Chapter 829: Wu Lao's Horcrux (Medium)

In the Spirit Master's eyes, Old Master Wu and his two sons were like frail children, while he himself was a burly adult, an armed one at that. Naturally, he didn't take them seriously. The reason he spoke these words to Old Master Wu in this situation, instead of directly attacking the trio, was purely for revenge, to psychologically torment them. After all, Old Master Wu was the second-in-command of the Lecheng Underworld Division, and many Spirit Mediums and Spirit Temples had fallen into his hands. Thus, this Spirit Master had long harbored hatred and murderous intent towards him, but had never found a suitable opportunity to strike.

Now that Old Master Wu had been successfully ensnared by the Spirit Master, how could the Spirit Master possibly forgo this chance to torment him? Simply killing Old Master Wu, he felt, would be letting him off too lightly. He intended to first shatter Old Master Wu's psychological defenses, making him succumb to terror, and only then would he decide to execute him.

Seeing Old Master Wu's silence, the Spirit Master glanced at the trembling Wu Junior, then continued with a smiling tone. "I can tell you seem to care a great deal about these two sons of yours. I just wonder which of the two brothers you love more."

His words paused slightly, and a malicious grin spread across the Spirit Master's face. "Today, you are certainly going to die; no one can change that. However, I'm not the type to wipe out every last person. So, I can offer you a choice: I promise to let one of these two brothers go, but the other must leave their life behind. Choose."

The Spirit Master's words caused the faces of Old Master Wu and his two sons to contort. Wu Senior's brows furrowed, and he remained silent. Wu Junior, meanwhile, turned his gaze to Old Master Wu, words catching in his throat, though his eyes bore a silent plea.

Old Master Wu, however, did not make an immediate choice. He didn't even spare a glance for Wu Senior or Wu Junior. His eyes were fixed intently on the Spirit Master before him, his face a mask of icy coldness. "Your intentions with this tactic are truly malicious," Old Master Wu stated in a low, heavy voice. The Spirit Master, in response, merely burst into hearty laughter.

"Haha, Old Master Wu, have you gone senile? All three of you were meant to die here today. I'm giving you a chance, allowing one of your two sons to live, and I'm just asking you to make a simple choice. Instead of thanking me, you actually blame me? Is there any justice left in this world?"

The Spirit Master sneered inwardly. He was merely toying with Old Master Wu, for he had no intention of letting anyone go; regardless of Old Master Wu's choice, all three of them would die today. Furthermore, he had already decided: the son Old Master Wu chose to save would actually be the first to die. The moment Old Master Wu made his choice, he would immediately kill the one chosen to live. This, he knew, would undoubtedly inflict an even greater blow to Old Master Wu's heart. By then, with the chosen one dead and the abandoned one temporarily alive, the expressions on the faces of the father and sons would surely be priceless, and they might even turn against each other. That was precisely the scene he yearned to witness.

"What, can't bear to make a choice? " Seeing Old Master Wu remain silent, the Spirit Master asked with a smile.

Old Master Wu remained silent, his face so grim it looked as if it might weep, his body trembling slightly. It was evident just what kind of torment he was enduring in that moment.

"Heh heh, the palm and the back of the hand are both flesh, indeed it's hard to choose. But my time is limited, I can't keep dawdling with you. I'll count to three. If you still can't make a choice, then both brothers will just die here. " As his words fell, the Spirit Master, a cold smirk playing on his lips, prepared to count. But before he could utter the first number, someone spoke up before him.

"If what you say is true, I hope you'll let my younger brother live. " It was Wu Senior who spoke. Although he knew deep down that the other party was most likely toying with them, father and sons, he had no choice but to play along. Even if there was only a sliver of hope, he decided to bequeath that hope to his younger brother.

Upon hearing this, Wu Junior's expression visibly relaxed, as if a drowning man had clutched a lifeline, allowing him to see hope for survival once more. But as the realization dawned on him, his expression grew complicated, for he had just understood that his hope of living was bought with his older brother's life.

"Heh heh, my apologies, but you don't have the right to choose. This choice only counts if Old Master Wu makes it himself. " The Spirit Master said with a cold laugh. His words extinguished the faint hope that had just flickered in Wu Junior's heart, and simultaneously, made Wu Senior's face fall.

"Senior, he's clearly toying with us. Such a clumsy performance, I don't believe you wouldn't see right through it. " Old Master Wu looked at Wu Senior, speaking in a low, heavy voice, then shifted his gaze back to the Spirit Master opposite him.

"You don't need to count. I won't make a choice. Never mind that I don't believe a word of your nonsense; even if what you said were true, I would absolutely not choose. Both of them are my sons, equally important to me. I will absolutely not abandon one to save the other."

Old Master Wu's words caused the smile on the Spirit Master's face to gradually vanish. "Hmph, you ungrateful old fool! I offered you a chance, and you refused it. Don't blame me for being impolite now. I see this fellow seems quite frightened, so I'll start with him."

As the Spirit Master finished speaking, his gaze shifted from Old Master Wu to the terror-stricken face of Wu Junior. The moment his words fell, a massive amount of Yin Qi emanated from the Spirit Master. This Yin Qi converged behind him, transforming into an Evil Spirit with blood-red eyes and a ghastly, tragic visage.

Judging from the power fluctuations emanating from this Evil Spirit, it seemed to have only recently broken through to that realm. But even so, its strength was more than enough to completely overpower Old Master Wu and his two sons. Among the trio, only Old Master Wu was the strongest, yet even he was no match for this Evil Spirit, much less Wu Senior and Wu Junior. Currently, Old Master Wu was only a step away from opening his Heaven Soul, but he hadn't yet achieved that breakthrough. Battling the Evil Spirit alone offered almost no chance of victory, for even if it had only recently ascended, it remained beyond his ability to contend with.

As the Evil Spirit coalesced, chilling ghostly laughter echoed from its mouth. Its gaze, fixed on Old Master Wu and his two sons, even revealed a hint of greed. It was no wonder it displayed such an expression; the Spirit Power within Old Master Wu and his two sons was a ghost's greatest delicacy. Completely devouring their Spirit Power would undoubtedly boost its own strength to a certain degree. That was why, when it looked at Old Master Wu and his two sons, its blood-red eyes shone with such voracious hunger.

"To deal with trash like you, I can't even be bothered to lift a finger. Go, devour all three of them. " As the Spirit Master issued his command to his Guardian Spirit, Old Master Wu quickly retrieved two thumb-sized Porcelain Bottles and handed one to Wu Senior and the other to Wu Junior.

"Drink the medicine liquid in the Porcelain Bottles, then open your Ghost Eyes and hide at the edge of the barrier! " Old Master Wu didn't explain what kind of medicine liquid was in the Porcelain Bottles, for in the current situation, he simply didn't have time to elaborate.

As for why they needed to open their Ghost Eyes, Old Master Wu didn't explain this either, but the two Wu brothers roughly understood their father's intention: only by activating their Ghost Eyes would they be less likely to fall into illusions set by spiritual entities. However, the Spirit Master's Guardian Spirit was an Evil Spirit-level entity, and Wu Senior and Wu Junior's strength was quite ordinary. If the opponent was determined to cast illusions on the brothers, even with their Ghost Eyes open, it would be difficult for them to break free from the illusion. Of course, one thing could not be denied: activating their Ghost Eyes was definitely better than not activating them.

As for why he wanted the two brothers to retreat to the edge of the barrier, it was naturally out of concern that the ensuing battle would inadvertently affect them. Beyond that, if Old Master Wu had an opportunity to break through the barrier, the two brothers could also escape the barrier at the very first instant!
