Chapter 88: It’s Him, Again

Guan Shan waited for the cooldown to finish, then activated [Gravity Control] again, turning into a streak of light shooting toward the boss’s face. The boss wasn’t stupid and immediately used its arms to shield itself. Despite the dense attacks, Guan Shan got hit once, losing half his health, making his eyelids twitch.

“This is too scary, I should heal up... Wait, what am I doing?”

He paused, then remembered he had activated [Gravity Control] and was accelerating. “Oh, I should charge!”

Guan Shan quickly spotted a flaw in the defense. “Hey? When it tried to hit me, it left a gap in its defense!”

“The passive of the [Mask of Agony] has also triggered!”

Guan Shan seized the opportunity, cutting through the blockade! He charged straight at the grotesque mass of three sets of limbs and bricks. Above it was the man’s face.

Up close, he saw the man's joyful, rosy face whispering continuously, “Wife, darling, follow me... Follow me, you’ll be happy. Look, I’m so happy. Become one with me... We won’t be separated or leave... This is our home, no one will ever chase us out...”

His expression was fixed, unchanging, but it was unclear where the voice was coming from.

The expression was happy and joyful, but the tone was pleading and sorrowful.

Guan Shan’s scalp tingled. This monster was the most human-like he had encountered. Excluding the bricks, the face was very lifelike.

Just thinking about striking it made him nervous. But now, the arrow was on the bowstring, and it had to be shot. Guan Shan was charging with gravitational acceleration, and his personal feelings didn’t matter.

Besides, he had already made it this far; he couldn’t stop now.

“Shing!”

The Demon Blade in Guan Shan’s hand hummed with excitement. The blade cut through the air, directly severing the man’s head.

The blade flashed past.

Due to the strong inertia, the head flew off, and all the chaotic bricks and concrete froze in place.

-103765!

A colossal number appeared before his eyes.

“Phew…”

Guan Shan exhaled, stepping on the frozen, oddly shaped bricks, and landed at the doorway of the house.

Then he sensed something was wrong.

Guan Shan consumed three [Painkillers], watching his health bar recover, and pondered over his reckless charge, feeling a lingering fear. “What was wrong with me earlier? I almost died several times… I didn’t even use healing items or take any evasive actions.”

He muttered, “Strange, didn’t I initially plan to kite it to death, like the driver? How did I end up charging in with a sword?”

Guan Shan couldn’t figure it out, but since the instance was over, the internal influence seemed irrelevant.

“It must have been the boss’s debuff.”

Guan Shan shook his head and looked at the settlement interface.

[Countdown: 00:59]

Guan Shan watched the deformed, collapsing apartment, contemplating whether to save the resident. But then he realized the NPC’s safe house was 704.

Guan Shan wandered around, opening the kitchen door to Zhao Keji’s horror-stricken gaze, unexpectedly finding some items.

Guan Shan rubbed his chin, pondering, “I guess these items were meant to deal with the boss, but I bulldozed through…”

“Did the resident escape already? If not… there’s nothing I can do.”

Guan Shan ensured the apartment was devoid of life and escorted the NPC to the entrance.

As soon as Zhao Keji stood firm, he asked, “Thank you, um…”

Guan Shan interrupted, “Call me Red Scarf. No need for thanks.”

Zhao Keji was left speechless, nearly choking on his words.

You don’t look like a Red Scarf; you look like a bloodthirsty demon…

Guan Shan ignored him. What’s with the NPC’s excessive dialogue? Once the simulation ends, this obviously temporary NPC ceases to exist. Escaping is more urgent.

Otherwise, he’d be seen talking to the air... even more socially embarrassing! Zhao Keji wanted to say more, but could only extend a helpless hand, watching his benefactor vanish.

“Rumble…”

He heard the sound of the building collapsing, turned, and saw the entire apartment collapsing, quickly stepping back.

Special Security Group members arrived shortly after, cordoning off the area and pacifying the awakened residents under the pretext of a forced demolition. Zhao Keji was treated as a “special incident survivor,” first questioned, then silenced.

Such survivors can’t be handled like ordinary citizens, as they’re already involved in the incident and may be targeted again.

In such cases, erasing memories would put them in more danger.

Half an hour later, Xia Lei received a message: “A member of the ‘Unification Cult’ appeared in Yulan Apartments and was killed by a young man in a clown mask.”

Xia Lei, seeing “apartments,” was puzzled: “Yulan Apartments? Isn’t that part of Guan Shan’s investigation? Could it be him again?”

The reply came quickly: “It’s him.”

Xia Lei: “…”

——

Guan Shan reached the riverside, found a bench, and sat down, letting the early morning breeze cool him as he reviewed the settlement interface.
