Chapter 390: Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation

Under the guidance of the doctor, Yang Haoran and Luo Dui visited all the injured, not just the Night Watchers, but also the Spirit Police.

Among these injured individuals, some were conscious, while others remained in a coma. The former had lighter injuries, while the latter's were more severe, with some even still in critical condition.

However, no matter how dire their condition, it was still better than that of their comrades currently resting in the morgue.

Inside the morgue, a total of six bodies were laid out: four Spirit Police officers and two Night Watchers, meaning the number of Spirit Police was double that of the Night Watchers.

It wasn't that the Spirit Police were incapable; rather, the Night Watchers were more specialized in dealing with ghostly entities, and Spirit Power inherently had a strong suppressive effect on spirits themselves. This was why the Night Watchers' death toll was half that of the Spirit Police.

If they had been battling not ghosts, but rather zombies or demons, then the Night Watchers' casualties would likely have been double that of the Spirit Police.

The six had met tragic ends; their bodies had been so gnawed by the Ghost Infants that they were barely recognizable as human, and two of them were even reduced to mere torsos.

Witnessing this scene, both Yang Haoran and Luo Dui felt a profound weight in their hearts, especially Luo Dui, whose face was etched with pain.

In Lecheng, both the Spirit Police and the Night Watchers were few in number.

The scarcity of Night Watchers was simply because Yang Haoran didn't wish to maintain too large a force.

The Spirit Police, however, were different; increasing their numbers was no easy feat. Losing four Spirit Police officers in one go was a significant blow, both to Luo Dui's morale and to the overall strength of the Spirit Police squad.

Seeing his comrades, with whom he had faced life and death, now separated by the veil of mortality—some not even leaving behind a complete body—how could he possibly feel at ease?

Suddenly, however, Luo Dui seemed to recall something, and his gaze shifted to Yang Haoran beside him.

“Emissary Yang,” Luo Dui began, “you are an Emissary of Death of the Underworld Office. I know you must have a way to bring them back to life, right? ”

Observing Luo Dui's hopeful expression, Yang Haoran's face twisted into a wry smile.

“I do have a way,” Yang Haoran admitted, “but doing so would violate the rules of the Underworld Office. Normally, if I actually did something like that, my troubles would be immense if the higher-ups decided to investigate. ”

Pausing here, Yang Haoran's gaze fell upon the six incomplete corpses before he continued, “Furthermore, their physical bodies have suffered devastating damage. What good would it do to revive them in such a mutilated state? Do you think they could accept living on with such incomplete bodies? Their physical forms are utterly ruined; even if they were brought back, they would likely struggle with basic self-care in the future. What meaning would there be in bringing them back to life? ”

As his words faded, Yang Haoran sighed and lowered his head. Then, with a gentle wave of his hand towards the two Night Watcher corpses, two Death God Seals floated out from their bodies and merged into his own.

As these two Death God Seals integrated into his body, Yang Haoran's power fluctuations noticeably intensified.

These two Death God Seals were ones he had implanted in the two Night Watchers. As long as they hadn't successfully opened their Heaven Souls, the Death God Seals within them would still belong to him, and he could reclaim them whenever he wished.

Once reclaimed, his own power would increase accordingly. The stronger the reclaimed Death God Seal, the more Spirit Power he would gain.

To put it plainly, the Emissary of Death merely lent power to the Night Watchers. Before a Night Watcher successfully opens their Heaven Soul, no matter how much their strength increases, that power does not truly belong to them. Once the Emissary of Death reclaims the Death God Seal, all that power is completely transferred back to the Emissary of Death.

Of course, if the Emissary of Death chooses not to reclaim the Death God Seal, that's a different matter entirely.

As long as a Night Watcher lived, Yang Haoran naturally wouldn't proactively reclaim the Death God Seal within them, as that would be truly despicable. However, after a Night Watcher's death, he would certainly reclaim the Death God Seal, ensuring its power wouldn't simply dissipate.

Yang Haoran's actions at this moment were entirely normal for an Emissary of Death; every Emissary of Death would do the same. This fundamentally differed from Deng Feng's methods in the past.

