Chapter 953: Art Studio

953 Art Studio

Sifang Street was located near a famous scenic spot in Yangdu, part of the old town area. The Jinxiu Dongfang Community was also quite old, with no building exceeding six floors or having elevators installed.

Lumian followed behind Anderson, turning towards the building closest to the community entrance.

As they climbed the stairs, he couldn't help but raise his right hand to pinch his nose.

A mixture of strong odors permeated the air.

Anderson turned sideways and laughed. "The whole building is being renovated."

He had somehow already stuffed two wads of white paper into his nostrils.

"Why is everything being renovated?" Lumian didn't hide his confusion.

Anderson glanced at him and said with a smile, "This gated community is too old. Most owners have moved away and chosen to rent out their vacant apartments. Someone has rented all the rooms in this building, planning to…"

At this point, Anderson paused, his smile becoming more pronounced in the dim stairwell as his voice deepened. "Planning to open a boutique hostel."

Colorful, right? And that person is you, right? Lumian was somewhat mentally prepared for this and frowned slightly as he said, "Isn't there still an art studio in this building? How can you say all the rooms have been rented?"

Anderson tightened the white paper wads in his nostrils. "Is it possible that the person who opened the art studio is the same one who rented the other rooms?

"The boutique hostel he wants to open is adjacent to scenic spots, hidden in a gated community, with painting as its theme."

Lumian, still pinching his nose, feigned sudden realization and said, "I see."

Due to the strong renovation smells permeating the stairwell, the two didn't slow their pace as they conversed, quickly reaching the top floor, which was the sixth floor.

The doors of both units here were open, and on the wall facing the stairwell was a brightly colored mural. At its center were four characters:

"Mute Art Studio"

"That name is quite… special," Lumian commented sincerely.

By this point, the renovation smells had faded.

Anderson removed the white paper wads from his nostrils and explained earnestly,

"Painting is done with hands, not mouths. 'Mute' represents the studio's expectations for its students: focus, quietness, and dedication."

"That's a great explanation," Lumian applauded.

Anderson wasn't offended and said with a smile, "This isn't my forced interpretation, it's what the studio owner said."

"My sister once taught me dialectics, believing that even the worst words can have a positive side. Do you think that's right?" Lumian asked with a smile.

Anderson nodded. "If you think it's right, then it's right."

He led Lumian towards the door on the left.

Lumian didn't rush in, standing at the doorway to survey the fairly spacious living room.

There was a piece of darkness with only a hint of golden-red "Dawn" in the distance, a "Storm" with deep blue waves surging, "Pilgrims" with numerous blurred figures walking across a wasteland, and a grotesque "Monster" emerging from the seabed alongside "Pirates" trying to save their ship.

The "Pirates" painting suddenly reminded Lumian of the latest volume of "The Great Adventurer". He saw vines growing from the figures' heads, bearing watermelons, while milky white liquid sprayed everywhere on the deck.

Is this recreating Gehrman Sparrow's experience? As Lumian pondered this, he stared for two seconds at the sea monster that resembled a giant leech with its maw full of sharp teeth.

Anderson walked to the easel in the middle of the living room and turned around.

Lumian looked around once more before slowly following him in, "curiously" asking, "Where's the studio owner?"

Anderson raised his right hand and pointed at himself.

"You're the studio owner?" Lumian "surprisingly" confirmed.

Anderson nodded.

Lumian suddenly smiled. "Why aren't you speaking? Has your throat suddenly gone hoarse? Have you become mute?"

Anderson, wearing the black T-shirt, began using sign language.

Lumian couldn't understand what he was expressing even after watching for a while, and thoughtfully said, "I wonder if there's an app for translating sign language…"

Anderson picked up a paintbrush, took a piece of white paper from nearby, and wrote something in dark red.

Unlike Lumian and the others, he could write in the common script of the dream city.

Lumian focused his gaze and saw a sentence written on the white paper: "It's best not to speak in the studio, treat yourself as if you're mute."

Lumian raised an eyebrow, but before he could speak, he saw Anderson grimly add another line in dark red paint: "You just spoke."

Lumian suddenly felt a chill on the back of his neck, as if a cool breeze had blown past.

He didn't turn around, seemingly feeling nothing.

Anderson wrote another passage, the dark red paint appearing to become much brighter: "Do you know this person?"

After writing, he turned the easel around to show the painting on it to Lumian.

It depicted a woman, tall with a slender face, light blue and clear eyes, strikingly beautiful with a peculiar sharpness.

This was Lumian himself.

It was his female form!

Lumian's face broke into a smile as he answered Anderson's question, "I don't know her."

