Chapter 908: Searching the Ghost Building

He couldn't think of a good solution, so Wu Junior ultimately decided to enter the Ghost Building.

On one hand, he had already decided to change himself, and indeed, he had been making changes recently. He didn't want to choose evasion because of the difficulties he currently faced; if he ran away now, all the changes he had made previously would be for naught.

If he evaded once, there would surely be a second time. After a few more instances, his courage wouldn't just fail to grow, it would shrink even further than before, making it incredibly difficult for him to overcome this hurdle in the future.

Furthermore, he no longer wanted others to look down on him, nor did he want to be constantly scolded and disdained by his father. He wished to gain strength through his own efforts, to become powerful, and prove that he wasn't a good-for-nothing.

"Screw it all, it's just a ghost, what's the big deal? I'm going in right now to take you on!"

Wu Junior bolstered his courage with curses, then gritted his teeth and stepped towards the entrance of the Ghost Building.

Although he used this method to steel himself, the fear in his heart didn't dissipate. Due to his overwhelming dread, his advancing feet involuntarily trembled slightly.

As he drew closer and closer to the Ghost Building's entrance, the fear in his heart intensified. Yet, he ultimately didn't stop, gritting his teeth as he stepped inside the dilapidated building.

Upon entering the Ghost Building, he immediately felt a chill. The interior was not only dim but also eerily cool, forming a stark contrast to the bright sunshine and scorching heat outside.

"The inside is better," he muttered. "The sun outside really makes me uncomfortable, it's almost burning away all the Yin Qi on my body. I still prefer this kind of ghostly environment."

Wu Junior genuinely disliked being exposed to the sun, but he disliked the Ghost Building, with its resident Evil Spirit, even more. Yet, he uttered these words to pump himself up, to bolster his courage. However, as he spoke, his voice trembled, making it clear to anyone listening that he was, in fact, terrified.

"I am a Night Watcher of the Underworld Office. I'm here to take you to reincarnation. There's no need to hide, come out and follow me. If you stay here, you'll only have two outcomes: either you'll be Soul Transformed by other capable individuals, or you'll be devoured and absorbed by even more powerful Evil Spirits. On the other hand, if you leave with me, you can still reincarnate and start anew as a human."

Wu Junior naturally didn't know if this entity truly qualified for reincarnation, but to minimize unnecessary conflict, he decided to phrase his words more appealingly.

After his words fell, there was no response from inside the room. The Evil Spirit lurking there didn't appear. After waiting for a minute, still no reaction, Wu Junior spoke again.

"This young master's time is limited. Hurry up, don't waste my time. There are many more Spirits waiting for me to guide them."

Wu Junior's voice echoed through the Ghost Building, but still, no one responded to him.

"Fine, since you're unwilling to show yourself voluntarily, I'll just have to drag you out!"

Wu Junior raised his voice a few octaves. He had only dared to step into this Ghost Building by steeling his courage; if he didn't deal with the situation before his bravery ran out, he feared the thought of evasion would resurface in his mind.

"The best way to eliminate fear is to confront it directly! Damn it! Let this young master see where this ghostly thing is hiding!"

Wu Junior thought inwardly, then a sharp roar burst from his lips!

"Ghost Eye! Open! ! !"

The loud shout boosted Wu Junior's momentum and simultaneously gave him a surge of courage. As his Ghost Eye opened, his pupils instantly turned as black as ink, and the world he saw underwent a subtle transformation.

Inside this room, he saw faint, wisps of Yin Qi. This Yin Qi wasn't emanating from him; rather, it was left behind by the Evil Spirit of this place. His gaze shifted, searching the room for the Evil Spirit's traces.

It was currently high noon, a time when Yang Qi was strong and Yin Qi weak. Unless an Evil Spirit was powerful enough, they typically wouldn't show themselves at this hour, to avoid their Soul Body being harmed by direct sunlight. Thus, they would seek out a place heavy with Yin Qi to hide and conceal themselves until nightfall.

