me to live, then share with me what you know—so I might have a better chance to return alive.”

So calm, so resolute—his words silenced them all.

At last, seeing his will unshakable, they sighed and began to teach him every technique, every bit of experience they possessed for surviving in the Shizha Abyss.

Li Fan listened intently, memorizing every detail.

Then, carrying enough supplies for twenty days alone within the mist, he stepped beyond the barrier—beneath countless reluctant gazes—onto the road toward Eternal Immortal Rampart.

Moved by his righteousness, Qingxuan guard He Chen even offered to accompany him.
But after praising his noble spirit, Li Fan gently refused.

Under the guard’s gaze—filled with reverence and emotion—Li Fan donned his Black Death Talisman, oriented himself toward the distant broken city within the mist, and transformed into a streak of light that vanished into the pale void.

The cultivators left behind watched his silhouette fade, each wearing a different expression.

“Who would’ve thought that in this age, such a man still exists… I feel ashamed to live beside him.”

“I have lived three hundred and forty-eight years—and only today have I seen such virtue. What a pity…”

“If Master Li survives, from this day forth, I will follow him without question.”

One after another, they spoke with genuine emotion.

Only He Chen gave a disdainful snort and turned away, sleeves flicking as he departed.

The others looked awkwardly at one another.

Then, one by one, they dispersed—like startled birds.

What's the point of contradicting his own nature intentionally? I often see in novels that to achieve a strong dao heart, a person needs to see through his own true nature and doesn't go against it for the sake of external environment.

contradicting his own nature would be perilous to his survival, however i suppose he has to overcome this peril to have a stronger dao heart, not that(imo) it wont become stronger as his cultivation progresses, it is that he would have an edge, a much stronger dao heart than anyone else in the same realm.i guess it is like going out of our comfort zone, i think there could be other methods of heart refinement ,like going through pain and understanding it, something like that, but this is what we have atm

Contradicting his nature won't place him in a perilous situation, it will at most cloud his judgment and deviate from the right path (or his own path of his original nature). Finding his true nature and not succumbed to other temptations is what can be considered training his heart nature.