As his voice echoed, something cold and wet suddenly pressed against him from behind.

Lumian quickly reached back to grab it, his palm suddenly erupting with crimson flames.

As the flames compressed layer by layer, he saw what had attacked him.

It was the giant "leech" from the "Monster" oil painting. Its pinkish, nearly transparent body had extended from the painting, its maw opened to its fullest extent, large enough to bite off an adult's head.

13:25

Looking at the densely packed, ghastly white teeth with blood-colored roots, Lumian directly slapped the fireball in his hand, which had turned from crimson to nearly white, onto it.

Boom!

The fireball exploded instantly, enveloping the sea monster that had emerged from the painting.

The shockwave carrying flames quickly swept outwards, threatening to ignite every painting, every easel, and every person here!

At that moment, from the "Storm" oil painting, the azure seawater surged out, pouring into the room with a splash, extinguishing all the flames.

Lumian's figure disappeared from where he stood, reappearing behind the mute Anderson.

His eyes had turned completely iron-black, reflecting a ghastly white.

Lumian clenched his right fist and thrust it out with a smacking sound, striking Anderson's back.

This punch, accompanied by a thunderous explosion, tore through Anderson's flesh, penetrated his body, and hit the oil painting of Lumian's female form and its easel.

The mute Anderson's body suddenly ruptured, quickly thinning and transforming into a portrait painting with a huge hole.

This portrait, along with the oil painting of Lumian's female form, was ignited by crimson flames, turning into black, light ashes in just a few seconds.

As the mute Anderson reverted to a painting, both the azure seawater that had poured into the room and the sea monsters eagerly trying to emerge suddenly vanished, leaving only the motionless oil paintings.

Lumian scanned the room and found that a giant "leech" was indeed missing from the "Monster" painting. The studio floor was covered with water stains and incompletely burned paper scraps.

The place became eerily quiet, with no living beings present except for Lumian himself.

Lumian then went through both rooms that made up the studio, finding no other abnormalities.

Those paintings were no longer eerie or mysterious.

He left the place, going down the stairs to see tenants of the community gathering in small groups, looking around.

They had heard the sound of an explosion earlier but couldn't find its source or any damage to the buildings in the community. They could only attribute it to a high-speed fighter jet passing overhead.

Lumian passed through the group and returned to the community entrance.

Suddenly, a figure was reflected in his eyes.

The figure had blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing a white shirt and black trousers, with hands in pockets, looking like someone watching the commotion.

Anderson!

Anderson Hood!

Upon seeing Lumian, Anderson asked with a surprised expression, "You're already here? Have you already entered?"

Lumian smiled. "I'm in the habit of arriving early."

Anderson smiled as well. "Me too."

As Lumian walked up to him, he asked with a smile, "Did you enjoy yourself earlier?"

"Very much," Lumian maintained his smile, saying meaningfully, "I'd like to do it again."

Anderson Hood nodded slightly.

He was about to speak when he suddenly looked around.

"Maybe next time," Anderson said with a smile, shifting his gaze back. "Let's keep in touch via WeChat."

He raised his right palm, holding his phone.

He didn't mention visiting the art studio or ask if Lumian's friend was interested in taking classes. Lumian didn't bring up these topics either, waving his hand and saying, "I'll be going then."

"See you." Anderson waved back.

Lumian walked past the tutor towards the roadside.

A gray sedan pulled up and stopped in front of him.

Lumian opened the door, got in, and said to Anthony in the driver's seat, "Let's go to Worker's Road."

Anthony nodded and merged into traffic.

Franca, Luo Shan, and Zhou Mingrui had arranged to have dinner on Worker's Road tonight at a taro chicken hotpot restaurant.

As the car drove, chomping sounds continuously came from the back seat.

On Worker's Road, inside the "Yizhou Roast Chicken" taro chicken hotpot restaurant.

Franca and Luo Shan had arrived earlier, choosing a window-side table. They had ordered chicken and taro but hadn't selected any other dishes yet.

Each of them had ordered a bottle of iced soy milk, not finding any issue with Zhou Mingrui choosing such a noisy, lively place that wasn't quite bourgeois enough for a meal.

What mattered was whether the food tasted good!

At nearly 6:50 p.m., Zhou Mingrui, wearing a black shirt, walked in.

"Over here, over here!" Luo Shan waved cheerfully.

Zhou Mingrui weaved through the other tables, came over, and said as he sat down, "Some extra work came up just before clocking out."

"We agreed on 7 p.m.," Luo Shan said, not minding at all. She pointed at Franca and said, "This is my neighbor and colleague, Luo Fu."

Zhou Mingrui glanced at Franca and said with a smile, "We've met before. Let's order first."

