Chapter 355: Joining the Spirit Police
Yang Haoran took a drag from his cigarette, then slowly said: "I suggest you join the Spirit Police."
"Ah! " Hearing Yang Haoran's words, the snake demon's face immediately fell into a bitter expression.
Yang Haoran saw the snake demon's reaction. He smiled and continued: "First, let me finish. Listen carefully, think it over thoroughly, and then give me your answer."
The snake demon nodded with a wry smile, not speaking, but quietly waiting for Yang Haoran to continue.
"Although I am Lecheng Underworld Office's Emissary of Death, I don't possess the power to wield absolute control. This time, I shielded you from the Talisman Order. The matter seems resolved, but who can say for certain they won't try to undermine me behind my back? For example, finding ways to report or complain about me—it's all possible. If I were to fall, do you think they would let you off?"
"Furthermore, you are, after all, a demon. And it's not just the Talisman Order who wishes to eliminate demons; there are also the Demon Hunters you've encountered before, and Exorcists with all sorts of divine abilities, and so on. I shielded you from the Demon Hunters, and again from the Talisman Order. If one day I were to shield you from Exorcists, it wouldn't be strange at all."
"In this world, true righteous individuals exist, but they are few. More often, people raise the banner of righteousness for their own benefit. Whether it's the former or the latter, in their eyes, if you're a demon, you deserve to die. They will all come looking for trouble, under the guise of demon-extermination. And how many times can I shield you?"
The snake demon's smile faded, and a rare expression of seriousness appeared on her face. However, she still didn't speak, instead continuing to wait for Yang Haoran to elaborate.
"However, if you join the Spirit Police and become a member of their ranks, these problems, while perhaps not all resolved, will certainly be reduced by more than half."
In truth, there was something Yang Haoran hadn't said. His act of shielding the snake demon from the Talisman Order this time could be either a major or minor issue. If the Talisman Order didn't cause trouble behind the scenes, then all would be well. But if the Talisman Order decided to play dirty behind his back and find a way to lodge a complaint, then his superiors would certainly come looking for answers.
However, if the snake demon were to join the Spirit Police, the situation would change entirely. Even if his superiors came to question him, he would have one more reason to justify himself.
Seeing the snake demon still pondering, Yang Haoran continued: "Of course, not joining the Spirit Police is also an option, but you'll lose a protective umbrella in the future. Even if you don't appear in the human world, you won't necessarily be safe. There will still be people searching the world for demons for various reasons, such as Demon Hunters."
"As I just said, I'm merely offering a suggestion. The choice is yours. Whatever decision you make, I will not interfere."
After saying this, Yang Haoran remained silent. Instead, he drank his tea, waiting for the snake demon's reply.
The snake demon didn't deliberate for long; in less time than it takes to smoke a cigarette, she spoke.
"I trust that Brother Emissary won't harm me, so I accept your suggestion. Furthermore, I truly need more resources to improve myself; with my own strength alone, some resources are very difficult for me to acquire," the snake demon said.
"Hehe, I'm very pleased you're willing to accept my suggestion," Yang Haoran chuckled and said.
"After I join the Spirit Police, can I continue to stay here? I feel safer staying with you," the snake demon said, a charming smile once again gracing her face.
Yang Haoran nodded without a moment's thought, saying: "No problem. You can stay as long as you like."
After speaking, an object suddenly appeared in Yang Haoran's hand. It was, surprisingly, a Death God Pendant.
The Death God Pendant in his hand floated suspended in the air, enveloped by Yin Qi. It then drifted towards the snake demon, finally stopping before her.
"Brother Emissary, what are you preparing to do? " the snake demon asked, her face full of bewilderment.
"Didn't I just say? You are now a believer of the Death God, so you'd best hang this pendant around your neck," Yang Haoran said with a smile.
The snake demon gave a charming smile and replied: "Hehe, but I'm not a Death God believer."
"Whether you're a Death God believer or not, who knows? However, once you wear it, you will be a genuine Death God believer."
Yang Haoran's words seemed contradictory, but in reality, they carried a hidden meaning. The snake demon didn't seem to grasp the meaning behind Yang Haoran's words, but Old Master Wu, who had remained silent nearby, understood Yang Haoran perfectly.
Whether one is a Death God believer or not, only oneself truly knows. After wearing the Death God Pendant, in the eyes of outsiders, that's precisely what you are: a genuine Death God believer. But whether you truly are a Death God believer, only you know. How could outsiders possibly know?
