Chapter 11: Little Brats

Six months passed quickly, and Su Hao had grown a bit taller, from the height of a three-year-old to that of a three-and-a-half-year-old.

Su Hao found this absolutely unreasonable. Over the past year, he had paid close attention to maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. Surely, he should have grown taller and wider by now!

"Where did all that meat I ate go?" he wondered.

He even began to suspect that the [Best Nutritional Formula for Children] stored in the Marble space was a scam, despite the "Experts Recommended" label beneath it that had reassured him.

Shaking off those thoughts, Su Hao glanced at Wu Yuntian, who sat nearby. Ever since Su Hao had mentioned learning martial arts half a year ago, Wu Yuntian had been coming and going early and late, constantly busy with something unknown. Every night, he barely exchanged a few words with Su Hao before quickly eating and heading to bed.

That evening, just as Wu Yuntian was about to get up and leave after dinner, Su Hao quickly called out, "Father, you promised to teach me martial arts. It's been half a year now. When are we going to start?"

Wu Yuntian paused, as if suddenly remembering this matter, and looked at his son. After a slow moment, he said, "Ah, that... Well, we'll start tomorrow. Meet me at the valley early in the morning."

"Alright!" Su Hao nodded eagerly, his eyes glowing brighter under the flickering firelight.

The next morning, Su Hao arrived at the outpost’s valley. However, he didn’t see his father there. Instead, a little girl, about four years old, was leading two younger boys toward him. The girl had twin ponytails bouncing as she walked. She had a delicate and pretty face, with bright, round eyes that hinted she would grow into a real beauty. The two boys following her looked to be at least five years old, both taller than her by a head and chubby in build. Despite their size, they followed the little girl obediently like loyal sidekicks.

As soon as Su Hao saw these three little brats, his head began to ache. ‘Little brats... I hate dealing with them.’ he thought.

The little girl was named He Qingqing, the daughter of the leader of Chashan Outpost, which was the squad of warriors stationed to defend the Outpost-village. Her father, He Jianyong, held significant authority and was known for his decisive command. Naturally, He Qingqing was treated with special favor. No one would dare disrespect her, and given her sweet and lovable appearance, she was adored by everyone in the village, as though she were the center of their world.

In front of the adults, He Qingqing acted like the perfect, well-behaved girl, but among the group of children, she played the role of a big sister.

The two boys following her, her little sidekicks, were also sons of the Chashan Outpost warriors. The taller one, nicknamed "Snotty," was named Lu Hongtao, and the rounder one was named Li Cunzhi, often called "Little Fatty." These two seemed to have their own plans, as they followed He Qingqing around like puppies every day, obeying her every word. They looked like classic "nice guys," perhaps hoping to cultivate a childhood sweetheart relationship with her.

But looking at these two jokers, Su Hao thought they were probably in for a rude awakening in a few years.

"Xiangwu, what are you doing? Come with us to the creek to catch fish!" He Qingqing called out as she walked up to Su Hao, acting like a little boss.

Su Hao immediately shook his head and refused, "No thanks. You all can go ahead without me."

He Qingqing put her hands on her hips and angrily said, "Wu Xiangwu, you dare refuse me? Do you believe I won’t have Snotty and Fatty beat you up?"

Snotty and Little Fatty took a step forward, their eyes full of provocation and eagerness. They had never had the chance to beat up this slippery Wu Xiangwu before, and they were excited at the prospect.

Su Hao’s lips twitched as he replied, completely unfazed, "Miss Qingqing, I’m not refusing you. I just don’t play with idiots. If you want me to play with you, first prove that you’re not idiots."

The three of them were instantly furious at Su Hao’s words. Snotty and Little Fatty were about to charge forward and teach him a lesson, but He Qingqing stopped them. Wrinkling her cute nose, she retorted, "I’m not an idiot!"

The two sidekicks quickly chimed in.

"We’re not idiots either!"

"I’m not an idiot!"

Su Hao nodded in acknowledgment and said, "I can tell. But you’ll need to prove it. Have you figured out the question I asked you yesterday?"

He Qingqing immediately and proudly answered, "Of course! How could such a simple question stump me?"

Su Hao raised an eyebrow in disbelief. "Really? Let me ask again: What’s 5 + 7?"

He Qingqing eagerly replied, "12! It’s 12, right?" She crossed her arms proudly, waiting for Su Hao to praise her.

Su Hao looked at her with a hint of surprise and clicked his tongue in approval. "Oh∼ wow, not bad, Miss Qingqing."

"Of course! Now that I’ve proven I’m not an idiot, come play with us!" She quickly invited Su Hao again, hoping he would join her crew as her strategist and advisor.

But Su Hao shook his head again. "Although you got the answer right, it’s been too long. That doesn’t count anymore."

He Qingqing’s eyes widened in disbelief. "Why doesn’t it count? Then what do we do?"

"Same as always—I’ll ask you another question. If you answer it correctly, I’ll admit you’re not idiots, and I’ll play with you."

