Chapter 103: Night Attack |
So, he actually retained consciousness last night? Did he think he was experiencing sleep paralysis?
Guan Shan paused for a moment, then understood.
It seemed that Jiang Siyan mistook the previous times when Xiang Wen had drugged him at night for ghost attacks.
Blurred between consciousness and unconsciousness, he had confused Xiang Wen for a ghost?
However, come to think of it…
"Mr. Jiang, didn't you verify all the information? How come you don’t know who the person you hired contacted?"
Guan Shan pretended to be puzzled.
Verifying but still not knowing meant one thing: Jiang Siyan hadn’t really looked carefully.
After hiring the detective, he just waited for the results, without any of his own thoughts.
"You, I…this, I…"
Jiang Siyan was momentarily speechless, then, feeling both humiliated and angry, he remembered he needed help and forced a smile. "I just forgot, okay? If you feel it’s not enough, just tell me what you need, as long as I can do it! Just get me out of here…"
Jiang Siyan had been wrestling with this for almost a week. From the day Guan Shan arrived, he had been wondering if he should ask for his help.
Guan Shan was his only acquaintance in Sacred Heart Hospital, but they were practically enemies.
Then again, although they were practically enemies, Guan Shan was his only familiar face he could ask for help.
Even Jiang Siyan's family didn't believe him and left him in this terrifying hospital. He couldn't think of anyone else to turn to for help.
But asking Guan Shan wasn’t easy.
Previously, Guan Shan had publicly mocked him, giving him no face at all. Asking Guan Shan for help now felt like admitting he was useless.
Every time Jiang Siyan wanted to ask, he couldn't convince himself to do it.
What made him let go of his pride was last night's nightmare experience.
Jiang Siyan stammered, "I really saw a ghost last night. I have to leave here. If this continues, it will eat me… Do you know how it feels? I was lying there, unable to move, those black things closing in, and I could clearly feel the pain of my arm being torn apart…"
Recalling the scene, he became more agitated. "They had sharp teeth and cold venom. I could feel it clearly, their teeth piercing my skin bit by bit, injecting venom. I wanted to struggle but my body wouldn’t listen!"
"I really felt like a lamb waiting to be slaughtered…"
No, you were just drugged and woke up midway.
Guan Shan couldn't help but think.
Jiang Siyan clutched his arm in fear. "When I woke up this morning, I thought it was a dream, but…"
He spat, face serious. "I found a bit of blood on my arm—what I saw in the dream was real!"
No, you were just given a heavy injection and some unknown drug.
...Well, that’s still pretty scary.
Jiang Siyan's tone grew more terrified. "But I couldn't find any wounds on my body. The pain was still there, but there were no wounds. It must be eating my soul!"
No, it's just the drugs making you heal faster...
Guan Shan, despite mentally countering these points, understood how everything seemed like a ghostly attack if he hadn't seen the events last night and known that Xiang Wen was experimenting on patients.
One couldn't blame Jiang Siyan for being this scared.
"Okay, okay, I get it, you saw a ghost. If there's nothing else, I want to keep watching TV. We can talk tonight?"
Guan Shan saw Li Hong standing outside, pretending to be impatient as he pushed Jiang Siyan away. "You'll be discharged once you're well, so I suggest seeing a doctor. If you think your doctor isn't good, I recommend Dr. Lu. She's excellent. Hope you recover soon."
While hinting to Jiang Siyan, Guan Shan didn't believe relying on Lu Qiuqiu would help.
Discharge required the approval of the director and vice director. The vice director was Xiang Wen, so that meant walking into a trap. Forcibly taking people away without enough evidence wouldn’t convince anyone that Xu Rong, diagnosed with a mental illness, was telling the truth.
Moreover, many patients treated by Xiang Wen were left in Sacred Heart Hospital by their "willing" families. If Xiang Wen twisted the truth, these people might support him.
Even if Guan Shan were as eloquent as Ji Xiaolan, he couldn’t talk his way out of this.
Jiang Siyan, hearing this, became furious, pointing at Guan Shan angrily, "I've told you this much, and you still don't believe me?!"
Li Hong, seeing his overreaction, quickly stepped in. "Mr. Jiang, please don’t shout in the ward."
On the other side, Jiang Siyan's caretaker rushed in and sedated him without a word.
Guan Shan frowned. "Is his condition really that severe?"
The caretaker explained, "The vice director tested and evaluated this patient yesterday, believing his condition had become aggressive and should be moved to the ICU. The paperwork should be done tomorrow. He might harm you, so sedation was necessary."
The vice director was Xiang Wen, right?
Sacred Heart Hospital had truly become his domain. The earlier dissenting opinions were probably just to make Xu Rong's parents anxious and fall into his trap.
Guan Shan shook his head, feeling his hint to Jiang Siyan was in vain.
He watched as the caretaker took Jiang Siyan back to his room and then to the ICU, where Xu Rong was also kept. Thinking that last night's commotion might have alerted the enemy, he figured tonight might be his turn.
"Let's wait one more night. If they don't act tonight, I'll go to the basement. With both witnesses and evidence, the problem should be manageable."
Guan Shan looked out the window at the patients on the lawn. Xu Rong was no longer among them.
---
11 PM.
Xiang Wen walked down the corridor towards Guan Shan's room.
Shadowman followed in the shadows, vigilantly observing.
Since failing to catch the other spy the previous night, he had been paranoid.
Xiang Wen took out the key and unlocked Guan Shan's door, whispering, "This person's identity is suspicious. He's a reporter, probably here because of Xu Rong… But he will never find out the truth."
Shadowman suddenly recalled hearing about a certain Esper recently. "Reporter…"
