Chapter 338: Escorting Back to the City
Old Master Wu had never disappointed Yang Haoran in his work, and this time, in Yang Haoran's view, was certainly no exception.
After hanging up the phone, Yang Haoran lay in the weeds. He took a puff from his cigarette, flicked away a small insect crawling on his cheek, and gazed at the crescent moon in the sky, exhaling smoke from his mouth and nostrils as a thoughtful expression settled on his face.
Aside from his initial encounter in the Ghost Building, tonight marked the most severe injuries he had ever sustained, an experience sure to leave a profound impression.
The injuries were already inflicted, and even if they pained him, he had to endure, for it was an unchangeable fact.
However, his suffering could not be in vain; it had to hold value. At the very least, he needed to glean some useful experience and lessons from it.
At this moment, Yang Haoran’s pensive expression signaled he was doing precisely that. He replayed the evening's battle scenes over and over in his mind: his fight with the Evil Spirit, and his fight with the Demon Hunter, all appearing one by one in his thoughts.
Through these combat images, he reflected on his mistakes and simultaneously absorbed the strengths of his opponents, using them to refine and improve himself.
Cigarettes were lit one after another, and the scenes in his mind replayed repeatedly. He didn't know how much time had passed until he sensed several streams of Yin Qi rapidly approaching his location, pulling him back from the mental playback of the battle.
He knew the people he was waiting for were about to appear.
Their appearance, aside from lacking a scythe for reaping wheat, was not much different from the Death God in movies.
The figures each removed their large black hoods, then looked at the blood-soaked Yang Haoran, and finally at the bucket-thick white snake lying lifeless nearby. Their expressions were filled with shock
"Boss!"
With expressions of shock, the figures spoke in unison, bowing respectfully to Yang Haoran.
These individuals were all Night Watchers under Yang Haoran, led naturally by Old Master Wu, the second-in-command of the Lecheng Underworld Office.
Among the people Old Master Wu brought, there were both men and women, all of whom Yang Haoran knew. One woman, in particular, left a deep impression on Yang Haoran; when he was dealing with the supernatural incident involving Xiao Kang and his mother, this woman had been with Old Master Wu and nearly clashed with the Spirit Police.
"Excellent, you arrived quickly."
Yang Haoran said with a smile, a look of satisfaction on his face, choosing to ignore the shock displayed on their faces.
In truth, Yang Haoran had no idea whether Old Master Wu and the others had arrived quickly or not, because his mind had been entirely preoccupied with replaying tonight's battle scenes, learning, reflecting, and refining. He hadn't noticed the passage of time at all, so how could he possibly know the speed of Old Master Wu's arrival?
Of course, knowing was one thing; as a leader, whether to speak, and how to speak, was another matter entirely.
As he spoke, Yang Haoran pulled himself up from the ground. Seeing this, Old Master Wu immediately stepped forward, intending to help him.
"It's fine, I'm much better now. Moving around shouldn't be a problem," Yang Haoran said to Old Master Wu with a smile.
Old Master Wu hesitated for a moment, then nodded and released his hand. Though his heart was filled with questions, he did not voice them in front of the other Night Watchers.
It wasn't just Old Master Wu who felt perplexed; the other Night Watchers present were also filled with bewilderment.
In their eyes, Yang Haoran was a mysterious and powerful figure, but his current appearance was indescribably wretched.
His pale, sickly complexion, tattered and blood-stained suit, and mud-caked, worn-out and split leather shoes made for such a miserable sight that they simply couldn't believe their eyes, unable to accept that what they saw was real.
Adding to that was the enormous snake demon nearby, its body covered in grotesque wounds, some areas even stripped of snake scales. Its wretched state surpassed even their boss's, which only deepened their confusion and shock.
They were all very curious what exactly had happened.
"Boss, what exactly happened? Who dared to injure you so severely? Was it this white snake? " a woman asked, unable to suppress her inner confusion.
