Chapter 455: signing ceremony

As Nolan’s portal opened, Myrcella returned to Nolan once again.

What made Myrcella feel a little ashamed was that she did not return to Nolan this time for some ‘mission’, but simply because she had seen the news of the ‘Nolan Open Tournament’on the Spellcaster Forum, this caused her to be absent-minded while practicing her sword every day.

Only at this time did Myrcella realize the malice of that ‘Chaos Demon’.

After she returned to the holy city, she had repeatedly exhorted herself to forget her experience in Nolan and stop thinking about those hearthstones and unpacking.

However… the more myrcella forced herself to forget, the clearer her memory became.

Especially after Hearthstone legend released two brand-new card packs and held a Nolan Open tournament for all players.

The string that had been tensing the female Knight’s heart for a long time was completely broken.

Seeing the knot in Myrcella’s heart, she generously gave Myrcella a full fifteen-day holiday.

At first, Myrcella refused this holiday, but under the mission entrusted to her, she had no choice but to return to this great mage city.

“Is it over today?”

Myrcella stood opposite the Hearthstone Tavern and looked at the dwarves who came and went in the tavern.

Her mission was to bring back the traitors, Cheryl and Denisa.

The ‘bring back’here did not mean to capture them. Gloria was hoping that Cheryl and Denisa could join her side as friends.

Myrcella could not guess what the SAINTESS was thinking, but the mission that she had entrusted to Myrcella had to be completed.

“Captain, why don’t we forcefully bring the judge back?”

Behind Myrcella was another Holy Army. This holy army seemed to be a loyal supporter of the Holy Maiden faction and agreed to be a good man with a strong character.

But what gave Myrcella a headache was that this young holy army was here in Nolan for the first time.

Or rather… Nolan after the appearance of the chaos demon for the first time.

“Didn’t I tell you when I came out? The residents of Nolan don’t have a good impression of the Holy Army, so don’t do such reckless behavior,”Myrcella said.

“Why?”

The young sacred army did vaguely sense the malice of the residents of Nolan towards the Sacred Army during the past fifteen days in Nolan.

This was something that he absolutely could not understand.

Although the Sacred Army was part of the Army of the country of the sacred religion, they were warriors who controlled the power of the Holy Light. The Magic of the Holy Light generally had the power to heal injuries.

Therefore, the people and soldiers in various countries still had a good impression of the Holy Army, which was capable of both healing and resisting.

”…”Myrcella’s lips opened and closed, wanting to say something, but all his words turned into a sigh.

Why on Earth was this? It was clearly the Holy Army that came to Nolan first to build the church, but in the end, because of the appearance of the Chaos Demon, let alone the Holy Army, even the reputation of the entire kingdom of the holy religion in this world plummeted.

It was not just the residents of Nolan. Myrcella usually browsed information about the country of the holy religion on the magic web, especially the documentary “Internal strife of Frost”a while ago.

Even if she did not watch the content of the documentary, just by looking at the discussion on the internet, she vaguely began to wonder what had happened to the country that she was loyal to?

“That Judge will give us the final answer today. Wait patiently.”

Myrcella shook her head and drove the bad thoughts out of her mind.

She could only keep using the idea that everything was fabricated by that demon to force herself not to think about unnecessary things.

Fortunately, Myrcella’s trip to Nolan was rather pleasant. Not only did she watch the entire process of Nolan’s Open tournament on TV, but she also successfully bought a brand-new card bag, after defeating the Lich Kel ‘Thuzad in the necromancy and venom-filled naxamas, she went to Black Rock Mountain to slaughter nefarian.

“There’s no reason for that down-and-out judge to reject Lady Heloria’s invitation. Moreover, Lady Heloria has promised to pardon her for her past mistakes.”

In the past fifteen days, Myrcella and her subordinates had met Cheryl several times.

The judge had been complaining about her life in Nolan, such as ‘being so poor that she eats dirt every day’, ‘wanting to open her card bag but having no money, hoping that some kind-hearted person would take care of it’.

Logically speaking, if her life was so tight, Cheryl should have returned to her old job.

Although this was a situation that Myrcella did not wish to see, as a warrior or a sword wielder, this might be their fate.

Cheryl’s hands were stained with too much blood. The day the news of her life in Nolan was exposed, someone would definitely come looking for Cheryl to settle the sins committed by the judges.

‘I’m in the Library of the Advanced Magic Academy of Luersk. I’ll give you an answer there.’

A message from Cheryl interrupted Myrcella’s thoughts.

Library? What was he going to do there?

Myrcella didn’t hesitate too much. She immediately brought her subordinates and rushed to the Advanced Magic Academy.

She spent about half an hour to reach the Magic Academy.

The library happened to be located in the center of the Advanced Magic Academy. It was the most magnificent building in the entire Magic Academy. When Myrcella walked straight into the library, she saw the lady judge.

“What are you doing here?”

Myrcella looked at the surrounding decorations in confusion. The entrance of the library was connected by two long tables. Above the long tables, there were words written by some kind of fluorescent magic.