Franca looked outside at the darkening sky, feeling a bit uneasy.

    (84) Chapter 968: The Actor

    (84) Chapter 968: The Actor
Jenna hadn't put much effort into her appearance today, neither overdoing her makeup nor deliberately dressing down. She simply maintained her natural black hair and brown eyes, choosing a soft, local "palette" of gentle curves. The simplicity and natural charm highlighted her beauty and femininity, stunning not only the employees passing by but also her competitors for the audition.

"Next, Jenna." A staff member called her name from the conference room.

Jenna stood up, recalling her training at the “Théâtre de l'Ancienne Cage à Pigeons”, and walked gracefully into the room.

The four interviewers—two men and two women—looked up from their note-taking when they heard her greeting. Their eyes brightened, though their emotions were mixed.

"Jenna, you graduated from the National Film Academy with a degree in acting?" one of the female interviewers read aloud from Jenna's resume.

Miss Justice, as Jenna knew, corresponded to the persona of Hall Film Company's, Hockley, the producer of "The Pirate 3: Crazy Adventurer".

In other words, she was the boss of all the interviewers present.

Hall Film Company was just one non-core business under the Hall Group, which primarily operated in the banking sector. In the Dream City, the group's financial power rivaled that of the Intis Corporation.

"Yes," Jenna responded with her well-trained, clear voice.

The interviewers proceeded to ask a few more questions before one of them handed Jenna a card.

"Please perform the scenario described on this card," the interviewer said.

Seeing Jenna's clean and elegant appearance, the interviewer had deliberately chosen a scene centered around seduction to test her acting skills.

Jenna accepted the card but had barely glanced at it when the interviewer added:

"You may not use makeup or change clothes during the performance. You must rely solely on your acting to convey the content of the scene."

Far from feeling nervous, Jenna was actually a little excited.

While at the “Théâtre de l'Ancienne Cage à Pigeons”, she had often fantasized about having such a performance opportunity.

She looked down at the card and couldn’t help but chuckle.

"Seduction?" Jenna thought to herself, amused. "I have real-life experience with that."

When she raised her head again, her eyes were already brimming with bold passion, as if they held countless unspoken words.

The "Showy Diva" was back on stage!

As her gaze swept over the male and female judges, they all felt a sudden shiver in their hearts.

By mid-performance, one of the judges had already taken a sip of water.

"I haven’t even fully unleashed my charm yet," Jenna thought proudly.

She hadn’t even resorted to any overly suggestive movements.

"Ah..."—the interviewer exhaled as Jenna finished her performance, unable to help themselves.

    Then they asked:

    "Do you have a boyfriend?"

"Yes," Jenna answered promptly, though she didn’t mention having a child.

She hadn’t included that on her resume either. After all, Ludwig’s registration was linked to Lumian, and since Jenna and Lumian weren’t married, Hall Film Company certainly wouldn’t have hired a private detective to dig into her personal life.

    The interviewers exchanged glances.

What a perfect candidate—a future star with the potential to outshine many. How could she already have a boyfriend?

"Girl, wake up! You're still young. What’s the point of getting into a relationship so early?"

"Alright, alright," the female interviewer refocused and said to Jenna, "You can go home and wait for our response. We’ll let you know within three days. In the meantime, try not to leave the city."

"Okay." Jenna curtsied and exited the room.

Since this was the Artist Department, where celebrities could show up at any moment, the company assigned a staff member to escort her out, ensuring that she wouldn’t wander around and get photographed.

The young woman leading Jenna out noticed how beautiful she was—not the kind of beauty that was overwhelming, but one with great potential for stardom. Wanting to build rapport, she started giving Jenna a rundown of the different offices and areas they passed, explaining who worked where.

Jenna found it all quite interesting, particularly because Lumian had asked her to "pay attention to the actor playing Gehrman Sparrow and see if there’s anything special about him."

As they chatted, they slowly approached the exit of the Artist Department.

Just then, a group of people walked in. The man leading them was wearing sunglasses and stood about 1.8 meters tall.

Since they had entered the Artist Department, he took off his sunglasses, revealing a face that Jenna found somewhat familiar.

He bore a slight resemblance to Zhou Mingrui, but with a smaller head, more refined features, and sharper contours. If Jenna hadn’t been looking specifically for Zhou Mingrui’s traces on his face, she might not have noticed the resemblance at all.

This was the actor playing Gehrman Sparrow, a mixed-race man named Jia Yu.

Jenna withdrew her gaze, slightly disappointed.

If Jia Yu had closely resembled his character Gehrman Sparrow or had been similar enough to Zhou Mingrui to transform into Gehrman Sparrow with makeup, Jenna might have considered him significant. However, based on what she saw, it seemed unlikely.

