Chapter 104: Sudden Ambush |
...
Originally, Veldeline didn't want to kill Jonas.
But Jonas knew too much, and she couldn't sense his presence.
Jonas posed too great a threat to her.
However, facing such a terrifying sudden attack,
Jonas didn't retreat. Raising his right hand, he simply blocked the pincer with his iron sword.
Upon collision,
a metallic clang rang out instead.
The sound of corrosion came from Frostclear, and had Jonas not protected it with an energy burst, the sword's surface would have been corroded.
Unable to gain advantage over Jonas, the giant ant issued a threat.
Of course, Jonas couldn't understand it.
He turned around and pressed down with his hand, pinning the ant to the ground.
No matter how the ant struggled with its six legs, it couldn't move an inch.
...
Jonas smiled and said, "This isn't fun anymore, Miss Veld."
Veldeline gritted her teeth as she looked at Jonas before her.
She could share Cook's senses and vision, knowing exactly what terrifying strength Jonas possessed.
How could this be?
How could someone so young possess such power?
"Miss Veld, trust me, I have this capability.
Do you really want to keep working for your father's killers, being controlled by them, even having your entire Darkstone organization dragged onto the battlefield as cannon fodder?
I'm the only one who can pull you out of this dangerous situation, Miss Veld."
Veldeline looked at Jonas and sighed helplessly, slumping onto the bed with resignation.
"I... I have no choice.
The Sand Tribe has taken my sister hostage, along with all the children Father adopted.
Given their methods, I can't refuse to work for them.
Even Darkstone has been drained by them, without enough magic crystals to establish proper defenses.
Many in Darkstone have already died without protection.
Sigh..."
Ever since her adoptive father's death, one problem after another had weighed her down until she could barely breathe, compounded by her illness.
She was just a nineteen-year-old girl. Facing so many troubles, she sometimes wanted to run away or even end her life.
But thinking of her adoptive father's trust and all her sisters,
she had no choice.
She truly longed for someone to rely on.
.....
Jonas looked at the exhausted young woman before him and gently crouched down to meet her eye level.
"Miss Veld, I understand your situation," he said softly yet firmly. "But trust me, I can help you resolve all this."
Veldeline raised her head, her lifeless eyes searching for something. "You... can really do it?"
"Of course." Jonas extended his hand. "First, I'll help rescue your sister and the others. Second, I can cure your illness too."
Veldeline's body trembled slightly. "But... the Sand Tribe's base is heavily guarded, and..."
"Shh—" Jonas made a silencing gesture. "Just tell me their location. Leave the rest to me."
After a moment's hesitation, Veldeline finally made her decision. "Alright... I'll tell you. But please be careful. There are at least three Frost Silver-level experts guarding the Sand Tribe's base."
Jonas flashed a confident smile. "Perfect."
He stood up and took out a faintly glowing magic crystal from his pocket. "Take this. It can temporarily relieve your symptoms. Wait for me to return."
Veldeline accepted the crystal, surprised by the powerful life force it contained. "This is...?"
"A small gift." Jonas turned toward the door. "Oh, and your giant ant is quite cute. Tell it not to be so fierce next time."
Veldeline's face reddened slightly. "Cook... just protects me too much."
Jonas waved his hand and gradually disappeared into the night.
Veldeline clutched the magic crystal tightly, feeling a long-lost glimmer of hope. "Maybe... he really can change everything..."
Meanwhile, Jonas had already melted into the darkness.
Jonas moved through the night like a ghost, Veldeline's intel clear in his mind. The Sand Tribe had established an extensive underground base beneath Luyuns City, its entrance disguised as an ordinary warehouse leading to a complex network dozens of meters below.
"Three Frost Silver-level, twelve Bronze-level, and several Iron-level guards..." Jonas calculated silently. "A frontal assault isn't a problem, but it would alert them."
He decided to employ his specialty—assassination.
Outside the warehouse, two Sand Tribe guards patrolled boredly. Their bodies were covered in fine sand particles, a unique defensive trait of their race.
"Heard they caught more Darkstone spies today," one guard muttered.
"Tch. Those human insects will all be wiped out eventually," the other replied disdainfully. "His Highness said once we take Giant Spirit City, we'll eliminate all of Darkstone's—"
His words were abruptly cut off as a cold glint slit his throat. Blood gushed out but strangely hung suspended in midair, not a drop hitting the ground.
The other guard barely had time to react before feeling a chill in his chest. Looking down, he saw a sword tip protruding from his heart before darkness claimed him.
Jonas quietly caught both corpses and dragged them into the shadows. His Shadowmeld skill perfectly concealed all traces of movement.
The warehouse door was covered in Sand Tribe's unique rune traps that would trigger alarms if touched without authorization. Yet Jonas walked straight through the door seam—a special application of his Shadowmeld ability.
Inside the dim, damp warehouse filled with goods, Jonas immediately noticed several unnatural sand distributions on the floor.
"Traps..."
He deftly avoided these hidden alarms and arrived before a wall at the warehouse's rear. An ordinary landscape painting hung there, but Jonas could sense faint magical waves from behind it.
"This is the place."
He pressed his hand against the frame, sending magic pulses at a specific frequency. Seconds later, the wall slid open silently, revealing a descending staircase.
At the staircase's end was a spacious underground hall where four Sand Tribe guards chatted idly. Behind them stood a heavy stone door covered in intricate runes.
"...that human woman Lise tried to escape again today."
"Ha! If His Highness didn't need her to control that blind girl, she'd have been fed to the sandworms long ago."
"Speaking of which, that blind girl's ability is really useful. His Highness said after taking Giant Spirit City, he'll gouge out her eyes to make artifacts..."
