Chapter 567: Boundless
Everyone on the Land of White was tightly interconnected through this network, gradually merging into a true holistic entity.
“Boundless... truly boundless...” After her memories from over a decade ago were reawakened, Ni Lu, completely engulfed by the shadows of the past, still couldn’t forget anything that had happened on that day ten years prior.
...
After being sent to the kindergarten, she learned almost all the daily habits of human society within a month.
Three months later, her language proficiency was comparable to that of other native speakers, allowing her to converse with them freely.
A year later, she completed all the learning content for elementary school and advanced directly to junior high.
By ten years ago, which was two years after her “rebirth,” Ni Lu’s capabilities in all aspects were no different from an ordinary high school student.
It was also at this point that the Human Federation completed its “strategic transfer” from Earth to the Moon.
As one of the last nodes connected to the God Body network to fall into slumber, she witnessed the entire process of the last Federation shuttle leaving and Earth gradually being submerged, which became perhaps the lifelong shadow haunting her.
The sunlight was continuously devoured by darkness, and white mist surged wildly outward, centered around the position of that figure.
Ni Lu watched her former “kindred” being pulled out of the earth one by one by the white mist, like radishes.
Like her, they had lost most of their external bodies, leaving behind only a small core of matter that truly belonged to them.
The muddled pan-consciousnesses, before they could even react to what was happening, were hypnotized by the omnipresent white mist.
What followed was, in Ni Lu’s eyes, the most terrifying and unforgettable scene of her life.
That layer of white mist, using the exact same method she herself once used to assimilate other microorganisms, “devoured” all the husks shed by the pan-consciousnesses, turning them into a part of itself!
It ate everything, not a single bacterium remained!
Hundreds and thousands of pan-consciousnesses—99.9 percent of their shed bodies—all became a part of it.
An alien disruptor swept the entire planet clean of microorganisms, taking the place of the pan-consciousnesses to become the true master of the microscopic world!
At that moment, she felt a suffocating sensation, a struggle for breath, because everywhere her senses reached, there was only that existence which claimed it “could be” her kin.
She was surrounded, overwhelmed by the other’s body... In a dizzying spin, Ni Lu’s vision went black, and she lost consciousness.
When she awoke again, she was already in the virtual reality world.
...
“Ni... Lu...!” A loud shout from the little cat demon finally pulled Ni Lu back from the quagmire of memories into reality.
“Sorry, I remembered that day again.”
“Don’t think so much about it. Watch my Restorative Meow-Meow Punch!” Lin Xianglan transformed back from her girl form into a little cat. Disregarding the dress she had been wearing falling to the ground, she pounced directly onto the sky-blue humanoid in front of her, continuously rubbing its face with her two cat paws.
Under the onslaught of the cat’s paws, Ni Lu’s face continuously deformed like a water balloon, at times oval, at times triangular.
“Feeling better?” After pestering for quite a while, the little cat asked, as if seeking praise.
“Yes, yes, much better. If I wasn’t, my human form would be gone from all this fuss.” She scooped up the little cat.
Lin Yuedong, standing nearby, was completely bewildered throughout the entire exchange. He had invested all his skill points into the development of transfiguration spells, and was utterly clueless when it came to comforting people.
However, he had heard about Ni Lu’s experiences before, and could roughly understand her feelings.
If that scene were viewed from a human perspective, it would be akin to a devil appearing. A devil that, right before her eyes, devoured every single person on Earth raw, without even dipping them in soy sauce. And the flesh and blood it consumed then formed a sea of corpses and blood that completely drowned her.
Encountering such a nightmare, anyone would develop some psychological trauma.
...
“I’m going to work.”
“Going to play with that bunch of bratty kids again?” Xianglan asked.
“I quite like children.”
“I’m starting to wonder, are you really not human?” The little cat persisted. “How can you like their young more than humans do, and even choose to work at a kindergarten?”
The little cat demon had no affection for children whatsoever, because every time she got close to them, she would be chased and petted relentlessly for being too cute.
Unable to harm anyone, Lin Xianglan could only choose to hide as far away as possible.
“This time, I’m coming with you to see. I can transform into a human now; they definitely won’t be petting me anymore!” The cat demon once again unleashed her transfiguration spell, transforming into an invincible, youthful beauty.
After transforming, Lin Xianglan was once again in a state of not wearing a stitch. She strutted along nonchalantly, not feeling a thing amiss.
Having been a cat for so long, she had never developed any habit of wearing clothes.
“Clothes...” Lin Yuedong held the dress that had just dropped to the ground in both hands, the flickering light in his eyes betraying his agitated state of mind.
“Oh.” Lin Xianglan calmly took the dress and, without a shred of self-consciousness, put it on right in front of the two of them.
...
The three of them walked into the kindergarten without any hindrance.
The professions of security guard and gatekeeper had completely exited the stage of history after the system was fully implemented. With the omnipresent system, there was no longer anyone looking to take revenge on society by targeting a kindergarten.
All crimes, at their root, had human perpetrators. Once everyone was controlled by the system, naturally, there would be no more crime.
“Dongdong, what was your childhood like?” Lin Xianglan nonchalantly called out Lin Yuedong’s nickname, as if the previous scene had never happened.
“Facial cleanser... shampoo... facial cleanser... shampoo...” Lin Yuedong was still lost in thought, muttering something under his breath.
“One Hundred Thousand Volts!” The young girl flicked an arc of electricity from her fingertip, sending it straight into the back of his waist.
“Aaahhh!” The faint current, perfectly timed, dispelled all urges, instantly plunging him into Sage Mode.
“My childhood, you ask? My dad was a gambler who loved to drink and go on drunken rampages, and my mom played mahjong until late every day before coming home. From a young age until now, I’ve pretty much always been on my own.
That’s why I really envy them now—they always have someone who cares.” Lin Yuedong pointed at the children in the classroom.
“Don’t they also not have parents?”
After more than ten years of continuous adjustments, the Land of White’s policies had undergone several shifts in societal thought, from initially requiring parents to have a “license to operate” to now simply entrusting all children to professional caregivers for unified upbringing, completely decoupling children from their biological parents.
PS: Occasionally promoting a book, “Super God Evolution,” I feel it counts as a modern cultivation genre?.