"No wonder Franca said there was no need to observe or interact with the actor playing Gehrman Sparrow. Even Miss Justice didn’t mention Jia Yu in the information... Franca’s reasoning was odd, though, saying that Jia Yu was just a 'fake jade,' representing a falsehood and therefore not worth pursuing. But 'fake' and 'false' don’t mean the same thing at all. It seems like having someone like Franca as a guide helps see things more clearly and interpret symbols more easily..." Jenna reflected as she brushed past Jia Yu and his group.

They all instinctively turned to glance at Jenna’s retreating figure, as if dazzled by her appearance.

Once they exited the Artist Department, Jenna curiously asked, "Was that Jia Yu just now?"

The staff member escorting her nodded slightly.

"Yes, Pirates 3 gave him a bit of a boost."

"Does he have an English name? He looks very foreign," Jenna asked, feigning nonchalance.

If Jia Yu’s English name was Klein Moretti, then he’d still be worth observing and getting closer to.

The staff member thought for a moment before replying, "No, he just has foreign ancestry."

Disappointed, Jenna was about to let the subject drop when the staff member lowered her voice and said:

"Actually, he wasn’t the original choice to play Gehrman Sparrow. We initially had a more well-known actor in mind, a genuine international star."

"They couldn’t agree on the fee?" Jenna asked.

The staff member shook her head.

"No, he had a car accident and ended up in a coma."

"What?" Jenna was startled, and a few phrases she’d recently seen in a video flashed through her mind: Blades clashing, bloodshed, intense conflict.

"That’s really unfortunate," the staff member sighed.

Jenna’s eyes shifted as she asked, "What was the name of that star? I haven’t heard about a car accident replacing the actor..."

The female employee showed a reminiscent expression:

"I can't remember his name clearly, but that incident left a deep impression on me... but his name just won't come to mind... A brief pause…"

"Then I'll look it up myself." Jenna felt that there was something unusual about this.

She smiled, waved her hand, and left Hall Film Company.

    ***

Tin Hong Residence, in the rented room.

Lumian received a message from Jenna about the actor playing Gehrman Sparrow.

He informed Anthony, and the two searched different platforms for relevant information.

The car accident that led to a certain star becoming comatose did indeed happen, but neither the news articles nor the comments below mentioned the actor’s name or specific details, as if something was being avoided.

"The omniscient internet can't even provide a name..." Lumian stood up and paced in the living room/dining room.

Suddenly, he thought of someone, picked up his phone, and searched for "A name that will leave a deep impression on you."

"Have you heard about this news, and do you know who it is?"

A voice-to-text conversion beneath the message showed Lumian had pasted the information he copied.

After a while, Anderson Hood replied:

"Look, if I were to confess, who would provide you with intel?"

Still holding a grudge about last time? Is he a bit too petty? Lumian thought to himself, smirking, and replied into the phone:

"Then I'll help you break out of prison."

    Thirty seconds later, Anderson replied:

"Maybe I don't want to escape, and you shouldn’t make enemies with this city.

"That actor who had the car accident is called An Xiaotian and is currently in a special ward at Red Moon Hospital."

"An Xiaotian?" Lumian looked over at Anthony.

According to Franca, everyone with the surname An might have been part of the same family 500 years ago.

After a few seconds of thought, Anthony had a realization, but Lumian quickly muttered:

    "Antigonus?"

This was one of the five Grand Dukes of the Tudor Empire, the only person to have once integrated the Uniqueness of the "Fool."

Thinking about the three Grand Dukes of the Tudor Empire he had encountered in the dreamscape, as well as the lingering presence of the "Blood Emperor," Lumian felt an increasing sense of pressure.

"A Fool, casting himself as the previous Fool? That fits with the logic of the Dreamscape..." Lumian nodded slowly.

"But the car accident makes things unusual. What could it symbolize?" Anthony pondered.

"Maybe it symbolizes that the spiritual mark left by Antigonus in the Fool's Uniqueness is now in a vegetative state?" Lumian attempted an interpretation.

    He quickly added:

"What's even more suspicious is that the Miss Justice didn’t mention this in her files.

"Whether An Xiaotian corresponds to Antigonus in the Dreamscape or not, the fact that he was originally cast as Gehrman Sparrow, had a car accident, and became comatose— Miss Justice should have at least mentioned it in her report.

"If he is Antigonus, we’re supposed to investigate the issue further. If not, why not just explain it plainly to prevent us from wasting time on it?"

Anthony thought for a moment and said:

    "Maybe she forgot."

