Chapter 919: Looked Down Upon
When Yang Haoran spoke these words, though his emotions weren't outwardly agitated, anyone could discern the anger and vexation in his tone.
"Haha, Emissary Yang, there's no need to get angry. From what I know of those two adults, their temperaments are indeed rather poor, and they spoil their precious son immensely. For the sake of that dear boy, they're capable of anything. They weren't targeting you, Emissary Yang, nor were they targeting the Underworld Office. Towards any person or any force, that couple would likely adopt the same attitude, so you needn't be upset over their demeanor at the time."
Sensing the vexation and fury in Yang Haoran's words, Xue Jie quickly smiled and spoke, attempting to pacify him.
"Master Xue doesn't quite understand me. With a temper like mine, how could I not get angry when something like this happens? Those two Demon Hunters from your association are simply unreasonable. Just because my friend isn't human but a demon, they insist on believing their son's disappearance is connected to my friend, and they even threatened me. If it were you, would you not flare up?"
To Yang Haoran's question, Xue Jie merely smiled, offering no reply.
"Sigh, it's also because I, Yang Haoran, couldn't defeat that couple. If my strength could surpass theirs, I would have definitely made a move right then. I wouldn't have let them leave until I'd beaten them black and blue, making them see clearly the consequences of threatening me."
Yi Jiao, who had kept her head bowed like a servant the entire time, couldn't help but feel a strong sense of contempt well up in her heart upon hearing Yang Haoran's words.
"You cowardly dog, bullying the weak and fearing the strong! You'd best pray you never fall into my hands in this lifetime, or I'll make your life a living hell. And you, you piece of trash Xue Jie, one day I'll make you kneel before me, weeping and begging for my mercy!"
As for Xue Jie, her resentment towards him was hardly a recent development. It was simply that, considering the potential benefits and her fear of Xue Jie's ruthless nature, she had never dared to show even a hint of her inner dissatisfaction.
Yang Haoran and Xue Jie, of course, had no idea what Yi Jiao was thinking at that moment. If they had, setting aside whether Yang Haoran would eradicate the root, Xue Jie, her very backer, certainly wouldn't have spared her. He might even have slaughtered her right in front of Yang Haoran.
After Yang Haoran's words fell, before Xue Jie could even open his mouth, Yang Haoran seemed to suddenly recall something amusing. The vexation on his face vanished, replaced by a smile, though it was a smile that gave off a sense of schadenfreude.
"Heh heh, I was worrying earlier about what to do if those two unreasonable Demon Hunters came back to bother me with their nonsense. But now, it seems I don't need to worry about that anymore."
Xue Jie naturally understood the meaning behind Yang Haoran's words.
"It's hard to say whether that couple is alive or dead right now. It's possible they're just temporarily trapped in some special place, unable to communicate with the outside world, which is why our Demon Hunter Guild can't get in touch with them."
Yang Haoran's eyebrow twitched slightly, then he smiled and asked Xue Jie.
"Heh heh, is Master Xue reminding me not to celebrate too soon?"
Xue Jie's expression shifted. He hadn't expected Yang Haoran to say such a thing, so he quickly began to explain.
"No, no, no, no, I had no such intention at all. Emissary Yang, please don't think that way. I was merely stating that such a possibility exists."
Hearing this, Yang Haoran offered a hollow smile and said no more.
Seeing this, Xue Jie quickly changed the subject, lest he provoke Yang Haoran and hinder the progress of their mission.
"Emissary Yang, when they left that day, did they mention where specifically they were going to inquire about their son's whereabouts? " Xue Jie asked.
"That couple saw me as a stumbling block on their path to finding their son. Do you think they would have told me such things? " Yang Haoran counter-questioned with a smile.
Xue Jie chuckled awkwardly. Upon reflection, it did make sense; anyone encountering such a situation likely wouldn't divulge much to the other party.
"I was presumptuous. After that, Emissary Yang, did you never see them again? " Xue Jie continued to ask.
Yang Haoran first gave Xue Jie a speechless glare, then finally spoke.
