Chapter 165: The True Evil Spirit!

The reason Jiang Dashi offered his suggestion was naturally because he didn't want to see the temple keepers under his command go to their deaths.

Judging by the expressions and reactions of the temple keepers under him, he knew they were unwilling to accept this task, which was why he spoke up.

However, Deng Feng had his own thoughts. His identity was different from Jiang Dashi's; their positions differed, their ideas differed, their personalities differed, and what they considered was completely unlike. Naturally, he wouldn't accept Jiang Dashi's suggestion.

After being angrily rebuked by Deng Feng, Jiang Dashi had no recourse but to nod in agreement, choosing to obey Deng Feng's arrangements.

It was just that deciding who should take over the positions of the three deceased individuals was an extremely difficult matter for him. No matter whom he assigned, it wouldn't just offend them, but would certainly leave a knot of resentment in their hearts.

Deng Feng tore through space and departed. No one knew where he went.

The Night Watchers also left the hall one after another, and Yang Haoran was naturally no exception.

Outside, the moon had long since risen. Beneath its glow, Yang Haoran's brows were slightly furrowed, his face lost in thought.

Whenever night fell, it was the domain of their Underworld Office. Yet now, seeing the grim expressions of the other Night Watchers, some even showing fear in their eyes, Yang Haoran couldn't help but feel a touch of emotion. Night Watchers were human too; they feared death just the same.

Yang Haoran had originally intended to speak with Jiang Dashi for a bit, but Jiang Dashi was burdened with worries and stressed by the immediate need to fulfill Deng Feng's arrangements. Thus, he was busier and more anxious than anyone.

Under these circumstances, Yang Haoran naturally wouldn't disturb Jiang Dashi. He shoved his hands into his pockets and, with a complex expression, left the South Lake Death God Temple.

Yang Haoran was certainly going to search for the Spirit Medium, but not because he was particularly obedient to Deng Feng. Rather, he felt this matter might have originated because of him, and that the other party was retaliating. He didn't want to see any more Night Watchers lose their lives because of his issues, so he wanted to find the culprit as soon as possible and then have Deng Feng eliminate this menace completely.

After getting into his car, Yang Haoran prepared to return to his convenience store first. The opponent had managed to kill three Night Watchers in a single day, so their strength was undoubtedly formidable. Even if he were to go out and search for them, he would need to make more preparations, lest he throw his own life away.

Back at the convenience store, Yang Haoran took out the wooden box. Inside were all the talismans Zhou had left behind. Although he couldn't draw talismans himself yet, he was growing to understand them more and more. These remaining talismans from Zhou were still immensely useful to him; if used in the right place, they might even save his life.

If the deaths of the three Night Watchers today were indeed the work of Du Xiao's master, then his current situation was dangerous. After all, Du Xiao had died by his hand, and he couldn't be certain if the other party had a way of knowing about it.

With the wooden box in hand, Yang Haoran was about to leave the convenience store, but just then, he suddenly sensed something, and his expression abruptly changed.

He sensed a strong burst of Yin Qi rapidly approaching his convenience store's location. Such potent Yin Qi could only belong to either a ghost, an Underworld Official, or a Spirit Medium.

All three possibilities existed, but given what had happened today, Yang Haoran instinctively leaned towards the last one.

His heart registered the danger, but before his body could react, a gust of Yin wind swept through. The green curtain suddenly billowed, and a figure appeared before Yang Haoran.

Everything happened too quickly. The instant Yang Haoran sensed the Yin Qi, he knew something was wrong. Though his brain had already issued commands, his body hadn't had time to react before the other party materialized in front of him.

The moment the figure appeared, his body finally began to respond to his brain's commands, but it was already too late. Yang Haoran found his body bound by an unseen force.

He looked down, only to discover his body enveloped by a mass of Yin Qi. This Yin Qi, like sturdy ropes, bound him tightly.