This woman was none other than the female Night Watcher who had previously stopped the Spirit Police from taking Xiujuan away in the slums.
The moment she spoke, Old Master Wu's brows immediately furrowed, and he cast a displeased glance at her. The other Night Watchers also looked at her, their gazes somewhat surprised.
Seeing everyone's eyes turn to her, the woman realized she had asked an inappropriate question and quickly covered her mouth with her hand.
"I'm sorry, Boss, I didn't mean to—"
The woman quickly apologized, but before she could finish speaking, Old Master Wu shot her a stern glare, making her swallow the rest of her words.
"Boss, this child is just like this—she never learns, but I can guarantee her absolute loyalty to you, with no hidden intentions," Old Master Wu quickly explained.
Yang Haoran, however, waved his hand with a smile and said, "It's nothing. I just faced two rather formidable opponents tonight, so I sustained some injuries, but I'm not dying. You don't need to worry about me."
Yang Haoran didn't dwell on the woman's words, because he had specifically instructed Old Master Wu to bring trustworthy individuals. Since Old Master Wu had brought her, it meant she was reliable in his eyes, perhaps just a little too outspoken.
Yang Haoran naturally wasn't petty when it came to his own people, so he didn't take the matter to heart at all.
As his words fell, Yang Haoran looked at Old Master Wu beside him and asked, "Old Wu, where's the large truck I asked for?"
"It's waiting down the mountain; a large truck can't come up here," Old Master Wu replied.
Hearing this, Yang Haoran nodded, then said, "Get her onto the truck. Be careful not to hurt her. If she's jostled any more, she might die."
As Yang Haoran gave the order, the figures, under Old Master Wu's direction, each released the Spirit Power within their bodies, wrapping it around the snake demon Bai Xue's form. They carefully lifted her and hurried towards the truck's location.
In truth, a single Night Watcher would have been enough to handle this, but for safety, Yang Haoran still requested Old Master Wu to bring a few more people. This was to ensure the snake demon wasn't harmed during transport and also to provide him with a degree of protection.
Meanwhile, Yang Haoran, accompanied by Old Master Wu, walked towards the truck.
Once the other Night Watchers had walked some distance away, Old Master Wu asked with a worried expression, "Boss, are you really alright?"
"Do I look alright, given my pathetic state? " Yang Haoran asked with a laugh.
"I'll immediately arrange for some doctors to wait at home to treat your wounds," Old Master Wu said, pulling out his phone.
"No need. Spirit Power will automatically heal them; you should know that. Although the injuries are severe, a period of rest will suffice," Yang Haoran replied with a smile.
Old Master Wu hesitated, then finally put away his phone, knowing that Yang Haoran was not wrong.
When people get sick, they need medicine and doctors, but that applies to ordinary people. For an Underworld Official like Yang Haoran, the way injuries are handled is naturally different from how ordinary people deal with them.
Old Master Wu did not inquire about what Yang Haoran had truly encountered tonight; as for Yang Haoran's earlier lighthearted explanation, it was clearly just a perfunctory remark.
In Old Master Wu's view, it was better not to ask for too many details about such matters. Knowing that it happened was enough; prying would do him no good.
The Night Watchers carefully got the snake demon onto the truck. For safety, several of them stayed on the truck to protect the snake demon, and they also covered the truck with a large black sheet. Yang Haoran and Old Wu, meanwhile, got into another vehicle.
Back in Lecheng, the snake demon was taken to the room she had previously occupied. Although the room was not small, the snake demon's body was truly massive, making the room seem somewhat cramped.
However, Yang Haoran didn't concern himself with this. Once the snake demon awakened, she should be able to transform into human form, and then the room wouldn't feel crowded anymore.
After dealing with the snake demon's situation, the other Night Watchers, having successfully completed their mission, departed. Yang Haoran, meanwhile, led Old Master Wu to his study.