In the past, Deng Feng had used secret arts to enhance the power of his Death God Seals by consuming the souls and vital energy of Night Watchers, profiting through such cruel means. Yang Haoran, on the other hand, was merely reclaiming the Death God Seals from deceased individuals. These two acts were fundamentally different.

Seeing Yang Haoran reclaim the Death God Seals from the two Night Watchers, Luo Dui, who stood beside him, felt no surprise. He didn't even show a hint of astonishment, for, according to his understanding, this was an entirely normal procedure.

Compared to Yang Haoran reclaiming the Death God Seals, what he cared about more was the matter of reviving the deceased Spirit Police officers.

He had listened carefully to Yang Haoran's recent words and also felt that Yang Haoran had a point. The six bodies were so severely damaged; what good would it do to revive them? The deceased themselves probably wouldn't wish to continue living in such mutilated physical forms.

Though he understood this principle in his heart, Luo Dui still wasn't ready to give up.

“Is there really no other way? ” Luo Dui asked.

Yang Haoran pondered for a moment, then replied, “Of course, there are other methods. For instance, Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation. ”

“Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation? ” Luo Dui's brow furrowed slightly.

“I believe you've heard of Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation in movies or through other avenues. You're right, it's exactly as you're thinking: using someone else's corpse to achieve the goal of reviving the target. That is Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation,” Yang Haoran explained.

Hearing this, Luo Dui's expression brightened, and he quickly asked, “What conditions does Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation require? Is just having a corpse enough? ”

Yang Haoran shook his head, refuting Luo Dui's assumption, then replied, “You're thinking too simply. Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation has very high requirements for the corpse; not just any corpse will do. ”

“What requirements? Tell me, and I'll prepare them. ” Seeing that Yang Haoran hadn't explained clearly, Luo Dui looked somewhat anxious and pressed on with his questions.

“To perform Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation, a fresh corpse is the first choice. And by 'fresh corpse,' I mean the body of someone who has just died. Ideally, it's best if the person hasn't even died yet, and their soul is forcibly extracted from their body—that's the freshest kind of corpse. ”

Upon hearing this, the smile vanished from Luo Dui's face, and his expression grew serious.

Yang Haoran glanced at Luo Dui beside him, noting the change in his expression. He gave a faint smile and then asked, “If you want to revive them through the method of Borrowing a Corpse for Reanimation, you must have such a fresh corpse. Do you have one available? ”

Luo Dui shook his head and said, “No. ”

“Indeed, such fresh corpses aren't easy to come by. While waiting at a hospital might yield some fresh bodies, acquiring them would be troublesome. The best method would be to kill someone right now, but even I find that practice cruel. Could you bring yourself to do it? ” Yang Haoran asked with a smile.

Luo Dui clenched his fists, his face showing signs of internal struggle. A moment later, he gently shook his head.

Slaughtering living people like livestock—that was far too cruel. Although he desperately wanted to revive his deceased comrades, he found it difficult to accept using such barbaric methods to harm innocent people for that purpose.

“Are there any other methods? ” Luo Dui asked.

Yang Haoran didn't immediately answer Luo Dui's question. He dropped the smile from his face, hesitated for a moment, and then spoke.

“There are other methods, yes, but they wouldn't involve reviving them. Instead, it would allow them to continue living in a different way. It's just that. . . ”

Hearing that Yang Haoran still had a way, a flicker of hope rekindled in Luo Dui's heart.

“Just what? ” Luo Dui quickly pressed.

“It's just that from now on, these four won't be able to serve as Spirit Police anymore, nor can they continue to follow you. From then on, they would only be able to follow me,” Yang Haoran stated.

These words immediately caused Luo Dui's brow to furrow slightly.

“Luo Dui, please don't misunderstand,” Yang Haoran quickly explained, “I have no interest in poaching your people. I don't even know what their abilities are, so there's no question of 'poaching. ' The reason I say this is because only by following me will they be able to legitimately continue residing in the mortal world. I believe you understand what I mean by that. ”
