Chapter 103: Daily Life in Beika Town |
[You are currently participating in: Multiplayer Mode (Roleplay).]
[Script Name: Daily Life in Beika Town]
[Current Script Danger Rating: F-Grade.]
[Playing Script introduction now.]
The clatter of a train rattling along the tracks filled his ears as a cutscene unfolded before Bai Mu.
[You are a recently graduated postgraduate Forensic Doctor. Due to an emergency draft, a new batch of Forensic Doctors is urgently needed to relieve the pressure on the Beika Town police force. However, your classmates have all shunned this place. In the end, only you and one other classmate are willing to take up the post at the Beika Town Police Department.]
[Hearing the news of your arrival, the police department sent a warm welcome via email and specially mailed you the train tickets. As promised, you boarded the train.]
[You took a short nap. When you open your eyes, you find your destination right outside the window. As the announcement echoes over the PA system, you know you will soon arrive at your final stop...]
[This is a roleplay Script. Your attribute values will be reset to their initial levels, and certain items and skills are disabled.]
Sitting to his right was Misty Rain. He noticed their seats were exceptionally spacious and comfortable. They could even recline fully flat, turning into something as large as a bed where they could completely stretch their legs.
"Are these business class seats? The police department actually reimbursed business class tickets for rookies who haven't even officially joined yet. Isn't that a bit too generous?"
Bai Mu glanced around. Aside from him and Misty Rain, who looked relatively young, everyone else in the carriage fit the business profile. They were almost all middle-aged men—some reading newspapers, others handling matters on their laptops. Uniformly, they wore polished leather shoes and formal suits.
The carriage was unusually quiet. No one was speaking, and even the conductor kept her voice to a whisper. This prompted Bai Mu and Misty Rain to consciously maintain their silence as well. They exchanged a look, wordlessly agreeing to observe their surroundings independently.
Bai Mu noted the text on the newspapers was in Japanese. Beika Town certainly sounded like a Japanese location. He found he could completely understand the Japanese text on the pages, which featured a news report about a murder case. The location was none other than Beika Town.
'So this is a Japanese police procedural setup?' Bai Mu gathered the information.
This Script seemed quite peaceful. With an F-grade rating, there were likely no supernatural elements involved. The danger level was probably on par with Deserted Island Survival.
However, a low danger rating did not mean it would be easy to clear.
Take Deserted Island Survival, for example. A high-level Player who was a master of combat with a powerful physique could naturally spend thirty days on the Deserted Island in total comfort. Yet, they might not possess the electronic repair skills needed to fix the walkie-talkie, contact the outside world, and escape the island.
Of course, they could try to build a boat, but the resources on that island were pitifully scarce. It wasn't like they were a monkey born from a stone who could use a simple skiff, have their monkey subordinates pack some fruit on a raft, and sail across the vast ocean to seek the immortal path—and actually succeed in crossing it.
For a normal person attempting to build a boat to leave, the outcome would basically be getting capsized by the waves and left bobbing in the sea.
Unless their physique was so formidable that they could literally swim across the ocean, that high-level Player would probably only receive an A-grade or B-grade evaluation at the end, falling short of a perfect S-grade clear.
Since he had spent two hundred and forty hours of Community Time, Bai Mu naturally wanted to exchange it for something valuable in return.
Although dying just meant returning to the Community, and he could theoretically ignore everything to just enjoy the city for ten days—or even boldly go full Homelander, indulging in debauchery and committing every evil deed imaginable—failing to properly roleplay his identity meant he wouldn't get a single reward.
It would be thrilling, sure, but after the thrill faded, nothing would remain except endless emptiness and post-clarity depression.
He still wanted to complete the Script's Main Quest as best he could, but the quest notification hadn't rung yet. The only sound was the PA system announcing, "Next stop, Beika Town. Next stop, Beika Town. Passengers alighting here, please make your way to the doors and prepare to disembark."
Hearing the broadcast, many passengers set aside what they were doing and cast their gazes outside.
