Chapter 41: Ladykiller, Women's Friend
Yang Haoran hadn't contacted Guan Hai for some time either. He had been swamped first with Jiang Zhenzhen's affairs, and then with his own, leaving him utterly preoccupied with no time to reach out to Guan Hai. And Guan Hai, that fellow, hadn't contacted him either during this period.
Looking at the caller ID, Yang Haoran felt a little strange.
Guan Hai calling him late at night was no surprise at all; Guan Hai often did so. What *did* strike him as odd was why Guan Hai hadn't contacted him for quite some time.
Since they had met, the two had never gone so long without contact. Yang Haoran hadn't contacted Guan Hai because he was bogged down with important matters; could Guan Hai's silence also be due to him handling something significant?
With a heart full of questions, Yang Haoran answered the call.
“Hey, you punk, where have you been lately—? ”
As soon as the call connected, Yang Haoran immediately began to lay into Guan Hai. That was how they always were, exchanging barbs back and forth. If either of them caught an opening, they would show no mercy, and if the other was in the wrong, they would usually allow themselves to be chastised as a means of venting.
This time, Yang Haoran naturally felt he had ample reason, so he didn't care if Guan Hai had excuses or not; he'd chew him out first, just to satisfy his craving for a verbal sparring match. After all, neither of them ever took such exchanges to heart.
However, before he could finish speaking, he was cut off. From the voice, he could tell the other party was filled with urgency, which forced him to close his mouth.
The voice on the other end wasn't Guan Hai's. It was a woman's, very pleasant to hear, yet laced with extreme anxiety.
Though he couldn't see her, Yang Haoran was quite familiar with that sweet voice. It belonged to Xiao Mo, the manager of Guan Hai's bar. Given Yang Haoran's close friendship with Guan Hai, they often drank together at the bar, and over time, he had naturally become acquainted with the manager.
“Xiao Mo, is that you? What happened to Guan Hai? ” Yang Haoran quickly asked.
At this moment, he had no mind to lecture Guan Hai. Besides, even if he did, Guan Hai wouldn't hear him—Xiao Mo had made it very clear that Guan Hai had already fainted.
“I can't explain it all over the phone right now, Brother Yang. Do you have time to come to the hospital? ” the anxious voice came again from the other end.
“I'll be right there. Which hospital is it? ” Yang Haoran quickly asked.
Xiao Mo quickly told Yang Haoran the name of the hospital they were headed to. Without the slightest hesitation, Yang Haoran hung up the phone and was about to rush out of the convenience store with his yellow Ghost-Hunting Bag. However, before leaving, he paused for a moment and also placed his Soul-Gathering Bead inside the bag.
Outside the convenience store, Yang Haoran waited for a taxi. Though anxious, there was nothing he could do; such was the sorrow of not owning a private car.
After quite some time, he finally managed to hail a taxi. After telling the driver which hospital to go to, the driver floored the accelerator, and the taxi sped towards its destination under the moonlight.
Rushing to the hospital this late at night, anyone could tell it was an emergency. Who else would go to a hospital at such an hour? The driver understood, so without Yang Haoran needing to urge him, he kindly picked up the pace, while still driving safely.
The ambulance had already arrived at the hospital. Yang Haoran called Guan Hai's phone, and Xiao Mo naturally answered. After learning their exact location, he immediately rushed over in a flurry.
Upon seeing Xiao Mo, Yang Haoran also saw Guan Hai, still unconscious. Guan Hai's face was pale, and a doctor was examining him. Yang Haoran wanted to ask Xiao Mo what exactly had happened, but with various troublesome procedures to handle, he had no choice but to temporarily put his questions aside.
Xiao Mo was in charge of looking after Guan Hai, while Yang Haoran was responsible for handling all the necessary paperwork. Thankfully, he had brought his wallet this time, otherwise, it was hard to say how things would have turned out.
It had to be said, business at the hospital was booming. Even past midnight, while not exactly overflowing with people, one could still see scattered patient families rushing frantically this way and that.
After an hour of frantic activity, Yang Haoran finally completed all the procedures. By then, Guan Hai had already been moved into a ward.
It was fortunate it was late at night. If it had been daytime, Yang Haoran would have been dreaming to think he could finish all those procedures in an hour.
Returning to Guan Hai's ward, the sight inside made Yang Haoran jump.
The ward was packed with people, all of them women, and all of them beautiful women. The two other patients in the ward stared with wide eyes; one young man's gaze had even completely frozen.
Yang Haoran stood at the ward entrance, startled by the scene before him. He hadn't even stepped inside yet, but a medley of various perfumes wafted out to greet him. So many fragrances mixed together created a truly bizarre sensation.
Yang Haoran initially thought he might have entered the wrong ward, but then, spotting a few familiar faces among the crowd of women, he confirmed he hadn't made a mistake.
