Chapter 312: Do You Know Her?
Time passed bit by bit, and soon it was midnight.
Wu Mei tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep for a long time.
As soon as she closed her eyes, she would get the illusion that her blanket was soaking wet, accompanied by that chilling gaze from the bedside. Moreover, with something heavy on her mind, she couldn't sleep as soundly or deeply as her co-workers.
It never rains but it pours; at this very moment, she felt the urge to defecate, leaving her utterly conflicted. She wanted to go to the bathroom, but she was also a little afraid. Yet, if she didn't go, she wouldn't be able to hold it much longer. If it were just to urinate, that would be fine; at worst, she'd use a few sanitary napkins. But the problem was, she needed to defecate, and that was trouble.
After holding it in for a few minutes, Wu Mei truly couldn't anymore. Left with no choice, she could only throw back her blanket, get out of bed, and prepare to go to the bathroom. Her body passed through the little girl's spirit body by the bed. The little girl showed no reaction, but Wu Mei couldn't help but shiver.
“So cold. . . ”
Wu Mei wrapped herself in a thick coat, then deliberately made some noise, using this method to wake her co-workers. She did this because, in her mind, if any co-workers woke up in the dormitory, it would give her a greater sense of security. Furthermore, the woken co-workers might also want to go to the bathroom. If that were the case, it would be even better; with someone accompanying her to the restroom, she would have nothing to fear at all.
The result left her somewhat disappointed. The noise she made did wake some co-workers, but none of them seemed to have any intention of getting up to use the bathroom. Some of the woken co-workers grumbled, some looked at Wu Mei with confusion, then all of them groggily flopped back onto their beds and fell asleep again.
Wu Mei had originally wanted to find a co-worker with whom she had a good relationship to accompany her, but she really couldn't hold it anymore. Even finding a co-worker would be too late, and besides, they might not even go, and if they did, they would tease her for the rest of her life.
The instant she plunged into the restroom, Wu Mei felt a chill creep up her back. However, in her current state, she had no time to worry about it, and hastily rushed inside.
In less than a minute, Wu Mei rushed out of the restroom. Because she was so scared, she didn't dare to linger, finishing her 'battle' at the fastest possible speed.
Normally, she wouldn't have come out for at least ten minutes, but this was a special situation requiring special handling. She didn't dare to prolong the 'battle' and only wanted to return to the dormitory immediately.
However, just as she rushed out of the restroom, a figure suddenly appeared before her.
“Ah! ”
Wu Mei screamed in terror, falling to the ground, her face etched with extreme fright.
In the dead of such a silent night, her scream, filled with utmost terror, should have certainly startled her co-workers. Yet, this was not the case. The scream pierced the night sky, but not even a light flickered on in the dormitory.
After the initial terror, Wu Mei came to her senses. Only then did she realize that the figure suddenly before her was a person, not a legendary ghost. And she had even seen this person today at the Death God Temple.
This person was none other than Yang Haoran.
Yang Haoran looked the same as always, a smile on his face. However, this time, his smile had shed some of its benevolence, gaining a touch of coldness instead.
“Y-y-you. . . why are you here? ! ”
The terror in Wu Mei's heart hadn't completely dissipated. She stared at Yang Haoran in shock, stuttering as she spoke.
“My apologies for suddenly appearing here and frightening you,” Yang Haoran said with a smile.
“You damn psycho! Are you trying to scare people to death in the middle of the night? ! ”
Wu Mei cursed while scrambling to her feet, then glared at Yang Haoran with a face full of rage.
“What are you doing here? Are you here to steal something? You've got some nerve! I already noticed you weren't a good person during the day, so I didn't want to get involved with you. I never thought you'd actually track me down here! ”
As her words fell, Wu Mei bellowed towards the dormitory.
“Help! Someone, quick! Someone’s stealing! ”
The entire construction site was silent. Apart from Wu Mei's shouts, there was no other sound.
“You don’t need to shout,” Yang Haoran said with a smile. “I’ve set up a forbidden barrier here. Even if you screamed until your throat ripped, your co-workers wouldn’t hear you. ”
“Forbidden barrier? ” Wu Mei froze, then roared at Yang Haoran, “What nonsense are you spewing? What damn forbidden barrier? ! ”
Of course, Wu Mei didn’t believe Yang Haoran’s words. She continued to shout towards the dormitory, but the lights in the dorm remained off.