But to those who deal with the Major Arcana, "forgetting" itself might indicate there's something wrong with An Xiaotian’s existence.

Lumian looked at Anthony thoughtfully and said:

"Soon, you should go to the Star Dream Provisions Store to pick up the news and send out a message about An Xiaotian.

"Then, I’ll find some time to visit Red Moon Hospital and 'meet' An Xiaotian."

    (83) Chapter 967: A New Problem

Anthony did not pull up the curtains in his room because he still wanted to observe the situation outside.

This was to compare it with his own condition.

After sitting for a while, he stood up, walked to the window, and admired the shimmering cityscape that still glowed brightly even late at night.

At that moment, he suddenly felt a strong dizziness.

He quickly realized that the air around him had become somewhat dry—no, to be more precise, it was as if he had been "thrown out" of the world, isolated from the air.

Simultaneously, his thoughts began to blur, becoming stuck and chaotic. His hands, seemingly of their own will, reached for his throat, as if trying to pull out his trachea and return it to the original world.

"This is very similar to how Franca described it..."

"Contact with the entity Peng Deng can also lead to self-being thrown out of the Dreamscape..."

"More importantly, I came into contact with the target during the day, without any indication of supernatural forces or hidden strange events..."

"Could Peng Deng be more special than Zhou Mingrui?"

Anthony calmly analyzed his state, reflecting on the current experiment.

Feeling himself nearing the tipping point of losing control and becoming a marionette, he leveraged the force that was trying to push him away and voluntarily withdrew from the Dreamscape.

He opened his eyes and saw the dark ceiling and the faint red moonlight filtering through the thick curtains.

This scene was not part of the Dreamscape.

Recalling what Franca had told him about the real world, Anthony quickly checked his belongings and physical condition, then turned around and headed toward the bathroom.

He had initially planned to go to the bathroom in the Dreamscape city as well.

After some time, Anthony heard a knocking sound at his door.

Without needing to ask, he instinctively knew that it was the Miss Justice and Miss Susie outside.

Anthony opened the door and, unsurprisingly, saw the holder of the Major Arcana card along with the gentle, intelligent, golden-haired dog.

Before he could greet them, the soft voice of the Miss Justice asked:

"Why did you suddenly leave the Dreamscape?"

"I was thrown out," Anthony replied with some confusion.

    Miss Justice shook her head.

"Even though I can no longer influence Mr. Fool's Dreamscape, I have been monitoring its changes closely."

"I didn't notice any signs of you being expelled from the Dreamscape."

"But..." Anthony didn't question her explanation, instead recounting in detail how he had come into contact with Peng Deng, how he had been isolated, and what he had just experienced.

Miss Justice patiently listened without interrupting, then gently nodded and said:

"I think what you felt was your inner fear. Your fear manifested into reality, making you mistakenly believe that you were being thrown out of the Dreamscape, so you chose to leave voluntarily."

"As a psychologist, both you and I are well aware that such intense fear, without any apparent cause, is abnormal. This is the unusual effect of your brief contact with Peng Deng earlier today."

"Fear... The contact with Peng Deng triggered my fear of being expelled from the Dreamscape, which culminated in the early morning, developing into an almost real illusion?" Anthony recalled what had happened and agreed with the Miss Justice's hypothesis. He muttered to himself, "Is this also a sign of being watched by that Celestial Worthy, a manifestation of some power? Or, is Peng Deng's peculiarity unrelated to that Celestial Worthy and stems from a different source?"

"We aren't sure yet," she replied thoughtfully, "because Peng Deng's character and position in the Dreamscape city are too unique. We placed him in the final stages of our investigation process. Unfortunately, we hadn't reached that point before losing our ability to affect the Dreamscape. This was our Tarot Club's first true contact with Peng Deng..."

As she spoke, the Miss Justice's emerald eyes flickered slightly, and she paused for a moment before continuing.

"Perhaps the issue lies in our decision to investigate Peng Deng only at the final stage, but there are too many possible reasons. The Fool could easily obscure things..."

"Could the Celestial Worthy unconsciously trigger your deepest fears, causing them to erupt at critical moments? We still don't know. We have very little understanding of the Zero Authority on the Seer Path and its corresponding symbols, especially the latter."

Although the Miss Justice didn't finish her hypothesis, Anthony could already follow her line of thought. He cautiously proposed:

"In the next step, we should design a more refined experiment targeting Peng Deng to pinpoint the problem."

"What we can confirm for now is that there is a distinct difference between him and Zhou Mingrui. Under the same conditions, the anomalies arising from contact with them are different."

The Miss Justice smiled and said:

"Your contact with Peng Deng has been extremely enlightening for me."