These familiar faces belonged either to Guan Hai's former girlfriends or to his so-called "female confidantes. " Their sudden appearance here, especially at this hour, could only mean one thing: they were all here for the unconscious Guan Hai.
“Excuse me, please, excuse me,” Yang Haoran said, pushing his way into the ward, gently parting the beauties in front of him with his hands.
Someone trying to force their way in immediately displeased the women in the back. They were already pushed to the rear and quite annoyed, and now someone wanted to squeeze past them again. Of course, they were unhappy; some even flared up and cursed, venting their frustration.
“What are you shoving for, you stinky man? Don't you dare take advantage of me! ”
“Oh, don't push me! Who is that? So annoying! ”
“If anyone else shoves, don't blame me for being impolite! ”
Among these women, some were arrogant, some timid, and some short-tempered. Although their personalities varied, they were all directing their anger at Yang Haoran, who was trying to push through.
Yang Haoran paid no attention to the women's scolding. Under their furious, fiery gazes, he quickly squeezed his way through.
“Brother Yang, you're here. ”
“Brother Yang, what exactly happened to Brother Guan Hai? ”
Among the women closest to the bed, some looked disdainful when they saw Yang Haoran squeeze in; they knew him, but seemed to look down on him. However, two beautiful women did greet Yang Haoran, their attitudes more polite.
Yang Haoran, naturally, couldn't be bothered with those who disdained him. To the two who called him "Brother Yang," he shook his head with a serious expression, indicating he was also unsure of the situation for now.
Xiao Mo had been pushed to a corner of the bed by the women. Faced with so many, she couldn't cope alone. Seeing Yang Haoran appear, a pleading look immediately appeared on her face.
Yang Haoran saw it. He nodded gently to Xiao Mo, then swept his gaze across the beauties present. Well, what a sight—at least a dozen of them.
To think it was almost two in the morning, and these women were actually here! It couldn't help but make him sigh with admiration for Guan Hai's undeniable way with women.
“Everyone, it's almost two o'clock now. You should all head back and rest. Gathering here like this will affect the other patients,” Yang Haoran said with a smile, addressing the anxious beauties before him.
“Who are you? What right do you have to tell us to leave? ! ”
“Exactly! What right do you have to tell us to leave? Besides, who would we be disturbing by staying here? ! ”
“Hmph, it's his honor to be disturbed by me! Not everyone is so lucky. If it weren't for Brother Guan Hai's accident, who would want to come to this place? ! ”
The women chirped and chattered, some quite agitated, seemingly extremely displeased with Yang Haoran's suggestion.
“Brother, don't mind my feelings! These young ladies aren't noisy at all. Their voices are lovely; in fact, they help me sleep. ”
From the neighboring bed, a young man quickly spoke to Yang Haoran, as if afraid Yang Haoran would chase these beauties away. Yang Haoran noticed that when this man looked at the women present, his eyes gleamed, as if a dog had spotted feces, eager to pounce and devour them ravenously.
“Indeed, young man, don't you worry. Not only do these ladies' voices help us sleep, but the scent on them is also very pleasant. I think this fragrance might even help with my condition. ”
Lying on another bed was an old man in his sixties. His face was sallow, and his voice was weak and breathless. Though it was unclear what illness he suffered from, one glance was enough to tell he was gravely ill and not long for this world. Yet, as he leaned back against the bed, gazing at the beautiful women in the ward, his face was alight with excitement, spouting nonsense, his eyes burning like two small suns.
Given the old man's reaction, if his 'hardware' wasn't failing him, Yang Haoran wouldn't doubt for a second that he would transform into a prehistoric beast right then and there, charging into this den of beauties before him.
The reactions of these two patients caused the smile on Yang Haoran's face to stiffen. Meanwhile, the women present grew even more agitated, chattering and squabbling endlessly.
“They don't have a problem, so why are you sticking your neck out here? Move aside quickly; I want to see what happened to Brother Guan Hai! ”
“No, let me do it. When Brother Guan Hai hears my voice, he's sure to wake up, because my voice is filled with the power of love! ”
“Go to hell! You little hussy, get as far away as possible! Stop trying to corrupt my Brother Guan Hai. If he messes around with too many 'fox spirits,' he'll turn into a beast himself! I don't want my Brother Guan Hai reeking of promiscuity everywhere he goes! ”
“You dead hag, who are you calling names? ! ”
The scene instantly spiraled out of control. Yang Haoran watched, sighing inwardly. He truly couldn't fathom what these women thought about all day. Whether they watched too many TV dramas or something else, he felt they were simply abnormal, or perhaps a little brain-dead.
“If you want him to die, then keep bickering here. ”
A smile still lingered on Yang Haoran's face, but his voice, as it reached everyone's ears, sent a chilling coldness through them.
This inexplicable chill seemed to come from the very depths of their souls.