The dormitory wasn't far from the restroom; normally, standing at the restroom entrance and speaking normally, one could be heard at the dorm entrance. But now, it was uncanny. In the dead of such a quiet night, even her shouts couldn't rouse her co-workers, making it hard for her to believe any of this was real.
She didn't know why Yang Haoran was here, nor how he knew this place, but she did know that Yang Haoran seemed to harbor ill intentions towards her. That much she could confirm.
After a few more shouts, her co-workers still didn't respond. Wu Mei's heart was filled with both fright and fear.
She wasted no more words and took off running.
If her co-workers wouldn't wake up, then she'd rush into the dormitory and drag them off their beds one by one!
However, just a few steps after she dashed out, her body seemed to hit an invisible wall, sending her crashing hard onto the ground once more.
“Wh-what in the world is going on? ! ”
Wu Mei couldn't believe any of this was real. She scrambled to her feet and, unwilling to give up, rushed towards the dormitory's location.
The result was the same: she was again thrown back by the invisible barrier, her body crashing hard onto the ground.
Wu Mei was just an ordinary person, and a woman at that. After being thrown down hard several times like this, she felt she couldn't take much more, but she still struggled to get back on her feet.
She looked at Yang Haoran, roaring with a face full of terror, “What’s happening? ! What in the world is happening? ! ”
“What’s happening? Didn’t I just explain it? ” Yang Haoran said with a smile.
“Evil sorcery! This must be evil sorcery! ” Wu Mei seemed to have realized something, her expression even more terrified than before. She continued to bellow at Yang Haoran, “I’m just an ordinary person! Why are you trying to harm me? ! Let me go! Let me go! ”
“When I saw you today at the Death God Temple, shrouded in Yin Qi, I originally intended to form a good connection and help you through this tribulation. But who would have thought I almost helped the wrong person? How unexpected. Being a good person. . . it really isn't easy, because you never know if you're helping a good person or a bad one,” Yang Haoran remarked with a cold laugh.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about! Just let me go, let me go now! ” Wu Mei roared, her face frantic.
“You don’t know what I’m talking about? ” Yang Haoran chuckled, then pointed beside Wu Mei and said, “Then, do you know her? ”
Wu Mei looked in the direction Yang Haoran was pointing, and saw that beside her, a little girl had appeared at some unknown time.
The little girl was soaking wet all over, with numerous water droplets sliding off her. Upon hitting the ground, they dissipated into Yin Qi. Her face was deathly pale and bloodless, and already swollen, with a pair of icy, hateful eyes fixed intently on Wu Mei.
A shriek of terror escaped Wu Mei’s lips, and she plopped down onto the ground in fright.
Although the little girl’s face was swollen, Wu Mei recognized her at a glance.
This was Lao Zhang’s daughter, her neighbor from the same village, a child she had watched grow up, and the very person she had been dreaming of in nightmares every night for the past few days.
Wu Mei was so terrified that her face turned white. She couldn’t utter a single word, only scream and try to flee for her life.
However, Yang Haoran had already set up a barrier here. No matter which direction she tried to run, she couldn’t escape the area enveloped by the barrier.
Yang Haoran didn’t stop Wu Mei’s actions. He lit a cigarette and watched as Wu Mei frantically, and relentlessly, tried to escape.
The little girl also made no move against Wu Mei. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to, but rather that she lacked the ability.
She was just an ordinary Wánglíng, with quite limited abilities. Her revenge against Wu Mei consisted only of scaring her in dreams; she had no other methods.
After all, she was just a child and didn't have much experience when it came to scaring people. So, even though she haunted Wu Mei all night long, she hadn't managed to scare Wu Mei to death after several days.
If a Wánglíng with experience in scaring people had come instead, Wu Mei would probably be buried by now.
Although she hadn’t scared Wu Mei to death, the little girl haunting Wu Mei every night had still caused a dense layer of Yin Qi to cling to Wu Mei’s body, making her physical condition worsen day by day.
If things continued like this, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, it wouldn't be long before Wu Mei was completely drained of life by the little girl in this manner. . .
But now, Yang Haoran’s appearance was precisely such an unforeseen circumstance.