That was ‘the signing ceremony of Sister Skartan and sister Denisa’

Myrcella could not understand the meaning of the signing ceremony. However, she saw that Cheryl had a pile of the same books in her hands. On the cover was the title of ‘Heretic Judge’s diary, day one to six hundred and seventy-two days’.

“Selling books,”Cheryl answered.

“Selling… books? Are you selling books for the library here?”

Myrcella remembered Cheryl crying to her before. She had to find three jobs every day to be able to afford the nun at home and her card box.

Myrcella already knew about the attendant work that she did in the Hearthstone Tavern during the day. One of the other two jobs was selling books in this library?

“It’s to sell books I wrote myself.”Cheryl raised a copy of the heretic judge’s diary that was placed on the table.

“The diary you recorded on the magic web actually became a real book?”

Myrcella was slightly surprised. Most ordinary people had the same view of publishing as Cheryl.

That was, the author who could write and publish books had become an unreachable existence. Most of the books in this world were still in the form of manuscripts, and those that could be placed in the library.., the books that were specially made with ‘print’magic were all written by those wise men.

“Mm.”Cheryl was a little proud when she heard Myrcella’s surprised voice, but her complacency quickly subsided.

“But no one bought them…”

Cheryl covered her face with both hands and let out a dejected sigh.

Myrcella was about to say something to comfort Cheryl when she heard the girl behind her exclaim.

When Myrcella turned around, she saw a group of girls gathered behind her. These girls were not here to borrow books, but to see the nun sitting behind the long table.

“That… seems to be with you?”Myrcella remembered that the nun was also her mission target. Her name was Denise.

“Yes, she’s with me.”

Cheryl covered her face with her hands and slightly opened her eyes. She looked at Denisa who was surrounded by a group of female readers in the distance, feeling very complicated.

“Ah! If I knew that her book would be so popular, why did I work so hard to support her in the past!”

“Cheryl, have you considered what I’ve told you before?”Myrcella repeated the promise of Helovia. “If you return to the holy city, Lady Helovia will protect your safety and give you a corresponding status…”

“We’ll talk later!”Cheryl did not reply Myrcella immediately.

The two elderly spell casters walked into the library and looked around. For the first time, they did not run to Denisa’s side. Instead, they slowly came to Cheryl’s desk.

“May I ask if the author of ‘Heretic Judge’s Diary’is Here?”One of the old spellcasters asked.

“That’s me!”Cheryl said.

She did not know how many times she had answered the same question.

    Chapter 455: signing ceremony

As the portal opened, Messai found herself back in Norland.

A wave of shame washed over her. This time, her return wasn't for some grand ‘mission’, but rather a consequence of her own distraction. The news of the ‘Norland's hearthstone competition’ had surfaced on the mage Forum, and it had been enough to shatter her focus during sword practice each day.

It was only then that Messai truly grasped the insidious nature of that ‘Chaos Demon’.

Since her return to the holy city, she had diligently tried to erase her Norland experiences, to banish the thoughts of hearthstones and the thrill of unpacking new cards.

Yet… the more she fought to forget, the sharper the memories became.

The release of two brand-new card packs for Hearthstone, coupled with the announcement of a player-wide competition, had been the final blow.

The tightly wound string around the Knight’s heart finally snapped.

Sensing the inner turmoil that plagued Messai, her superior had generously granted her a full fifteen-day leave.

Initially, she had refused, but the unspoken mission attached to this ‘holiday’ left her with no choice but to return to the alluring city.

    “Is it over?”

Messai stood across from the familiar Hearthstone Tavern, observing the dwarves bustling in and out.

Her official mission was to retrieve the inquisitors, Cheryl and Denisa.

However, ‘retrieve’ in this context didn’t mean capture. Herolia, the Saintess, hoped that Cheryl and Denisa could be persuaded to join their ranks as allies.

Messai couldn't decipher the Saintess's true intentions, but the task entrusted to her was one she had to see through.

“Captain, why don’t we just forcefully bring the inquisitors back?”

Behind Messai stood another temple knight, a young man who clearly aligned himself with the Holy Maiden faction and possessed a zealous, albeit somewhat naive, sense of righteousness.

What troubled Messai, though, was that this was the young knight’s first exposure to Norland.

Or rather… his first experience of Norland in the aftermath of the chaos demon’s influence.

“Didn’t I make it clear during our departure? The residents of Norland harbor no fondness for the holy army, so avoid any reckless actions,” Messai reminded him.

    “Why?”

Over the past fifteen days, the young temple knight had vaguely picked up on the animosity of the Norland residents towards them.

This was a concept he struggled to comprehend.

Despite being part of Aetherion's army, the temple knights were holy warriors wielding the power of the Holy Light, a magic generally known for its healing properties.

Consequently, the common folk and soldiers in various nations typically held the Holy Army in high regard, appreciating their dual capabilities in both healing and combat.

”…” Messai’s lips parted, then closed, the words she wanted to speak dissolving into a sigh.

How had things gone so wrong? The temple knights had been the first to arrive in Norland, establishing the church. Yet, the appearance of the Chaos Demon had not only tarnished the Holy Army’s reputation but had also caused Aetherion's standing to plummet.

