Chapter 655: The Play

"And who exactly are you people?" Lun Heping retorted, questioning them in turn.

A large group of people dressed uniformly in green, wearing sunglasses and masks late at night—they didn't look like normal folk. If Lun Heping hadn't been in a daze, he would have definitely steered clear of them.

"We're from the Free York Organization. If you've got no business here, scram!" A burly man emerged from the protesting crowd and immediately pushed him, urging him to leave.

"What the hell..." Lun Heping muttered under his breath, feeling rather annoyed.

For the past month, he had been entirely consumed by his assassination plan, completely oblivious to the online buzz surrounding the Free York separatist organization.

This was a group that constantly advocated for New York City's independence. Their actions were quite radical, and they had a considerable reputation within the Seris Empire.

Ordinarily, such a noisy little organization could be easily swept away by a few infantry brigades dispatched by the Empire.

Unfortunately, the Emperor, who held supreme power, was obsessed with the Spirit Qi resurgence and achieving immortality. He had poured almost all his energy into collecting Origin Stones, paying no mind to such trivial matters.

The military, from top to bottom, was itching for action. After all, such organizations were always walking military merits; a single head meant a third-class commendation. In times of peace, it wasn't easy to get promoted based on military achievements without relying on money.

However, the various ministers in charge of civil affairs, from top to bottom, had been heavily bribed by the Castiel Federation, which secretly supported the Free York organization. They turned a blind eye to them, strictly forbidding subordinates from interfering with freedom of assembly.

Thus, a peculiar state of balance had formed: a large group of Investigation Division agents, fully armed, watched the Free York organization stir up trouble. They didn't intervene in anything but kept a constant vigil.

Each and every one of them gnashed their teeth in frustration, but due to orders from above, they couldn't act.

...

"You're the 'hell'! Brothers, let's beat him up!"

The burly man who had shoved Lun Heping was already a hot-tempered thug. How could he tolerate such words? He immediately pulled out the tool of his trade from his waist and pointed it at Lun Heping.

Seven or eight other menacing men in the group also pulled out their weapons, ready to beat someone.

These were all people who lived on the streets; they got fired up at the mention of a fight, especially when they outnumbered their opponents.

As for Lun Heping, though he had just killed someone and had grown somewhat indifferent to human life, that didn't mean he was foolish enough to face a group of armed men with his bare hands.

However, before turning to run, he decided to strike first. He fiercely punched the nose bridge of the closest man, the one who had just shoved him, and followed it up with a vicious, full-force groin kick, just to ensure the man wouldn't catch up too quickly.

"There are Investigation Division agents over there!" After letting loose, he glanced around and immediately spotted a large number of fully armed Investigation Division agents less than ten meters away.

Without time to ponder why, or even to think about the murder he had just committed, Lun Heping instinctively rushed towards the agents who were already standing ready, as if they were a lifeline.

"Help!"

With dozens of rabid dogs chasing him from behind, ready to strike at a moment's notice, the young man unleashed an unprecedented burst of speed in his moment of life-or-death crisis.

The burly man, clutching his nose, hobbled behind him.

Lun Heping's two attacks had been delivered with deadly force, leaving his opponent unable to walk steadily.

"..."

The one thing the Investigation Division agents least wanted to happen had occurred once again.

Because their superiors had taken bribes and fudged the issue, they were completely helpless against this group. They couldn't fight them, nor could they scold them.

Previously, some colleagues had been injured in scuffles, but the assailants were released within a few days, essentially getting away with the assault.

Several other agents had even been disciplined by their superiors just for beating them up.

Through these repeated incidents, the low-ranking agents, to protect themselves, could only choose to maintain a safe distance and observe, avoiding contact as much as possible.

Now, Lun Heping was actively leading these protected mad dogs straight to them. Wasn't he just making things difficult for them?

Even if the kid had landed a heavy blow on one of their minor leaders, which was undeniably satisfying.

But under everyone's watchful eyes, those who sympathized with him couldn't do anything openly. They could only secretly leave a gap in their shield formation, allowing the scrawny Lun Heping to pass through.

"Don't be afraid! Those good-for-nothings won't dare to act."

The few leading thugs, who knew more due to past experiences, were well aware that the Investigation Division agents wouldn't dare to strike. So, they led their men and continued to charge.

Being called "good-for-nothings" would irritate anyone, but the agents still had to endure it and refrain from acting, only defending.

"These wastes, let's flank them from all sides!"

Seeing Lun Heping slip into the Investigation Division agents' defensive formation, the thug leader, feeling he had completely lost face, entirely forgot that his group had been hired by the Free York organization.

The megaphone was tossed aside, slogans forgotten. His sole focus was now on chasing down Lun Heping.

"This is a total misfortune from out of nowhere!"

Having ducked into the agents' formation, the young man gasped for a few breaths before coming to his senses. He looked around and realized he had truly stirred up a hornet's nest!

Over a hundred rioters had surrounded the formation from all four sides, completely blocking all escape routes. If they couldn't temporarily break through the agents' riot shield formation, they would likely tear him apart alive.

However, this peace wouldn't last much longer. Most of the agents quickly regretted their unspoken help; they still wanted to play it safe and not get involved in this muddy mess.

More and more people were slowly pushing Lun Heping away, trying to squeeze him out. No one cared whether he lived or died.

The grinning faces of those on the periphery drew closer and closer to him...

...

Suddenly, as he was being jointly pushed by several veteran agents towards the edge of the formation, his thigh brushed against something hard and solid.

A gun!

Yes, it was a gun.

Investigation Division agents actually carried guns, but they were not allowed to use this ultimate weapon unless the situation was extremely special or dangerous.

Otherwise, they would immediately face severe disciplinary action.

Lun Heping hardened his heart. With a swift grab, he snatched the pistol from the old agent's waist!

"Bang!"

"Bang!"

"Bang!"

He mimicked actions from movies, cocking the gun, then fired one round at each of the closest rioters!

Unfortunately, as someone firing a gun for the first time, the pistol's recoil severely affected his accuracy. Out of three shots, only one hit, and that one, aimed at the chest, struck an arm instead.

"The Investigation Division fired!"

This sudden strike completely stunned the people outside. They had been causing a ruckus for so long, and the Investigation Division agents hadn't dared to utter a peep, but suddenly they unleashed their ultimate move—hot lead.

"Someone grabbed a gun!" Even louder than the shouts from outside were the cries of a few veteran agents who exchanged knowing smiles.
