Chapter 496: My Little Darling

The sudden loud bang immediately drew everyone’s attention. The Spirit Police present hadn't yet grasped what was happening, but Ma Ling’s expression was the first to change.

"The barrier I set up here has been attacked!"

Above Huangniu Town, a restrictive barrier was now clearly visible. Because it had suffered an attack, the restrictive barrier was revealed.

No sooner had the restrictive barrier appeared than another loud bang echoed. The barrier was struck heavily once more, but this time, the restrictive barrier could no longer withstand such powerful destructive force. It shattered with a crash, dissolving into specks of spiritual light that vanished completely.

The reason Ma Ling set up this restrictive barrier after arriving in Huangniu Town was simply to prevent ordinary people from entering. Therefore, the barrier's capacity to withstand attacks was quite limited, completely unable to endure powerful assaults.

It was precisely for this reason that after just two attacks, the barrier shattered.

The instant the barrier shattered, two figures slowly emerged from the distant ruins. Due to the firelight and smoke, their faces couldn't be clearly seen, and only a tall and a short figure could be vaguely made out.

Two powerful energy fluctuations emanated from these tall and short individuals. In addition to the strong energy fluctuations, both of them also emitted an intense Corpse Qi.

As the two walked out of the firelight and smoke, their figures became clear in the eyes of Yang Haoran and the others. Upon seeing their appearance, Ma Ling and the rest showed considerable changes in their expressions, and even Yang Haoran's brows furrowed slightly.

The short man exuded a strong Corpse Qi, the source of which was partly the power within him, and partly because he had long dealt with zombies, so his body was tainted with a large amount of Corpse Qi.

Although the short man emanated strong Corpse Qi, Yang Haoran was certain he was a human, not a zombie.

However, the tall man behind the short one was different. This tall man's entire body was festering, with maggots even squirming in some places. His clothes were tattered and torn, with visible bloodstains and unknown liquids flowing, clinging wetly to his body, utterly repulsive.

Moreover, a foul stench emanated from the tall man. Even from a distance, one could smell this nauseating odor. This kind of stench could not be emitted by a normal person; even if soaked in a cesspit for ten days to half a month, one would never emit such an overpowering smell, because this was a unique odor produced only when a human corpse decayed.

It was obvious that this tall man was not human at all, but a zombie. Judging by the power fluctuations emanating from his body, he was a Corpse Ghoul, a powerful Corpse Ghoul!

“My apologies, my little darling is just too naughty. He accidentally slipped away and caused you all some bother. I’ll take him away from here now. ”

It was the short man who spoke. Calling him 'shorty' wasn't because he was actually that short, but rather, compared to the burly Corpse Ghoul behind him, his height seemed somewhat diminished. Compared to a normal person, he wasn't short at all.

However, at that moment, no one present was in the mood to care about his height. Instead, their attention was fixed on his face and the words he was speaking.

As he spoke, the short man glanced at the Corpse Ghoul bound by chains not far away, his meaning clear.

"This Corpse Ghoul, you raised it? " a Spirit Police officer asked in a deep voice, his expression grim.

It was no wonder he wore such an expression. The appearance of this Corpse Ghoul in Huangniu Town had not only cost many villagers their lives but had also caused heavy casualties among their Spirit Police force. Therefore, he harbored immense hatred for this Corpse Ghoul.

Previously, he had thought this Corpse Ghoul had merely become what it was due to being accidentally buried in a corpse-raising ground after death. He had never imagined that this Corpse Ghoul had a master, that it was a pet raised by someone, or rather, a hired thug.

Not only did the Spirit Police officer who spoke look grim, but the expressions of everyone else present were equally unpleasant. Even Yang Haoran, who was always smiling, now had his brows slightly furrowed, and the smile had vanished from his face.

Yang Haoran felt a certain aversion towards these corpse-raisers or corpse-refiners who cultivated zombies, because if not for such people, his clansmen, including his parents, would not have died so tragically, nor would they have suffered Soul Transformation.

“This Corpse Ghoul is indeed raised by me. I’m truly sorry for causing you a little trouble,” the short man responded with a smile, without denying it.

Although the short man was apologizing verbally, his words and actions showed not the slightest hint of remorse. Rather than apologizing, he was provoking them.

