Chapter 805: The Weak Are Meant To Be Bullied
Communication Talismans have a certain degree of limitation when transmitting messages; they cannot be used like phones where you talk for as long as you wish. Therefore, when using a Communication Talisman, it's usually best to keep it brief.
At this moment, Vice-Captain Zhou didn't explain the full details of the situation in the Communication Talisman, and this was one of the reasons. It wasn't that he didn't want to explain clearly, but that it couldn't be done in just a few words.
Normally, the Spirit Police communicate using their internal, specially made walkie-talkies. However, considering unforeseen circumstances, Captain Luo had previously exchanged other items at the Talisman Order for a batch of Communication Talismans, to be used in special situations.
The Administrative Courtyard was preparing to act against Bai Xue. This was no small matter for the Spirit Police. As the vice-captain of the Spirit Police, Vice-Captain Zhou certainly couldn't discuss this over a walkie-talkie, as that would be a blatant tipping off. The Administrative Courtyard would immediately know about it, and he, as the Spirit Police vice-captain, would not come out of it well. That's why he used a Communication Talisman to warn Bai Xue to be careful and to temporarily avoid returning to Spirit Police headquarters.
At this moment, Yang Haoran was lost in thought. What he was pondering was naturally not when the Spirit Police prepared the Communication Talismans, but why the Administrative Courtyard wanted to take action against Bai Xue.
It was true that Bai Xue was a demon; this was no secret. The Administrative Courtyard not only knew about it but had also agreed to Bai Xue joining the Spirit Police. In recent years, Bai Xue had performed many meritorious deeds, contributing significantly to the Spirit Police, the Administrative Courtyard, and indeed, to all of Lecheng.
Yet now, the Administrative Courtyard actually wanted to take action against Bai Xue.
One must remember that the Lecheng Administrative Courtyard was severely short-handed at the moment, especially lacking powerful experts, who were precisely what the Administrative Courtyard urgently needed. To bolster its strength, the Administrative Courtyard had even long ago issued a decree, sincerely inviting talents from all walks of life to join them. As long as they possessed strength and were willing to serve the Administrative Courtyard, no matter their identity or past misdeeds, the Administrative Courtyard would overlook them.
Given such a situation, why would the Administrative Courtyard act against Bai Xue? Among the entire Spirit Police force, Bai Xue was currently the strongest. If the Administrative Courtyard eliminated Bai Xue, it would be an act of cutting off their own arm.
"I originally thought that as long as I contributed enough to them, they would surely accept me. Now it seems I was overthinking things. Their prejudice against me won't lessen, no matter how much I do. Humans are humans, and demons are demons. Humans always make that distinction very clear."
Bai Xue spoke with a smile, though her smile at this moment held less of her usual charm and more coldness and mockery.
Bai Xue didn't fly into a rage, nor did her emotions appear overly agitated, but Yang Haoran could sense the anger and disappointment in Bai Xue's heart.
"You can't say that. In my opinion, at least the Spirit Police I've encountered currently have no prejudice against you; on the contrary, they hold you in great respect. As for why the Administrative Courtyard made this decision, I estimate it's likely driven by profit, or perhaps they were under an irresistible threat, which led them to decide to abandon you."
At Yang Haoran's reminder, Bai Xue seemed to recall something.
"Brother Underworld Official, are you saying this matter is likely related to those two Demon Hunters?"
Yang Haoran took a drag from his cigarette, then nodded.
"I do think so. You've been doing perfectly fine in the Spirit Police, and the Administrative Courtyard has never brought up your identity, let alone acted against you. Now these two Demon Hunters have just arrived in Lecheng; first, the Administrative Courtyard orders the Spirit Police to assist the couple in searching for their son's whereabouts, and then they decide to take action against you. It's hard for me to believe this matter is unrelated to that couple."
Bai Xue frowned, pondering Yang Haoran's words. After a slight pause, Yang Haoran continued his analysis.
"That couple must have already learned of their son's demise. Their so-called search for his whereabouts is actually an attempt to investigate the cause of his death. Although you work for the Lecheng authorities, your true form is that of a demon—this is no secret. And the couple's son was a Demon Hunter. Demons and Demon Hunters have always been like fire and water, so in their eyes, their son's death is very likely connected to you. Thus, they pressured the Administrative Courtyard, or perhaps used some benefit to coerce them, which led the Administrative Courtyard to decide to act against a meritorious official like you."
