Chapter 261: I'm Stewing Soup
Even after the woman's impatient words, Happy hadn't yet snapped out of his daze over her beauty. Seeing this, the woman moved to close the door without another word.
Only when he saw the woman angrily trying to close the door did Happy shake himself out of his stupor.
"No, no, no! Thank you, beautiful lady, thank you!"
Happy thanked her profusely as he quickly stepped inside, afraid that if he were too slow, he would never set foot in this little wooden hut again.
Once inside, Happy wiped the rain and saliva from his face, then thanked the woman again: "Beautiful lady, thank you so much, truly. If there's ever an opportunity, I'd like to repay you. Any way at all, I'd even be willing to devote my life to it."
The woman frowned, then said with a look of disgust, "What are you trying to say? Do you want to offer yourself to me?"
Seeing the woman's displeased expression, Happy quickly explained, "Just kidding, just kidding! Beautiful lady, please don't take it to heart."
The woman's expression didn't soften because of Happy's explanation. She still maintained a stern face, filled with wariness towards Happy.
"I don't particularly like jokes, and that kind of joke is the one I detest the most. If you speak nonsense again, I'll have no choice but to ask you to get out."
Previously, he wanted to enter the hut because he was worried his phone would get water damage and he wouldn't be able to continue streaming. That's why he tried every means to get inside.
But now, his reluctance to leave the hut had absolutely nothing to do with his phone or streaming. He simply wanted to spend a little more time with this beautiful woman in front of him. Even if she scowled at him, he felt incredibly happy and content.
At the same time, a strong fantasy blossomed in his heart: how much better it would be if he were lucky enough to have something happen with this fairy-like woman!
At this moment, Happy found himself praying, praying that the rain would continue to fall. That way, he could at least stay here for an hour. After an hour, if the rain hadn't stopped, he would beg the woman to let him stay longer, even if it meant feigning pitiful begging.
Seeing Happy readily nod, the woman scoffed. Without another word, she turned to head for the stove, leaving the wooden door open. She didn't seem to intend to close it.
"Beautiful lady, aren't you going to close the door? " Happy glanced at the wooden door, then looked at the woman, asking.
"Why close it? If you had ill intentions, wouldn't I have no way to escape? " the woman responded coldly, walking casually towards her simple stove.
Happy gave an awkward laugh and quickly explained, "Don't worry, I'm not that kind of person. I said I wouldn't do anything improper, and I certainly won't. You have to believe me. Besides, with the door open like this, the wind is blowing the rain inside. The house will be soaked soon."
As he spoke, Happy closed the door. The woman merely scoffed, offering no resistance.
The matter of his phone and live stream was completely forgotten by Happy at this moment. After closing the door, his heart inexplicably began to thump with excitement.
However, he tried his best not to show his excitement on his face, instead feigning casualness as he surveyed everything inside the room.
In truth, he just wanted to gaze at the woman a few more times, because simply looking at her made his heart pound, filling him with excitement, elation, and happiness.
But he didn't dare to act on it. He feared that being too obvious would anger the woman, and if she kicked him out, he would lose the chance to continue spending time with her. That would be a huge loss!
So, he pretended to be nonchalant as he looked around the room.
The room was very simple, with only a wooden bed, a makeshift stove, and some ordinary wooden furniture. Though small, it had everything one needed, like a sparrow complete with all its internal organs.
The light in the room came from a brazier, whose roaring flames illuminated the small space.
"Beautiful lady, why are you living alone on this mountain? " Happy found a topic and spoke first.
The woman sat in front of the stove, adding firewood. Although she was facing Happy, she didn't look at him. Instead, she calmly replied while adding wood to the fire.
"It's quiet on the mountain."
The woman's answer was direct and concise, but compared to before, there was a hint less of impatience in her voice. This made Happy happy; in his eyes, it was a good start.
"It seems you've grown tired of the city's hustle and bustle, which is why you chose to live here. But, as a girl, aren't you afraid living alone on this mountaintop? " Happy asked with a smile, his face full of curiosity.
"Afraid of what? Afraid of ghosts? Are ghosts scarier than people? " the woman retorted.
Happy chuckled. He didn't seem to understand the woman's meaning. He grabbed a wooden stool, sat down, and continued to laugh, "How could people be scarier than ghosts? When I first saw this wooden hut, my heart skipped a beat, and then when I heard a woman's voice coming from inside, I was even more startled!"