It wasn't just the people of Norland. Messai regularly perused information about Aetherion on the magic net, particularly the recent documentary “Internal Strife of Frostfell.”

Even without watching the documentary itself, the online discussions had planted a seed of doubt in her mind, causing her to question the true state of the country she served.

“That heresy inquisitor will provide us with the final answer today. Let’s wait patiently.” Messai shook her head, pushing the unsettling thoughts away.

She clung to the notion that the chaos demon had fabricated everything, a mental shield against unwelcome truths.

Fortunately, Messai’s time in Norland had been far from unpleasant. She had enjoyed watching the entirety of the hearthstone competition on television and had even managed to acquire a brand-new card pack. She recounted her virtual triumphs: defeating the Lich Kel‘Thuzad amidst the necromantic and venomous atmosphere of Naxxramas, and venturing into Black Rock Mountain to challenge the mighty Neltharion.

“There’s no reason for that disgraced judge to decline her invitation. Besides, Lady Heloria has promised to pardon her past transgressions,” the young temple knight asserted.

During the preceding fifteen days, Messai and her subordinate had encountered Cheryl on several occasions.

Cheryl had lamented her current circumstances in Norland, complaining about ‘being so impoverished she ate dirt daily’ and ‘yearning to open her card packs but lacking the funds, hoping for a charitable soul to assist her’.

Logically, if her situation was truly so dire, Cheryl should have sought a return to her former profession.

Although Messai personally found this prospect undesirable, she recognized that such a path might be the inevitable fate for a warrior or swordswoman like Cheryl.

Cheryl’s hands were stained with too much blood. The moment news of her Norland life became public, individuals seeking retribution for the heresy inquisitors' past actions would undoubtedly come looking for her.

‘I’m in the Library of the Advanced Magic Academy of Lursk. I’ll give you an answer there.’

A message from Cheryl flashed across Messai’s mental interface, interrupting her train of thought.

'Library? What could she possibly be doing there?'

Messai didn’t dwell on the question for long. She immediately gathered her subordinate, and they hurried towards the Advanced Magic Academy.

The journey took approximately half an hour.

The library stood proudly in the heart of the Advanced Magic Academy, its magnificent architecture making it the most impressive building on the entire campus. As Messai stepped inside, her gaze immediately fell upon the inquisitor.

    “What are you doing here?”

Messai’s eyes scanned the surrounding decorations in bewilderment. Two long tables formed the entrance to the main reading area. Above them, words shimmered in fluorescent magic.

The inscription read: ‘the signing ceremony of Sister Skartan and sister Denisa’.

Messai couldn't quite grasp the meaning of this ‘signing ceremony’. However, she noticed a substantial stack of identical books in front of Cheryl. The cover bore the title: ‘heresy inquisitor’s diary, day one to six hundred and seventy-two days’.

    “Selling books,” Cheryl replied.

“Selling… books? Are you selling books on behalf of the library?”

Messai recalled Cheryl’s previous tearful complaints about needing three jobs just to support the nun and her own card habit.

She already knew about Cheryl's daytime work at the Hearthstone Tavern. Was selling books in this library one of the other two jobs?

“It’s to sell books I wrote myself.” Cheryl proudly held up a copy of the heresy inquisitor’s diary from the table.

“The diary you recorded on the magic net actually became a physical book?”

Messai was genuinely surprised. Like Cheryl, most ordinary people considered publishing an almost mythical achievement.

To become an author whose work was printed and placed in a library was an aspiration that seemed unattainable. The majority of books in this world still circulated as manuscripts, and those few privileged enough to be produced with ‘print’ magic were typically the works of renowned scholars and wise individuals.

“Mm.” Cheryl’s initial pride at Messai’s surprise flickered, quickly giving way to disappointment.

    “But no one bought them…”

Cheryl covered her face with her hands, a dejected sigh escaping her lips.

Messai was about to offer a word of comfort when a surprised exclamation came from the young temple knight behind her.

Turning, Messai saw a small group of girls gathered nearby. They weren’t Browse the shelves for books; instead, their attention was fixed on the nun seated behind the other long table.

“She… seems to be with you?” Messai recalled that the nun was also one of her mission targets. Her name was Denisa.

    “Yes, she’s with me.”

Cheryl peeked through her fingers, her gaze drifting towards Denisa, who was surrounded by a cluster of female readers in the distance. A complex mix of emotions flickered across Cheryl’s face.

“Ah! If only I knew her book would be this popular, why did I work so hard to support her all this time!”

“Cheryl, have you considered what I’ve told you before?” Messai reiterated Herolia's promise. “If you return to the holy city, Lady Herolia will ensure your safety and grant you a suitable position…”

“We’ll talk later!” Cheryl said, her attention momentarily diverted.

Just then, two elderly spellcasters entered the library and looked around. For the first time since they had arrived, they didn't immediately gravitate towards Denisa. Instead, they slowly approached Cheryl’s desk.

“May I ask if the author of ‘Heresy Inquisitor’s Diary’ is present?” one of the old mages inquired.

    “That’s me!” Cheryl replied.

She had lost count of how many times she had answered that same question.
