Chapter 59: The Eve of Tranquility
At eight in the morning, Bai Mo appeared in the hotel lobby at the designated gathering point, carrying a suitcase.
"Why are you carrying a suitcase to a conference?" Liang Gong asked with a smile.
"Nothing much."
A short while later, the various team leaders arrived one after another at the gathering point. After Feng Dong finally showed up, Ye Zi began to speak.
"Since you're all here, I'll mention something first. This morning, Captain Bai Mo told me that he had a premonition that something dangerous would happen in Rome today, and he hoped everyone would be cautious." Ye Zi casually brought up the matter, making no mention of Bai Mo's involvement in anything yesterday.
"Captain Ye, could you be more specific?"
"You can ask him."
"Captain Bai, why did you suddenly have such a premonition? Is it perhaps your ability?"
"Could you explain the reason?"
Everyone crowded around Bai Mo, asking questions. Of course, due to the oppressive aura of his immense power, no one dared to utter words like "persecutory delusion," even though many thought it.
"I don't wish to explain anything. In short, believe it or not, it's up to you. I've said all I'm going to say."
"So that's why Captain Bai came down directly with his suitcase?" Yue Yu's remark made everyone's attention focus on Bai Mo's hand once more.
Bai Mo, holding his suitcase, sat in a corner as usual, silently awaiting the pickup vehicle. The others discussed Bai Mo's and Ye Zi's words amongst themselves.
"Captain Bai doesn't seem like he's joking."
"You've been in contact with him for so long; has he ever genuinely used any special abilities? It's quite possible this premonition is his ability. Better safe than sorry; I'm going to go collect some valuables first."
"Speaking of which, did you notice Captain Ye also carrying a small bag? That doesn't seem like Captain Ye's usual style."
"This morning, when I got up for breakfast, I just happened to see Captain Bai Mo coming out of Captain Ye's room..." Rong Jingya whispered, her voice so faint that only those nearby could hear it.
Although Bai Mo was seated far away, he heard the conversation in the small circle through his abilities. He couldn't be bothered to intervene; such gossip only gets worse the more you try to explain it. Meanwhile, on the other side, Ye Zi, who had barely caught the gist of the gossip circle's discussion with her heightened ability user hearing, also felt a bit speechless.
"I never would have thought..."
"Truly, I never would have thought..."
The gossip circle said in unison.
"In that case, it seems Captain Bai's words are highly credible. Even Captain Ye has made preparations. We should also quickly pack some valuables. Carrying a few kilograms won't affect our combat abilities at all, and if worst comes to worst, others can help carry them for us."
After reaching a consensus, everyone returned to their hotel rooms to pack their belongings, leaving only Yun Jie, Xiao Hao, Ye Zi, and Bai Mo seated.
"Why aren't you packing?" Xiao Hao asked Yun Jie, who was sitting next to him.
"What's there to pack? The most valuable thing is myself. My phone is with me, my wallet is with me. The rest isn't important." Yun Jie said nonchalantly.
"I agree with you. Everything else is illusory; only one's self is the most important. Can't let go of anything, acting like a woman."
"That 'woman's' over there. Go for it." Yun Jie pointed towards Bai Mo.
"That woman's too fierce, I can't handle her."
The two continued their everyday banter, exchanging dirty jokes, while Bai Mo, seated to the side, pondered his own thoughts.
He had tried for a long time, but other Spirit Energy-infused organs, such as his heart, showed no signs of merging with his Life Field; there wasn't even a hint of establishing a connection.
Therefore, Bai Mo speculated that the process of Spirit Energy-infused organs merging with the Life Field was constrained by the level of Spirit Energy conversion. As long as he couldn't complete full body Spirit Energy conversion, he would remain stuck at the stage of two organs merging into the life field, with the integration of a third organ remaining far away (far off).
However, the hurdle of the brain was simply too difficult. Bai Mo figured it was pure luck that he had reached the one-third mark.
"Could it be that in the future, I'll also need to rely on transfusing cells from other ability users and engaging in a bloody battle to break through?" This thought suddenly sprouted in his mind.
With this idea, he began to consider related matters, planning to conduct detailed research when he returned to the laboratory.
Bai Mo used high-intensity thinking to force himself to calm down, to stop thinking about the unknown threat. The pain itself might only last a moment, but what truly tormented him was the long process of waiting. He was experiencing all of this now, patiently awaiting the appearance of the unknown threat.
Twenty minutes later, the "refugees" who had packed their valuables descended from their rooms and boarded the bus arranged by the conference organizers. The driver was a bit surprised to see almost everyone carrying a bag when he greeted them, but they casually made up an excuse to brush him off.
Before long, the conference venue appeared before their eyes.
"Now this is a proper venue. Each hall is a square with sides a thousand meters long, unlike the Dao Academy's top floor, which even with four combined, felt too cramped." Yun Jie said quietly.
"When it was planned, no one expected ability users to become strong so quickly. Before you know it, they've reached the limits. That's why Captain Ye and Captain Chen were standing in place yesterday, clashing their Life Fields. The venue is truly too small for us, but it's great for our team members to practice." Liang Gong took over from Yun Jie.
"Speaking of which, where are Chen Bo and the others?" Zheng Cha asked casually.
"They're military personnel, and this time, they're acting as bodyguards for their accompanying superiors. They should have already arrived at the venue." Ye Zi said.
"We really are just a bunch of mercenaries." Yun Jie, who spoke without restraint, grumbled.
Sitting in his seat, Bai Mo boredly listened to the nonsense on stage. The group around him also pulled out their phones to pass the time.
"Bureaucratic practices are truly boring." Yun Jie cursed the organizers while playing Landlord on his phone. "If you're going to fight, just fight. Why so much useless talk?"
"Playing Landlord is one thing, but you're even playing the sound effects out loud?" Yue Yu, hearing the "call Landlord, grab Landlord" sound effects, said to Yun Jie with annoyance.
"What's wrong with playing it out loud? Do you, an artsy girl, look down on my common game? Am I disturbing your elegance?" Yun Jie retorted.
"You... you... you scoundrel." Yue Yu was momentarily at a loss for words, unable to out-argue Yun Jie, so she decided to bury her head in the sand. "I am an elegant person. I don't stoop to a bumpkin's level."
The two continued their usual bickering, not giving any thought to the issue Bai Mo had raised earlier.
The atmosphere still seemed perfectly tranquil; the earth-shattering change he had anticipated had not appeared.