"Why? " the woman asked casually. She still didn't look at Happy, continuously adding firewood to the stove.
"Because I've watched many movies. If there's a small hut or a dilapidated temple deep in the mountains, there's always a female ghost or a female demon inside. They use various methods to seduce passing men, and after they succeed, they'll likely eat them all. So I was a little scared, worried that I'd run into that situation too."
Happy had a wide smile on his face as he said this. Not only was there no trace of fear or lingering fright, but he even showed deep anticipation.
"Hmph, they only eat scholars. Are you a scholar? " the woman scoffed, asking.
This question made Happy feel a bit awkward. He laughed and asked, "Does not finishing primary school count?"
"What do you think? " the woman retorted without even thinking.
Happy didn't know how to answer, only able to give a foolish grin.
"Although you're not a scholar, there's one thing you have in common with them."
These words from the woman instantly made Happy's eyes light up. According to descriptions in movies and novels, encountering female ghosts or female demons deep in the mountains didn't always end in being devoured; some even managed to "get to base. " Although he knew that was just movies and novels, completely different from reality, he still yearned for such good fortune to befall him.
So, he asked with an expectant look, "What do I have in common? What's the same about me and them?"
"You're as lecherous as them, and as oblivious to death," the woman said with a look of disgust.
If anyone else had said such words to him, Happy would have absolutely exploded in anger and retorted. However, facing this woman, he couldn't muster even a flicker of anger.
"Hehe, in my impression, very few scholars who went to the capital for imperial exams succeeded, but every single one of them was a pro at patronizing brothels. The key is, many of these guys would get a free ride and then pretend to be saints. It was truly disgusting. Don't even mention how much you dislike it, I hated it to no end too. It's just a different era. If they lived in our time, they'd probably be national protected animals by now."
The woman didn't reply, remaining silent. Happy grew a little anxious, as he didn't know if the woman agreed or disagreed with his statement.
If the woman agreed with him, then he could naturally continue the conversation, using this topic as an opening to chat with her about things she liked, first changing her attitude and perception of him, and then becoming friends. If everything progressed smoothly, then perhaps he could finally "deeply understand" her in a man's eyes.
However, the woman's reaction gave him no clue whether she agreed or disagreed, and she remained silent. In Happy's view, this topic was dead, and he had to change the subject.
Fortunately, he had prepared for this, so he wasn't flustered at all. He acted as if nothing had happened, very naturally changing the topic.
"Beautiful lady, are you stewing something? It smells so good! I could smell it from outside."
Seeing the woman guarding the stove, occasionally adding firewood, Happy shifted the conversation to that.
"Stewing soup," the woman replied indifferently.
"Stewing soup? What kind of soup is this? It's really fragrant. I've never smelled soup this delicious before," Happy licked his lips, smiling as he spoke.
He wasn't lying. He genuinely had never encountered soup that smelled so good.
The woman didn't respond, holding a piece of firewood, waiting to add it to the stove.
It was clear the woman didn't want to say much to Happy. Happy also noticed this, but he still didn't give up.
"The weather's starting to get chilly now, and the temperature on this mountain is incredibly low. At a time like this, if one could have a bowl of hot soup to warm up, it would be incredibly blissful."
Happy's implicit meaning was already very clear; how could the woman not understand?
This time, the woman was no longer as indifferent as before, nor did she ignore Happy as she had earlier. Her gaze turned to Happy, and that normally stern face surprisingly broke into a smile.
"This pot of soup is for making noodles. Would you like a bowl?"
The woman's smile was enchanting, yet it held a strange, eerie undertone. Especially when she uttered the word "noodles," the eeriness in her smile intensified a few shades.
Tragically, Happy only saw the enchanting beauty in the woman's smile, but not the strangeness within it. He was so captivated by the smile that he forgot his own name, simply chuckling foolishly and nodding incessantly like an idiot.
However, at that very moment, a chill suddenly spread through Happy's chest. The appearance of this chill instantly sent a shiver through him, and his mind cleared.
The woman before him was still the same woman, equally beautiful, equally enchanting. But the firewood she held in her hand was no longer a piece of wood—it was a white bone!