"They never came looking for me, so where would I go to see them?"
Xue Jie detected a hint of impatience in Yang Haoran's tone, so he decided to cease his inquiries. In his view, even if he continued to press, he likely wouldn't gain any useful information.
"Thank you, Emissary Yang, for telling me all this. The information you've provided is very helpful to me; it might even be key to figuring out this matter. I apologize for disturbing you today and taking up some of your time."
Xue Jie smiled apologetically, though to Yang Haoran, that expression of apology was utterly feigned, lacking even a shred of sincerity.
"Heh heh, it seems Master Xue specifically cornered me on the street today not to offer apologies, but to interrogate me. I actually believed your words before, thinking you came with sincerity. Now it seems I was too naive; Master Xue, your true intention is not in the wine."
Not only did Yang Haoran show no anger on his face, but he wore a smile, and his tone remained as calm as ever. Yet, the meaning of his words conveyed a strong dissatisfaction.
"Emissary Yang, your words are too harsh. Today, my main purpose was to bring this ill-behaved young lady to apologize to you. Inquiring about the two Demon Hunter sirs was merely a side note, an incidental question. As for interrogating you, Emissary Yang, I wouldn't dare. Our Demon Hunter Guild doesn't have that right, after all, Emissary Yang, you are a true Emissary of Death."
Xue Jie remained as polite to Yang Haoran as before, and his face still held the same smile. However, his words now seemed to carry a hint of mockery that hadn't been there previously.
Yang Haoran naturally caught the mockery in Xue Jie's words, but he didn't care. As for why Xue Jie's attitude had suddenly changed, in his opinion, it was probably because Xue Jie felt he could no longer extract any useful information from him — in short, he was deemed worthless, hence the subtle shift in demeanor.
Although he didn't care internally, Yang Haoran deliberately displayed displeasure on his face, then, under Xue Jie's gaze, he tore open space and stepped into the spatial rift.
"Emissary Yang, I'll treat you to a drink another day."
Watching the spatial rift rapidly heal, Xue Jie called out to Yang Haoran from outside it, but received no reply from Yang Haoran.
Not until the spatial rift had fully closed did the smile on Xue Jie's face slowly recede, a cold glint flashing through his eyes.
"The Underworld Office is indeed formidable, but if the current Underworld Office were to be replaced in this chaotic era, then you Emissaries of Death would be in deep trouble. At that time, we'll see how you can still be so arrogant, hmph!"
Xue Jie muttered to himself, staring at the spot where the spatial rift had healed, his tone full of schadenfreude, looking as if he was waiting for a good show.
In the past, Yi Jiao would have surely responded in such a situation, but this time, she did not. The previous day, she had first been dealt with by Yang Haoran, then immediately afterwards, she had been thoroughly 'dealt with' by Xue Jie, insulted and tormented all night long. Having been so severely punished, she simply had no mind to respond to Xue Jie's words, nor did she dare. She remained the same as before, head bowed and silent.
Her not responding at that moment, however, made Xue Jie feel somewhat uncomfortable, as if something was missing.
"Are you mute? " Xue Jie's gaze fell upon Yi Jiao, displeasure showing on his face, as he asked in a deep voice.
"I. . . I'm not. " Yi Jiao's expression flickered with panic as she quickly replied.
"Since you're not mute, why aren't you speaking? " Xue Jie pressed.
"I. . . I dare not," Yi Jiao responded.
"Hmph, look at your lack of courage. Of course, it's best you don't speak when Yang Haoran is around, lest you two start another conflict. I could stand by you and kill him, but if I truly couldn't control myself and did kill him, then things would get troublesome. I'm just here to carry out a mission; I don't want to cause any extra complications. But now that he's gone, you can say whatever you want. " Xue Jie said.
"I don't know what to say, and there's nothing I want to say," Yi Jiao said weakly, afraid that raising her voice would anger Xue Jie.
Although she had been careful, she still managed to anger Xue Jie, because he was not satisfied with her answer.