After activating his Ghost Eye, Wu Junior didn't immediately discover the Evil Spirit, which made him both relieved and a little disappointed.

He felt relieved because he hadn't seen a terrifying sight the moment his Ghost Eye opened, which gave his already timid self a certain degree of buffer.

His disappointment, naturally, stemmed from not finding the Evil Spirit, which meant he would have to spend more time searching here—a drawn-out torment.

Though his heart was conflicted, these were indeed his most genuine emotions at that moment.

Any discarded item here could potentially serve as a vessel for an Evil Spirit to hide. Due to his insufficient strength and weak sensitivity, Wu Junior could only search meticulously.

Dust-laden tables, chairs covered in spiderwebs, a broken kettle on the floor—all these items fell within his scope of inspection. His Ghost Eye swept over them, but he found nothing.

His gaze then settled on a corner where a pile of discarded clothes lay. Here, he sensed a slightly denser concentration of Yin Qi. He didn't know if his target was hidden within this pile of old clothes, but the possibility wasn't negligible.

He had originally intended to walk straight over and inspect these clothes thoroughly, but he hesitated. He worried that if some ghostly thing suddenly popped out while he was examining them, it might just scare him witless.

His idea was simple: directly strike these clothes with Spirit Power. If an Evil Spirit was hidden inside, it would surely reveal itself.

After some thought, he abandoned this idea. This time, he had steeled himself to confront fear directly; choosing such a method wouldn't achieve the optimal effect of facing his dread.

"Sooner or later, I'll have to go through this step. If I don't overcome this hurdle in one go, the fear in my heart will never dissipate. After all, I'm already half an Underworld Official now; it would be too shameful if I kept being this scared."

Thinking this, Wu Junior gritted his teeth firmly, then took steps towards the pile of discarded clothes. Simultaneously, he secretly circulated the Spirit Power within his body, ready to launch an effective counterattack at the first sign of an emergency.

Reaching the clothes, Wu Junior didn't touch them with his hands. Instead, he controlled the Spirit Power within his body, enveloping the garments, then carefully sensed them, confirming whether his target was truly hidden within.

"Strange, could my judgment be wrong?"

After a few breaths, a perplexed expression appeared on Wu Junior's face. He hadn't sensed the presence of any Evil Spirit within the discarded clothes.

He furrowed his brows, then slowly crouched down, picking up the clothes one by one to examine and sense them. Suddenly, he seemed to have found something. A mix of trepidation and surprise welled up in his heart, and then he snatched something from beneath a worn-out garment.

It was a black-and-white portrait of a man. The frame of the portrait was damaged, and its surface was covered in dust. What was truly unnerving, however, was that the portrait had no face; the entire face had been deliberately gouged out, leaving it hollow and unsettling.

He deduced it was a man based on the hairstyle and the clothes depicted.

After clearly seeing what was in his hand, Wu Junior's body trembled with fright. A look of panic immediately appeared on his face, he cursed loudly, and then instinctively threw the portrait away.

Still shaken, he couldn't help but feel a bit embarrassed. However, at that very moment, he suddenly sensed something and whipped his head around to look behind him.

A disfigured face was inches away. Most of this face was sunken in, its features twisted together, and both eyeballs had been violently forced out. A copious amount of fresh blood continuously streamed from the distorted face, making it utterly terrifying to behold.

The instant he turned his head and saw such an utterly terrifying face, Wu Junior, who was already timid, was instantly scared rigid. When he finally reacted, a loud shriek tore from his throat, and he recoiled as if struck by lightning, scrambling backward on hands and knees.

Terrified, he had completely forgotten that an Evil Spirit of this level could only scare people, and he had entirely forgotten the Spirit Power he had secretly circulated within his body.

At that moment, he had only one thought: to get as far away from this ghostly thing as possible!
