Chapter 302: Sounds from the Bedroom |
“Mm, nothing I’m not used to.”
Li Chongming said casually, then suddenly noticed something. He had just sat down not long ago, but got right back up again.
He turned to Ye Rong and said,
“Mom, I’ll go pour you a cup of tea!”
“Alright.”
Ye Rong was very fond of this clever side of Li Chongming—this was one of the things she valued most in him.
Back when her husband had passed away, she’d already done some digging into Li Chongming in secret. Once she realized how outstanding he was… and compared him to her daughter’s ex-husband, Liu Changqing,
In her heart, there was an immediate ranking.
In Ye Rong’s opinion, Liu Changqing couldn’t hold a candle to Li Chongming.
When her daughter Li Wanran had brought Liu Changqing home during high school, looking totally indifferent as she announced they were getting married, Ye Rong had been strongly opposed.
But before Li Zhengmao passed away, Ye Rong hadn’t seemed to have any say in the household at all.
Even though she was never mistreated in daily life, over the years—shaped by her personality since childhood—Ye Rong’s resentment toward her husband had only deepened.
She even started to hate him.
She had purposely arranged for her daughter to meet Li Chongming again, and even orchestrated a little show to help them reconnect.
Rather than doing it for her daughter’s happiness, it was more like...
Her subconscious simply wanted to go against the decisions her deceased husband had made.
Watching Li Chongming walk out with the teacup in hand, Ye Rong smiled and nodded, feeling even more assured that her earlier decision had been the right one.
Even if her daughter had two kids, even if Liu Changqing had never actually done anything wrong... in Ye Rong’s eyes, her decisions were never wrong.
She firmly believed that.
“Try this tea. I asked a friend to buy it for me.”
“Really… That’s very thoughtful of you.”
After speaking, Ye Rong lifted the teacup and took a light sip with the most graceful posture, then slowly placed the cup back down.
Her eyes showed appreciation as she looked toward Li Chongming.
“It really is good.”
“As long as you like it.”
After exchanging some polite words, Li Chongming casually brought something up, glancing at her with a slightly puzzled look.
“By the way, Mom, what brought you here all of a sudden this time…”
“Oh, I almost forgot.”
Prompted by Li Chongming’s reminder, Ye Rong seemed to suddenly remember something.
“Starting tomorrow, stop getting involved with your old company. I heard some whispers—An Yuanyao’s younger brother might be targeting you.”
“Really?”
“But don’t worry too much. I can handle it. The An family does have some connections, but they won’t be a real threat to us. After all… as long as An Quancheng doesn’t step in himself, those small-time games of theirs won’t cause any waves.”
Ye Rong’s words were like a shot of adrenaline. After hearing them, Li Chongming finally let out a breath of relief.
He couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
His decision... had truly been the right one.
If Ye Rong hadn’t made him those promises in private back then… even if you gave Li Chongming ten times the courage, he wouldn’t have dared to cut ties with An Yuanyao so easily.
As for Ye Rong—saying these things with such confidence—it was because she was absolutely sure.
She firmly believed… that An Quancheng wouldn’t stoop so low as to go after Li Chongming over a kid’s relationship.
Besides, the Li and An families used to be on good terms…
Ye Rong thought about it, and recalling her recent feelings while managing the company, her gaze instinctively shifted to Li Chongming.
Even though it was a bit early, still…
At that thought, she seemed to make up her mind, ready to reveal the true reason she came here alone today.
After pausing for a moment, she said,
“Starting tomorrow… come help me out at the company.”
“…”
Li Chongming, who had been secretly rejoicing inside, widened his eyes as soon as he heard those words, as if he’d just heard something incredibly unexpected.
His whole body trembled slightly, unable to control it.
It was the kind of reaction that only came from extreme excitement.
But he didn’t show it too much—just let a hint of joy leak through. He looked like he was about to agree, but then suddenly clammed up, as if he remembered something.
Ye Rong noticed this detail right away.
She asked him like she was confirming something,
“Are you planning to turn me down?”
“No, Mom… I’m just a little concerned…”
“Concerned about what?”
“I’m thinking… if I do this, won’t people start gossiping?”
Hearing this, Ye Rong was stunned at first. Then she seemed to realize something and chuckled slightly, shaking her head as she replied,
“You really don’t have to worry about that. The fact that you’re my son-in-law is exactly why I trust you. Otherwise… I wouldn’t ask you to come.”
“Then I’m relieved…”
Letting out a breath, Li Chongming looked like a weight had been lifted off his chest.
With that out of the way, Ye Rong went on to discuss some recent company issues with him.
Li Chongming responded to each one with proposed solutions or ideas.
They talked for nearly an hour before Ye Rong finally noticed the time.
She lowered the arm she had lifted and took her eyes off her watch, then said,
“It’s getting late—I’ll head back to the company now. Come to my office first thing in the morning.”
“Got it.”
As she spoke, Ye Rong grabbed her bag and walked toward the door. Li Chongming also got up to see her out.
They went from the living room to the doorway. To show his loyalty, Li Chongming deliberately picked up the pace and got to the door ahead of her, ready to open it himself.
Seeing this, Ye Rong’s opinion of him rose even higher.
She was just about to praise him when—
Bang!
A loud thud interrupted her.
It sounded like someone had accidentally kicked something.
Both of them froze.
Ye Rong immediately turned around toward the source of the noise, thinking hard.
That sound… it seemed to have come from the bedroom.
With that thought in mind, her expression suddenly darkened. She turned back and stared at Li Chongming, not saying anything at first, but giving him a look like she was about to judge him.
Li Chongming widened his eyes, looking just as surprised, as if he had no idea where the sound came from either.
But in reality…
The moment the noise came from the room, his heart had already started racing.
Even though it was December, a cold month, there was a line of sweat forming at his temple from the nerves.
He swallowed instinctively and said, like he was trying to cover something up,
“Did something fall over?”
