Chapter 300: Captain Luo's Speculation
Yang Haoran stood just outside the snake demon's room. He naturally heard her cursing clearly, every single word.
However, the snake demon's furious tirade didn't alter his expression in the slightest. He still looked as amicable as ever, his smile unchanged, natural, as if it truly came from the heart.
Yang Haoran possessed no mind-reading ability; he didn't know the snake demon's previous thoughts. He simply acted out of a pure lack of trust in the snake demon, deciding to confine her to the room before leaving to prevent her from causing any trouble or taking Xiao Kang hostage to threaten him.
Whether the snake demon would stir up trouble in his absence, or threaten him using Xiao Kang, Yang Haoran couldn't be certain, but he had to take precautions.
As it turned out, he hadn't been overthinking things, for the snake demon had indeed entertained the idea of threatening him with Xiao Kang. Whether she would have actually followed through remained unknown, as she no longer had the opportunity.
Inside, the curses continued. Yang Haoran listened placidly, neither speaking nor leaving. Only when the snake demon genuinely seemed to have exhausted herself from cursing did he finally speak with a smile.
"Your Demon Qi is very strong. I was worried someone might come looking for trouble, so I set up a seal to protect you. You need to heal anyway, isn't this perfect?"
The snake demon, who had just fallen silent, exploded again upon hearing Yang Haoran's words.
"Protect, my ass! You just don't trust me! You just want to torment me! You, you, you, you're so wicked! It's a waste of talent that you're not a demon!"
The reason his smile became so satisfied was that, judging by the snake demon's reaction, she was truly at her wit's end. This meant that after he left, she shouldn't be able to cause any trouble.
Of course, he also had confidence in the seal he had placed; it wasn't something one could break just by wanting to.
After heading downstairs, Yang Haoran first explained things to Xiao Kang, so the little guy wouldn't worry.
Afterwards, Yang Haoran called Old Master Wu, asking him to arrange for someone to keep an eye on the situation at his home. If anything unexpected happened, they were to contact him immediately.
Having taken care of these matters, Yang Haoran returned to his study. Amidst the snake demon's furious curses, he stepped into the spatial rift.
Meanwhile, at the Spirit Police headquarters, Vice-Captain Zhou saw the look of disappointment on Captain Luo's face and knew immediately that his trip had definitely been a bust.
Although Vice-Captain Zhou still harbored a degree of resistance towards demons, if the Spirit Police could gain such a powerful asset, it would indeed be a good thing. At the very least, it would allow more ordinary people to be protected in the future.
He felt a complex mix of emotions regarding this matter, deeply conflicted. Thus, seeing Captain Luo's disappointed expression, he felt a slight pleasure, yet also a faint trace of disappointment.
"Captain Luo, did things not work out? " Vice-Captain Zhou asked, coming up beside Captain Luo.
Captain Luo shook his head. Though he didn't speak, his reaction already conveyed the outcome.
"Is it Emissary Yang who's unwilling, or. . . ? " Vice-Captain Zhou asked, frowning.
"Emissary Yang didn't get involved in this matter from beginning to end, at least not that I saw. It was the snake demon who was unwilling, alas. . . " Captain Luo sighed, speaking aloud.
Hearing this, Vice-Captain Zhou's expression turned somewhat grim.
"This snake demon truly doesn't know what's good for her. We gave her a chance to atone, and she actually refused. 'Not of our kind, their hearts are bound to be different. ' A demon is a demon, after all."
Captain Luo shook his head again, then looked at Vice-Captain Zhou and said, "Don't be so impatient. Even though she refused me very decisively this time, it doesn't mean she'll be as decisive in refusing me next time. I plan to try again in a couple of days."
"Try again? " Vice-Captain Zhou looked at Captain Luo in surprise. After a moment's hesitation, he said, "I don't think there's much hope. If you tell a meat-eater to suddenly become a vegetarian, would they agree? Unless they've been traumatized or something."
"Even if the hope is small, I have to try. What if, as you said, she's been traumatized and agrees? Then the strength of our Spirit Police team would dramatically increase."
Seeing Captain Luo's stubborn persistence, Vice-Captain Zhou sighed, unsure what to say.
As Vice-Captain Zhou remained silent, Captain Luo took the initiative to ask, "Has that Black Talisman Master woken up?"
Vice-Captain Zhou shook his head, replying, "Not yet. Her injuries are severe, and she's very weak. There's no telling when she'll wake up."
"She woke up once after being brought back. I learned from her that she went mad because she was hit by the snake demon's demonic art, and the snake demon was sealed by her using a Demon Sealing Talisman in a wooden house on the mountain."
