Chapter 877 Gu Yi
Inside the private room, Yang Haoran leaned back in his chair, a cigarette dangling from his lips, deep in thought, a pensive look on his face.
The door was not closed, so he constantly saw ghosts hurrying past the doorway. Of course, occasionally he also saw ghosts wearing Skins walk past the doorway, though the latter were far fewer than the former.
Most of the ghosts who couldn't afford Skins were newcomers to the Underworld; some, though not new, were doing so poorly in the Underworld that they still couldn't afford a Skin.
As for why ghosts with Skins would appear here, it was highly probable that they had lost their previous jobs and thus had to come to the Underworld Talent Market to look for new work.
As the Underworld Talent Market was overly bustling, it was inevitably quite noisy, but Yang Haoran, leaning back in his chair, seemed not to hear the clamor, smoking his cigarette nonchalantly and pondering his thoughts.
Before he had even finished one cigarette, the first applicant arrived outside the door. This person did not directly enter the room but stood outside the doorway; without Yang Haoran's permission, she dared not rush in.
Soon after this person appeared, a crowd of ghosts immediately gathered behind her. Though many ghosts suddenly appeared, they were not rowdy and chaotic, but obediently lined up, waiting for the interviews to begin.
Since these ghosts were not qualified to immediately reincarnate, but were left in the Underworld to toil like oxen and horses, it indicated that they were probably not good people in their former lives.
Furthermore, now they couldn't even afford Skins, and their strength was pitiably weak. Even if they wanted to be arrogant, they lacked the capital to do so.
And most importantly, those who had just arrived in the Underworld had all suffered some torment. The more arrogant they were, the more torment they received, euphemistically termed a "welcome purification ritual," but in reality, it was a violent reminder to make them understand their situation, their status in the Underworld, and how they should behave from now on.
With such experiences, it was difficult for these ghosts to not be obedient.
Of course, not all ghosts became obedient because of this. There were still some unruly individuals, but such types were few, and none lived long. Anyway, among the ghosts currently applying to Yang Haoran, none of these reckless individuals had yet been found.
The ghost who first arrived outside the doorway had originally intended to greet Yang Haoran to leave a good impression on him, but seeing Yang Haoran deep in thought, she chose to keep her mouth shut, not making a single sound, standing silently, awaiting Yang Haoran's summons.
As for the ghosts behind her, though they were all obediently queuing, many among them were still whispering to each other, inquiring and guessing about Yang Haoran's shop.
Because Yang Haoran's recruitment notice was overly concise, after the relevant unit announced it, though these ghosts knew there were vacancies, they didn't know what exactly Yang Haoran's shop did, so it was inevitable that they were curious.
Yang Haoran snapped out of his contemplation, looking at the crooked, long queue outside the doorway, with even more ghosts continuously joining the line.
He knew that the relevant unit must have already publicized his recruitment information, otherwise, so many ghosts wouldn't have come to apply in such a short time.
He couldn't help but sigh at the powerful influence of the relevant unit. Initially, there was no one, but in such a short time, they had attracted so many applicants for him, and the number was still increasing. It truly surprised him.
Of course, achieving such an effect was also because there were simply too many ghosts looking for work. If not for that, so many ghosts wouldn't have gathered outside his door.
It wasn't just outside his door; other shops or businesses recruiting staff also had their doorways teeming with people and long queues.
Yang Haoran's gaze fell upon the first applicant. This person was a young woman who looked about twenty years old, and was small and adorable.
Seeing Yang Haoran look at her, the woman remained expressionless, but a hint of unease she couldn't hide flickered deep in her eyes. She was still somewhat flustered inside; her unchanging expression was merely a pretense of composure.
This scene naturally did not escape Yang Haoran's eyes, but Yang Haoran did not intentionally scare her because of it. After all, he was here to recruit staff today, not to interrogate criminals.
“Please come in. ”
Yang Haoran said to the woman with a smile, without a trace of arrogance, appearing very polite.
The woman clearly hadn't expected Yang Haoran to be so polite to her. In her impression, whether they were Ghost Officials from the Underworld or Underworld Officials from the mortal realm, they were all extremely fierce and always carried themselves with an air of superiority. She had never seen an Underworld Official be so courteous when dealing with a ghost.
After a slight daze, the woman reacted. She quickly bowed respectfully to Yang Haoran, then stepped into the room.
As she entered the doorway, the door behind her automatically closed, leaving only her and Yang Haoran in the entire room.
“There are no extra chairs here, so I'm afraid you'll have to stand. ”
Yang Haoran said with a smile. He wasn't intentionally making things difficult for the woman; it was truly just one table and one chair in the room. He was already seated in the only chair. He couldn't very well stand himself and then give the chair to this woman, could he?
That wasn't realistic. Of course, having the woman sit on the table was equally unrealistic.
The woman was now a ghost, so sitting or standing wouldn't tire her. Yang Haoran's intention in inviting her to sit was simply to show her basic respect. But since there were no extra chairs here, she could only stand or float.
“Underworld Official, you are too kind. It is right for me to stand, and I am not inconvenienced at all,” the woman quickly replied.
Yang Haoran nodded with a smile, after taking a deep drag from his cigarette.
“What is your name? ” Yang Haoran asked.
“Replying to your esteemed self, my name is Gu Yi,” the woman immediately responded, her attitude respectful.
“Gu Yi, hehe, a good name. I currently have two positions available here: one is a manager, and one is a clerk. Which one do you wish to apply for? ” Yang Haoran continued to ask.
“I wish to apply for both! ” Gu Yi replied, her tone firm and decisive, without a hint of jest.
Yang Haoran was somewhat surprised. He hadn't expected Gu Yi to respond to him in such a manner.
“You wish to apply for both, hehe. Do you know what my shop does? ” Yang Haoran wasn't angry and asked Gu Yi with a smile.
Gu Yi shook her head, indicating that she didn't know what exactly Yang Haoran's shop did.
“Hehe, since you don't know, how can you be sure you can handle both positions, and simultaneously at that? ” Yang Haoran asked with a smile.
“Because I believe in my learning ability. No matter what your esteemed shop does, as long as you give me some time, I can absolutely satisfy you! ” Gu Yi said, her tone brimming with self-confidence.
Yang Haoran could tell that Gu Yi's confidence wasn't feigned, but originated from within. There were only two possibilities for such a situation: one, that Gu Yi was blindly overconfident, overestimating her own abilities.
The other possibility was that she genuinely possessed talent, which was why she had developed such strong self-confidence.
Whether Gu Yi belonged to the former or the latter category, it was naturally difficult to determine based solely on her word. However, Yang Haoran had a way to ascertain the truth of Gu Yi's words.
After his verification, if Gu Yi belonged to the former category, then he wouldn't suffer any loss. At worst, he would let Gu Yi leave and then call the next applicant into the room.
But if Gu Yi belonged to the latter category, then he would have a good start today. Even if Gu Yi couldn't handle the manager position at that time, it would still be good to have her as his clerk.
“Hehe, words alone prove nothing. I still want to see for myself. You don't mind, do you? ” Yang Haoran asked Gu Yi with a smile.
“How does your esteemed self wish to see? ” A hint of doubt appeared on Gu Yi's face, she asked.
“Hehe, it's very simple. ”
As Yang Haoran spoke with a smile, he opened his Ghost Eye. Instantly, his eyes turned inky black, like bottomless black pools.
If it were when Gu Yi was alive, suddenly seeing such a pair of eerie eyes, she might have been startled. But now, she appeared very calm. Because she herself was a ghost, she naturally wouldn't be frightened by something eerie.