The reason Yang Haoran had the snake demon wear the Death God Pendant was, in fact, to secure another escape route for himself. Just in case his superiors truly came to question him about the snake demon someday, he would have one more reason to clear his name.
Though the snake demon didn't quite understand Yang Haoran's intention, she still dutifully placed the Death God Pendant around her neck.
"Does this count as a gift from you? " the snake demon asked, a teasing smile on her face.
Yang Haoran chuckled, then asked: "I have many more gifts like this. Do you want them?"
"No, I think this one is enough," the snake demon replied with a charming smile.
Yang Haoran smiled, offering no reply, but instead took out his phone and dialed Luo Dui's number.
"Luo Dui, Bai Xue has agreed to join your Spirit Police," Yang Haoran said directly as soon as the call connected, without beating around the bush.
Luo Dui's excited voice immediately came through from the other end of the line.
"Really? That's simply wonderful! This, this. . . can she come over now? I'll send someone to pick her up right away! " Luo Dui stammered incoherently.
"No need, I'll have someone bring her over now," Yang Haoran said with a smile.
"Then I'm truly grateful to you. Oh, right, we absolutely must get together tonight. I'll have Zhou Fudui reserve a place right away."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Haoran looked at Old Master Wu and said: "Old Master Wu, call a brother in here to take Bai Xue to Spirit Police headquarters."
Old Master Wu nodded respectfully, then left his seat and pulled out his phone to make a call.
"Brother Emissary, so urgent? Go now? " the snake demon said, smiling at Yang Haoran.
"Since Luo Dui wants you to go now, he must have his reasons. Just go, and if you have any problems, you can contact me anytime," Yang Haoran said with a smile.
"Then what should I pay attention to? " the snake demon asked.
"Agree to serve the Spirit Police in the future, but during your service, they cannot restrict your personal freedom. Furthermore, they absolutely cannot plant any secret arts or curse seals within your body. As for your remuneration, you can discuss it with Luo Dui yourself."
At this point, Yang Haoran thought for a moment and added: "There's also one more thing to remember: you must tell Luo Dui that you'll do this job if you want to, and you can leave whenever you don't. You mustn't be tied down."
The snake demon nodded in understanding. Just then, a Night Watcher entered the living room.
The Night Watcher took off her hat, revealing a cute face.
"Boss, Old Master Wu," the woman said, a smile on her face, greeting Yang Haoran.
Yang Haoran was already familiar with this woman. Whether it was when she stopped the Spirit Police for Xiujuan, or more recently when she brought him and Bai Xue out of the mountains, she had left a deep impression on him.
"Be serious. Don't always be giggling and laughing all day," Old Master Wu admonished.
The smile vanished from the woman's face, as if she were changing masks, and she instantly became serious.
Yang Haoran looked at the woman, then at Old Master Wu, and smiled meaningfully. He felt that Old Master Wu and this woman must have some kind of relationship; otherwise, this woman probably wouldn't still be in his sight.
"If I'm not mistaken, your name is Liao Xiaoyu, right? " Yang Haoran asked with a smile, looking at the young girl before him who appeared to be around twenty years old.
"Yes, my name is Liao Xiaoyu! I can't believe Boss actually knows my name!"
Liao Xiaoyu was very happy and surprised. As she replied to Yang Haoran, a smile involuntarily reappeared on her face.
However, no sooner had the smile appeared on her face than she realized something was amiss, and her smile vanished again.
"You don't need to be surprised. I remember the name of every Night Watcher. Can you drive? " Yang Haoran asked with a smile.
"Yes, I can! I'm an old hand at driving; I can drive any car! " Liao Xiaoyu replied respectfully.
"Alright then, I'll give you a phone number. You take this older sister to her destination, and then bring her back. Any problems? " Yang Haoran asked again.
"No problem! " Liao Xiaoyu answered loudly, her voice full of vigor.
"Good, then I'll leave this matter to you. " After speaking, Yang Haoran looked at the snake demon again and reminded her: "Seal away all the Demon Qi and power fluctuations on your body."
"Don't worry, Brother Emissary, I won't cause you any trouble," the snake demon said with a charming smile, but still, in accordance with Yang Haoran's instructions, sealed away all her Demon Qi and power fluctuations.
"It doesn't hurt to be more cautious. I'll wait for your return here."