He Qingqing hesitated. "You can’t ask something too hard."

Su Hao nodded.

She added another condition, "And no math questions."

Su Hao nodded again.

He Qingqing, wrinkling her nose in nervousness, said, "Alright, ask away!"

"Okay, listen carefully. I’m going to ask a very simple question. You all know the answer." Seeing the three of them focused intently, Su Hao cleared his throat and asked, "Tell me, what kind of person gets sick but can’t see a doctor?"

He Qingqing’s eyes lit up with confidence, and she immediately answered, "That’s easy. I know this one. It’s bad people! Bad people get sick, and doctors won’t treat them."

But Su Hao shook his head. "Wrong. But you’re close."

"Wrong? Then what is it?"

"You have to figure it out on your own."

He Qingqing turned to Snotty Hao and Little Fatty. "You two answer!"

Little Fatty stammered, unable to say a word, while Snotty was too busy sniffling to think of an answer.

"You two idiots," He Qingqing stomped her foot in frustration. She guessed a few more answers, but Su Hao rejected them all, which left her on the verge of tears. In the end, she shot Su Hao a fierce glare.

"Xiangwu, just you wait. I’ll figure it out!" She threw out this threat before stomping off.

Her two sidekicks were alarmed. "Qingqing, we’re not going to catch fish anymore?"

He Qingqing turned back. "No, only idiots catch fish."

Snotty, left bewildered, turned to Little Fatty and asked, "So, are we still going to catch fish?"

Little Fatty called him an "idiot" and then chased after He Qingqing, shouting, "Qingqing, wait for me! I’ll think of an answer with you!"

Snotty shot Su Hao a fierce look before also running after them, yelling, "Me too! Me too!"

"Finally, they’re gone!" Su Hao sighed in relief. Dealing with little brats was harder than writing an essay. Back in his past life, if his younger brother, Luo Chaoxin, had been this annoying, Su Hao would’ve simply spankeld him. Unfortunately, in this life, with his skinny arms and legs, he couldn’t win in a fight. If he could, he definitely wouldn’t waste time talking.

....

A moment later, Wu Yuntian suddenly appeared beside Su Hao, curiously asking, "So, what kind of person gets sick but can’t see a doctor?"

Su Hao’s face darkened immediately. "Seriously, Father? Why are you getting involved in a question meant for children?"

Half a year passed quickly, and Su Hao grew a bit taller. His height went from a three-year-old's size to a three-and-a-half-year-old's size.

Su Hao thought this was unreasonable. In the past year, he had paid a lot of attention to his nutrition intake. He should have been taller and wider, right?

'Where did all the meat I ate go?'

He even suspected that the 'Best Nutritional Formula' recorded inside the marble space was fake. But the words 'expert recommended' couldn't be wrong, right?

Su Hao reeled in his thoughts and glanced at Wu Yuntian, who sat beside him. Ever since Su Hao brought up training half a year ago, he had constantly been leaving early and coming back late, doing who knows what. Every evening, he didn't talk with Su Hao at all. He would hastily eat and go to sleep.

This evening, just as Wu Yuntian was about to leave, Su Hao hurriedly said: ‘Father, what about your test to train me? A half-year has passed by. When are we going to start?’

Wu Yuntian paused and suddenly remembered that there had been a matter like that. Looking at his son, he slowly said: ‘That, huh. Then let's start tomorrow. Tomorrow morning, wait for me in the valley.’

‘Sure!’ Su Hao nodded his head, and his eyes brightened.

On the second day, early in the morning, Su Hao came to the outpost's valley, which was specifically used for drying grains. His father was nowhere to be seen, but he did see a four-year-old girl leading two boys toward Su Hao. The little girl's twin ponytails skipped up and down. She had a delicate look. Her eyes were bright and round. It was easy to tell she would be a beauty in the future. The two boys were at least five years old and were taller than her by a head. Born plump and sturdy, they looked like followers of the girl.

As soon as Su Hao saw these three brats, he felt a headache come on. Brats were always the most annoying.

The girl was called He Qingqing and was a daughter of Cha Mountain Outpost, specifically, she was the daughter of He Jianyong, the captain of the warriors stationed at Cha Mountain Outpost. Captain He Jianyong was very authoritative in this neck of the woods. One could imagine how specially treated his daughter was. Everyone had to give her some face. The most important part, though, was that He Qingqing herself was cute and lovely, and she spoke well. She was loved by everyone at the outpost and got praised to the heavens.

In front of adults, He Qingqing acted like an obedient daughter, but in front of the brats, she acted like a gangster big sister.

The two followers behind her were also sons of the Cha Mountain Outpost. The taller snot-nosed bugger was called Lu Hongtao. The fat one was called Li Cunzhi. The two were arguing about who knows what. They spent every day hovering around He Qingqing and listened to her every word like dogs. Perhaps they wanted to become childhood sweethearts with her?

As far as these two went, Su Hao figured that they would make zero progress after the next few years.