Moreover, such a major incident had occurred; how many innocent villagers had died tragically because of this Corpse Ghoul? Could it be resolved with a mere apology?

“A ‘little trouble’? Huangniu Town has been utterly destroyed by your Corpse Ghoul! Do you know how many people he gnawed on here? Do you know how many people died because of him? And you actually call this ‘a little trouble’! ”

It was Ma Ling who spoke. The other party’s words and attitude made her extremely uncomfortable, so she retorted directly, without even thinking.

“Heh heh, just a few deaths, nothing for you to make a fuss about. Corpse Ghouls are actually just like wild beasts; eating human flesh and blood is completely normal for them. To be precise, they’re even worse than beasts. After all, some beasts can still think, but Corpse Ghouls only act on instinct. When they’re hungry, they naturally want to drink blood and eat meat. This is merely an instinctive reaction. You should broaden your horizons, don’t be so narrow-minded, and be a bit more tolerant. Aren’t lunatics who kill also exempt from the law? ” the short man said with a faint smile.

“You—you’re twisting words! ” Ma Ling was furious at the short man’s words. Her face showed an angry expression, and the longsword in her hand transformed into a golden streak of light, shooting towards the short man.

Ma Ling was quite direct; if argument failed, she went straight to action, having no intention of continuing to waste words with the other party.

The Golden Magic Sword was incredibly fast, reaching the short man in a blink. The short man showed no reaction, not even the slightest change in his facial expression, but the Corpse Ghoul behind him moved at that moment.

With a single movement, the Corpse Ghoul vanished from its spot, reappearing directly in front of the short man.

*Clang! *

With a crisp clang, Ma Ling’s Golden Magic Sword was blocked by one of the Corpse Ghoul’s palms. The sword tip made contact with the palm, but the sharp tip surprisingly failed to pierce the Corpse Ghoul’s defense. Instead, it produced a crisp clang, as if striking metal, and sparks flew.

Ma Ling’s expression stiffened. She hadn’t expected the Corpse Ghoul’s body to be so incredibly tough, to the point that even her Golden Magic Sword couldn’t harm it in the slightest.

After the Golden Magic Sword was blocked, the Corpse Ghoul’s palm, like a cattail-leaf fan, gripped it, directly seizing the Golden Magic Sword in its hand.

However, as the Corpse Ghoul’s hand clamped down on the Golden Magic Sword, Ma Ling, seeing this, quickly formed hand seals and chanted softly.

The golden light emanating from the Golden Magic Sword held by the Corpse Ghoul suddenly intensified. The Corpse Ghoul’s gripping hand abruptly emitted a puff of white smoke, as if an ordinary person’s hand had gripped a red-hot branding iron.

An ordinary person encountering such a situation would subconsciously drop what was in their hand, but this Corpse Ghoul did not. It still held the Golden Magic Sword tightly in its hand, and not the slightest expression of pain could be seen on its rotting face.

The short man slowly stepped out from behind the Corpse Ghoul’s burly body. He glanced at the Golden Magic Sword held in the Corpse Ghoul’s hand, and also noticed the Corpse Ghoul’s palm smoking from the Golden Magic Sword’s heat. He gave a faint smile, withdrew his gaze, and looked at Ma Ling.

“Your ability isn’t much, but your magical artifact is quite good. To actually be able to injure my Corpse Ghoul’s hide is truly impressive. ”

These words from the short man greatly insulted and provoked Ma Ling. Her face was filled with fury, and she fully activated her Golden Magic Sword, wanting to break free from the Corpse Ghoul’s grip. However, the Golden Magic Sword merely vibrated violently in the Corpse Ghoul’s hand and did not successfully escape.

The short man coldly smiled, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes, and said, “Beauty, don’t waste your effort. I’ll take this magical artifact. My little darling has been hurt so badly by you, so let’s just use this magical artifact as medical fees. ”

As his words fell, the short man made a grasping motion in the air towards the Corpse Ghoul not far away. A large gray hand materialized above the Corpse Ghoul, then reached down to grab the Corpse Ghoul below. It looked like he was preparing to take the Corpse Ghoul away.

However, just as this gray hand was about to seize the Corpse Ghoul, a black chain, as thick as an arm, appeared out of thin air, fiercely lashing out at the hand formed from Corpse Qi.