While this was merely Yang Haoran's analysis and speculation, it wasn't without reason. After thinking it over, Bai Xue believed that the truth might indeed be as Yang Haoran had analyzed.
"Heh heh, who cares? Anyway, I've long wanted to leave the Spirit Police. If it weren't for you, Brother Underworld Official, I wouldn't have wanted to be their enforcer."
Bai Xue first let out a cold chuckle, then spoke. Though her words sounded nonchalant, it wasn't hard to discern the resentment in her tone.
"Heh heh, Brother Underworld Official, now that the Spirit Police have chased me out, you wouldn't kick me out too, would you?"
As she said this to Yang Haoran, Bai Xue shed her cold smile, resuming her alluring one.
"Since you still have the mood to joke, I'm much more at ease. Don't worry about the Spirit Police for now. Just stay home for a bit. After Old Master Wu brings back the detailed information, we'll make further plans."
Yang Haoran said with a smile, then extinguished his cigarette.
Seeing that Yang Haoran didn't fall for her teasing, Bai Xue looked bored and gave up trying to probe him further. After hearing Yang Haoran's words, she thought of another important question and asked:
"What if I don't show myself, and that couple comes straight here?"
Yang Haoran chuckled, his expression calm.
"Heh heh, when soldiers come, we'll block them; when water comes, we'll dam it. First, we bluff. If we can bluff them, we bluff them. If we can't, then we fight. What else can we do?"
Yang Haoran's answer made Bai Xue laugh aloud, and her mood consequently improved quite a bit.
"I've experienced your skill at bluffing people. I won't speak for others, but at least I, even now, haven't fully recovered from your bluffs."
Yang Haoran wore a wry smile. He disagreed with Bai Xue's statement.
"I do like to bluff others, but I definitely didn't bluff you. I'm not taking the blame for that."
Vice-Captain Zhou was very efficient. Less than half a day after sending the Communication Talisman to Bai Xue, he found a way to contact Old Master Wu and conveyed the detailed situation to him.
The reason he had Old Master Wu relay the message, rather than directly arranging to meet Bai Xue, was certainly due to his own difficulties.
Now that Captain Luo was severely injured and unconscious, all matters, big and small, concerning the Spirit Police required his handling. He represented the Spirit Police force. The Administrative Courtyard wanted to act against Bai Xue, and as the second-in-command of the Spirit Police, if he met Bai Xue at this time, it would be fine if he wasn't exposed. But if he was, the consequences would be unimaginable.
He didn't contact Yang Haoran because Yang Haoran wasn't someone he could simply reach. He had no idea where Yang Haoran was; even if they had just met, he wouldn't know where Yang Haoran would go next.
If he went to Yang Haoran's villa, it would be like burying one's head in the sand. It would be better to just go directly to the villa to find Bai Xue and explain things in person, rather than having someone else relay the message.
So, after much deliberation, he decided to find a way to contact Old Master Wu and have Old Master Wu deliver the message.
Old Master Wu had always handled various affairs at the Death God Temple and occasionally appeared in the city, which Vice-Captain Zhou knew. Therefore, contacting Old Master Wu was relatively much simpler.
However, his method also carried risks; the possibility of exposure still existed, but it was better than directly contacting Bai Xue.
After Old Master Wu learned the details of the situation from Vice-Captain Zhou, he knew the situation was urgent. So, without any delay, he immediately put aside his current tasks and rushed back to the villa, where he met Yang Haoran and Bai Xue.
The matter was indeed as Yang Haoran had speculated: the Administrative Courtyard's decision to act against Bai Xue was indeed related to those two Demon Hunters.
But these two Demon Hunters hadn't offered the Administrative Courtyard any benefits; instead, they directly threatened the Administrative Courtyard, demanding Bai Xue be handed over. The reason was simple: they were Demon Hunters, and their duty was to eliminate all demons in this world. The Administrative Courtyard hiring a snake demon as an enforcer conflicted with their duties, and they would not allow such a thing to happen, so they forcibly demanded the Administrative Courtyard surrender Bai Xue.
The Administrative Courtyard was equally furious about this, but they were utterly powerless, as their strength, in the eyes of the two Demon Hunters, was simply too weak. If they refused, their Administrative Courtyard would likely cease to exist.