Yet, no one stood up. Bai Mu saw a kind of awe in their eyes. How to describe it? It was the same look people gave when viewing statues of Bodhisattvas or Buddhas, as if they were all silently chanting 'no offense intended' in their hearts.
'What strange behavior,' Bai Mu thought. 'Could this Beika Town be related to some exceptionally famous ancient temple or shrine?'
'Forget it, no point guessing. I'll find out once I get there anyway.'
Bai Mu ignored the other passengers for the time being and began sorting out his belongings.
Just like in the last roleplay Script, his attire had automatically changed. He was wearing a plain white button-up shirt and gray trousers. Resting in his lap was a white messenger bag printed with "Kyoto University". It seemed his persona this time was a top student once again.
He didn't rush to check the bag's contents. Instead, he first checked his inventory and status screens.
The Dance of Elvis and his combat boots had both been stowed away in his inventory, displaying a disabled status.
Additionally, "Charge's Dash", "Plant Care", and the "Hand of Walrider" had also been locked.
His common-grade Baseball Bat and kitchen knife could still be drawn, and items like his pistol and Hand Grenades were also usable. However, the Cherry Bomb and plant cards were disabled. It seemed that anything conflicting with this Script's worldview would be restricted.
Although firearms were rare-grade items, their existence in this modern cityscape didn't violate the worldview, so he could still equip his gun.
To his surprise, he could actually still use "Best Friend's Help", though the skill was currently on cooldown for 23 hours and 48 minutes.
The last time he had used this skill was to summon the Witch in the Training Room. He remembered turning on the skill refresh option, but he just hadn't actively canceled the skill at the time, leaving the Witch downstairs to bask in the sun by herself.
Looking at it now, the Training Room's skill refresh feature had not worked on "Best Friend's Help".
'Is it because I don't inherently own this skill, but rather it's an ability granted to me by a special item?'
In his inventory, "Best Friend's Doodle" showed up as disabled, yet "Best Friend's Help" remained active. From the looks of it, the doodle's priority level was incredibly high. Even though it was restricted and Bai Mu couldn't physically take it out, as long as the item existed in his inventory, he would retain access to "Best Friend's Help".
Two other items, the "Piglet Plushie" and the "Large Travel Bag", were also in effect. However, neither of them was disabled, so it was perfectly normal for them to work.
Having finished sorting out his things, Bai Mu unzipped his messenger bag. Just as he expected, inside was his Forensic Doctor ID, bearing the name "Ishikawa Shiro". There was also an onboarding letter from the police department and a hundred thousand yen in cash, which he figured was his starting capital.
Misty Rain also opened her bag. She showed her ID to Bai Mu; her name was "Hasegawa Ame". Both of their ID photos featured them in white lab coats, looking exactly as they did in reality.
The train slowly ground to a halt, and the quest notification finally chimed in his ear.
[Main Quest Triggered: Report to the police department before nightfall.]
"Let's get off," Bai Mu said softly.
Misty Rain nodded, and the two stood up from their seats. At that moment, the people around them all cast astonished glances their way.
As they walked through the carriage, every single person tracked their footsteps.
When they reached the doors, the conductor warned, "You two, this is Beika Town Station."
She deliberately emphasized the words "Beika Town Station", as if terrified they were getting off at the wrong stop.
"Beika Town is exactly where we're going."
With that, Bai Mu and Misty Rain confidently stepped off the train.
The previously quiet carriage instantly erupted into hushed murmurs.
"No way, this is Beika Town!"
"Do they have a death wish?"
"Why would any normal person go to a place like that?"
But the figures of the two simply walked away without looking back. They swiped their tickets to exit the station and disappeared at the end of the platform.
Bai Mu found it a bit strange. Across the entire platform, it seemed they were the only two passengers who had disembarked. There were staff members present, but the station was otherwise eerily deserted.
However, the moment they stepped out of the station, they were greeted by bright sunshine. The streets were bustling with traffic and pedestrians, looking for all the world like just an ordinary, peaceful city.