Yang Haoran's heart jolted wildly. He frantically channeled the Spirit Power within his body, hoping to dispel the Yin Qi clinging to him. But then, to his dismay, he tragically discovered that the Spirit Power he released not only failed to shake off the coiling Yin Qi but was instead swallowed by it.

Suddenly, a horrifying woman's face emerged from the mass of Yin Qi. Both of her ears had been severed, and the corners of her mouth were unnaturally stretched by a sharp implement. At first glance, she appeared to be smiling, but a closer look revealed she wasn't smiling at all; it was merely an illusion created by her forcibly lacerated mouth.

The face was inches away, and even Yang Haoran, accustomed as he was to ghosts, was startled by the sudden appearance of this terrifying visage.

If it were merely because of the other party's terrifying face, Yang Haoran, though startled, would have quickly recovered.

But the situation now was different. He stared in shock at the face so close to him, unable to react for a moment.

What caused such a shocked expression on his face wasn't the woman's terrifying visage, but her eyes: a pair of milky-white orbs.

An Evil Spirit!

This was a true Evil Spirit.

Yang Haoran's heart pounded furiously. Only then did he truly understand: the Yin Qi suddenly coiling around him wasn't just ordinary Yin Qi, but the transformed Spirit Body of an Evil Spirit.

As if finding the expression on Yang Haoran's face amusing, the Evil Spirit actually bared its teeth in a smile.

She was already terrifying without smiling; with that smile, she became even more so, gaining an added layer of cruelty.

The Evil Spirit licked its lips, its milky-white eyes gleaming with greed. The Yin Qi emanating from Yang Haoran, and the Spirit Power circulating within him, presented an immense temptation.

She couldn't help but slowly open her mouth, which widened like a python's, growing larger and larger.

And in her eyes, Yang Haoran was like captured prey, whom she intended to devour little by little.

Watching the female ghost's enormous mouth approach his face, Yang Haoran's expression turned grim, his heart anxious.

He was no ordinary person, and naturally wouldn't be frightened by the Evil Spirit's current actions. Evil Spirits had no physical form; aside from creating illusions, they couldn't directly harm his body. Even if he were currently trapped, he felt it had little to do with this particular Evil Spirit.

If the Evil Spirit wanted to devour his soul, or consume the Spirit Power within him, it would have to wait until after he died. Before his death, the Evil Spirit couldn't forcibly extract his Spirit Power and soul.

The Evil Spirit had only been able to devour his Spirit Power just now because he had actively released it. If he didn't release it willingly, the Evil Spirit would be powerless.

Therefore, this tactic of the Evil Spirit might terrify ordinary people, or deceive non-ordinary individuals unfamiliar with Evil Spirits, but it absolutely couldn't scare Yang Haoran, who was a Night Watcher.

The reason Yang Haoran's heart was anxious was because the Evil Spirit's illusion was too terrifying. If one compared a Half-step Evil Spirit to a true Evil Spirit, the illusions created by a Half-step Evil Spirit were like child's play; the gap in their power was unimaginable.

If he fell into an illusion created by this Evil Spirit, Yang Haoran didn't know if he would be able to break free.

The illusions created by a Half-step Evil Spirit were already quite potent; even to break through them, he had to activate his Ghost Eye.

However, the illusions cast by a true Evil Spirit were immeasurably more powerful than those of a Half-step Evil Spirit. If trapped within such an illusion, Yang Haoran truly had no confidence in breaking free.

If he couldn't break through, then there would only be one outcome: to be tormented to death by the opponent.

It was a truly frustrating way to die; in the end, he might not even catch a glimpse of the Evil Spirit's true form before being played to death.

Besides the Evil Spirit, there was also another person present, and this person was the primary source of Yang Haoran's inner anxiety.

The person before him was an old man, no taller than one and a half meters, hunched over and leaning on a walking stick. He looked like an elder whom a gust of wind could easily topple.

But Yang Haoran dared not think that way. If he did, he would be too naive, because the Yin Qi emanating from the old man was far, far stronger than his own.