"Hmm... Don't rush back to the Dreamscape just yet. Stay out for three hours, walk around the mansion, and eat something."

"It's not that going back now would cause any problems—you're not being expelled, so there's no need to worry about that. This is just a simple mental adjustment for you: staying in the Dreamscape city for too long can make it hard to distinguish between reality and the Dreamscape. Only by experiencing the solid reality after leaving can you deepen your psychological understanding."

"Yes, Miss Justice," Anthony responded. As a psychologist, he naturally understood the importance of what she was saying.

In the Dreamscape city, there's a term he recently learned that seems appropriate:

    "Stay cautious."

After returning to the high-tech building, Lumian resumed his patrol duties with Old Ha until his shift ended at 12:30 a.m.

He then "teleported" to the vicinity of Red Moon Hospital and used the world inside the mirror to position himself outside Li Ke Ji's hospital room, awaiting a possible attack.

Of course, he didn't stay in one place or remain at Red Moon Hospital the entire time.

He selected three time windows he considered optimal for assassination, setting ambushes during those periods, while spending the rest of the time either sleeping at home or playing on his phone.

During those three time windows, he would randomly choose one of six hiding spots, never using the same one twice in a row.

This was to guard against Zaratulstra and the other followers of the Celestial Worthy, who might anticipate that someone would use Li Ke Ji as bait for an ambush, reversing the situation.

At dawn, Lumian went out to buy breakfast. Along the way, he deliberately ducked into a quiet alley to meet Jenna.

This was a carefully arranged rendezvous.

Jenna gave Ludwig over to Lumian, explaining that she had an interview at Hall Film Company today and couldn't bring the child along.

Lumian looked around and told Jenna what had happened the previous night, asking her to share it with Franca. He concluded:

"At the moment, it seems that interacting with Zhou Mingrui during the day and reminding him of the existence of supernatural powers carries certain risks, but it won't result in a precise attack. However, being remembered by Zhou Mingrui and knowing the associated danger could lead to rapid become marionette at night. This might be avoidable, but we can't confirm if it's an isolated attack yet. Tonight, I’ll observe Zaratulstra's situation further.

"Have Luo Shan approach Zhou Mingrui again and mention Zaratulstra to see if he's forgotten anything. Don't worry, after I directly mentioned Zaratulstra yesterday, Zhou Mingrui has already guessed that I'm working with Franca and Luo Shan. He doesn't yet know about your or Anthony's existence."

Jenna responded with a simple "Mm," and both of them almost simultaneously received a friend request from An Ruide. They exchanged a glance, and Lumian signaled for Jenna not to rush, as he accepted the request first.

After explaining the events of the previous night and Miss Justice's suspicions, Lumian confirmed the identity of the other party, smiled, and sent an audio message:

"I’ll explain the details back at the rented room. I've had quite the gain here as well."

"Peng Deng seems even more unique than we thought…" Lumian remarked to Jenna about Anthony's encounter.

Jenna listened intently, then said goodbye to Lumian and Ludwig, relaying the message back to Anthony.

Inside the Administrative Department of the High Tech Building.

When Franca and Luo Shan went to the restroom together, taking advantage of the moment when no one else was around, Jenna relayed the need to speak to Zhou Mingrui.

Luo Shan, feeling both anxious and excited, asked, "How should I bring it up?"

Franca, using her Instigator skills, helped her come up with a suitable excuse.

Over half an hour later, Zhou Mingrui, wearing a gray shirt, entered the administrative department once again, asking Luo Shan about the company's recent happenings and whether there was any overtime. Even if there wasn't, he wanted to stay.

Perfect question! Luo Shan silently praised Zhou Mingrui and replied with a smile:

"The group is currently in formal negotiations for a merger with a large company.

    "Boss has visited Zaratulstra twice."

When Luo Shan mentioned Zaratulstra, she watched Zhou Mingrui's reaction closely to see if there was any change in his expression.

Zhou Mingrui suddenly realized and said, "Before, Mr. Huang even had me pick him up at the airport, acting as a translator and explainer, but we couldn't meet him."

"He came to the company, but you weren't here. You were on sick leave, right? He came again yesterday and stayed on the sixteenth floor without visiting the other departments, so you haven't seen him," Luo Shan added, using the excuse Franca had come up with.

Zhou Mingrui paused for a moment, then mused, "Maybe some force is subtly preventing me from meeting him."

After chatting a bit more, Zhou Mingrui left Luo Shan’s desk and headed for the door.

As he passed by Franca’s spot, she suddenly spoke up:

    "Be careful!"