"At the time, she wanted to go back and slay the snake demon, but I forcefully stopped her. It's just. . . I don't know what happened, but shortly after I left, she inexplicably vomited a mouthful of blood and fainted. By the time I arrived, she was already unconscious in the hospital bed, her body even weaker than when she was first brought back. " Captain Luo frowned, his expression puzzled.
Upon hearing this, Vice-Captain Zhou recalled the words Yang Haoran had spoken to him on the mountain, and said, "She was likely remotely controlling the Demon Sealing Talisman that sealed the snake demon, intending to completely suppress it. However, the talisman's power must have targeted Emissary Yang as well. As a result, Emissary Yang forcibly destroyed the Demon Sealing Talisman, and she, who was controlling it, probably suffered a backlash, causing her injuries to worsen."
"So that's what happened. But how could a Demon Sealing Talisman attack Emissary Yang? Was it because the Black Talisman Master was controlling it from behind the scenes? " Captain Luo asked, sounding a bit uncertain.
"That's possible, but I suspect Emissary Yang might have a Demon Pill or something similar on him. Since he's human but recognized demonic script, I'm guessing he carries a Demon Pill. If my analysis is correct, then it's no surprise that the Demon Sealing Talisman would target him as well. " Vice-Captain Zhou said.
"A Demon Pill? " Captain Luo frowned in thought, then sighed with a look of admiration. "This Emissary Yang gives me an increasingly mysterious feeling. From being an unknown Night Watcher, he transformed into an Emissary of Death in such a short time, and his strength is unfathomable. I truly wonder how he accomplished it."
Vice-Captain Zhou thought for a moment, then said, "To undergo such a drastic change in such a short time, he must have encountered some extraordinary fortune we don't know about. Otherwise, it would be impossible for him to possess his current strength."
Captain Luo nodded, agreeing with Vice-Captain Zhou's assessment. Then he thought of something else, his expression growing even more serious than before.
"Has the Black Talisman Master's identity been confirmed?"
Vice-Captain Zhou nodded and said, "According to what we've learned, she is a Black Talisman Master from our Lecheng Talisman Order. She disappeared many years ago after going out to preach with her disciples."
"Does the Talisman Order know about this now? " Captain Luo asked.
"They should know by now. After all, there are Talisman Order disciples among our Spirit Police, so it's not surprising for the news to be relayed back to the Talisman Order. " Vice-Captain Zhou said.
"Since they know, they'll likely send people over soon. This matter is quite troublesome," Captain Luo said with a worried expression.
Vice-Captain Zhou felt a bit strange and said, "If the Talisman Order sends people, just let them take this Black Talisman Master away. What's so troublesome about that? Is Captain Luo perhaps trying to persuade the Black Talisman Master to join our Spirit Police?"
Captain Luo shook his head and said, "The Black Talisman Master holds a rather high position in the Talisman Order. How could they possibly be willing to join our Spirit Police? I'm already quite content if the Talisman Order sends Yellow Talisman Masters to assist us."
"Then what's the root of your current worry? " Vice-Captain Zhou grew even more perplexed.
"The snake demon harmed this Black Talisman Master so badly. What do you think this Black Talisman Master will do once she wakes up? " Captain Luo asked.
"She'll certainly seek revenge on the snake demon. If it were me, I'd do the same," Vice-Captain Zhou said.
"You're right, she'll definitely seek revenge on the snake demon. However, here's the problem: that snake demon is currently with Emissary Yang," Captain Luo said.
Upon hearing this, Vice-Captain Zhou finally reacted, his expression shifting.
"Back on the mountain, Emissary Yang didn't hand the snake demon over to our Spirit Police for handling, nor did he even consider it. When the Black Talisman Master goes to seek revenge on the snake demon, do you think Emissary Yang will stop her, or will he hand over the snake demon? If Emissary Yang hands over the snake demon, that's fine. But if he doesn't, what do you think the final outcome will be? " Captain Luo asked.
Vice-Captain Zhou swallowed hard, then muttered, "Conflict will definitely arise between the two sides, possibly even escalating into an outright fight, ultimately leading to a clash between the Lecheng Talisman Order and the Lecheng Underworld Office!"
"You're right, things could very well escalate to that point. However, if the snake demon were to join our Spirit Police, I'd have some confidence in resolving all of this. But how the situation will truly unfold, no one can say for sure right now. Still, I must prepare for this. That way, if events unfold as we anticipate, we won't be caught off guard. " Captain Luo said.