‘Xiangwu, what are you doing? C'mon, let's go fishing together!’ He Qingqing walked over to Su Hao, trying to act like a big kid.

Su Hao shook his head: ‘I won't go. Watch your step, I won't send you off!’

He Qingqing's hands went to her hips and angrily said: ‘Wu Xiangwu, you dare to reject me? Do you think I won't let snot-nose Tao and little fatty beat you?’

Snot-nosed bugger Lu Hongtao and little fatty Li Cunzhi took a step forward, their eyes filled with eagerness for him to try and provoke them. Wu Xiangwu was a slippery kid, and they hadn't beaten him before. They looked forward to it.

The corner of Su Hao's mouth twitched, but he fearlessly said: ‘Big sis Qingqing, it's not that I'm rejecting you. It's just that I never play with idiots. If you want me to play with you, you have to first prove that you're not idiots.’

The three were infuriated by Su Hao's words. Snot-nosed Tao and little fatty were just about to step forward and beat up Su Hao, but they were stopped by He Qingqing. She scrunched up her cute little nose and retorted: ‘I'm not an idiot!’

The two little followers immediately followed up.

    ‘We're not idiots!’ ‘Me neither!’

Su Hao nodded in agreement: ‘It's obvious, but can you prove it? Have you thought of the answer to yesterday's question?’

He Qingqing proudly said: ‘Of course. How could this kind of simple question challenge me?’

Su Hao had a disbelieving face: ‘Really? Then let me ask again, what is 5+7?’

He Qingqing replied: ‘12. It equals 12. I got it right, didn't I!’ After she said that, she proudly folded her arms across her chest and waited for Su Hao to praise her.

Su Hao looked at her in surprise and tsked: ‘Oho oho, not bad, young miss Qingqing.’

‘That's right! Since I've proved I'm not an idiot, let's go. Come play with us!’ He Qingqing hurriedly invited. She urgently wanted Su Hao to join her group and become her advising follower.

Su Hao shook his head again: ‘Although you answered, it's already been so long, so it doesn't count.’

He Qingqing's eyes widened: ‘Why doesn't it count? Then what should we do?’

‘Same rules. I'll ask another question. If you can answer it, that'll prove you're not idiots, and I'll play with you.’

He Qingqing hesitated before saying: ‘You can't ask something too difficult.’

    Su Hao nodded.

He Qingqing added a condition: ‘You can't ask a math question.’

    Su Hao still nodded.

He Qingqing wrinkled her nose and nervously said: ‘Then ask away!’

‘Listen well. The questions I ask are all simple. You know the answers.’ Seeing the three listening intently, Su Hao cleared his throat and said: ‘Question: what kind of person gets sick but can't see the doctor?’

He Qingqing rolled her eyes and immediately answered: ‘This is easy. I know this. It's a bad guy! Doctors won't cure bad guys.’

Unexpectedly, Su Hao shook his head: ‘Wrong, but you're not too far from the right answer.’

    ‘Wrong? Then what is it?’

‘You guys have to think of it yourselves.’

He Qingqing turned to snot-nose Tao and little fatty: ‘You guys answer.’

Little fatty rocked back and forth but couldn't say a word. Snot-nose Tao could only sniffle until the end.

‘You two idiots.’ He Qingqing angrily stomped and guessed a few more answers. All of them were rejected by Su Hao. She almost started to cry, and in the end, she gave Su Hao a vicious look.

‘Wu Xiangwu, you wait for me. I'll definitely think of it.’ She left with these threatening words.

The two followers were startled: ‘Qingqing, aren't we going fishing?’

He Qingqing responded: ‘We're not going. Only idiots go fishing.’

Snot-nose Tao didn't know what to think and turned to little fatty: ‘Little fatty, are we still going to go fishing?’

Little fatty called snot-nose Tao and then chased after He Qingqing and loudly shouted: ‘Qingqing, wait for me. I want to go with you.’

Snot-nose Tao turned to glare at Su Hao and also ran after He Qingqing, yelling: ‘Me too! Me too!’

‘Phew~ They're finally gone!’ To Su Hao, dealing with little brats was more difficult than dealing with a thesis. If his previous world's younger brother Luo Chaoxin dared to bother him, he would use action. But now he had skinny arms and legs and couldn't fight them. If he could use action, he definitely wouldn't use words.

    ...

After a while, Wu Yuntian suddenly appeared by Su Hao's side and curiously asked: ‘What kind of person can't be seen by a doctor?’

Su Hao's face filled with black lines. This was a children's riddle. Why was an old man like you joining in for the fun?

what kind of person gets sick but can’t see the doctor?

if you take it literally, then a blind person cannot see the doctor
If you take it as in "cannot go to the doctor", then it would be a paraplegic
if you take it in another way, then it could be the doctor himself - he cannot go to see the doctor, he is the doctor, so he is already at the doctor, and cannot go closer towards the doctor. This third answer is a bit convoluted and bullsht, but still technically correct.