Zhou Mingrui turned sharply, looking at Franca. She pointed at a wet spot on the floor and said:

"I just spilled some water here; it's a bit slippery, so be careful."

"Ah, you gave me a scare," Zhou Mingrui replied with a smile.

He carefully stepped around the wet spot and left the administrative department, his smile gradually fading:

"Franca told me to be careful? Luo Shan just mentioned Zaratulstra...

"Are they telling me to be cautious about Zaratulstra?

"Yes, they are indeed aligned with Li Ming…"

Back in the administrative department, Luo Shan sent Franca a message:

"He seems to be on alert about the enemy you mentioned. He probably hasn't forgotten your warning."

    (82) Chapter 966: Different Treatment

As time slowly passed, Lumian noticed workers leaving the high-tech office building one by one. On the roadside, various street vendors sold stir-fried noodles, braised dishes, skewers, and grilled foods.

Cars with their headlights on continued to pass by, maintaining the busy atmosphere.

No tasks for now, huh? Lumian had long lost sight of Zhou Mingrui and didn’t sense anything unusual.

At this moment, Lao Ha approached him and said, “Let’s take another round so Captain Xu doesn’t think we’re slacking off in the office.”

    “Alright,” Lumian nodded.

He then noticed Lao Ha moving with some discomfort.

“What’s wrong with you? Did you hurt your waist?” Lumian stopped, still standing near the window.

Lao Ha turned his head slightly and, with a normal expression, replied, “No, nothing…”

As he spoke, his lips moved in a delayed manner, and his accent shifted strangely.

Before Lumian could respond, Lao Ha turned away and continued walking toward the door.

His knees, ankles, arms, and shoulders felt as if they were filled with lead, making him stiff and awkward in his movements.

Suddenly, Lumian recalled seeing a puppet show in the basement of the Alone Bar in Trier. Lao Ha’s joints now seemed tied by invisible strings, like a marionette.

“He’s more like a marionette than a human now...

    “Has he become Marionette?

“And why do I feel like my thoughts are stuck as well... Am I also being Marionette?”

Terrified, Lumian quickly lowered his head and tried to raise his right arm.

In his view, his arm moved jerkily, as if a video was playing on a slow internet connection.

Indeed... Lumian’s first reaction was that the Celestial Worthy made marionette from him. However, unlike what Franca had described—feeling like a fish out of water or a person struggling to breathe—he didn’t feel uncomfortable.

    He then considered another possibility:

Was it Zaratulstra or one of the Celestial Worthy’s subordinates, hiding in the shadows and targeting him?

Lumian moved his neck slightly, glancing out the window.

He noticed the cars on the street had all stopped for a moment, but they hadn’t abruptly braked; they simply paused before continuing forward.

After two seconds, they stopped again.

It was as if Lumian was watching a surveillance feed, frame by frame!

Not only were the cars behaving this way, but the street vendors selling noodles and their customers also seemed frozen in time.

“A dreamscape, an urban one at that... Only the Celestial Worthy or Mr. Fool can make such a large-scale marionette show…

    “Something’s wrong…”

Lumian focused his mind, preparing to actively exit the dreamscape.

Although he couldn’t understand why his situation was different from Franca’s, the changes around him indicated this wasn’t something he could escape or resist with his own abilities.

His only solution was to leave the dreamscape before he became a marionette himself.

However, Lumian didn’t immediately act on this. He had already deleted any important contacts from his phone in the Information Shredder, so he had some time to observe the changes and see if he could uncover any hidden information.

Ten seconds later, Lumian’s thoughts suddenly became clearer, and the fogginess in his mind vanished.

“Is it over? Am I not a marionette anymore?” Lumian looked outside and saw that the cars on the street were no longer stopping.

The street vendors and pedestrians had also returned to normal.

“Why are you still standing there, lost in thought?” Lao Ha turned and urged Lumian once more.

Lumian’s eyes flickered slightly as he jokingly said, “Oh, I’ve got a stomachache. I need to go to the bathroom.”

He ran, passing Lao Ha, and headed for the public restroom in the building.

Lao Ha watched his retreating figure and laughed, “Lazy people need frequent bathroom breaks!”

Lumian entered a stall, locked the door behind him, and quickly activated his Traverse the Spirit World.

He teleported to another public restroom in the same area, appearing in the middle of the air.

Seeing that the stall was empty, Lumian gently landed and locked the door again.

This was the restroom near Zaratulstra’s bar, the one Lumian had scouted before heading to wait outside the Red Moon Hospital. Although his plan to assassinate Zaratulstra had been temporarily shelved in favor of ambushing the enemy, Lumian still made preparations just in case.

Using the mirrored world, he passed through the glass window of Zaratulstra’s room.

Under the night sky, the reflection of the window became a true mirror.

Lumian didn’t press his face against the glass. He kept his distance and cautiously observed the room’s situation.

He wasn’t sure if Zaratulstra had returned to the bar or was still out socializing. He also didn’t dare use divination to find Zarathulstra’s current location, fearing it would alert the true Seer.

A moment later, he saw a figure hanging from the chandelier, dressed in formal black attire with slightly disheveled white hair, swaying gently like a hanged corpse.

    Zaratulstra!

    Lumian was stunned.

“Zaratulstra was hanged by Mr. Fool?

“Could it be that my words to Zhou Mingrui this afternoon had an effect?

“I only wanted to kick Zaratulstra out of the dreamscape, and I was prepared to pay the price of it myself...”

As Lumian pondered, he noticed twisted, writhing, transparent maggots falling from Zaratulstra’s body.

As soon as the insects hit the ground, landing on both the bed and the floor, they quickly faded and disappeared, as if they were mere illusions.

Lumian immediately saw a figure emerge from the void.

The figure was dressed in formal black attire, with stark white hair and a thick beard. His deep blue eyes were so dark they almost appeared black.

    Zaratulstra!

    Another Zaratulstra!

    A living Zaratulstra!

Zaratulstra raised his head, expressionless, and looked at his own image, hanging from the chandelier.

The figure dangling from the chandelier quickly faded, just like the worms before, until it completely disappeared.

"Was the Zaratulstra hanging from the chandelier just a historical projection?

"Did Zaratulstra sense the danger in advance and summon a historical image to replace himself? If not, at this level—Level 7—the historical image wouldn't have lasted long."

Lumian withdrew his gaze, careful not to look at Zaratulstra again to avoid being detected.

The Major Arcana cards provide detailed information about the abilities of the "Seer" pathway up to Sequence 3, the Scholar of Yore. For Sequence 2, the Miracle Invoker, they only briefly touch on how wishes and miracles work. Beyond that, the Major Arcana cards almost never mention anything further, only using terms like Deception or Mystery later to explain specific events.

Standing in the pitch-black void behind the mirror, Lumian reflected on his different experiences with Zaratulstra and came to a few conclusions about what had just happened:

"It's pretty clear that my warning to Zhou Mingrui earlier today caused this anomaly.

"On my end, the pedestrians and cars within a certain range were all affected by the puppeteering, not just me. This indicates that my warning to Zhou Mingrui indeed attracted the Celestial Worthy’s attention, but because I warned him during the day, the Celestial Worthy couldn’t precisely lock onto me and had to target a larger area instead.

"If I had used supernatural abilities to resist or struggle within the collective puppeteering, I would have been quickly locked onto by the Celestial Worthy. However, if I had chosen to leave the dreamscape to avoid danger, the Celestial Worthy would have achieved their goal by forcing me to use up one of my chances to enter and exit the dreamscape. Truly cunning.

"My warning to Zhou Mingrui was also sensed by Mr. Fool, who targeted Zaratulstra as well. As a result, Zaratulstra quickly encountered targeted puppeteering, but it was absorbed by a historical projection.

"Why is Zaratulstra so calm right now? Is this the Faceless abilities? Or is he convinced that as long as he escapes this one time, Mr. Fool’s gaze won’t fall on him again before any new changes occur?

"I'll ask Luo Shan tomorrow to check in on Zhou Mingrui, to see if he still remembers Zaratulstra’s threat. If he does, and Zaratulstra doesn’t get puppeteered again or kicked out of the Dreamscape, then it’s likely that the Celestial Worthy provided help, using a historical projection to resolve this event.

"Could we use a similar method to avoid being kicked out of the dreamscape ourselves?

"Maybe the threat others perceive and the direct stimulus are different, which explains why Franca’s experience differed from Zaratulstra’s."

With these thoughts in mind, Lumian quietly glanced out of the mirror again.

He saw Zaratulstra, unharmed, walk to the door, open it, and allow several attendants to enter. Together, they began discussing tomorrow's business negotiations. Lumian felt a pang of regret.

He had just been considering whether to take advantage of the moment when Zaratulstra’s historical image was hanged and his real body was present to launch a surprise assassination!

His curse still hadn’t been displaced by the Paper Figurine Substituion, as long as it could affect the real body.

Glancing at the attendants, assessing the likelihood of any of them being supernatural, Lumian silently left by passing through the mirror's glass and returned to the restroom he had initially entered.

Just two seconds after he left, Zaratulstra and his attendants in the room either turned halfway or tilted their heads, collectively directing their gaze toward the window at the edge of the living room, where the night cast shadows on the glass.
